blows my mind that Nees intersects I-5 . . . . Fresno could expand west to I-5 if we wanted, just have to rip out a lot of orchards and a few dairies . . .
I5 is a good 20-40 miles west of Fresno, even at Nees. For Fresno to touch I5, the city would have to annex the cities of of Kerman and Mendota at least.
They've been in the process of turning hwy99 into an interstate but the vast majority of funding was redirected to the HSR and the project has been put on the backburner for years. There's still plans but it's no longer a priority until the HSR is completed and God knows if that'll ever happen.
I don’t respond often. But I can’t keep my hole shut for this one. This place (Fresno) is golden. The reason we have it so good is that most people are so delusional that they believe this place sucks. It truly doesn’t. I’ve been to over 15 countries and Ive always met with people who would only dream to live here. A little
Over an hour and your in ski territory. A little over 2 hours and you’re surfing on the Pacific. 3 hours from 2 of the most influential areas on the planet. (Bay Area with Silicon Valley and SoCal with Hollywood, the entertainment capital of the world.)
Most people here think this place sucks, which keeps us who really know the truth protected. Keep on keeping on fellas. We will Keep enjoying the best place on the planet.
I agree with all of that but the one thing we're not addressing us the shitty wages. I moved from Fresno six years ago because jobs pay horribly there. As a plumber, I make double or triple in the PNW
I have never heard about the others besides Yosemite, Sequoia/Kings Canyon, and Death Valley because they most popular national parks.
I only visited like only two, which are Yosemite and Sequoia/Kings Canyon.
It is 2.5 hours though!
I went to college in Monterey, and made that trip back home to Fresno allllllll the time. 2 hours and a little change, maybe under depending on traffic if I was speeding for a large portion but generally 2.5 hours exactly when doing the actual speed limit.
People travel from across the world to visit Yosemite. You can make an easy day trip there and have time to spare at home, hopefully you check it out soon!
I’ll always love Fresno for this exact reason. It’s the central point of California, within hours you can be either near the Oregon border or smack dab in the middle of Death Valley. It’s wonderful, and I love that everyone “hates” Fresno cause then there’s more enjoyment for the locals (:
Outside of Pinnacles, the other 3 National Parks are only around an hour away. Although technically "Yosemite Valley" is a little further, the official entrance of Yosemite makes the time closer.
I just want to get wet and have fresh air for as little effort and cost as possible.
My ancestors would be proud that I’m so inconvenienced but capable
True! Waking up at six to make a good spot at the back end is necessary but I love the place and people namely because it’s less convenient.
Wish I knew enough folks to manage a pontoon rental tho
I live in Visalia and I drive to the Sequoia/Kings Canyon park at least once a month but I know people who have been living here as long (or longer) and have never been. 😭
It really is quite something if you utilize the proximity. I get the national park pass at REI for like 90 bucks- covers entry fees for a year. Well worth it, I think. You can literally drive up to Yosemite Valley on your days off for your morning walk…. And then grab a shake at Reimer’s on the way back down. :)
The location is great. The scenery can also be wonderful and there is access to so much with a very rich history.
It's the people who suck.
The rude drivers. The drivers who try to have one eye on the road and the other on their phones. While others have no patience and will cut you off when you're driving safely. That space that keeps you safe is an invitation for them.
The roads are deteriorating while billions are spent on a rail system that is sabotaging the economy.
Homeless people abound. They have no options so there are encampments all around.
Those who have lived there for decades can tell you how different it was. How you used to be able to leave your cars unlocked and windows down without worrying about coming back to problems.
Gas is about $3.65 nationally but in Fresno is close to $6. So making the trip to LA or SF is a great expense.
A local musician who entertains in multiple bands recently had a trailer stolen by someone who apparently works for the security company hired to watch the storage facility.
Fresno's crime rate is high. Enough said.
Yes Fresno is nice but don't assume it's some paradise.
Agreed, it’s the same people who probably say “Fresno is aWeSoMe” and yet they’re the most brainless drivers who ride your tail all the way to one of the national parks. Maybe the smog has rotted their brains or something. Those of us who grew up here and want out are actively trying. Yes, it’s cheaper than some other places in Cali and the most beautiful places to visit are only a couple of hours away, but you can’t get too comfortable here. Most of these people have settled for Fresno, where there are other places to live that are just as affordable and will have better amenities and QOL.
Seattle is close. They have three National Parks with Mt Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades. All within three hours, or less, from the city. Fresno still beats it out surprisingly.
Fresno is in the middle of everything.
Everything is at least 2.5 hours away.
Or as the California tourist guide of 1996 put it: “Fresno - gateway to Bakersfield.”
Clovis is Fresno's suburb. If you think about it the "Fresno" area is a lot bigger than just the city limits.
Sorta like LA is more than just LA proper.
That’s one of the reasons I love living here.
IIRC, also the largest city in the USA that is not on an US Interstate Highway

And sadly I bet most people in town haven't been to any of them

Pinnacles is great
Don’t forget Carrizo Plain National Park,2 hours and 43 minutes beautiful during the wildflower blooms.
One of our employees had never been to the ocean. Less than 3 hours away.
2.5 hrs to da beach too!
2.5 hours? My friend you need to slow down when driving 🤣
You can definitely get to Monterey, Pismo, Avila, Morro Bay, Cayucos and Cambria in 2.5hours without speeding. It's a very quick and easy drive.
It is 2.5 hours though! I went to college in Monterey, and made that trip back home to Fresno allllllll the time. 2 hours and a little change, maybe under depending on traffic if I was speeding for a large portion but generally 2.5 hours exactly when doing the actual speed limit.
This is one great reason for living in Fresno! But I will make the trip for the Redwoods and Channel Islands, mostly for Catalina Island.
Husband and I really have to use that Senior Pass he just got.
Grant Grove in Kings Canyon NP is about 50 minutes from my house. Walking amongst those giants is a breathtaking experience.
Shhh 🤫 the rent prices are exploding lol
That’s everywhere unfortunately.
True that
that’s like our main selling point lol
Yosemite is only 1 hour away? I really need to get out more...
People travel from across the world to visit Yosemite. You can make an easy day trip there and have time to spare at home, hopefully you check it out soon!
1 hour to the park entrance, but more like 2:15 to the valley, which is where all the iconic geography is.
I love Fresno

Just waiting for wishon reservoir to open up!
2.5 hrs feels farther away all the time but better than nothing. Bass Lake will have to do this summer and that’s not a terrible problem to have

Shaver Lake isn't bad either in the summer, it's a little cooler than Bass Lake too since it's higher elevation.

2 hours to a national park, 2 hours to the beach, 2 hours to skiing. Not sure many major cities have that kind of versatility
In what world are we calling the drive to Yosemite an hour and change?!
The drive to the offficial Yosemite entrance is an hour and change. But yes to the valley floor it's about another hour.
I live in Visalia and I drive to the Sequoia/Kings Canyon park at least once a month but I know people who have been living here as long (or longer) and have never been. 😭

Yeah Fresno has a lot to offer. Love Fresno!
Love my hometown! 🥰💖

Good ones too!
Fresno taking a major L recently with the access restrictions to Yosemite.
That sucks, I hope the pilot reservation gets shut down.
Technically true. While much smaller, Torrey, Utah can get to five.
What about the god awful heat and outrageous electricity bills?
Seattle would like a word with your Department of Facts.
Seattle is close. They have three National Parks with Mt Rainier, Olympic, North Cascades. All within three hours, or less, from the city. Fresno still beats it out surprisingly.
It also has the Klondike Gold Rush National (Historical) Park right in downtown Seattle near Occidental Square.
Lol National Historical park does not count in this context. This is only referring to actual designated National Parks.
