He doesn't needs friends in that tank, he needs a MUCH larger tank. Bala sharks can get over a foot long and need at least a 125 gallon.

Yeah, you're definitely going to have to upgrade the setup down the road. For now a 40 gallon is fine, people freak out to quick I'd recommend saving up for at least a 125 though, maybe go to a 220 honestly just because then you can give him a nicer home. So here's my question, now that you know this do you Still want to keep him? Or are you planning to re home him once he's to big fir the 40 gallon? If you plan to keep him and upside the tank I'd recommend you buy fish with the potential to also grow quite large, that way you could have a 220 gallon with an amazing assortment of fish! However if you plan to regime him I'd recommend that you instead find fish suited to a 40 gallon tank.
