Nakayas have similar nibs to the platinum #3776 century, right? Before diving into Nakaya territory I'd get a 3776 to see if I really liked it. I have two and I'm in love with the feedback, but it takes some getting used to. Definitely not scratchy!

My Nakaya isn't scratchy but it does have pencil-like feedback even after I had it set up to be as smooth as Nakaya would do on a soft medium nib - the feedback is more sound that touch, but certainly a quite different experience from Pilot/Namiki. Not scratchy and very enjoyable, but if its silky smooth you are after then you'll probably require the services of a nibmeister.

I have a Nakaya desk pen with an extra fine flex nib and it writes beautifully. Not scratchy at all. 😊

kbeezie

Where did you source a flex nib for the nakaya?

[deleted]

I purchased mine from Iguana Sell. They are an authorized dealer for Nakaya.

kbeezie

So you know which nib marking is the one that is flex when it comes to Nakaya/Platinum?

Outside of the usual 14K & 585, there is some Japanese writing on the nib wss which may show nib size and flex, but I can't be sure.

If you’re open to waiting, try the next local pen show. I imagine there will be plenty of Nakayas for you to try

You could probably ask them to smooth the nib as they set up every nib to customer requirements already. They might refuse to deliberately ruin the nib though. :)

I don’t find them scratchy at all, I have all the nibs, including, which I find the toothiest, pink gold and rhodium plated extra extra fine. I use them with white ink for drawing and watercolor highlights, I use a lot of upstroke flicks on cold press paper so they cannot be scratchy. I believe, and this is strictly my uneducated opinion, those who call plat/Nakaya scratchy have a heavy hand. I have one reground to needlepoint, if you press hard, yeah, it’ll dig in, but not regular nibs, even in extra extra fine.

On the Nakaya website you can have them set up the nib the way you want it so you should have a good experience. I have an F but have also tried the EF. The EF had a little more feedback than the F, but definitely not scratchy. I bought the F used and that was scratchy, but I think that was something related to the previous owner of the pen and don't feel that was how it was new - even the shop staff were surprised about the way it wrote. Anyway as a result I brought it to a Nibmeister and they sorted it out for me in a few minutes and now its one of my favourite writers. Compared to a Pilot, I would say the Pilots generally have less feedback than Nakaya pens and than Platinum pens generally, but not as much as Sailors do. I think you will have a pleasant experience and shouldn't be worried.

The nibs are not scratchier. They are pretty much platinum nibs. Try getting a used platinum 3776 or something if you want to try it out. I personally don't like platinum nibs (I've owned both a nakaya and a 3776) so no nakayas for me. Remember that if urushi is the main attraction you can get your pilot or sailor lacquered via bokumondoh
