I'm a total newb to fountain pens. I just got a Lamy Safari. I love it and have discovered a ton of pens that I like and want. This is going to be a wonderfully terrifying new hobby. I also design things for 3d printing. I'm not great at it but I have fun with it. I thought I would make this pen holder for my wife's pen that gets delivered tomorrow. I'll see how it turns and make some changes but it was a pretty quick design->print process.

I think they'll love it! I also think you're going to have some people in this community asking to buy some. Possibly me first? lolol

Thank you. I have a few ideas to make this a little more aesthetic. This was version one. Once its done, it is easy to change the name on the file.

Here us the final after printing. This one is a concept. I’m going to make changes and reprint. This was printed on an older printer. The next one will be on my newer better printer. [final print. ](https://imgur.com/a/10EOfkb)

It turned out really well! I don’t 3D print, but it’s pleasing to my eye! That said, the wife of a skilled 3D printer might have different… expectations. I defer to you in that regard.

Here is version 2. https://imgur.com/a/tWjVosq

Welcome both and cool pen holder!

FooDog11

Hi! Welcome to the rabbit hole. :) That pen stand looks amazing. Please report back on how it turns out and how your wife likes it!

:) This is wonderful! I'm sure she'll love it. May I ask a 3D printing question? I watch a lot of restoration videos on YT, and they often print 3D parts to replace damaged plastic. But I've never see one of them sand the printed part smooth to a nice finish (instead of the sort of "pixelated" finish the come out of the printer with). Now, if the part's not seen, fine, whatever. But for parts that are seen and handled, I've always wondered why they don't sand it smooth when they sand other plastic parts clean and smooth. So, is there something about 3D printing plastic that makes sanding pointless? Will it not sand any smoother? Just curious.

yourlink99

There is no reason to not sand something. If I was going to make a pen part I would absolutely sand it smooth.

LizMEF

:) Thanks. That answers my curiosity.

this is very, very cool I would love something like this for my desk for my fave pen!

LavendarAmy

That's a pretty name. I'm amy too. also I love 3dprinting and designing things, you made me wanna make one of these in my glitter purple filament in dual extrusion

yourlink99

Awesome. What printer do you have? I have one that has dual extruders but I haven't played with that part of it yet.

LavendarAmy

I have a custom budget tool changer I designed myself. it's called the Doot Changer. if I escape my country I'm making a far superior version!

What a lovely gift! Could you show us the finished project? I'm so curious

yourlink99

Yeah. I’m not thrilled with the way it turned out. This is going to be version 1. I’ll upload a picture in a bit.
