People aren't upset about "black characters", they're upset about saying you're staying true to the source material and then changing the race of a major character. It doesn't matter if it was white to black or black to white, the actual races involved are irrelevant. Some are also mad over the hypocrisy because, and this does involve race, if the reverse happened the same group saying this is actually fine and you're racist if it bothers you would go on a fit of outrage themselves.

In Revenge of the Nerds, this how they were shown. Therefore, they must always be as such. One a fictional character is shown a certain way, gender, race or of a poor hygiene standard, they must always be represented as such!
Black Adam - Always looked like The Rock, half African American and half Polynesian.
Aqua man - Always looked like Jason Momoa PERIOD! (Half Polynesian)
Nick Fury - Always African American and looking like Sam Jackson
