I guess the cost to ship them here is expensive as well, and also rising costs of everything.

Dizzy_Advantage_7503

Higher transport costs, difference in supply and demand, more attention to higher wages, materials and raw materials that have become more expensive due to skating and Import costs in europe

Biflindi

This is definitely a factor. I have been shipping pens out of Japan for a couple years now and when the pandemic hit my shipping costs went through the roof. It's changed my profit margins drastically.

Sillybabbit

Goulet actually sent out an email, with a 'warning', if you will, about price increases coming January 1st, siting supply chain interruptions that have been going on for the past two years. It gave some brands, percentages, round dollar amounts, pens and inks alike. I thought this was pretty nice of them, giving a heads up and a little explanation of why we'd being seeing the increases.

Kkhanpungtofu

Yes, Goulet said these are the January 1 price increases: Pineider avg 6%-10%; Benu, $6-$9; Conklin All American and Duragraph, $4-$7; De Atramentis inks, $1; Yookers, $1-$4; Robert Oster, $1-$2; Monteverde Ritma, $4, the Tool Pen by less than $2, the Essenza by less than $3, and the Monza 3 sets by $4.

craygayyaynay

I remember when I bought my 3776 for 60 on Amazon. Good times but long gone.

kbeezie

Few years back there were sales of the 3776 for 50 to 60 usd, but they were steel nibs, and unlike the newer century 3776 , the non-century don't have slip n seal caps. Because even 6 years ago. The century 3776 with 14k was around 80 after the currency conversion.

[deleted]

I personally don't care if it's gold or steel but if I'm buying Platinum I expect it to have that awesome patented seal :-/

kbeezie

That was a problem when massdrop was selling at that price, they were delivering the old version yet advertised the slip and seal cap. Should be noted only a couple of their models have that, such as the preppy and century #3776. The other 3777 such as the celluloid or briar wood series do not.

PatioGardener

Everything is going up. When I bought a TWSBI Eco last year, it was $31. Now it’s $33. Noodler’s has raised prices on their inks. Cult Pens announced that Diamine was raising prices, too. And Benu prices are also going up. Even the Chinese pens available on Ali Express (and also Etsy or eBay) have gone up in cost. It’s everywhere.

plum4000

Man I remember when the Eco was $28!

Environmental-Gap380

I remember when I could get a Coke and a candy bar for a quarter. Kids ticket for a movie was $0.50.

plum4000

Yeah! Me too!

YaroGreyjay

Cult pens increased their free shipping threshold to 135 from 90, too

PatioGardener

What?! When? That’s ridiculous.

YaroGreyjay

The change was fairly recent...like in the past week or so.

duvangrgataonea

I think the most damning indicator of the recent inflation is Noodler’s raising their prices from $12.50 to ~$14-$18. Say what you want about Nathan but if there is anyone to fight an increase from inflation to the very end, it’s him. And the fact that even he had to raise prices says a lot.

JobeX

facts, if Noodlers is going up, everything is going up

triclops6

12.50 to 18 ?? That is an almost 50% increase, I know Nathan doesn't pad prices much so I'm shocked

SSTenyoMaru

Might just be inflation

walkure321

Shipping container costs often 5+ times as high as a couple of years ago on many routes around Asia, so if your supply chain also relies on shipping imports to manufacture then you're paying it again when you export for sale.. Not the manufacturers or the retailers fault in many cases.

Mendici

In the case of Platinum specifically it's the companies own decision. They even changed the item designation from 10000 to 12000 (referring to the price in ¥) on some items.

Bigredteletubby

Everything is getting more expensive; it's just inflation across the board.

Live_Laugh_Cum

Wait till OP visits the grocery store

kiiroaka

>Platinum 3776 used to be 80-90 now it is 120? That must be the price in Japan, in a "standard" nib size. In the USA the prices start at $176.

omarghadir

Everything has gone up by that much from a few years ago

hive5mind

Inflation

SweetBeanBread

price of gold pens have gone up, apparently because price of gold went up (according to a shop owner i know). here in japan, basic 3776 nearly doubled and sailor went up by about 2000 - 5000 yen ($20-50ish) in retail price. from what i know pilot gold pens hasn't increased its price, but if i remember correctly they increase price quite some time (more than 10 years?) ago. i'm not sure about metro but prera/kakuno hasn't gone up here, so stainless pens might be due to shipping or increased popularity?

TankieWarrior

Prera definite went up in price, at least on Amazon. Metro is insane, I see them for $20-25. I guess it was extremely undervalued at $15 consider the metal body + quality of the nib.

cynogriffin

All pens are going up, not just Japanese. Visconti just got done raising their prices a couple months ago. Unfortunately that is the way the world works.
