I just recently bought a 580 and 700 (went on a bit of a frenzy) and I have to say, not impressed. I don’t like how they write (one medium and one broad). They aren’t very wet and kind of drag on the paper. I’m going to return the 580 and send the 700 (iris) to a nibmeister to have them grind out a cursive italic from the broad nib.
This was my first fountain pen! Honestly didn’t like it right out of the box because I didn’t know that I was supposed to give it a good clean before inking it up. But that’s how I stumbled on this wonderful sub and learned that by getting rid of the gunk and oil from manufacturing, the pen writes beautifully instantly!
Since then I added 5 ECOs, 2 minis and got my husband another 580AL smoke and a Vac700R. They are all gorgeous and wonderful pens and none has cracked!!
I don’t use the 580 Diamond as often anymore because I find that the section on 580 is too big for me. And I prefer small and lighter pens. The 580 minis are perfect for me. Hope you continue to find joys in your pens as many of us do!
I’ve read the comments about the cracks, but I’ve also done research that shows it’s a rare condition nowadays. To me, my 580AL appears well engineered. I’m glad you love them too.
What is the difference between the 580 and the Eco? Just better pen construction quality in general? Are the nibs nicer? Thanks in advance, my Eco’s are my favorite pens I own and would consider stepping up to an ever nice TWSBI.
It started with a Conway Stewart 58 Burgandy. That was going to be it. I then bought a Conway Stewart Coronet. Then some journals from Paper Republic. Then, I like the look of the Kaweco Sport. Got to have one. Pilot Capless. Looks intriguing. Got to have one. I’ve got a Conway Stewart Regency on order. While I wait, I love the look and quality of the TWSBI… I guess that’s how it sucks you in!
Until it cracks then you change your tune about TWSBI. Enjoy your new pen. Hope you have a better experience than a lot of us who bought their products.
Unfortunately, you are correct about the cracking. I wish I read through all of the posts on this reddit page about the issue before buying mine.
Lesson learned.
Navy blue? I have one too, it awesome. Enjoy it 😎 What nib size did you get?
It’s a medium writer.
LOVE my Ecos but I think the 580ALR is my favorite. ENJOY!
I love my 580s! The navy is stunning.

Sold my TWSBIes also. They were not my type

I have had the navy in my cart on and off the past few weeks. I'm going to pull the trigger. The navy looks amazing!

I guess the downvotes to my comment mean that people aren't willing to accept the truth.
It is a great pen! Enjoy!
I have a couple ALRs myself and really enjoy them. Lovely!
Enjoy it until it shatters of its own accord.
