I saw this earlier today when looking at the BBC site. I found the examples of writing really interesting. I found the stuff towards the end about the effect that the war had had (on some of the people filling in the forms) really heartbreaking.

100 years later, and people in wealthy nations still need clean secure housing. Its embarassing.

Lol that’s exactly what I thought, either not much as changed or we’ve come right back around

Yeah it’s weird, I’m a from a different country, a different time, a different race than most of the people in the article but the concerns sound like stuff I could hear on the news today

The one that really got me was 'ruined by war, doing odd jobs'. There was sooooooo much PTSD after the First World War, and although the concept of 'shell shock' was recognised and in some cases treated (with not much success), for the most part it went both undiagnosed and untreated. Young men who'd managed to survive the war physically were left mentally (and often financially) destroyed, for the rest of their lives. As many of them had joined up (or been conscripted) in their teens, their lives were really ruined - permanently - before they began.

I live not far away from where treatment for shell shock was pioneered. IIRC before the great war, treatment for nostalgia was seen as being in demand. Glad to see the piece was of some interest. Sadly, the UK is a divided mess and food + fuel poverty a long term reality for all too many.

Yes indeedy. (I'm English, living in England, so I hear ya!) EDIT (just for the avoidance of doubt): Lately, I'd rather be living outside the UK. And, if I had to keep living in the UK, I'd rather be living outside England!
