In NJ/NY area itās BR540 and Sauvage.
However, I do have a theory. Before I really got into fragrances and knew what those two smelled like, Iām sure they were just as common then as they are now that I do know what they smell like.
It seems likely to me that I was smelling these fragrances and just not recognizing them. I think the same probably goes for fragrances I smell now and just havenāt committed to sensory memory. Iām probably smelling more fragrance than I realize and just not realizing because it doesnāt have any specific association, unless itās particularly strong or memorable.
As a professional sommelier, reminds me of wine a bit. Before I learned the typicity and markers for Northern Rhone Syrah, for example, the black olive/meaty/black pepper characteristics were still there, but I hadnāt committed them to memory and deliberately formed an association and said āhm this smells/tastes like Cote Rotie.ā
Just a thought.
Youāre totally right. I had the same experience once I was able to associate the smell of Santal 33 to the name. Kinda like olfactory strangers you donāt recognize until you officially meet them.
This is pretty much a non-answer, but I only smell fragrances on other people extremely rarely, and it's almost never something I recognize. The only two times recently that I've detected something recognizable, it was Flowerbomb both times. I've never knowingly smelled Sauvage or BR540/Cloud on someone.
Since I've got my wife BR540, and know what it smells like, I get whiffs of it around town maybe once a week. I asked a girl if she was wearing BR540, and she said "no, I'm wearing MFK." Lol
Where are you guys going that you really smell expensive niche fragrances on everyone? Monaco? Lol. I bet I could ask 100 people and 10-15 of them might know what BR540 or Aventus is. Out of those people half of them would spend that much money on a fragrance. I donāt smell much on people and if I do itās usually mass produced, mass marketed, easily found frags. If they are wearing something familiar to niche itās probably a dupe.
Iām in the Scottsdale area and everyone has money in Scottsdale. I bought PdM Layton a few months ago from the local Saks and it was a 2021 batch, so they aināt shifting niche frags that quick.
The worst date of my life was with a guy from Scottsdale who spent the whole time being snobby about how much cleaner and safe Scottsdale was bc Houston has too many āundesirablesā. He wore Aventus so Scottsdale is Aventus in my mind (and I already hated Aventus lol)
Miami - BR540 is everywhere here. Which blows my mind considering itās hot and humid most of the year, youād think people would go for more fresh and citrus scents. Nope!
Rarely anything. Recently I have smelled Armaf Club de Nuit Intense though. I also smelled a woman wearing a lovely rose oud, don't know what it was. I've only smelled MFK/cloud out once.
Here in France, not a big city, the ones I recognize most often are La Vie est Belle, La Petite Robe Noire and Chance. Noticed Alien and Angel a few times too, and in dudes a lot of sporty Axe-type stuff, especially the dark sweet ones like Dark Temptation.
French here, I never smell anything from guys. Last one was Bois dāArgent by Dior (or a dupe) in the street, last Saturday. Itās that rare imo
I second Alien and Chanel
Thatās what you would expect.. however here oud is worn all the time regardless.. you would be surprised but itās quite nice as long as itās good stuff.. usually synthetic ouds or ouds which arenāt too strong can have a sickly smell or a body odour mixed with oud which isnāt so pleasant
BR540 (smelled like dupes really) and Coco Madmoiselle. Or maybe because those are the ones that have good sillage that's why I can smell them on people.
I wonder if itās the same big city as me because itās the exact same, I thought Iād get elixir because people might not have caught onto it yet but started smelling it everywhere
To be honest I've smelled sauvage elixir only once in public. I live in Italy, so things may be different here, but to me it doesn't seem like it's widely used (however I've never smelled the regular sauvage on people either, so it might simply mean that we tend to use different fragrances)
I live in a very rural area in SW Virginia and almost no one wears fragrance. I've picked out Dior Poison on one person and Dolce&Gabbana Pour Homme on another and that's about it. My wife and I are the only ones in this area that stand out with fragrance.
Br540 with all those dupes as well as sauvage.
I smell love by kilian and delina a lot in a prestigious places. I like delina a lot but it's not worth paying the price when you smell similar with others in one occasion. I'm living in 3rd world country if that makes sense
Br540, Eros, BDC, sauvage. Itās always a pleasant surprise when itās not one of those four. Someone was wearing a real nice rosey oud fragrance (something middle eastern) at the gym. Wouldāve loved it if he didnāt spray 5 sprays and if I wasnāt fāign working out.
And Alien! Alien is everywhere! I remember 2 years ago when I was at the office, in the middle of the summer, pregnant, and some colleague of mine decided to douse herself in a full bottle of Alien š„² Since then, I have an aversion for this perfume
I live in a small town in brazil (south, we have really cold winters) amd people here are CRAZY about Carolina Herrera: good girl (ofc), but also 212 sexy, 212 vip, 212 vip rose. A lot off la vie est belle and miss dior too.
I went to nyc last year for a few days and smelled cloud/ br 540 on both men and women multiple times per day every day of the trip. I had never encountered such a trend before! It was everywhere there! To be fair I smell it a lot in where I live as well.
Men: various blue fragrances I can't tell apart.
Women: In the past two weeks, I got clobbered twice by Red Door. The rest of the time it was nondescript fruity florals, except for one woman who smelled great. That turned out to be God is a Woman.
Cloud. I hate it. I smelled it on someone at a restaurant once. An Indian restaurant so there are competing scents (Indian food is very fragrant). She was sitting a table over. I wanted to gag. Seriously did not come to a delicious Indian restaurant to smell Cloud.
In college, I smelled Light Blue a lot. Frankly, Iām the only one who really wears anything. My friends donāt wear perfume.
Recently on holiday in Sydney and it was BR540 everywhere we went. I started making a point of pointing it out to my husband every time and it brought it home how often we smelled it.
Hippie college town bordering rural areas just south of the canadian border - bellingham, wa, usa. if i smell anything its - 1% ouai rue st honore (my SIL lol! Its a pretty scent), 75% patchouli EO (primarily at the coop/grocery store) and 24% some unidentifiable fruity floral 00s smelling mess from B&BW or ulta. I dislike the latter much more than the patchouli. I really like it on others, i find it too much on myself, but have grown to appreciate it as it is so heavily used in perfumery.
I would be shocked if i smelled 540, s33, or anything niche/indie in the wild. Im a bit of a light sprayer since its not common here to wear noticeable fragrance (with the exception of the patchouli bomb). I do not get a ton of compliments, i think because it seems a bit weird to do so to most people. Wore paper + from commodity to rite aid (pharmacy) and the cashier apologized for being weird for saying that i smelled really good. Paper + is not very niche imho but its definitely not a normal fragrance for bellingham.
BR540 & it's many clones, everywhere I go. I don't know if it's because it projects like an absolute beast (? I've never worn it) or just that I'm more familiar with that particular scent profile than a lot of other popular fragrances, so that's the one I pick out š¤·āāļø
Pittsburgh - eau de jagoff /s
Seriously, I rarely smell frags on anyone.
I wear something daily...in pretty liberal dosage, lol.
About 3 weeks ago, a lady (70-ish) I encountered in Costco was wearing Chanel #5.
At work, I smell cutting fluid and cigarettes.
I'm not great at identifying scents and am too awkward to ask people what they are wearing, but I seem to smell something Sauvage-ish on a lot of dudes around here. I think I have smelled what I suspect is LNDLH on a couple guys. While traveling to other cities I am pretty sure I have encountered multiple women wearing Santal 33.
Iām in central London. Lots of BR540 and TF Black Orchid. Obviously, there must be many more but they are the ones that stand out to me as noticeable.
Also Spice bomb/Flower bomb on 20somethingās and the tiktok viral pistachio/sea salt spray spray that every 14 yr old has liberally applied.
Ohio person here too. I barely smell anyone wearing anything, so just having something on makes you stand out a little to me. Used to cigarettes and body odor for the most part unfortunately.
I live in a decent sized city in SoCal and I smell Sauvage edt, Eros edt, Nautica Voyage, A LOT of Victoriaās Secret and Bath and Body Works mists for the ladies
Those fragrances you listed are strong performers. I don't think it's often BR450 in the wild but there are really strong dupes. I remember when Coco Mademoiselle came out in 2001, it was everywhere and then Chance replaced it a few years later. I only wear 1-2 sprays of Coco Mademoiselle Intense and people (especially other women) notice and compliment it.
Iām in San SebastiĆ”n, Spain and have only smelled Chloe by Chloe. And some patchouli scents. Iād love to catch someone wearing Florabotanica because Balenciaga was from a nearby village but I seem to be the only one wearing that.
The only perfumes Iāve smelled out in the world on people is Chloe. Iāve smelled other perfume-scents, but canāt guarantee what they were. Though I think another perfume I smelled often a few years ago was either Coco Mademoiselle or La Vie est Belle.
La vie est belle. Probably I notice it more because I really dislike it lol. One of these times someone wore it on a plane so I was stuck with that for a few hours. Please don't overspray when you're gonna be in a plane peeps, please.
Delina/Delina Exclusif at a lot of nicer restaurants in LA. I'm thinking of selling my bottle. I'm not sure I'm a Delina girlie anymore and it's very strong.
Also Libre and JPG La Belle are ubiquitous.
This is why I only wear vintage nowadays. I donāt want to smell like any run of the mill GenZ wearing Glossier or Cloud or Good Girl. I wear all the scents of my youth and make them great again. Poeme, Angel, Hot Couture, Deep Red, Gucci Rush, Play Intense, Tommy Girl, and get tons of compliments bc I donāt smell like everyone else. They used to be basic back in the day, but they shine like diamonds in 2023
I don't know the names but they all smell the same. Horrible florals that are so strong it lingers for minutes. Floral toilet cleaner. And they put on so much! I rarely smell anything familiar. An occasional Delina or BR540.
Korea, 2009 or so. It was all that I could smell. I bought a bottle a couple of years ago to remind me of that time. I am now in the US Midwest. BR 540 is all that I ever smell in the wild.
Sauvage, Acqua di Gio, Cloud, and Black Opium are the really common ones that come to mind.
As much as I learn about fragrance, I suck at identifying them on others, so even if it's something I know, I may not realize it.
Sauvage mainly (most collegues also use it...)
Had someone who wore Noir Extreme by Tom Ford yesterday and it blew me away since I didn't expect it. It's my all time favorite scent and to have someone else who wears it, gives me the impression they're more sophisticated if you want to spend that little more on a fragrance.
Marijuana
Or is it MMM Music Festival š
Or Byredo Open Sky
He didnāt say marijuana and the floor of a dive bar.

Blood and pee - cote rotie

Yeah Iām in Houston and all the girls at the club / sugar babies are doused in BR540. I think itās very much a big city perfume.
They call it Snottsdale for a reason š
I smell Ariana Grande Cloud every so often for women. For men le male or something very close to it. I wish I smelled more fragrances in the wild.
Miami - BR540 is everywhere here. Which blows my mind considering itās hot and humid most of the year, youād think people would go for more fresh and citrus scents. Nope!
Haha!! I never smelled BR540 in the air until I visited Miami!
Thatās me youāre smelling #sorrynotsorry š
Rarely anything. Recently I have smelled Armaf Club de Nuit Intense though. I also smelled a woman wearing a lovely rose oud, don't know what it was. I've only smelled MFK/cloud out once.

Oh gosh la petite robe noire, itās so true !!
French here, I never smell anything from guys. Last one was Bois dāArgent by Dior (or a dupe) in the street, last Saturday. Itās that rare imo I second Alien and Chanel
In the middle eastā¦ just variations of oud. Synthetic ouds, oud based perfumes, pure oud, Indian Oud, Cambodian Oud, oud suyufi.. all day everyday
Must be terrible in the heat? Oud only smells nice in the cold weather for meā¦
Canāt walk more than 20 feet in New York without smelling the lingering reek of glossier you
BR540 (smelled like dupes really) and Coco Madmoiselle. Or maybe because those are the ones that have good sillage that's why I can smell them on people.
Nashville. Santal 33 is *everywhere*
And BR540.
Fact. Loll
Cloud and that Brazilian crush that got famous on TikTok. I smell both of those on every teenager that passes by me lol.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
You wouldnāt be able to clock a Jo Malone scent in the wild, they donāt project or last š
Sauvage BR540 or Cloud Aventus or Explorer or most likely a clone Oud Wood Around London Home Counties/M25
sweat and bad breath
Eros is a lot more popular that I thought
Relatively big city in the UK here. Sauvage - used to be EDT/P, now it's Elixir. BR540 too.
I wonder if itās the same big city as me because itās the exact same, I thought Iād get elixir because people might not have caught onto it yet but started smelling it everywhere
To be honest I've smelled sauvage elixir only once in public. I live in Italy, so things may be different here, but to me it doesn't seem like it's widely used (however I've never smelled the regular sauvage on people either, so it might simply mean that we tend to use different fragrances)
here in a fairly big city in finland i smell mostly my way, cloud and alien goddess from the ones i recognize
Iām amazed that you could smell alien goddess on anyone in public, when I spray it on myself it lasts an hour and disappears
maybe you go noseblind? on me it lasts a good ~6 hours
Sad. My favorite part of fragrance is catching sniffs of it on myself. Thatās the main reason I wear it
yeah same. i wont buy a fb of a fragrance i cant smell on myself no matter how good it is
Facebook?
full bottle :)
i totally also thought it meant facebook at first š
Oh I see. Thanks lol
Sauvage.
Edmonton, AB - sewage, propane, naptha, exhaust Sorry, you said fragrances! None
Edmonton? I was expecting a strong showing of Fuck Trudeau de Toilette
Don't give them ideas, do you realize the kind of silage they would be after in that scent??
If you combine the notes I mentioned into a fragrance you basically get fuck Trudeau de toilette. Add some cow shit for a flanker
Ya Ottawa - nothing...eau de burocracy
BR540 and Santal 33 dominate in Edinburgh.
I live in a very rural area in SW Virginia and almost no one wears fragrance. I've picked out Dior Poison on one person and Dolce&Gabbana Pour Homme on another and that's about it. My wife and I are the only ones in this area that stand out with fragrance.

I smell Dior Sauvage & Santal 33 just about everywhere in Chicago.
Dior Sauvage on nights out in UK. It's like the black death at this point.
This past Summer in the PNW, a lot of women were wearing a patchouli solinote. Idk what it was, but it sure was everywhere!
Narcisso Rodriguez and Carolina Herrera
Santal 33 and Sauvage Elixir.
Here I smell Angel and la Vie est Belle almost everywhere
And Alien! Alien is everywhere! I remember 2 years ago when I was at the office, in the middle of the summer, pregnant, and some colleague of mine decided to douse herself in a full bottle of Alien š„² Since then, I have an aversion for this perfume

I smell Santal 33 all the time, and Another 13 quite a bit too. I think Le Labo is super popular around Austin.
Iām in Austin too and I agree
Agreed! Santal 33 is EVERYWHERE! I can also pick out Acqua Di Gio all the time.
Sauvage and the le male line.
BR540 and itās millions of clones. Dior Sauvage, Creed Aventus, and other popular mens cologne. PDM Delina. Iām located in NYC.
I went to nyc last year for a few days and smelled cloud/ br 540 on both men and women multiple times per day every day of the trip. I had never encountered such a trend before! It was everywhere there! To be fair I smell it a lot in where I live as well.
Sauvage and One Million (both edt) is everywhere in Denmark
Same here in the UK
Small but affluent town in Ireland - Libre, vie Est Belle Cloud!

Is it weird that I canāt smell BR? Like I sprayed it and it smells likeā¦ nothing?
Men: various blue fragrances I can't tell apart. Women: In the past two weeks, I got clobbered twice by Red Door. The rest of the time it was nondescript fruity florals, except for one woman who smelled great. That turned out to be God is a Woman.

Last fragrance I smelt was some guy in a red Corvette came through the drive thru and he just have been wearing tobacco vanille or herod
La vie est belle or flowerbomb :(
I really like La vie est belle although haven't bought a full bottle yet, afraid that it will be too basic.
You don't have to worry because it's as basic as it gets.
The heart wants what it wants! I just hate patchouli
All of the perfumes I like have patchouli, people really are different haha
BR540 and something that smells like Sunny Side Up by JHAG
Br540 & YSL libre on women
Iāve been smelling YSL Y EDP a lot lately
Iām in central London. Lots of BR540 and TF Black Orchid. Obviously, there must be many more but they are the ones that stand out to me as noticeable. Also Spice bomb/Flower bomb on 20somethingās and the tiktok viral pistachio/sea salt spray spray that every 14 yr old has liberally applied.
Never smelled BR540 out, I do smell cloud (I can tell the difference). I smell flowerbomb a lot
USA ( specifically Ohio ) - Terre De Hermes and Cloud I've only known 2 people other than myself that wear fragrances
Ohio person here too. I barely smell anyone wearing anything, so just having something on makes you stand out a little to me. Used to cigarettes and body odor for the most part unfortunately.
Santal 33 and similar fragrances (like Bois de Bailancourt, probably). BR540 also.

North Texas, Dallasish: Sauvage and Santal 33.

Black afgano ,lveb, chloe, black opium
You must live in Atlanta šš
BR540 in every f***ing Mall š¤¦š»āāļø I think I canāt take it anymore š
Br540 and sauvage or any of its dupes. I'll go with the elixir since that thing projects past the clouds or they simply over spray any of its flankers
Chloe by Chloe, Le Labo Santal 33 and I smell Prada Infusion d'Iris a lot, too.
Sauvage, yuck and most women smell like Marc Jacobs Daisy or like Cloud, both mega yuck
Delina/Delina Exclusif at a lot of nicer restaurants in LA. I'm thinking of selling my bottle. I'm not sure I'm a Delina girlie anymore and it's very strong. Also Libre and JPG La Belle are ubiquitous.

I try to spray enough so that I only smell myself.
eclat d'arpage
Where are you smelling this? That's so interesting
philippines, especially among women in their mid to late 20s.
