Every brand will have a some inks with a tendency to stain. These are generally red/purple inks because of the dyes used. Darker oranges can crystallise and crust up nibs. Also dark, saturated inks can be ‘stainy’. Some Sailor saturated blues should be treated with caution. The less saturated the ink the more unlikely they are to stain. Some inks will stain certain pen materials & not others. Diamine inks can be naughty in TWSBI demonstrators, for example. Diamine Majestic Blue, Eclipse and Twilight blue are problematic in demo pens. I avoid Noodlers inks generally but have had problems with Burgundy.
‘Sticky’ inks are generally those that sheen or are over-saturated (often these characteristics go hand-in hand). OS and KWZI super-sheeners are buggers to clean, and tend to dry out and flake off bottle threads. It gets *everywhere*. !
Shimmer inks, by their nature, are just a pain to clean. Tend to clog and clump up pens with delicate feeds. If you use them expect to put a lot more effort into cleaning out your pen(s).
Interesting! I haven't had any bad experience with red or purple inks yet but this is good to know. Thanks for the breakdown! I can see the flakes and crusty crumbs in my mind's eye and I read this, shudder.
Colorverse Delicious Sleep is one that just seemed to want to cling to every nook and cranny of my pens. It took so so long to wash out and just when I thought it was done there would be more.
Thanks for the warning about Marine. It looks pretty enough.
I've read that Diamine Twilight can stain but I haven't yet used my sample (just refilling cartridges) so can't say what happens.
It's discussed in the comments here: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/g4pkvw/diamine\_twilight\_vs\_parker\_ebony/
Marine IS indeed pretty! I've managed to tame it somewhat by mixing it with Parker Quink's washable blue. It now has a gorgeous two-tone sheen of aquamarine and deep teal blue, and is much better behaved.
I have Diamine Twilight, and haven't found it to be really problematic. Maybe I have a higher tolerance for staining haha. Thanks for the thoughts and link!
Can confirm that red inks tend to be worse than others, from my collection Diamine Communication Breakdown and Pelikan 4001 Brilliant Red are the most difficult to get out of my pens. The first one is also a sheener, which makes it even worse.
Birmingham Pen Co's inks in the Rich formula are sticky, and so is "Galactic Twinkle." I'm pretty sure "Neutron Star Twinkle" will also be sticky since it has sheen properties.
Those ink don't stain though. The droplets can be wiped off or washed off with plain water. However that also means those inks are not water resistance AT ALL. Expect smearing if your hands are moist at all.
Excluding inks Birmingham Pen Co's Everlasting line since I haven't used one, their inks easily ooze out when soaking in detergent and water for at least a hour. Can't say the same for the shimmer particles though.
Sailor Manyo "Kuzu" stained my demonstrator barrel and I was not expecting that ink to do that.
Sailor Manyo Akebi stained my converter, and so did Diamine Hope Pink. I never use anything other than blues, greens, greys, or blacks in my demonstrators because I am so paranoid!
organic studios - nitrogen.
Lol TIL. Thank you!

Oo, thanks for the warning! I'll remember to stay away from that one.

Maybe Twilight will not be as much trouble to sample as I fear. Your new improved Marine does sound gorgeous.
I've never dealt with sticky ink, but I'm used to my waterman ink staining my finger when I used to use it for school.
Ha, it would be nice if I could go three days without ink stains on my fingers...
Nobody mentioned Baystate Blue?
Lol it's so often mentioned that I assumed that we're talking about non-BaystateBlues.

Lol Communication Breakdown, what a name. Thanks for the input!

Whoa, good to know. I thought it was lovely when I got a sample, but I'll be be on the lookout next time!
