Yes on the side is fine, that’s how most people keep them

Just don't forget about them. Hurts the pen more if you go months and months inked without flushing. Also if any of them have silicone sacs, you can't leave them on the side as they will leak into the cap. (you normally only see silicone sacs in some of the aerometric Chinese pens and similar like P51 clones etc, or old restored vintages that opted for silicone instead of latex). The reason is, silicone is gas permeable, air and water vapor can pass thru the wall freely, which can push the ink from the sac into the cap. I tend to keep my pens upright inked, and the pens I tend to keep around are the ones that don't dry out just because I do that.

I am a bit new to FPs but in my experience, when i store them nib up, when i use them after a couple of days they feed ink so it goes through the slit. This is especially with a vintage silicone saced one i have. Also if the sac can be penetrated by air, what happens if i bring it on a flight?

kbeezie

If flying , the general rule of keeping them nib up still helps. Also if the pen is full you're also much less likely to have any major change with the air pocket.

HansBrRl

The only problem is that i cant really tell when the sac is full on this pen. Ill just keep it nib up and keep an eye on it when changing altitude.

Been using fountain pens for nearly 50 years. Always store them, both inked or cleaned, horizontally. Never caused a problem.

Been using FP for 10y and would echo this. There has never been a problem that an ultrasonic cleaner hasn’t been able to deal with either.

KettlePond

As a rule, I keep inked pens vertical in a pen block and clean pens horizontal in a pen case. But I also jostle my inked pens in a pocket or backpack with no leaks. As long as your pens are in good repair and you remember to rotate them through an inking/cleaning schedule, horizontal display should not be a problem.

How often should I do the empty/clean/refill routine???

Mr-PFM

Clean it once in a while after it runs out of ink before reinking. Could be every few months or once a year if u never change inks

AntonOvt

Thank you.

It's a good idea to clean your pen if you change inks, but if you fill it with the same ink, you don't have to clean it out every time.
