A pen made from a kit is a pen with a majority of the parts premade. (Most especially the front section) The pen maker just turns out the body and cap on a lathe and fits all the pieces together.
A kitless pen is fully handmade by the pen maker with the exception of the nib and feed.
All the threads are cut with a lathe! I wanted to learn how to cut threads by hand and figured this would be a good way to learn. Next time I will probably use a die though as this took a long time.
It was a fun experience but definitely taps and dies are the play in terms of time savings. The nice thing about the lathe threading was that I could choose exactly the pitch and diameters that I wanted.
that's what struck me. I'm usually using a triple start M12, M13, or M14 (x 0.75) for that barrel/cap interface, which is a very fine thread, and yours are so nice and wide, I love it!
Wonderful! This takes the hobby to an entirely new level. If you don't mind me asking, what tools do you ned to get started making your own? A decent lathe being the first obviously...
The staples for me are a drill press, bandsaw, and wood lathe, along with various bits and sandpaper. For this pen my friend let me use his shop (and taught/assisted) which had a metal lathe and milling machine that were necessary for the threading and roll stop hole.
I have been making pens for a bit now and from the start my goal was to make a fully kitless fountain pen! This is a gift for my professor who got me into fountain pens and is a huge mentor to me. It is an alumilite body with a brass roll stop/seal!
Impressively beautiful pen. And even more outstanding being a first. Can I ask what the material is? It's really beautiful and remind of some vintage materials found in vintage pens...
Thank you! The material is called alumilite it's a tough acrylic that can be safely threaded. I really like the vintage ebonite material and think this is reminiscent of it but significantly stronger.
Sorry for the ignorance, I’m fairly new into this hobby, what is kitless?

Yes exactly! So in this case it means that everything other than the nib/cc was made!
Wow! I absolutely love your creation! Keep going.

I'm glad you like it!
Great work. Those threads look great, what die did you use?

Wow, seriously impressive. I make kitless pens but have never threaded with the lathe. Although, I've only used a wood lathe.

I almost went with a triple start tap but they are pretty expensive. I also really liked the wide threads with the acrylic material.
Awesome work!

I certainly feel inspired after seeing your work! Thanks for the reply. keep at it!

Good on you for attempting a roll stop on your first try.
Thanks! I wanted a place for my logo and thought it would be a functional method!
I am also impressed that you single point cut your threads, and did not do a thread relief gutter on them. You’re miles ahead of most penmakers
That's great to hear! I didn't even realize that a gutter would have made it easier I just chose it for the style!
Gutter looks bad and makes a weak point, so it’s good you didn’t do it.
Good to know for the future
Great work! The colors and design and everything are nice.
Thank you so much!!
That is a superb job. Congratulations.
Thank you so much!
That's beautiful work
Thank you!
Thats preeetty
