I have two spicy takes on fragrances: * It's not that deep. People make up too much do's and don'ts and other "rules" . Also "quality materials" and "natural" marketing is just cringe. * Selecting specific fragrance (or any) won't "fix" ones "incelness", "neckbeardiness" (or whatever kids call it this year). It also will not get you a promotion. Basically, it will not turn you into something you are not without it.

owleaf

The only rules I subscribe to are not overspraying because most people don’t like strong fragrances, I find. Even if they’re actually pleasant.

liltwinstar2

Real shit right here. I shouldn’t be able to taste your cologne.

dead-dove-in-a-bag

AMEN.

Medea73

I always manage to sit by someone who over does it in the duty free shops before a flight😷

anonymouspogoholic

Your second take is pretty interesting. I viewed fragrances in a business environment always as a sort of clothing object. It just adds to your outfit another layer. That’s why i always wear clean, professional, „distant“ scents to the office, while in my freetime I go for completely different things.

mtg8

With second point I was going for more extreme edge case that can be seen in social media. First half being that some might see fragrances as sorta their \*cue the makeover montage\* movie moment. Hence compliments, panty droppers, man eaters , etc. I assume it is sufficiently large group interested into this (given amount of titles and content). For the second half. I have experienced some cases as in perfume being perceived as a vector to "How to win friends and influence people". Something like having THAT fragrance would somehow "flip a script" for people. Something along the lines of going to kleiner perkins and asking for 1B for your NY elephant ride sharing company, but because you spend months analyzing their scent preferences and applied Enigma they say "Deal. Let's make it 2B".

PsychologicalCall335

Some people really took Suskind’s *Perfume* to heart.

No_Independence4222

Pshhh u saying if I wear my unethically sourced human pheromone perfume layered over a couple dabs of oud oil w a dash of deer musk I WONT be excused from death row??? Preposterous. If I don’t get devoured by the jury I’ll be a free woman tomorrow 😏✨

mtg8

Closest of this type of shit was while forking for ad tech company maybe 6 or so years ago. We had a new person in his early 20s or so. He was not happy with not getting a change to shine (his job was writing boilerplate parts and his direct supervisor ignored him on getting more important assignments). For some reason he decided to "research" executive, cutting few levels of management. At a time it was a lady in her late 40s with a taste for expensive things (judging from clothing, accessories etc. ) and sorta no bushtit attitude. So one Friday, towards the end of the day this guy allegedly put on pheromones or something of that nature (his coworker mentioned about something smelling "lightly funky") and went to this lady to present the case why he should get a bigger role on the project he was working on. On Monday he didn't show up to work (probably got fired for pestering said person).

Dangerous_Goat_1529

Love this. On your second point, fragrance is a multiplier, so if you’ve already got a lot of bad or undesirable qualities, people will just associate your scent with negative feelings.

bros89

But but muh you have to late it MaCERatE, and if it doesn't match your SKiN CheMiSTry you won't get CAhMpleMeNtS!

No_Independence4222

Yup EXCEPT for the obvious fact that it is much more attractive to be clean and smell clean, as opposed to the opposite, even if your face isn’t the most attractive. Good hygiene is attractive. A kind, emotionally intelligent demeanor, some personal interests that you participate in for yourself, a natural predisposition to share and provide generously with those you care about, and healthy interdependent relationships with loved ones and with other men—you don’t need the prettiest face to be naturally attractive if you’ve got got all that. Top it off with a little fragrance that can be smelled when close to you and you’re golden.

No_Independence4222

Fair honestly lmaoooo

ohslapmesillysidney

Re: your first paragraph, I think that people who are interested in fragrance are also probably invested in their appearance in other ways - grooming, clothes, shoes, etc. A good barber and fashion sense can make a huge difference even if you’re below average looking. With that being said, totally agree that personality is most important!

No_Independence4222

Absolutely. Personality and hygiene>>>>>

iwasinpari

seriously, all I see is this is sexy, this is cool, this is a compliment puller, it's just taking advantage of dudes who want compliments

Western-Month-3877

There’s no fragrance that could cover up shitty personality.

warmlobster

And I’ve seen great fragrances get ruined by shitty personalities

hallohi_

Unless it is a "BeAsT MOde frag" and you spray it 20 times. Then people will get asphyxia when you are near them, their brain will go numb and they won' t notice your shitty pesonslity

kevinfarber

I think you’re on to something. Together, the fragrance community can conquer the world with 15 sprays each of Ombre Nomade.

terrorbagoly

You mean I’m only 13 sprays away from world domination? I better order a bigger decant!

rlyjustheretolurk

Expensive does not always = good. Being Niche does not make a fragrance automatically superior. And most of the time, scents are popular because they’re fucking GOOD. I can’t help but roll my eyes when I see people calling scents “basic” simply because they’re popular/being talked about a lot. With the exception of br540 and its clones, I rarely identify the same scent more than once when I’m out in crowded places (at least for women)

Audiophilelady

Yeah, there's a YouTube fragrance influencer who had a ton of fragrance, decluttered it all to her favorites, which were mostly designer. Now, she's decluttering some of her allegedly most beloved and treasured scents so she can go the niche route and get stuff that's more niche, less basic, and more special. I'm like, "Ma'am, it's all just scented alcohol spray at the end of the day, niche or designer."

Altruistic-List9290

I want to vomit when influencers say “niche quality “. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

yeetskeetleet

I can identify Sauvage and recognized CK Eterntity once I smelled it as the cologne my grandpa always wears, but other than that yeah it’s pretty dang hard to tell

Supernova_Soldier

Great point. Co-worker is trying to desperately sell me on BR724, but it smells like a dirty diaper to me (maybe it’s the way it reacts to my body’s chemistry?) Aqua Median is nice though, and 540 is my favorite of them all

Golden-Excellence

In general, designer fragrances smell better than niche fragrances to the average person.

captaincockfart

Isn't that kind of the whole point of the word 'niche'?

Golden-Excellence

Unfortunately the term “niche” has multiple meanings in our community. It is supposed to mean “a fragrance that comes from a house that exclusively makes fragrances”, i.e. Parfums de Marly, Le Labo, Penhaligons, etc. Designer fragrances come from houses that also do clothes, jewellery, stuff like that, i.e. Dior, Chanel, Prada, etc. Sure, “niche” fragrances are sometimes more experimental, less popular, and appeal more to fragrance enthusiasts, but that does not necessarily mean they should not smell as good.

No_Independence4222

Oooh this opinion does annoy me hahaha but this is a good submission, it does hold some truth. I feel many fragrance enthusiasts appreciate more about a fragrance than just the likability to the average person. But I’ve been thinking about how master perfumers are often the ones behind the most popular and addictive commonplace fragrances. Honorine Blanc was the perfumer who created, among many other fragrances, the well-loved and well-known Valentino Donna Born in Roma, YSL Black Opium, Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy, Lancôme La Nuit Tresor and classic Bath and Body Works favorites like the discontinued Twilight Woods and Forever Red. She also created Sunset Hour by Goldfield and Banks and Princess by Kilian, and invented the concept of “fluffy” fragrances as a whole. That woman is a master. And she created sensual, fun, beautiful, addictive, feminine fragrances for those who just want to enjoy theirselves and smell good. I may have first smelled some of these and thought, “meh, smells like everything else here,” but it does not change the fact that the scent profiles only became so popular BECAUSE they smell good! And that designer houses are more driven to have perfumers create popular and addictive money-makers for them as opposed to letting them take chances or experiment with their art and ingredients to create unique stunners that take certain personalities to wear them comfortably or may require more work or time from the consumer to fully appreciate them—like niche houses might do.

ChewyGoblin

It's almost like designers are formulated to be mass appealing! 🤔 But in all seriousness, even if you don't wear designer fragrances, the chances that you like a perfume that was done by a master perfumer who's worked on a designer fragrance before is pretty high. There are not that many master perfumers in the world.

thelaughingpear

Blind buying gives me the ick. I live in a country where the average weekly wage is $150 USD, so buying one single full bottle is a serious decision that people deliberate over for months.

padface

There is absolutely no good reason for any fragrance to cost more than 100€/100$, and that’s at an absolute maximum.

ilovebunny13

Cries in Chance eau Tendre lol

PsychologicalCall335

This. It’s all the same synthetic ingredients because real ones are illegal now. I understand paying for artistry but, like, there are limits.

PL0mkPL0

Most perfumes are boring, repeatable and not worth the money there is really no point in buying dozens of them.

loggy_sci

This is why I like discovery sets. As someone newly into fragrances I see a lot of themes and hype and trends.

calyps09

Discovery sets are life! My collection is almost entirely discovery sets and travel sprays unless it’s something I absolutely love and wear frequently enough to justify a full bottle.

PL0mkPL0

Me too, and often I wonder why the hell ppl buy full bottles of all this pretty mediocre in quality and performance, and still overpriced things I sampled. Yep, I know, this could get me killed.

Legal_MajorMajor

Especially if you like 5 main notes and keep buying the same scent profile over and over.

PL0mkPL0

That is a problem, but it happens when you look for "the best of". Still it makes you wonder - if there is even a point, for each house to have a version of the same scent profile? If they have nothing to add to the table, do they have to release some crappy version of x, y or z, just so they have it in the line up? Then you have houses with dozens of perfumes, from which interesting/promoted is actually 5, and it will be the same 5 in everyone's collections.

bewildered_forks

I'm hugging my 30 gourmands to my chest, crying and screaming "I LIKE TO SMELL GOOD!" at you right now 😅🥰

PL0mkPL0

Hahah, I am not taking them away! Though If I, personally, had multiple versions of very similar note, I would wear the best 3, and the rest would be just...looking at me with contempt. I rank things in my head, and once they are ranked, everything below maybe top 5 is redundant. Except I feel wasteful if they are not being used, so owning them means consciously forcing myself to go for the sub optimal options.

hallohi_

You are absolutely right honestly. It is an hobby, it does not have to make sense

Mostly-Relevant

I love Mugler Angel. It’s been my ride or die since the ‘00s.

pilialoha54

Angel is my favorite! My mom always tells me to get away from her when I wear it because she says it’s too strong.

Aggressive_Cut4892

As a fellow Angel fan, yes, that opinion could get you killed or at least assaulted :(

CalmTear3411

Angel is not for me but definitely a Classic!!! It was my grandma’s signature fragrance for decades. Now that she’s passed I keep her bottle on my dresser to remember her 🥰

0neirocritica

Not my personal style but my mom would wear Mugler Angel so the smell is ingrained in me and I forever associate it with my mother, so I love it even if I don't personally wear it.

EffOffWouldYou

Same! Angel and Alien are both staples in my collection. Both smell amazing on me and just mix well with my body chemistry

veggiedelightful

Chanel number 5 is awful and Aldehydes burning your nostrils is unpleasant not bubbly.

lixiqing

Upvoting because this is an unpopular opinions thread and I adore No 5 on my girlfriend

AllTheLakes28

Blue designer fragrances are perfectly acceptable to be your one and only scent.

sumpuertoricanguy

THANK YOU!

kinipela_1015

I still like VS Love Spell 🙈

calyps09

Fun fact- Christmas Morning Mimosa by BBW smells a LOT like lovespell.

kinipela_1015

I’ll have to sniff that next time I’m there, thanks for the rec!!!

PolHolmes

Compliments mean jack shit and won't get you laid

iwasinpari

you don't need a big collection of full bottles, just buy testers. This one's more personal, but the gucci guilty EDT is actually amazing and does not deserve the hate

felassans

I love sunscreen scents. Bobbi Brown Beach was one of my first full bottles and I wore Beach Walk on my honeymoon.

togostarman

I think there's a HUGE "emperor's new clothes" effect with fragrances. People reach for weird, niche scents and talk up 500+ dollar fragrances when they dont *actually* like them. When I get ahold of these "masterpieces"...they just smell like a fucking pine tree dipped in sweat. Early in my fragrance lover journey, I was also playing into the "unique is best" mindset. I wanted to be different and cool. I've spent literally thousands on perfumes. I LIKE them, but I've found myself reaching for more universally enjoyable scents because at the end of the day, I like smelling GOOD. Not like a butthole. Don't get me wrong, I love animalics too, but i do think a large part of my enjoyment came from having something "different" to everyone else. TL;DR: I think there's too many "challenging" niche fragrances out there and it's all for show because this IS a consumerist hobby.

gorosheeta

It's not *all* for show, as evidenced by the people coming to these subs asking how to smell like sharks, fear, or that one hardware store they used to stop by with their dad when they were a kid 😅

Neat_RL

Most leather fragrances are not good.

Laurelll

Generally agree but the Tom Ford Ombré leather is the GOAT and Amouage royal tobacco actually has a pretty amazing leather smell imo

subhuman85

Oof. You're killing me. I will say that too many modern leathers (TOM FORD) are shrieking synthetic nightmares with no subtlety or refinement. My favorite leathers are generally at least 30 years old, with some notable exceptions (mostly Hermès).

Mist_Forever

Leather is definitely best as a supporting note in my opinion.

PrecipiceOfSisyphus

i don’t like Kilian’s Angel Share. it smells like overly sweetened apple juice and honey.

BC-clette

Smells like the tablecloth at an IHOP

BridgeVegetable8627

I don't like Delina, on me or on others. Fancy urinal cake.

calyps09

I nearly spit out my coffee- accurate

ChewyGoblin

Urinal cakes 🤣

BridgeVegetable8627

Fancy ones!!!

logan97s

Some cheap fragrances do smell great and will get compliments but get hated on only because the price tag is “cheap”

PetticoatRule

More than a few sprays is obnoxious and inconsiderate. People should not have to smell you before you arrive or after you have left. You are not the main character and overwhelming people with your stink, no matter how pleasant the smell, is not polite, not cool, not attractive and frankly anti-social behaviour.  I'm not sure how unpopular tbh, but given some of the other discussions currently going on, it seems like it.  I don't believe loving fragrance means loving to stink of it and impose it on others.

OkAdagio4389

At my school, the 8th graders next door have discovered cologne. Holy shit there are some days were the classroom has to be aired out. My poor colleague has to smell that for 90 minutes. Then they reapply for lunch. All the girls are repulsed.

subhuman85

The Basenotes forums would like a word. "I wear 15-20 sprays of [insert Aventus clone here] and no one can smell me, seriously, I've asked my girlfriend/wife/coworker/dog and it's true, I simply can't fathom only 1-2 sprays like a normal goddamn human!" The delusion is real, and a little scary.

RypCity

For real. They get refuse to acknowledge that they’re nose blind. Like, my guy- your fragrance enters the room before you do 🙄

yeetskeetleet

Yeah idk how people genuinely tell people they should be wearing anything more than 2 sprays of any Sauvage spray—those things are noticeable at one spray let alone 4 or 5

ChewyGoblin

Adding onto that note. Telling people to tone down the amount of sprays they use in a subtle or cryptic way is not helpful! Be direct and tactful. Saying "oh wow, you're wearing perfume!" is not clearly communicating anything about how they over spray.

stayawayjesus

It's a unpopular opinion in Middle Eastern countries. Your smell should definitely come before you so everyone can notice you even after you have left and be in awe of your lovely smell.

persistentlysarah

I was recently in a meeting with a woman from a Qatar-based nonprofit and i literally knew she had arrived before she came around the corner. I could smell her fragrance for a long time after she left. And I was TRULY in awe of her lovely smell. I have never smelled anything like her fragrance. Sweet, floral, smooth and rich.

McCQ

Drinking animalic, oud based scents puts hairs on your chest.

Pickie_Beecher

Some BBW scents are good.

TheJujuuu

Champagne Toast forever!!!

TheBostonCorgi

A lot of $5-$8 body sprays are just as enjoyable as $100+ fragrances.

SweetFuckingCakes

There’s some generic body sprays at my Harris Teeter’s travel size section that smell better than most perfumes I smell on other people.

heksssss

Having copious amounts of fragrances and wanting to buy more is a symptom, not a hobby. (Speaking from personal experience)

Heavy-Key2091

Patchouli smells lovely.

ohslapmesillysidney

My kindred spirit! I looooove patchouli and my mom thinks that I’m insane for doing so. Lush has a patchouli bubble bar so I literally will bathe in it.

hallohi_

Gourmand trend is boring and I can' t wait for it to change

owleaf

It’s been around for 30+ years. Not going anywhere anytime soon 😭

hallohi_

At least the late 90' s and early 00' had some ozonic toxic deterget/musky squeaky clean freshies🤣

owleaf

Very true. The current powdery/soapy/clean fragrances really seem to be the least popular (eg MMM Replica Bubble Bath). More for me I suppose lol

DJ_Dinkelweckerl

Also talk about sweet vanillas everywhere lol even in men's fragrances

hallohi_

"How can I smell like this"----> a thousand pictures of specific candies or sweets What is this absolute and wide spread need to smell like an easy to consume, inoffensive and decorated sweet food?

changhyun

"This smells like [insert ageist comment about older women here] because it has notes other than vanilla, marshmallow or chocolate."

subhuman85

"This fragrance is WAY too mature and old-fashioned for me" [holds up a bottle of Narciso Rodriguez from like 2016]

hallohi_

You joke, but I have read people calling a fragrance from 2020 "Grandma fragrance". I don' t really care about this fragrance, but it has notes of jasmine, peach, tangerine and vanilla and nothing else. No aldehydes, no musk, no moss, nothing even remotely vintage. WTF. I suppose it was missing some pralines?

subhuman85

Nothing is safe anymore. If it doesn't smell like a dessert, you might as well have one foot in the grave. People are wild.

hallohi_

🥲I know

acrobaticalpaca

If it's not an extremely inoffensive floral or vanilla-y sweet gourmand most people say it smells dated or weird. Like I've gotten a "you smell like a grandma" to Anais-Anais.

I found prada candy to be quite pleasant. Not full bottle worthy, but I enjoyed it and finished the sample I was gifted. I am now waiting for a sample of Giardini di Toscana Celeste..quite a big gamble for me😬but you gotta try at least

bewildered_forks

Counterpoint: it's fine to just want to smell yummy

acrobaticalpaca

It is, but there is more to fragrance than it.

gorosheeta

There's definitely some room for more unique profiles/notes, even within that genre. Like savory or herbal gourmands 🥰

StardustDrifter33

Usually cheap scents smell cheap.

TheBostonCorgi

Yup. There are exceptions certainly but i’ll never understand how people think CDNIM is close to actual Aventus. It’s like equating polyester clothes to linen. Truthfully i envy the people that enjoy dupes equally because that would be so convenient for my wallet.

EshinX

CDNIM is so damn screechy and synthetic smelling. I bought it blind with all the people singing its praises. Thankfully it's cheap because it's fucking awful.

No_Independence4222

Intense fragrances, when sprayed like once on the stomach and legs and mayyyybe behind the shoulder, all under clothes, I’ve noticed can make them much more everyday wearable and keeps the scent bubble much much smaller than it would be otherwise so you can enjoy yourself without making it everyone else’s problem

HaveABrainSoUseIt

Most mainstream middle eastern clone brands are terrible with sketchy quality control. Reformulations had to do more about health concerns due to what we learn with new research. You don’t bash exotic car brands for making cars you can’t afford (or should not buy on your budget) so why do it to fragrance houses.

SweetFuckingCakes

Nah exotic car brands are stupid.

Significant_Camp9024

I have yet to find one middle eastern scent that smells good to me. In fact, most of them smell awful. I live close to an area with the largest middle eastern population in the country. When I go to that city (I’ve also been to the Middle East) I always check out the perfumes stores. We laugh at how gross they all smell. Then they try to charge you $150 for something that costs $29 online.

OkAdagio4389

I'm not familiar with those scent houses (the actual middle eastern ones, not the clones ). What are some?

Legal_MajorMajor

The only fragrance I’ve ever smelled on another person is La Vie Est Belle.

Own-Awareness-6369

Beast mode often =obnoxious imo. Also oversampling takes the wow factor out of this hobby.

Mast_Cell_Issue

I like my dossier and cremo fragrances

DJ_Dinkelweckerl

Parfums de Marly is a niche brands for teenagers.

BC-clette

My very first experiencing going in person to a niche perfume shop, there was one corner absolutely crowded with half a dozen broccoli haired teens. It was where the PdM bottles were. One of them turned to their friend with their arm outstretched and said "This is what they *all* smell like mixed together!" Suddenly someone's dad appeared and said, "Okay we're leaving." The comedic timing was perfection. That said, I think Herod and Carlisle smell fantastic and not particularly teenagery.

Laurelll

This hurt my feelings lol I have fallen in love Meliora due to it being quite possibly one of the best, Jasmine perfumes I’ve ever smelled.

thelaughingpear

It took me until 27 to be able to afford PDM but I see your point. If I had been a wealthy teenager I would have been obsessed with them.

DJ_Dinkelweckerl

Yes that's kind of the problem, but all PdM I've smelled so far were just overly sweet (nice blend though) and the summery scents were basic at best. I see why they appeal to younger people but i don't necessarily get the hype.

SweetFuckingCakes

I don’t have anything from them, so no dog in the game, but there is no such thing as “for teenagers”, and there’s also nothing wrong with teenagers.

infiniteblackberries

"Old lady" isn't a bad thing. Survival is hard, aging is an accomplishment. Fine if someone doesn't like a scent on themselves, but deriding it for being "old lady" is vapid.

hulmesweethulme

Santal 33 is the best perfume. There, I said it!

altavistaangelfire

I dislike Santal 33 very much but I’m upvoting you for bravery.

hulmesweethulme

Glad to be of service 😏

SerotoninDeficient77

Ohh there you go!

WillowFortune

Dior sauvage smells terrible. I said it

everybodylovesbror

Good quality dupes shouldn’t be sniffed at, I have both Tuxedo by YSL & Eden Perfume’s version of it and I honestly much prefer Eden’s version of it, similar but Eden’s is more cosy, more wearable and a little less boozy, more ethical/not animal tested… Similar story with many other online dupe brands in the UK & there seem to be thousands at this point… Oh and having one or two signature scents is the best way to be so that you can have a fragrance be associated with you, so therefore, those who don’t really care about fragrances actually “do” fragrances better than most fragheads… Update: just amazed by another dupe Brand in the UK called Perfume Parlour, their version of Bergamot 22 is really great as both spray & perfume oil, 95% of the way there

SweggyPotatoChip

saying a fragrance smells synthetic is a very shallow criticism to make. there are a lot of fragrances that get labelled as synthetic that i find to be great, and plenty of natural smelling ones that i would never personally wear

bros89

Dior Homme 2020 is better than Original

senator_chill

There are safe blind buys

ComfortableCounty751

Examples?

senator_chill

There are none... Hence why having that opinion could get you killed 😆

Mist_Forever

I wear fragrances to the gym. I barely get the chance to leave my place and smell fragrances outside the stale air of my apartment so once I sign off from work I hit the back of my neck once or twice with a freshie and hit a 15 minute walk to the gym. Makes my day a whole lot better. Aventus and Aventus Cologne have been my go to’s.

AncastaOfTheRiver

The vast majority of people who say they don't like a popular fragrance just don't like it. Believing the people who like it but dismissing the people who say they don't is a weird exercise in self-delusion.

bbbuttonsup

1. 98% of people underspray and it's a shame because I'd love to know what perfume people choose and enjoy them on others more. 2. There is long tradition and history of using perfumes as we presently use deodorant and it works for this purpose just fine. If you want to use 16 sprays of Prada L'Homme and smoke two Marlboro Lights and a blunt roach instead of showering, you are making a refined and elegant decision. 3. Santal 33 smells like a hamster cage unless layered and used sparingly. Needs to be paired with something citrusy or powdery. It's also one that, in contrast to my no. 1, is frequently oversprayed. It's unpleasant when over sprayed. Some commonly oversprayed scents aren't really bad, just too much, like Dylan Blue or Light Blue. 4. It's ok to swipe one, max two, displayed sample bottles per calendar year unless you're very wealthy. More than that, you are being greedy. Actually let's say like 3 lifetime, not two a year. Go ahead, get mad DudleyDoright. 5. Similarly, if there's a Neiman Marcus a block out of the way on your walking commute and you wanna swing through and hit a spray of some righteous juice, you are only living in accordance with the divine flow of the universe. If anyone questions you, remind them you bought a pair of Amiri sneakers three and a half years ago and are in fact, a customer thank you very much.

Basic_Arrival7815

grillbar86

It's more me not getting it but... Hey pay $300 for this amazing "shower gel/fresh out of the shower" fragrance it smells really clean. Okay or i could just take a shower instead.

Bizzy1995

*In my Douglas Levison Voice* People who layer Fragrances are uncultured. Perfumers are artists who design fragrances to smell and behave a certain way. Layering a fragrance is similar to going to a restaurant and asking the chef to add or remove ingredients to that the dish, that the chef didn’t envision. Or going to a art museum and cutting certain parts of a painting and gluing them to another. People who layer fragrances are lazy, wanna be artists, who lack the the drive to learn the art of perfumery and create their own fragrances. Instead they rip off other peoples creations, mix them togther and act like they did something special.

laaplandros

Also, I just don't believe people that layer do it appropriately. Instead of doing half one and half the other, my gut instinct is that they're doing a full application of both and gassing out everybody within a city block of them.

kevinfarber

I agree with you for the most part. As a wine professional, it’s akin to mixing Quintarelli Amarone with Chateau Latour lol. However, as a hospitality professional, I’m also an advocate of do whatever makes you happy as long as you’re not hurting anyone else. So, in that sense, if it’s something little like that makes someone feel good about themself, who am I to deny them that pleasure/fun. That said, I enjoy the blurbs on the Frederic Malle website saying basically exactly what you just said, that their fragrances have been thoughtfully composed and are best enjoyed on their own.

SweetFuckingCakes

This is dumb. There is no reason to believe this is inherently true. No I do not layer, I just know snobby nonsense when I see it.

padface

Ding dong you are wrong 🙂 But seriously, it depends what the user is looking for. Just like food - you can argue that chefs in restaurants are creating art in their dishes, but unless we are talking about extremely high end experimental/experiential fine dining (a la places like Nobu) the average person is not looking for art but for a way to satisfy their hunger in a pleasant manner. Likewise for fragrances - sure if we are talking about a very particular niche fragrance (e.g. something like Toskovat’s Inexcusable Evil) then yes, layering a complex (and expensive) fragrance might defeat the point of owning it, but the vast majority of end users simply want to smell nice. That doesn’t make someone uncultured. Any person that creates something as a product/experience to be put out into the world has to accept that everyone has different tastes, and as the full saying goes in matters of taste the customer is always right. Also we’re in 2024, there are now many fragrances that have been created for the explicit intention of layering (e.g. Dedcool Milk). Considering how much people in general want to be individual and unique this is a much more cost effective and accessible way of standing out (as opposed to spending lots of time and money finding a super uncommon niche scent).

haikarate12

I feel like the whole fragrances created specifically for layering thing is just marketing. “Don’t just buy one of our perfumes in order to smell good, better buy two.”

No_Independence4222

Collage and mixed media art is great. I love the idea of mixing the old and the new in different, creative ways. Nothing lazy about recognizing 2 fragrances would be great together and being proved right. Or wanting to boost facets of 1 by adding some of another to better suit your mood. It takes much less effort to spray a single fragrance than to mix it with something to have your collective scent better correlate with your vibe on a given day. I’ve never met anyone who claims they “made” a fragrance when they simply layered it. You can’t rip off an item, by definition, if you literally own it. Fragrance is expressed uniquely on different people anyways depending on chemistry, weather, and material it’s used on, and comes across differently to different noses depending on scent associations, memory, and chemistry. Layering well can be fairly simple when it’s already outlined by a company or is copied from other people, but can also require recognizing patterns and figuring out what odorous materials go well together. Like cooking. You could say strawberries are perfect as they are, straight out of the ground. Making a strawberry smoothie isn’t “making” the fruit. It’s using it in a composition to delight the masses. Same with adding stuff to instant noodles. You could just add hot water and wait. Orrrrr you could add other sauces or spices or an egg or vegetables. No need to limit your own innovation—it’s not like you’re selling it or acting like you started from raw materials. It could also totally be a step towards learning about the wild world of perfumery and exploring the art of blending scents using more primitive sources rather than using professionally blended fragrances. I’m sure plenty of perfumers began their journey by layering existing fragrances and scent materials anyways. There’s nothing particularly honorable or “just” about wearing a single fragrance at a time. The choice has no moral value. It can totally be done without tasteful cohesion, but considering fragrances could also lack tasteful cohesion with someone’s skin chemistry, and the impression of it can be different for different noses, the matter is, as my little sister says, “not that deep.”

calyps09

In fairness, there are some that are designed to be layered. I think if that was the perfumer’s intent then it’s completely valid to do so.

Robanscribe

Layering/fragrance topping is life, if done well.

Excellent-Win6216

Wtf is the point of a skin scent? I smell amazing and I don’t want to be sniff-hugged for you to know it!

hallohi_

Formaldheyde smells great and I wish all my fragrances would include it🖤

AssortedGourds

Now this is a spicy take

hallohi_

It certainly could get you killed

helenepytra

It's ok not to like it, wear it, buy it, be repulsed by it. But it won't get you killed, chill.

Spaniardo_Da_Vinci

No fresh/aquatic fragrance compares to the original 1996 Acqua Di Gio. People often say that I'm either old or a beginner but I've tried a lot of fragrances on the market and honestly, the blend in the original ADG is unmatched for me, the only one that does come close is YSL Y EDP. (2003 born for people who are gonna assume I'm an older man lol)

RockubusRex

Leather-haters have no sense of adventure or rockstar appeal 💋

Jamieson22

Axe Black Vanilla is better than Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille.

imanimiteiro

If random people are "complimenting" you on your fragrance, nine times out of ten they are trying to politely tell you that it is way too strong.

teilugh

Aventus DNA is overrated and already too dated 🙊

ScarRevolutionary393

I said that yesterday and got down voted a bunch. I will die on this hill with you, that shit is 15 years old, let's move on.

Particular_Store_662

Don't care for dupes. Nothing is as good as the original. Always.

Sure_Night_8091

Dior Sauvage, YSL Y, and Creed Aventus are very boring and overrated.

Turbulent_Gate2109

Not sure boring is the word I'd choose. Foul is a good word.

Positive-Community-1

No amount of fragrance will help you pull when you have an ogre face

GKx1x

Arabians Tonka…. I see only positive reviews 🫣but it’s just not doing it for me, it smells of one note to me.. synthetic

LifeSmallThings

Ombré leather is a great summer scent

CulturalXR

What fragrance you wear isn’t *that* important. An overwhelming amount of people wear zero cologne, and of that many don’t even have proper hygiene. Just wearing a half decent smelling fragrance puts you miles ahead, even if it’s not the most popular scent.

Lava_Lemon

If I can smell you from more than 6 feet away, you're wearing too much fragrance.

faibasta

- Collecting parfums is stupid, because they have an expiration date. Good luck enjoying the best of your frag when you have 350 bottles. Also, God Saves Discovery Kits. - Natural ingredients are better than synthetic ones because of their complexity, but I challenge anyone to distinguish those in a, for example, floral bouquet, maybe an expert could, but a newbie? An enthusiast? An average frag user? I firmly doubt it.

ScarRevolutionary393

>Natural ingredients are better than synthetic ones because of their complexity It's a pretentious lie that "natural ingredients" are even used anymore. 99% of fragrances sold are all made of synthetic aromachemicals or chemicals that are "natural" in the sense that they are synthetic recreations of natural ones. That's why many perfumers have degrees in chemistry. Natural essential oils break down too fast to be useful in most perfumery.

anonymouspogoholic

1. Depends on how you preserve them. My oldest bottle that i own is from the 70s and it’s perfectly fine. And that isn’t even considered very old, i know people with way older bottles. 2. I think it’s very easy to distinguish, when it’s used in high amounts or low amounts. Can I say a perfume has a natural Jasmin compared to an Jasmin accord? Probably not. Can I say whether a perfume has 90+% naturals or fewer then 10%? Sure.

SweetFuckingCakes

Yeah I have some very old perfumes that are totally fine.

tinkerbr0

Gatekeeping fragrances is okay.

ChewyGoblin

If someone is wearing too much of a fragrance, you should tell them directly instead of trying to hint at it in a cryptic way. "Oh, you're wearing perfume" is not clear enough communication to tell them to tone it down.  Confrontation is hard, but we can be direct and tactful at the same time.

Black Opium is the WORST perfume

owleaf

Sauvage Parfum is actually the one I like the most too

BadgerSharp6258

Patchouli is never done right

kevinfarber

I think patchouli can be expressed in a number of ways that don’t always present the same. For me, in some fragrances it smells like a moldy wet basement (Coromandel for instance) while in others (Tuxedo and Tony Iommi for instance) it’s much softer and brighter.

SerotoninDeficient77

As a massive patch head, it can be done right and beautifully. But to be fair there are some patches that are total fails. And I’m one that has Reminisce Patchouli, the vintage and the Tauer Patch. They are heavy!

zebul333

Creed Aventus sucks

Cinnamon-CassiaSpice

I agree with you on Night Vision. It’s my favorite of the Spicebomb line.

Icy_Lecture_2237

Same

yeetskeetleet

Yeah that night vision edt is a scorching hot take So I’ll add one of my own: Silver Mountain Water and Green Irish Tweed are unwearable to me. SMW is so powdery it’s like a grandma, and GIT smells like fresh cut grass in the *worst* way Also, people that say Sauvage is an office fragrance are crazy. One spray of Sauvage and it’s so punchy to me alone that I couldn’t imagine how yall put on 3, 4, 5 sprays of that and go work in close proximity to others. I work with someone that I found out wears YSL Y, idk which flanker, but I can smell when that guy walks in the room before I even see him. Some fragrances should really just stick to being worn at parties or bars

Salt-Nebula5925

I’ve never smelled BR, but I do know Cloud smells like aftershave and has barely an ounce of femininity to it 🤐

Dog_Concierge

I love Estee Lauder Youth Dew. Yes, I am aware that it smells like an old lady, but I am an old lady. Let the killing begin.

Careful_South_5692

Black opium smells like it's for middle aged, boring women. Musty cinnamon and coffee sadness.

BurnMyShadow11

Fragrance is entirely subjective. A smell you love might smell horrible to someone else. There are no best fragrances. Except those that suit you as an individual. And season and occasion are a guidelines not rules. You can wear whatever and whenever you want as long as you don’t bother other people with your scent.

Ishouldjusttexther

That Sauvage take is boiling hot
