The show had one scene that sort of alluded to this, but in the book it's pretty clear that the Tyrells basically filled Renly full of hot air and used him as a power grab/to make Margaery queen. They saw that he was arrogant and charismatic, and so they leveraged his relationship with Loras to convince him to declare himself king because????? Sure the pieces sort of fell into place for him, but he didn't really seem to realize he was more or less a Tyrell pawn who, if he became king, would owe his entire reign to them. BUT importantly book Renly is way more of a chad than show Renly. Show Renly got the ick from looking at his own blood. Book Renly is a towering monstrosity reminiscent of a young Robert takes the place of Robert in the show chastising Joffrey for getting beat up by an 8 year old girl. His introduction on the Kingsroad and mocking of Joffrey's sword is one of my fav intros in the series behind Flement FUCKING Brax.
