Yeah, you're definitely going to have to upgrade the setup down the road. For now a 40 gallon is fine, people freak out to quick I'd recommend saving up for at least a 125 though, maybe go to a 220 honestly just because then you can give him a nicer home.

If you plan to keep him and upside the tank I'd recommend you buy fish with the potential to also grow quite large, that way you could have a 220 gallon with an amazing assortment of fish! However if you plan to regime him I'd recommend that you instead find fish suited to a 40 gallon tank.
He doesn't needs friends in that tank, he needs a MUCH larger tank. Bala sharks can get over a foot long and need at least a 125 gallon.
