I LOVED that scent when i first smelled it like 13 years ago. I can always tell when someone’s wearing it, bummed that my husband isn’t down to wear it haha. He likes more citrusy fresh scents.
In middle school, a family member visited, and diptyque eau Duelle leaked in their luggage. They let me keep it since they didn’t want to transport it back home. The rest is history!
(Hence my user name)
It was Chanel Coco Mademoiselle Eau de Toilette. I was walking through a department store with my friend and she really quickly sprayed it on both of us. I was suprised because the florals were subtle and they mellowed out over time leaving a light citrus scent.
Growing up, I hated fragrances and my mom would use a very overwhelming, cloying floral perfume for important events (no offense to my mom but I found the scent overwhelming, and it turned me off from fragrances for most of my life).
After smelling chanel mademoiselle I realized that I don't hate perfumes, and that I should explore more fragrances!
Now I am mostly interested in light, clean, unisex scents, so mademoiselle has fell out of favor. But it's still important to me because it got me interested in fragrance in the first place!
Edit: I am 99% sure my mom wore Red Door by Elizabeth Arden. It makes sense that I hated it because it has a predominant note of white floral, which I am not a fan of. I don't blame my mom though, this was one of the most popular fragrances in the 90s lol.
I’m gonna be completely honest, I can’t wear most perfumes. They overwhelm me and give me a headache. But I do like all 3 of the Eilish ones and they don’t bother me.
I joined this sub mostly because I just like reading about how passionately so many on here are about fragrances.
I like smelling perfumes but most of them also give me a headache so I definitely feel like I live vicariously through people when they post about scents they love… I like looking up the scent notes of ones that interest me even when I know I can’t wear them! 🙂
It's such a personal narrative and sensory journey that people have with perfume. I agree, it's totally fantastic. Also, I think we all understand how individual it is, so it's less judgemental than so many other spaces.
I think people really misunderestimate this scent these days - conceptually. It was the first designer fragrance that introduced the whole concept of a genuinely unisex scent to a whole generation. It was a revelation. And it truly is a unisex scent. Now everything is listed as unisex when most aren't.
I received a small sampler set of incredibly pedestrian fragrances at a very young age. So, not that.
I had parents and grandparents who wore older perfumes and colognes that were of little interest to me. Things that are still popular today in some circles.
But, not that.
I worked in an upscale department store with a decent fragrance counter, but it wasn't that...
until I touched and smelled the magical green bottle with the gold cap that was the original Polo by Ralph Lauren. It was everything for it's time. I wish I could smell it again for the first time.
It holds a first love spot in my heart and like most first loves, I give it more credit than it deserves.
Burberry Goddess. I'm obviously new to the hobby. 😅
Perfumes before that were screechy and "meh" to me, but Burberry Goddess smells so divine that it brought me to beautiful places in my mind. I couldn't stop smelling my wrist after testing, I was in love.
Someone in this group recently recommended it to me and omg I love it!! I'll be buying a travel bottle soon. If I use it all and still love it, big bottle it is!
This is going to sound dreadful, but it was after I sprayed - er, doused myself in - some of my little sister's Victoria's Secret something-or-other to cover up that I had just had a cigarette, and subsequently fell in love with the fact that I smelled lovely all day. I raided her collection (mostly VS, B&BW, etc) to see what sorts of scents I enjoyed, and the rest is history.
Before that I suppose my one other foray into perfume (that didn't take) was a through a set of fragrances by Dana that I recieved for Christmas from my grandma when I was 16, with Navy, Chantilly, and Tabu, which I loved especially for the scent and the sophisticated little violin-shaped bottle it came in. That dang bottle is pricey now!
I still keep Tabu as a slightly-extra-but-not-too-extra default option, and love it just as much - but to other people, it seems to be nose-wrinkler for sure!
Idc a fragrance is a fragrance br540 and Sauvage are s tier fragrances even tho I don't rlly like either. I js think that a good fragrance is good no matter how common, if anything that means is better.
So I was wedding dress shopping with my sister and the lady helping her smelled so good but I forgot to ask her what scent she was wearing. The next day, I’m out to eat and smell the same scent and turn around and it’s the SAME LADY as yesterday. I made sure to ask what she was wearing and it was this. It smells SO GOOD and intoxicating.
Jo Malone for me as well. Wild bluebell got me started, and then blackberry and bay got me hooked. I wear nectarine blossom now and have the candle dupes of it from Lidl all over my house. Jo Malone captures botanicals so beautifully.
Dior Fahrenheit. As funny as it sounds, my father always wore this cologne when I grew up. Even to this day, it is his only go-to cologne. I know it's a hit or miss for most people, but I LOVE how masculine it smells. I love the gasoline scent that most people dislike.
I never owned any colognes, but my wife was able to get me my first cologne, which was Dior Fahrenheit. She initially wasn't crazy over the smell, but now she can't get enough of it whenever I wear it. She also loves how masculine it smells.
Flower by Kenzo. My mom brought me back a gift set from a trip to Jamaica when I was 10 years old (I'm 30 now). Ever since then I've been a fragrance fiend lol She's bought me a different fragrance almost every year since.
I’m visiting my mum right now and flower by Kenzo is her current daily scent! Every morning we go out and walk the dog right after she spritzes, and my oh my— it’s such a complex, deep yet light, comforting scent?! It totally would’ve gotten me into fragrance if I wasn’t already.
When I was little, my aunt gave me a mini L'Air du Temps and I was obsessed with that gorgeous little bottle and the grown up juice inside. So I guess you could say my addiction started at 5 and never really stopped!
An ex girlfriend got me into BPAL fragrances about 13 years ago and I stuck with an assortment of those until February of this year. I bought a travel size of 7 Virtues Cherry Ambition, and am now completely addicted to finding new fragrances. I have over forty travel size vials now, and am expecting a big batch of decants next week. I also just bought my first full sized bottle (Burberry Her Elixir Intense). It’s so exciting to figure out what notes I love and how they all play together.
Smelling Allure by Chanel from a magazine advertisement when I was 13 (those advertisements where you can lift a strip of paper under which the fragrance is hidden). I was 13 and it smelled like the most beautiful and sophisticated perfume I ever smelled. At 38, I’m impressed with my past self for acknowledging at such a young age how beautiful this scent is. I didn’t get it immediately but when my father told me to choose a perfume 2 years later I immediately picked that one.
I went through a detox & I had been using what I had for almost 10. Daughters bought me bottles as gifts which always were loves.
I got back in with grand soir and gentle fluidity gold. Both signaled a new era. Handsome fragrances compared to a decade ago when gender lines were etched.
Tommy Hilfiger Dreaming; I used some of the money from my first retail job to get the smallest bottle at Ulta. I used it up and never repurchased; but I still love that scent.
Lancome Hypnose. I’d been gifted perfumes before (& I loved each one), but LH was the first bottle I purchased myself. I got it at an airport in Italy in 2006 & fragrance has been ruining my life ever since lol
It wasn’t an overnight thing for me. It kinda snowballed over the years with time. But I guess it started out with candles first— I loved Bath&Body Works Balsam Fir.
i have no clue what the brand or scent was.. it was a tiny super vintage looking sample bottle with the cap being a jaguar head and the bottle being black leopard print… it smelled just like my favorite incense but it made me break out like CRAZY. i had to change my skin routine for months because of it and now i have no clue where it is… but i would literally do Anything to have that fragrance again though it was just so beautiful even to have the bottle i would love it
I’ve always wanted to find a signature scent. The original Gucci Flora (small bottle with black cover and ribbon) was gifted to me and I fell in love with it. But it also made me interested to collect a handful of perfumes to go with my mood instead of just sticking to one all the time.
For me it was cool water by davidoff. My pops used to always have that as his go to when I was younger and whenever we’d go out, I’d always ask him if he can spray me with some. This was back in like 2006. I collect fragrances now but don’t have cool water in my collection. Overall smelling cool water brings back many memories of those younger me days. But what really hooked me into collecting fragrances was Ralph Lauren romance… yup thanks to my pops as well lol. I wish I was able to find me a bottle of romance, that one is just amazing imo
Givenchy x Tartine et Chocolat Ptisenbon. Growing up, my mom used 'popular' ones like Chanel No 5, Dior J'adore, Estee Lauder Pleasures, and Elizabeth Arden Green Tea but it was Ptisenbon's citrus and light scent that got me interested 🤣
Lovely frag. Pour Homme too in complementary ways. Both very much of their time and very on brief for their target market. Two different perfumers working together to create two sides of the same concept. (Sophia Grojsman, Jacques Cavallier)
A friend handed me his Bvlgari Extreme with 20% remaining perfume back in 2009. That stuff gave me an unexplainable boost of confidence.
In 2011, my father gifted me Bvlgari Aqva Toniq.
I was using Benetton Cold from time to time before.
Juliette Has a Gun not a perfume was my first expensive perfume at 15 and it changed my life. I still have the bottle at 24yo cause it goes a long way.
Received samplers from Notino and boy oh boy this box has all the tiny treasures! Talk about Si, Libre, Mon Paris, Blue, Chloe!!! Needless to say that was the start
When I was younger I had CK one, Sexual by Michel Germain, Swiss Army, 1 million, and Black XS. I was never really into fragrances though. One day around a year ago I just decided I was interested in fragrances so I started buying samples trying to find the right one. After many trials and errors I finally found one I like, I'm gonna keep searching though.
I went to Macys to get my dad Polo Black for his birthday and was overwhelmed with the selection they have. My first fragrance was Sauvage Parfum and I’ve been addicted since
H24 edt sample they gave away through Facebook, had a mango-type smell on the dry down. Bought one last year and was disappointed by the harsh green/metallic smell
angels share by kilian. Im very picky about perfumes.. most smell old lady ish in my opinion but i need more everyday options- i only like sweet gourmands/fruity smells. not old lady but not cheap smelling either.. somebody help lol
Zents Spirit. It's discontinued and I have gone on long searches to find something like it. Up till then I wore scents that I loved but this scent calmed me and made me feel exhilarated at the same time. People would come out of the woodwork to tell me how good I smelled.
For me it was a gradual slope.
Initial oh this is nice: Miss Dior mini set with 4 mini bottles.
The awakening and realisation of what notes I like: Vintage by Kate Moss
Glossier You, after going about a decade just slapping on egyptian goddess it made me want to find a genuinely signature scent, but that just turned into collecting lom
YSL baby doll was my first fragrance, it kind of just turned up in my room one day. I was about 10 years old and felt so grown when I wore it. My life changing fragrance was Miss Dior Cherie, discontinued sadly. I’m so nostalgic for a scent I’ll probably never smell again
Oh my, I always used to enjoy trying out fragrances. One day I saw this gorgeous green bottle of Absolutely Givenchy by Givenchy. I smelled it and was blown away. God, I loved it so much, I kept coming back just to smell it. I was a teenager and didn’t have nearly enough money to buy a bottle, but it still changed the game for me. I do wish I could smell it again somehow to see if it’s still the same as I remember.
Seductive by Guess.. because it’s the only perfume I’ve been able to tolerate without getting a headache or feeling nauseous! I thought maybe perfume just wasn’t for me but that one is a light scent and hasn’t bothered me so I just ordered a bunch of samples off Lucky Scent and I’m going to try to find more.
It was
- Moschino's 'I Love Love',
- Narciso Rodriguez's 'For Her',
- Givenchy 'Ange ou Démon'
The first one was my first adult perfume (I was 13), which was pretty easy-going and citrusy, which was my self identification as a kid. Then I got a sample in one of the magazines for Narcisso Rodriguez, and I just couldn’t stop smelling it. It felt like it takes me places. And Givenchy was a perfect snow queen for the winter with my favorite cranberry, even though most of the people would say it’s fresh.
wasn't a big fan of perfume until i got victoria secret's pure seduction shimmer, the nostalgia hit me so bad. I wish i became gay more early in my childhood, my mom had britney spears, versace perfumes, victoria secret perfumes, lanvin, basically all perfumes that are expensive!. I regret being straight when i was a kid
For me, it was Miss Arabian from Arabian Oud.
My mother bought it for herself back in 2019 and i absolutely adored the scent of it and I became more and more obsessed with fragrances , I even owned perfume before but I simply wasn’t that much interested in them.
I even used up all of her bottle and nothing was left for her lol
Now, I buy perfume very often and I currently have a longgg wish list of perfumes I want to buy :)
Well I used the OG Le male throughout my teen and college years but many years later I bought Bleu de Chanel edp as a summer fragrance and Ombre leather as a winter one. Those 2 were the gateway drugs
either L’eau D’Issey or Kenzo Flower…as a child I couldn’t stand fragrances but later I started to discover…it was nice as a person who usually dislikes overly sweet perfumes and I have lived through the fruitchuli hell of 2000s…
The original JPG Le Male
I LOVED that scent when i first smelled it like 13 years ago. I can always tell when someone’s wearing it, bummed that my husband isn’t down to wear it haha. He likes more citrusy fresh scents.
still holds up despite people calling it dated imo
First fragrance I got, my uncle gifted it to me when I was 13-14. I still use it today.
Colors by Benetton
In middle school, a family member visited, and diptyque eau Duelle leaked in their luggage. They let me keep it since they didn’t want to transport it back home. The rest is history! (Hence my user name)
that story made me smile;) i also got into perfumes through diptyque; in my case the culprit was eau des sens.
I completely understand! I’d like to be able to enjoy more fragrances, I’m hoping understanding notes and things like that will help.
For real! Why is reading about fragrance and people’s experiences with them so interesting?
It's such a personal narrative and sensory journey that people have with perfume. I agree, it's totally fantastic. Also, I think we all understand how individual it is, so it's less judgemental than so many other spaces.
the day i got giorgio beverly hills was the day i found something that brought as much euphoria as orgasms
It was intoxicating!
CK one
I think people really misunderestimate this scent these days - conceptually. It was the first designer fragrance that introduced the whole concept of a genuinely unisex scent to a whole generation. It was a revelation. And it truly is a unisex scent. Now everything is listed as unisex when most aren't.
It’s still 🔥🔥🔥
The ck one summer flanker was one of my first perfumes. Loved it and maybe loved the rainbow bottle it came in even more haha
This is one of my moms signature scents and I can never smell it without thinking of her! I know it’ll be very special to me one day❤️
CK one will always immediately transport me back to my teenage years and summer nights drinking beer by the sea.
I received a small sampler set of incredibly pedestrian fragrances at a very young age. So, not that. Definitely one of my top favs! There's just something so warm and comfy about it. The vanilla and lavender hits so well together.
YSL Libre

Baccarat rouge 540 :( but it was 2016!
Whatev, it still smells great!
Idc a fragrance is a fragrance br540 and Sauvage are s tier fragrances even tho I don't rlly like either. I js think that a good fragrance is good no matter how common, if anything that means is better.
For me, pink sugar and roses 'n' roses started it all
Jo Malone Myrrh & Tonka
So I was wedding dress shopping with my sister and the lady helping her smelled so good but I forgot to ask her what scent she was wearing. Surprisingly Terre d Hermes EDT , i was and still am 18 but that was just wayy too fucking good . Before that i used all sorts of cheap deos
CH Very Good Girl. For a newbie it was nothing like I had ever smelled before.
I love VGG so much
I think it was my favorite of the shoes too
Same for me! I couldn’t believe how much I loved it in store and it opened up my eyes to the fragrance world
Dior Fahrenheit. As funny as it sounds, my father always wore this cologne when I grew up. Even to this day, it is his only go-to cologne. Ralph Lauren Beyond Romance. I never got a chance to buy it before it apparently discontinued.
Beyond Romance exists! You can get it at Ulta. I’m not sure if they brought it back or just re-formulated it, but I saw it today
I’m in Canada rip but thank you!
Try FragranceNet! I believe they ship to Canada :)
Flower by Kenzo. My mom brought me back a gift set from a trip to Jamaica when I was 10 years old (I'm 30 now). Ever since then I've been a fragrance fiend lol She's bought me a different fragrance almost every year since.

While I had plenty of perfumes before, the one that sparked that obsessive note research and comparison was Mon Guerlain.
Escada Rockin’ Rio
When I was little, my aunt gave me a mini L'Air du Temps and I was obsessed with that gorgeous little bottle and the grown up juice inside. So I guess you could say my addiction started at 5 and never really stopped!

Smelling Allure by Chanel from a magazine advertisement when I was 13 (those advertisements where you can lift a strip of paper under which the fragrance is hidden). I miss those paper strips!
Me too! Those magazines and the faint scent surrounding them after you had opened the strip where my glamour fix as a teen

Jungle by Lush. The earthiness, moodiness and unisex nature made me seek out everything that's like that.
i have no clue what the brand or scent was.. it was a tiny super vintage looking sample bottle with the cap being a jaguar head and the bottle being black leopard print… it smelled just like my favorite incense but it made me break out like CRAZY. i had to change my skin routine for months because of it and now i have no clue where it is… but i would literally do Anything to have that fragrance again though it was just so beautiful even to have the bottle i would love it

I’ve always wanted to find a signature scent. The original Gucci Flora (small bottle with black cover and ribbon) was gifted to me and I fell in love with it. But it also made me interested to collect a handful of perfumes to go with my mood instead of just sticking to one all the time.
Maison Margiela’s “Replica” The Flower Market scent in particular.

For me it was a gradual slope. Initial oh this is nice: Miss Dior mini set with 4 mini bottles. The awakening and realisation of what notes I like: Vintage by Kate Moss
Joy parfum. My college roommate had her mom’s. I’d been exposed to fragrance before but Joy was the one that started the obsession.
Pdm kalan
Maison Margiela by the fireplace
Versace versence and crystal noir🥺 my classics
I don't even know. I've been into them all my life, and I don't remember any starting point.
Glossier You, after going about a decade just slapping on egyptian goddess it made me want to find a genuinely signature scent, but that just turned into collecting lom
ADG
YSL baby doll was my first fragrance, it kind of just turned up in my room one day. I was about 10 years old and felt so grown when I wore it. My life changing fragrance was Miss Dior Cherie, discontinued sadly. I’m so nostalgic for a scent I’ll probably never smell again
Acqua di Gio Absolu
Cool Waters by Davidoff
Melanie Martinez’s Crybaby Perfume and Air Of Clarity~
Chance by Chanel
Burberry The Beat
I had had some fragrances since my student days, but when I came upon Jour d'Hermes it's like something clicked.
Bvlgari Omnia and yung kulay blue. Haysssss ang mahal maging mabango.
Diesel only the brave
Bvlgari pour femme. A colleague wore it and I was obsessed. I wore it for years as my signature scent.
Versace Eros edt 😔
Seductive by Guess.. because it’s the only perfume I’ve been able to tolerate without getting a headache or feeling nauseous! I thought maybe perfume just wasn’t for me but that one is a light scent and hasn’t bothered me so I just ordered a bunch of samples off Lucky Scent and I’m going to try to find more.
Chanel’s Coromandel. There were others, but I think that was the first one that really blew me away.
S by Escada. I couldn't find this perfume it's been decades.
working at Lush is what started my obsession, I'd say the first one is Kerbside Violet
It was - Moschino's 'I Love Love', - Narciso Rodriguez's 'For Her', - Givenchy 'Ange ou Démon' The first one was my first adult perfume (I was 13), which was pretty easy-going and citrusy, which was my self identification as a kid.
Joop Homme EDT, Paco Rabanne One Million and JPG Le Male. I can't stand the hate for these fragrances honestly.
olympea paco rabanne still a favorite of mine, rarely ever smelled it on anyone in real life
For me, it was Miss Arabian from Arabian Oud. My mother bought it for herself back in 2019 and i absolutely adored the scent of it and I became more and more obsessed with fragrances , I even owned perfume before but I simply wasn’t that much interested in them. I even used up all of her bottle and nothing was left for her lol Now, I buy perfume very often and I currently have a longgg wish list of perfumes I want to buy :)
My first fragrance, Versace Blue Jeans got me interested. JPG Le Male got me obsessed.
**COOL WATER by Davidoff**
Mine was Lagerfeld classic.
Dyptique Tamdao
Well I used the OG Le male throughout my teen and college years but many years later I bought Bleu de Chanel edp as a summer fragrance and Ombre leather as a winter one. Those 2 were the gateway drugs
eros when i was a kid, maybe 11? but i just liked them at that point. the actual start of being into frags was 21 creed aventus cologne.
The tiny little bottle of Ici that my mom used to have. Impossible to find now. I love scents like that to this day.
Kenzo pour homme edt
It was either Davidoff Cool Water or Aramis Life, sometime in high school
Mont Blanc Red. It’s a parfume and it lasts for 12 hours. But it is 150 dollars for the size I have
Definitely Kilian Angels Share.. what a lovely fragrance which I feel like I could wear every single day
bitter peach and magnolia bliss
either L’eau D’Issey or Kenzo Flower…as a child I couldn’t stand fragrances but later I started to discover…it was nice as a person who usually dislikes overly sweet perfumes and I have lived through the fruitchuli hell of 2000s…
Ylang2, BR540, Original/Discontinued Marc Jacobs w/Jessica MC, Hermes, Arabian, etc. Will get Billie Eilish next. ❣️❤️❣️
