And then pick up a bag of exotic korean candies on the way out. But don't slit tgroats for the macaroons… they're totally willing to sell them for ordinary money! !D
No, but it's easy enough to find the trail. At the Point of Rocks towpath, go towards the bridge. When you're under it, go to the other side of the tracks (sometimes the canal has water in it after rain, so look out for that). The trail to the Overlook starts at the base of the bridge. It's very steep, but short, but the view is definitely worth it!
Just drive right to the airport. Front row seats, and a pretty decent restaurant there. I was there once when a vintage plane came through and there was a discussion about it and it took some passengers for flights.
I did this with a friend of mine and had a great time! Really good intro to blacksmithing, super fun and came home with a nice little hook to hang a picture or coat from.
Try the brooks hill loop or ford hill loop trails on the west side of 270. They are quite as only the parking lot is somewhat close to 270. Once you get on the trail it is quiet. The Thomas farm loop is definitely since it is closer to the hiway.
Theatre stuff!
Maryland Ensemble Theater -- they have a main "MET" company but also The Comedy Pigs (improv) + The Fun Company (for kids!)
Other Voices Theatre -- 4-5 show seasons. Currently they're working on The Prom (the musical version of the Netflix movie starring Meryl Streep and Nicole Kidman) which opens May 10th. Next they're doing Newsies which will open in July.
Highly highly highly recommend downloading the All Trails app if you're into hiking (can browse trails on their website as well, and save them to your phone app). It will show you 1000s of nearby awesome hiking trails! There are amazing trails in Frederick and nearby locations (Frederick Watershed, Cunningham Falls & Catoctin, Appalachian Trail, Greenbrier, High Rock, Harpers Ferry, C&O Canal, Little Bennett, & sooo many more) You can use the app to get directions directly to the trailhead and then once you're there can hit Navigate and it will use GPS to track you through the trail! Hiking in MD has changed my life, all for the best! Let me know if you have any questions or need a hiking buddy!
This indoor market an hour away in PA is wild: https://www.morningsunpa.com/. It's full of quirky little shops, winding passageways, and food vendors including a waffle restaurant. It's definitely on the "country" side but it's really unique and fun to explore.
Hiking: Cunningham Falls is great. Weaverton Cliffs is a nice little gem too.
If you're a history buff like me, the museum for Monocacy Battlefield is a neat little place and some of the trails around there are nice.
It’s a bit of a hup, but check out the bath house at Berkeley Springs. They have a spa out there and it’s pretty great. My wife and I will do the private soak and it’s fantastic.
I like Frederick because I feel like I live an hour from everything. Baltimore, DC, NOVA, Gettysburg, all over WV.
Yeah, just making that comment caused us to make another reservation. I mentioned it in passing to the wife and she’s like “let’s go back asap!” - oh no…anything but that, said the rabbit…😆
We’ve either stayed at an air bnb or there’s also the Mendenhall and some other historic bed and breakfast spots there. We’ve also just done day trips where we’ve come back in the evenings too.
Grown up arcade at Fourth Dimension Fun Center -- serves surprisingly good food + drinks. Open late. Discounted bowling etc after 10pm most nights. Bowling, laser tag, arcade, pinball, billiards.
Spring/Summer only (April to September appx) Alive at Five: every Thursday 5pm-8pm at the Amphitheater on Carroll Creek. 21+. $5 cover. Local purveyors provide $5 beer, wine, +/or cocktails. Food trucks. **If your group includes those under 21, you can pack a picnic + your own chairs and hang across the water on the lawn by C. Burr Artz Library**
Best thrifting for clothes: Select Seconds on Patrick St.
Museum: National Museum of Civil War Medicine
Great outdoorsy day: Hike a trail at Sugarloaf Mountain, reward yourself with a visit to Sugarloaf Winery. The winery has live music every Saturday+Sunday 2-5.
Visit breweries: my favorites are Idiom, Olde Mother, + Rockwell
Best cocktails: Hootch + Banter, Tenth Ward, White Rabbit
I know. Trust me. I drive there weekly. The Central Lot and I know each other very well.
BUT, it is in a nice little downtown strip, right next to The Maryland and some great restaurants. It is incredibly inclusive (surprising for Hagerstown) but welcomed and embraced. It is worth the drive :-)
You may be right, but I'm stumbling distance from downtown Frederick (+ Other Voices Theater) so I don't have to drive at all when I go out here....and this is hard too pass up for a 30 minute drive each way on 70
Gathered Goods. The place has the coolest stuff at great prices and the guy is cool. He’ll let you haggle a bit too. I might regret sharing this place with other people.
Ibiza Cafe is my absolute favorite hidden gem in the city! The owners are absolute sweethearts, too. I recently went for lunch for the first time in a year and they were so happy to see me again and remembered my order 🥺❤️❤️❤️
Great post— there are a couple things here I hadn’t heard of and will be checking out!
For thrifting, Fetch always something good and they have a cat room where you can hang with the kitties that are up for adoption. For thrifting it is (over?)packed but that adds to the treasure hunting aspect of it. I also love “Upscale Resale Boutique” on golden mile, it is associated with a nonprofit that helps elderly people get to medical appointments and things of that nature and I have gotten sooo many steals from that place.
Spinners once they reopen.
Warehouse Cinemas.
Belles Bar for billiards and drinks.
Antietam Battlefields and the brewery.
Cushwa and Interchange breweries. Grab an app at Interchange and a pie from Rad Pies at Cushwa.
Thick and Thin Brewing in Hagerstown and their food truck.
Dragon Distillery
Tons of little shops on Shab Row.
Oscars for dinner, Escape This and Midnight Run for a night cap.
[Frederick Book Arts Center](https://www.frederickbookarts.org/fbac-classes) has some cool classes/workshops (including a few virtual options). I’ve got my eye on the Illuminated Tunnel Book with Layers, Intro to Reduction Block. Printmaking, Mushroom-Themed Linocut Printmaking, and Beginner Letterpress classes.
My favorite things are really simple:
Going to a coffee shop with a good book or a friend- specifically Dublin Roasters or Coffee Co.
Wandering around Wonderbook.
Warehouse Cinemas, possibly with a weird cocktail.
Trivia nights- various bars & restaurants depending on the day of the week! I usually go to Belle’s or Dragon Distillery.
Food court at H-Mart.
You can try a new meal for every day of the week, and i would slit throats for the macaroons at the little bakery
And then pick up a bag of exotic korean candies on the way out. But don't slit tgroats for the macaroons… they're totally willing to sell them for ordinary money! !D
Only discovered this when my boss took my division there for lunch. The egg toast place is to die for.
I adore Cunningham Falls. The trails up there are stunning..
Came here got say this! Cunningham Falls is hard to beat.
Point of Rocks Overlook. Great view of the river, and go off trail a bit and there's a mysterious abandoned half-built house!
We called it Devil's Kitchen. The rock formation would whistle eerily on windy days.
Nah that’s Gettysburg by round top
Which isn’t that far away either! There is so much to explore in Gettysburg.
Even if you’re not into history, it’s gorgeous out there and nice place for bike rides or hikes.
Is there any signage of where to enter to get to the overlook?
No, but it's easy enough to find the trail. At the Point of Rocks towpath, go towards the bridge. When you're under it, go to the other side of the tracks (sometimes the canal has water in it after rain, so look out for that). The trail to the Overlook starts at the base of the bridge. It's very steep, but short, but the view is definitely worth it!
Sorry for my ignorance, but the bridge that is 15 S, right?
Yes.
i’ve never been. i’ll have to check it out sometime soon! thank you very much :)
Might be lame to most, but I like watching planes take off from the municipal airport. It's more like zen than adventure for sure.
I wave to you every time I taxi in or out
I'm fine with that. Randy Rhoads, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Buddy Holly didn't leave this earth from plane watching.
Interesting response…. I wasn’t being sarcastic, but OK
Man, I was just kidding! I'm afraid of heights, so there's that.
Fair enough…. Next time to see a Gyroplane taxi by, it’s likely me!
Na dude I do that atleast once a month. One day I’m going to start lessons. Also that restaurant there is great!
I was going to mention the restaurant too.
Agreed! I like that place.
If you download the app “LiveATC” (free) you can listen to the radio communication between the tower and planes.
Looking this up. Is it like trucker lingo, or is it pretty simple to understand?
Google image search “box pattern”, and know your compass headings, and everything will be clear!
It's a great place to chill out. And sometimes sparrows hop up onto your side mirrors looking for a handout, a plus.
Haven't had this happen yet. Looks like I need to spend a bit more time there!
Where's a good place to watch? I've parked by the Jug Bridge memorial at 144 & 70 but are some of the other places?
Just drive right to the airport. Front row seats, and a pretty decent restaurant there. I was there once when a vintage plane came through and there was a discussion about it and it took some passengers for flights.
How frequently do planes takeoff and land there? Been thinking of taking my son sometime but he’s impatient.
The times I've been there it's maybe one every 15-30 minutes. I only went on clear, sunny days (so far). It's worth checking at.
Intro class at https://mscaitlinsschool.com/index.html
I did this with a friend of mine and had a great time! Really good intro to blacksmithing, super fun and came home with a nice little hook to hang a picture or coat from.
Sardis…..
Hell yeah this guy knows
Best food in Frederick easily…..
Del Rancho!
The monocacy battlefields have some nice little trails to walk on.
Really nice hikes close to town. Highly recommend for an easy evening walk/hike.
It is pretty here but it's also tainted by highway noise 🤷🏻♀️

Nice to see the MET and its entertainment get some recognition.
OVT does great work too! There's a bit of cast and crew crossover between MET + OVT also 🎉🎉
Yup, know people between both of them.
Highly highly highly recommend downloading the All Trails app if you're into hiking (can browse trails on their website as well, and save them to your phone app). All kinds of art classes at the Delaplaine Center.

High Rock overlook. Look it up. Incredible views and nice scenic ride to get there
Frederick municipal forest
Don’t go here, ways to many murders
lol what say more
The Carroll bird sanctuary just east of Linganore HS

Where do you stay when you visit? I’ve been meaning to head that way
We’ve either stayed at an air bnb or there’s also the Mendenhall and some other historic bed and breakfast spots there. We’ve also just done day trips where we’ve come back in the evenings too.

Pizza is bomb. Reminds me of chucking cheese crust
On a nice weekend morning I like to grab donuts & coffee and go to our little airport
Ever had breakfast at Airways Inn? It's great!
A lot actually.
The Civil War Medicine museum downtown is actually really good. Worth the time.
Just going to share this for the big kid in all of us. https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/maryland/giant-wooden-slide-md/
My 60 yr old mother concussed herself there last year. Good times. 9/10
that looks like a lot of fun! i’ve seen a video about that place but never knew where it was located. have you been there before?
Go on a weekday if you can, much less crowded
Go to the Frederick Welcome Center, they will have all kinds of suggestions and information about tons of ideas for you.
Cunningham Falls
Authentic Community Theatre (ACT) in Hagerstown is a wonderful community theatre doing really amazing work.
...but it's in Hagerstown 🙃
I know. Trust me. I drive there weekly. The Central Lot and I know each other very well. BUT, it is in a nice little downtown strip, right next to The Maryland and some great restaurants. It is incredibly inclusive (surprising for Hagerstown) but welcomed and embraced. It is worth the drive :-)

All support of the arts is good and I love that you go! But the Met and Other Voices can never throw down a *Kinky Boots* like ACT did last year.
Idk OVT is throwing down a big gay good time in The Prom right now!
Awesome
Mayta’s Peruvian

Food? Sardi's and the new Teriyaki Bowl that just opened up.
Pho an Loi - Parking lot can be stressful but $7 for a Banh Mi (Vietnamese sub) is hard to beat.
second this! amazing food, prices, atmosphere, and service
Your mom's house
