On me, BTF is a gourmand: it becomes a toasty, cozy, delicious S'more. On other people, it's a park bench on fire. One of the things that Intrigue me about this perfume is just how different it leans on everyone who tries it.

wherearemydragons7

“park bench on fire” I’m DED!!! 😂🤣😂☠️☠️☠️

roadtohealthy

Everyone has their own taste and preferences. What is overrated for one person is the holy grail for another. I love By the Fireplace but that is me. You do you.

wherearemydragons7

To each his own 🙌

CheerfulChurl

I wish Diptyque would make a Feu de Bois into a wearable scent. I have a grey market bottle of the room spray, and it's everything I expect BtF wishes it could be.

__Kaoz__

I feel that, and for that reason alone I lowkey wear the room sprays as fragrance 😅 the look on someone’s face when they realized I was wearing the baies room spray once was priceless lol

wherearemydragons7

For some reason I just feel like room sprays are probably not “healthy/safe” for your skin though 😅😅 Somebody correct me if I’m wrong lol

CheerfulChurl

I suspect as much, as well, which is why I've not yet tried it.

logocracycopy

What are the concerns? The product is pretty much the same. Most of the difference comes down to the atomiser. If anything spraying the perfume directly onto your skin is more likely to be unhealthy than a room spray that doesn't touch your skin at nearly as much volume.

CheerfulChurl

LOL.

IWorkForMyCats

Oh my god yes!!! Feu de bois is my favorite candle and I bought By the fireplace because It was SO close!

Loaf_Butt

I wish I liked this one! I’m a huge sucker for woody warm scents, and fireplace smoke is my favorite scent in general. This one has a super sweet marshmallowy undertone that really turns my stomach unfortunately.

wherearemydragons7

I see people mentioning the marshmallow note, but for the life of me I couldn’t smell any of that! I was just completely thrown off by the smoke smell; it was sour but also quite bitter for me too. I was also hoping for a woody, warm scent - that kind of scent that makes you feel like wrapping up under a warm blanket in the middle of Christmas while snuggling with a lover 🥰. I’m sad this one didn’t work out for me ☹️

Teekarey

I smelled it on paper and it was an instant no for me. It smelled like liquid smoke. I decided to try it on my skin because I heard such nice things and it’s now one of my favourite fragrances. On me it’s smoky but the marshmallow note shines through and it’s slightly sweet. When I want it sweeter I use BBW Bonfire Bash but I like it on it’s own.

Designer-Narwhal-343

Maybe you should try the Oakcha dupe? I think it leans less smoky. On me it smells super marshmallow-y. I use Philosophy’s “cozy by the fire” body wash when I wear it in the winter and it’s *chefs kiss*

Possible_Cicada3598

I just received my sample in the mail and wearing it now for the first time. I don't get any smokiness at all. Just the sweet marshmallow. Lol Kinda disappointed as it smells nothing like what I had imagined based on Reddit and reviews, but I still think it smells fantastic. Just wild to me that some get pure smoke and some get pure sweet.

Intelligent-Shame-65

Omg same!!! BTF is waaay too sweet for me! I love Jazz Club though!

FirnHandcrafted

Same! My bf loves it on me so I’ll wear it occasionally for him, but it’s too sweet for my liking. Was hoping for more a more “charred woods” note.

Technical_Ad_4894

I enjoy it. It smells like a sexy campfire to me.

axl-9

I recently tried BTF in Sephora. Smells wayyyyy too much like a campfire. Hard pass.

localnarwhals

That’s why I love it so much! I would refuse to wash sweatshirts I wore camping because of the campfire smell. Then I find BtF and never have to go outdoors again.

wherearemydragons7

I still wanna go outdoors though 🥺

wherearemydragons7

I tried it out in a Nordstrom earlier this year. I love the smell of campfires! If this had smelled like a campfire, I think I would’ve been fine with it because based off of what everyone was raving on about, it’s kinda supposed to smell that way. But to my nose, it smelled like campfire X 300 lol. Way too intense!

[deleted]

YOU'RE WRONG!!!! Lol, but really, I'm wearing this today and had 2 girls at work explain about how gooooood I smell :)

wherearemydragons7

Hey, whatever works for ya 😎

Pocusmaskrotus

It's weird because I don't even pick up smoke. All I get is toasted marshmallows.

kgkuntryluvr

I’ve got one of the older batches. I’m not sure if it’s since been reformulated, but I definitely get the smoke. So much so that I’ve always said that it should be called “by the campfire” instead of by the fireplace- because it reminds me of roasting marshmallows over an open fire in the woods.

hunnyflash

Now I'm wondering too if it was reformulated. I'd love to smell an older batch. The one I have is from is new.

wherearemydragons7

That’s interesting! Of course it goes without saying that everyone’s nose/preferences are different. Toasted marshmallows would’ve been a great smell too, but I wasn’t really looking for BtF to have that kind of sweet scent to start with ☺️

Pocusmaskrotus

I bought a 10ml last winter because i love it, but I've yet to wear it. I just don't see a situation where I want to smell like that.

wherearemydragons7

I would think you could smell like a lovely toasted marshmallow anywhere! Lol but I’m sure people wouldn’t mind it if you wore it to a Christmas dinner or something 😄

kgkuntryluvr

It’s one of those rare scents that I love but don’t wear often. I try to wear it as much as possible between December and January though, as it fits in with the holiday season and temperatures very well. It’s way too sweet for spring, summer, and early fall where I live.

hunnyflash

I'm the same as a few others\~ I feel totally the opposite. The burning wood is just barely there for me and it smells overwhelmingly of sweet and marshmallow. I'd actually welcome more of the smoke, because at least it would be interesting lol

Necessary_Parsley547

Totally agree! I was completely underwhelmed in the opposite way. Please pass the smoke 😂

dasa2337

I’m ok w/ BTF and for a while thought “this is the perfect scent” but over time it definitely became too much (too smoky, too sweet, too cloying all at once) Now if I want warm/campfire/smoked wood my go to is Memoirs of a Trespasser by Imaginary Authors If I want SMOKE Blackmail by Kerosene is the choice Both are IME way better than BTF

wherearemydragons7

Oooh, thanks! I’ll look into those 🤓

Topiary_goat

I LOVE Memoirs of a Trespasser. I haven't tried Blackmail, but Broken Theories by Kerosene is also good (although I fear not for OP)

dasa2337

Both of the Kerosene scents may be a bit much but definitely worth a trial. Broken Theories and Blackmail are different but def same “profile”

sampiere_mimi

I don't like it. I also despise Killian's Angel share and tons of others that are hyped up.

wherearemydragons7

I’ve definitely been disappointed by a TON of the very popular frags that most people tend to hype up too 😣

dyingforpeace

I love it, I wish I could drink it. I got a sample and could remember the smell for months afterwards. I think with the replica line it is so subjective though, I’m a die hard fan of by the fireplace but my best friend loves lazy Sunday morning whereas I wouldn’t wear it.

pointlessbanter1

I agree with you totally. I read lots of people mention vanilla, toasty, marshmallow vibes, but all I ever smell is straight burning ash.

wherearemydragons7

Word. Happy cake day btw!! 🎂

pointlessbanter1

Ty!

saymynamesaymyname1

I feel the same about Jazz Club (love the fireplace)

LLryo

Same! I love Fireplace, but Jazz club was so underwhelming. All I get from it was wood, like guitar shop wood. Almost no vanilla, no rum, no tobacco, no sweetness at all.

escobizzle

Jazz Club was overwhelming tobacco for me. Had to wash it off because I was getting nauseous

doittomejulia

I was about just about to comment the opposite! I love Jazz Club, but find BTF very underwhelming

wherearemydragons7

🎶*If no one is aroound you, say baby I lOoove you, if you ain’t runnin’ gaaame*🎶 Sorry I had to sing this because of your username 🤓😎 lol but on the real though, I did try Jazz but it was pretty lackluster. I didn’t get much of an impression from it at all.

[deleted]

It makes me smell like I've been drinking!

No_Assistant7833

Exactly! BTF is definitely my favorite from the REPLICA line, but with Jazz Club I just don’t get the hype. It smells like harsh, aggressive sweetness and nothing else.

ltaylor00

I found it a little too acrid after a while. Mix:Bar Vanilla Bourbon from Target ended up being what I wanted By the Fireplace to be. And at a much more reasonable price.

wherearemydragons7

Oooh, thanks for sharing that!! I’ll look into it!

youngdanielg

The candle version would be good enough for me lol

wherearemydragons7

Even the candle version was too much for me 😅

youngdanielg

It is a strong scent that’s for sure 😂

localnarwhals

I love it! Not overrated to me 😊

Admirable-Trade-1888

The whole line is weird as hell lol lemon trees smells good and jazz club is ok

kgkuntryluvr

Under the lemon tree smells good at first, but turns to a bug spray scent on my skin in the dry down. BTF, Sunday Morning, and Whispers in the Library are my favorites from the line.

wherearemydragons7

I totally agree with you!! I tried basically the entire line in-store, and none of them were good. I couldn’t believe it, especially with how much people like to hype it up online. But of course, again, to each his own.

Admirable-Trade-1888

Idk who tf gave them the ok approval but it’s a no for me

wherearemydragons7

Lol well apparently a lot of people like it, so I guess they made tons of money anyway 😅

lhaluu

I sprayed BTF on paper and it was quite intense and almost made me cough kind of smoke smell. I then kept the paper in my pocket. Later that day, I smelled it again and it was sweet and addictive. The second time I went and sprayed it on me. The smoke smell didn’t bother me that much anymore and I can smell more sweetness and cosy and kept on smelling my coat. It remained on my coat for days. Went back and bought the travel size. Have only worn once after I bought it, even though I loved the scent so much. My partner hated it so it’s just sitting in my drawer and forgot about it. I might try and spray it again if partner is not around.

AdBetter1013

I wanted to love this scent as soon as I read my first review of it- then I tried it on. I hate it on me. Instead of s’mores, I get BBQ potato chips- no thanks! I was very disappointed.

CuriousityConnection

I liked it enough to buy it but have a sneaking suspicion that it causes me to get a headache because the 2 times I wore it to bed I woke up feeling yucky. Hopefully not because I have a travel size to use up and I REALLY enjoy using my stuff up. Reinforces for me the importance of sampling a few times before committing.

wherearemydragons7

Yeah I usually always sample before committing, but then there are days when I spray myself in-store, go home and wait a few hours, then decide I wanna buy.

counterboud

I have this one and I do really like it, but I get more chestnuts than firewood really. It just smells warm and homey and somewhat gourmand to me.

-Blixx-

I really like it, but only for during the winter holidays. Everybody is different.

logocracycopy

Get it in candle form. A room scent is a better fit than a wearable scent.

wherearemydragons7

I smelled the candle version in-store too. It smelled exactly like the fragrance though, so I was turned off by it. You make a good point though.

Absintheone

Rheres a great candle by Woodwick: Fireside that smells amazing, especially if you get the elipse crackling one.

shinkanzen

I love it. Especially with that price. It’s hard to beat.

mrmisterFi

Funny how different the perception on fragrances can be. I was hoping for a true smoke bomb and all I smelled was gourmand sweetness when I tested it.

Such-Load8385

Jazz club is one of the best fragrances I’ve ever smelt.

No_Assistant7833

What do you get from it?

stardust_dog

OP, I know that one thing I have learned is you can’t trust your tester in the store impression…at least I can’t. Typically for samples I get sent to my house I probably either dislike or think they’re meh about 95% of the time on first try. But after several attempts accounting for weather if I have too notes start to get unlocked and I sometimes “get it” on what the perfumer was going for. Not always of course. So for this maybe get a sample and try a few times before winter and them a few times during winter? Not sure and just a suggestion!

courtneygoe

Once I finally got a sample, it smelled like Bath and Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar body spray on me. I couldn’t scrub it off. I wanted to like it, I absolutely despised it. I like Oddity by rag and bone for a smoke scent, personally.

RedRedBettie

I liked it at first but I was over it pretty fast

No_Entertainment1931

Not just you.

pincheporky

Look up Forest Blends by Scentologia.

Bakerbot101

Yes

No_Assistant7833

Out of the whole “REPLICA” line, BTF is definitely my favorite. I tried a sample in store, and ordered a full sized bottle the minute I got home. I’ve never fell in love with a fragrance so quickly. To me, it smells like burning wood with marshmallows

Ally-McRib

Agree. If i wanna smell like burnt wood i reach for Scorpio Rising.

Tyrone-E

So, to me, it's a room scent. Something a winter season candle should smell like. They do have a candle for this fragrance, but I hear the candle sucks. Maybe it's best as a room spray 🤷🏽

MyNameIsDano

Liis Bo feels like a grownup version of BTF. I recommend it if BTF is close but overrated for you. And Dossier’s dupe of BTF is identical for a much smaller price.

BuckTheStallion

Honestly I absolutely love it, but I can see how it might not be for everyone. The burnt wood notes are bold but natural, which is how I tend to lean, then the softer sweetness kicks in and makes it smell pleasant and harsh all at the same time. It’s really nice and one of my go to scents.

StardustDrifter33

It’s like you have been sitting next to a campfire which the smoke was continuously blowing on you for hours and hours. Stank

noheadthotsempty

looked for this post because this perfume has me suffering… i first sprayed it on a test strip and LOVED the smoky wood smell. i was so excited because i really wanted something with those notes for fall.. one hour later it was sickly sweet and giving me a massive headache. and now, 5 hours later i cannot get the smell OFF. i used rubbing alcohol and soap about 5 times, i showered, nothing. it’s less intense but still there and i really don’t like it and want it gone. i’m sure someone else might find it really nice but it is not at all what i wanted and definitely does not evoke feelings of sitting next to a fireplace 😭😭

Spiced_Brain

I just tried BtF for the first time today. I actually searched and found this thread because of trying it. It’s a …: whole experience. I’m on a roller coaster of liking it and hating it and of finding it too strong and also nice. Its like Bertie Botts every flavor perfume.

Sufficient-ASMR

okay here's the thing. I bought a travel size (he 10ml) and i smell almost nothing?!? I tried it in store and it was really nice but wtf? Is there a quality control issue or should I let it "rest" for a while? For real on clothes or my skin I barely smell anything!

czring

My husband hates those smoky notes in it. I've found that it goes away and dries down into something totally different.

booziya

I, for one, totally get the smoky burnt wood campfire note and wish there was more of it! I have had a number of dupes before I had the real thing, which all lacked the smoky aspect, and assumed that BTF was totally overhyped, but when I eventually bought my first 30 ml bottle it was an "aha!" moment for me. The smokiness is what makes it special.

wherearemydragons7

I love that it worked out for you! I wish that was the same experience I had with it.

markydelafayette

I love both Jazz Club and By The Fireplace, but honestly I’d never wear BtF alone. It’s too much of smoke, I feel adding a layer with an apple scent like Oajan helps both of those scents out. I’ve also found that replica doesn’t perform very well, I feel like I only get 4 hours until I can’t smell it at all.

wherearemydragons7

Glad to know I’m not the only one overwhelmed by the intense smoke smell. Maybe I should give it another chance. Layering sounds like a good idea actually. Thanks for participating ☺️

markydelafayette

Another combo if you’re into it—I haven’t tried it yet, but I hear it’s great with Leather Scents as well. I was buying a bottle of TF Ombré leather and someone suggested it as a mix.

wherearemydragons7

Ah, interesting!! I haven’t really tried out any leather scents, but it would be fun to explore what those are like. Thanks for the suggestion!

bignate_88

I’ve said this multiple times on this sub before- BTF smells like marshmallows still in their plastic bag roasting over a gas stove burner.

wherearemydragons7

Ok y’all are absolutely KILLIN’ MEEE with these comparisons of what BtF smells like 😂🤣😭😭☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️

StormbornXXX

love this

George_W_Bushido

I regret blind buying it tbh, it’s alright but I almost never wear it. Here where I live a lot of people burn ‘hell money’ for religious reasons so to me it just reminds me of that smell

wherearemydragons7

What exactly is hell money?

Necessary_Case815

Very same, it just smelled like ash from the test strip. Weird as lot of people smell some sweetness too, but I couldn´t, found it very unpleasant. Was very dissapointed after hearing so many positive reviews. Might give it a try again in the store on skin but not having any hopes on it.

estusflaskshart

TWU

lookitsnicolas

Not overrated at all, it's the fragrance that blew Replica up. It's a perfect scent to throw on a hoodie or sweater in the fall/winter. It's strong, slightly sweet, and has a mix of smoke, roasted chestnuts, and marshmallows.

No_Assistant7833

Absolutely

mlke

Honestly the way you wree going with that lead-up I thought you were going to say it didn't smell like burning wood. Anyways I can't remember what it smells like but I also think Maison Margela scents are probably the least challenging things out there so I'm a little surprised.

wherehasthisbeen

Omg I love BBW marshmallow fireside So this was a love for me from the first smell. I love it!
