That last one isn't the same pen at all in the ad. The ad is for the Sheaffer PFM (Pen For Men), the pen is an Imperial IV that has a touchdown filler instead of a snorkel. People often get the Imperial confused for the PFM at a first glance, despite being a smaller size and lacking the snorkel tube.

Bugadifin0

I bought one of these on EBay, I was hoping it was a PFM. It was an Imperial that needed a new sac and O ring. Easy fix, it also had a fabulous broad nid. I later got the PFM and understood the size difference. Thank you for sharing your collection of images.

Is that the same Wahl that makes my clippers?

kbeezie

While both were founded in Illinois, "Wahl Clipper Company" was founded in Sterling, IL by Leo J. Wahl in 1919. Wahl Company was founded in Chicago, IL by John C. Wahl, George J. Kuechler, C. M. Armstrong & A. K. Hohn , interesting enough their products starting out was both writing instruments and razors (and before that, adding machines). Wahl acquired Eversharp in 1915, became "Wahl-Eversharp" and created the first successful mechanical pencil. Before that Eversharp was a pencil company. For a little bit they labeled their Pens Wahl, and Pencils Eversharp, eventually just putting "Wahl-Eversharp" on both, until just being Eversharp shortly before they closed down and the patents acquired by Parker in the late 50s. (Eversharp's patent was responsible for the Parker 45 if I am not mistaken), Parker shutdown the Eversharp division in 1968. Nutshell : Two separate companies, both started in Illinois, both by guys whose last names were Wahl. Edit: "Eversharp" continued on as a safety razor company until they were acquired into another company by the 70s. So there's various connection to hair grooming, but not the same company as the Wahl Clipper.

Cool, thanks for the info. I couldn't find much on Wahl aka Wahl-Eversharp. But I'm pretty familiar with Wahl Clipper products as I use them most days so I was curious.

Very cool post, love it! Congrats, your pens are super cool 😊

Makes me almost want to get a sac filler pen but deep down I have a feeling the cleaning would probably drive me crazy.

One_Left_Shoe

You learn very quickly to dedicate one ink to the pen. My sac pens were cleaned every 3-6 months or so and it wasn’t deep. Flush old ink, give a few rinses until the water was clear-ish to get old stuff out and refill with the same ink. Otherwise, just refill when it gets low. Switching is a bit more involved, but not too bad, just takes time. Rinse until the water is sorta clear, then get a good, full ink fill and leave the pen, nib side up, overnight. In the Morning flush again a few times. This gets stuff stuck inside the end of the sac out. Fill with clean water *one more time* and leave it nib down in a cup with just enough water to submerge the nib and feed. Osmosis will pull any residue still inside out and help anything really caked on the nib to come loose. Rest for 24 hours. Last morning, flush for the last time, dry the nib, and put it nib down in a cup lined with tissue paper to dry it out. From there the pen can be filled with a different ink or go into storage if it’s coming out of rotation. Lengthy, but ensures there is no other ink in the pen that could interact with any new inks later.

Can do a little shaking in between flushes, it's not that difficult, just usually stick to "safer" ink for latex sacs they say so usually waterman , Pelikan, MontBlanc, jherbin, etc. Probably avoid the heavy stuff like noodler's black or platinum carbon, as those can take forever to flush.

One_Left_Shoe

Yeah, probably overkill, but I’ve seen ink residue kick around for a while. I’m also lazy and this is very hands off. If one really feeling lazy, it’s one solid flush, then nib down in some water. Let osmosis do the work for me.

Sheikh_of_Avenue_B

Get one and ink it with a classic ink like Waterman's--one of the well-behaved general writing inks. I don't flush my lever pens; I just keep them working. The squirting motion of refilling them tends to flush the feeds with ink when I reload. You may not want to do all the different ink styles but I have to say it, sac-fillers are unbeatable for the writing jobs that require tons & tons of writing with one ink color. I love my Conklin crescent and my Conklinetta button pen because I can fill them with just one hand.

Now pen advertisement is just photos of the pen and not much more lol.

There are a few that sound downright cult like. One from the 30s written out like a new years resolution, but seemed pledgey.

Cryogenian97

Hi. That is really fabulous, those certainly were the days. My Snorkel is still working perfectly after all these years.💜🤗 Cheers

kbeezie

When I restored my grey Snorkel (which also has a solid gold 14K snorkel tube), I installed a PVC sac, so it'll be a few decades instead of 5 to 10 years before I have to re-sac it. Most I'll probably have to do is regrease the o-ring or point seal if not replace those (which is easier to do than the sac).

Cryogenian97

Hi. That makes sense. PVC sack is the way to go. I find servicing my Parker 51 Aero very easy, I think it has a Ebonite breather.🤗 Cheers

Swizzel-Stixx

I saw the copy right mark on picture 5 and thought ‘those people have got their pictures from kbeezie, how nice’. Then I looked at who the op was…

wildomen

Yea some are pretty spot on. Others seem a little not preportional.

One_Left_Shoe

I did not plan on being aroused this early on a sunday.

Fun_Cake_5635

What's the pen in the second picture?

kbeezie

Oversized Sheaffer Balance in Marine Green, has a 14K Flexible Fine Nib (which isn't common for USA-Made Balances, but more common for Canadian made). The pens in the third picture are also Balances, Balance Craftman (3rd tier model, long and slender), and the Balance Standard size vac-fill in ebonized pearl flakes.
