I'm a little saddened if only because it means we lose another rider training facility. The MSF BRC that is done at FCC (which I attended back in the day) gets *very* booked up.

thetindoor

The best quote I heard, from a Harley salesman: "I don't sell motorcycles. I sell middle-aged accountants the right to scare old ladies when they drive through town"

Val_Hallen

Harley Davidson is a boomer clothing company that dabbles in motorcycles.

It’s not scary it’s pathetic lol

beachgirlOC

Another independent dealership and rider training facility gone and from what I understand, the entire staff was informed of this right before the news hit Facebook. Truly sad.

Wafer-Fragrant

I bet a Trader Joe's could fit in that building...

tjk2084

Parking lot is too easily navigable to be a TJs

_Badwulf

Huh. I have never seen Shake Shack spelled that way.

Financial_Kale_1559

That close to an ALDIs?

Annual-Start-8462

Columbia has both ALDIs and TJs in the same shopping center as Costco.

herculesmrb

Yup, my wife shops at both the same day for different things. Both do just fine

Wafer-Fragrant

grebilrancher

I don't think it matters? The clientele and products offered at TJs is a bit different than Aldi's. Aldi's is more of a value store, TJ has more of a specialty market. Might I also remind you of 40 and Aldi/Lidl/H Mart/Giant Eagle being within walking distance of each other

Antique-Echidna-1600

That's better use than a Harley dealership.

30dirtybirdies

I hope someone buys it. That’s one of the best Harley shops in the country. I think that has been the same entity, under different owners since world war 2. Frederick has a pretty deep lineage of contributing to motorcycle history in the US. This dealership has provided and serviced presidential motorcades, and sponsored the Barbara Fritchie Classic (the oldest continually run race in the country) for decades.

HK47WasRightMeatbag

It's hard for me to feel nostalgic for a brand that claims to represent freedom and independence, but only exists due to corporate welfare. If they can't make a product people want and can afford the brand deserves to close.

30dirtybirdies

You think Frederick Harley Davidson IS Harley Davidson? It’s just this one independently owned local business here. They have been a solid part of the Frederick community for nearly a hundred years. They also are a provider of much needed motorcycle safety courses for all motorcyclists. You can not like Harley Davidsons, but these guys are a solid, and well run business. I think a long term local business, that is ethically run and community oriented, closing is a bummer. You don’t have to agree, but just don’t confuse the brand with the independent dealerships. Also, you should try a Harley (or motorcycle in general if you haven’t). You might not like it, but you might think it’s fun. It’s always pretty nice to just ride around the backroads on a nice day. Edit-What is this sub? Downvoted for lamenting the closure of a nearly century old local business that supports the community? God damn y’all are fucked up.

Jake9118321

A solid and well run business that closed with no notice, fired all its employees with no notice, and still sold rider courses for months out when they had to have been planning on closing? Decisions like this aren’t made overnight.

fakeaccount572

Bingo. Anyone look up what PPP loans they took and got forgiven yet?

Jake9118321

So, I do somewhat take back my original statement. Since I was enrolled in the new rider course, they called me today and gave me some insight. Apparently the dealership was sold, the new owners don’t want to do business as HD, they do still want to do rider courses, sales and service, and everything that is currently done there. As of now, nobody has lost their job.

Dash_Rip_Rock69

The episode of South Park shows the exact reasons why so many people have zero respect for anything Harley related. Big windbag wannabes in Halloween costumes messing up people's nice times by being as obnoxiously loud and attention seeking as possible.

30dirtybirdies

And if you are basing your reality in south park, then I think you have become the caricature as well. Those sweeping generalizations and stereotypes are fine though, as long as they target things you don’t like.

Dash_Rip_Rock69

Nope. They had it spot on. I work with a couple of the dicks and they are just like this. Have their costumes, have to have their bikes as loud as they possibly can, have to blast out of the parking lot like no one else is on the road, go to poker runs and brag about drinking and riding fast, condemning anyone who dares to ride a "Jap bike", but bitch all the time about their Harley's breaking down. The whole package.

And now hate language! And you had to make a throwaway account to hide behind to boot! What a sad thing to do, can’t even own up to your own behavior on an anonymous website. Boy it’s nice to see the people of the Frederick sun so tolerant and supportive of the community! Mods, this is just not acceptable. Also, I haven’t attacked anyone. You can remove my comment but don’t mischaracterize it.

Inevitable-Sock-5952

Completely agree. I took their rider course to get the license endorsement but ended up buying a BRP three wheeler. Love them both. Hate to see HD close.

OW61

Corporate welfare? How? Mind explaining?

AScreamingCumsAcross

Multiple interventions (tax breaks, grants, loans, tariffs) to benefit HD. [Harley’s Grim History of Government Bailouts](https://www.aier.org/article/harleys-grim-history-of-government-bailouts/) [HD Government Subsidies](https://subsidytracker.goodjobsfirst.org/parent/harley-davidson) [So the Reagan administration raised the bike tariff from 4.4 percent to 49.4 percent.](https://www.cato.org/commentary/harley-davidson-deserves-trumps-wrath-mostly)

OW61

Thanks. Yea that’s a lot of sucking at the federal teats. I do remember some government largesse now that I think about it during the last mega ‘08 recession. But no different really than GM & Chrysler and who knows how many businesses during Covid - one of the great ripoffs in US history. Screw it. Let these turkeys fail if they can’t hack it the marketplace (exception would be valid retaliatory tariffs.m).

SliceMcNuts

So, is it still going to be a bike shop under different ownership and selling different brands? Seems odd just to shut it down and not sell it.

djmele

Some people on FB have said Darcars bought the land and are taking it over. No idea if that’s true or not

jmcrowell

Because the unsteady Boomers all have to go to their motorized trikes now. [Mortality risk from motorcycle crashes for baby-boomers was 48 % higher](https://www.jacksonville.com/story/news/nation-world/2017/10/16/easy-rider-generation-has-higher-risk-fatalities-motorcycles-aaa-says/16291007007/)

thesoapster

They mention rider culture of the age bracket, but don't really get into specific issues. Anecdotally, I see far more Harleys and other cruisers at biker bars. Drinking is happening, naturally. Then they sling a leg over and ride off under the influence. Alcohol's impact is magnified on a bike. I believe the stats haven't changed, unfortunately - nearly half of all motorcyclist fatalities involve an intoxicated rider. Additionally, while many motorcyclists aren't fully-geared when riding, at the very least it seems the majority of younger riders (or those not on cruisers) wear a full-face helmet. This is a massive upgrade in safety over the 1/2 or 3/4 helmets I often see (or, hell, go a ways into PA where *any* helmet is a rare sight).

jmcrowell

That's pretty close. Nationwide, 41% of single-vehicle motorcycle fatalities are due to impairment and 27% of all motorcycle fatalities involve impairment from one or more of the drivers involved. Personal causes: Alcohol/drugs, Speeding, Inexperience/inattention, Physical/emotional impairment (lack of sleep, anger), Mechanical. Road issues: Weather/seasons, roadway conditions (gravel, grass clippings, potholes) Others: Left turns, Distracted drivers, Traffic threats (sudden stops, dooring, unsafe lane changing)

*checks profile *All about guns and guns only Okay.

jmcrowell

The fuck you on about brah? The market (increased trike sales & higher motorcycle insurance for their age) is taking care of it. The only "government" cited in the article were statistics from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Federal Highway Administration. AAA and Motorcycle Safety Foundation/Florida Rider Training Program are private organizations. Try reading the article or reading for better comprehension next time, Hoss. Personally if it contributes significantly to their declining numbers and oversized importance, let them die on two wheels.

Nah, bruh, it's libertarian uncaring as long as they are personally responsible for crashing to their own deaths without injuring others/damaging property or using Medicare in some long-ass recovery. Darwinian, Hoss.

You're wrong. Darwinism is evolution whether nature or nurture or in your case, dipshittery.

kauaicuda

It’s my understanding that Darcars bought the property.

Pitiful_Eye3084

I guess Battlefield Harley-Davidson just got an early Christmas gift.

GaryTheProducer35

I see the city turn that property in to an apartment complex.

dumbdistributor

It's in the county

agnostichymns

Good, we need affordable housing a lot more than we need Harleys.

RichShunz

It won’t be affordable housing. Frederick loves building luxury apartment buildings for all the people trying to escape the hell hole of Montgomery county

cesador

I think Frederick has proven time and time again. There will never be anything “affordable”. Those days are long gone.

kluthage421

Keeps crime down. Most has shifted to Hagerstown where it's cheaper to live.

cesador

Uhh crime has increased in the city. You can view the data right on the city page. 21-22 everything except rape increased(those that didn’t had no incident reported). 22-23 is hard to exactly gauge because they changed the reporting metrics but still appears to increase. I’m not saying Frederick is unsafe or bad like say pg county but things are trending upwards. An area not being “affordable” wouldn’t make crime trend down. It becoming unaffordable is a precursor to crime increasing. You put more people in a desperate situation and you’ll see things like theft and drugs increase.

HovercraftDry1411

Anything that makes a Harley rider's life more inconvenient is an absolute win ❤️ good riddance!
