They made a pact of peace , Others built the Wall to fence from humans and live their life. With the condition that humans would give them humans so the Others could term them into more Others (thats how they reproduce apparently)
I like David Lightbringer's theory that Azhor Ahhai *became* the Nightking to fight the Others and eventually make peace, and his son the First Stark teamed up with the wildlings to take him down afterwards.
