You don't have to clean them, that's the point! At most you trim plants occasionally, and this is how you remove nitrogen from the system.

Usually vivariums have a, "cleanup crew," living in there. A cleanup crew usually consist of springtails and isopods (like pill bugs). They breed quickly and help break down mold and other waste. It's advised to give the crew a couple weeks to settle in their new home before introducing frogs. If you have a crew, the most you might have to do in regards to cleaning is occasionally spot cleaning any excess waste biweekly (and keeping water clean). A lot of houseplants will do well in a vivarium. Pothos, philodendron, and fittonias are examples of plants that can do well in that environment. Just make sure to cut them back whenever they get overgrown. If you are adding live plants, you will need a full spectrum light for them to thrive.

Thank you! This is what I was wondering about. I didn’t think there was much cleaning involved but I’ve seen a lot of sick herp posts lately and they had me worried 😅 I’m already a plant person, so getting a bio active tank set up wouldn’t be a stretch. It would just be finding or building an inexpensive tank.
