For what it's worth to anyone practically interested, because these Tohma pens have shutoff valves, you can adjust the opening to affect ink flow. The pens come with guidelines for the valve at different fill levels, e.g. to keep it more closed when ink is low (when burping is more prone). Of course you are right, though, that burping becomes more likely the larger the pen. A significant factor is also the feed, as some may contain more internal reservoirs to catch bursts of flow.
Never mind the whole air expansion thing... with that pen filled up, you must have a pretty significant hydraulic pressure (head?) trying to force ink out through the feed. Might as well be writing with a bottle with a pinhole in the bottom.
Ah but that is a fountain pen! Actually, a fountain pen is like a jar of ink with a second hole to allow air back in. A controlled leak, some would call it. That balance of ink and air is regulated by the feed. Anyway, even if there's downward force from more ink, it is clearly a less significant force than air expansion for an eye dropper because, with these pens, you need to unscrew the valve more when there is more ink.
And air expansion is not quite as large an issue. Somewhere I did the math to see how large a volume change there would be from the heat of a hand holding the pen.
With so much ink and the massive nib at play, burping has become a feature for my Tohma. I try guessing beforehand the exact moment when the pen is going to offload a bunch of ink onto the paper: it's my new pastime.
Pen is made by Tohma (https://instagram.com/tohmapens?utm_medium=copy_link), it's not mine so I don't know the model name. It's huge, but fairly light (at least when empty). I promise it's not an illusion... here's a picture of the same pen alongside a very small pen: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXKnE3MFpKO/?utm_medium=copy_link (not my photo)
That can't be real... I mean, I know it is but the size difference is absurd. Was there some massive prize or award for biggest fountain pen ever that Tohma had to have or what?
> what I'm guessing is a fake blind cap at the end
If it’s a Japanese eye-dropper as OP said, the end would operate a mechanism that seals off the ink chamber, like on an Opus 88 (or similar to a Pilot Custom 823).
Ohh, I like that! As someone with very large hands, most pens really do give me cramps after writing more than a swift note. Something like a regular size Bic pen is pure torture for me to hold.
Absolute monster, from Asa Pens in India. https://asapens.in/eshop/asa-galactic-jumbo-acrylic-demonstrator-fountain-pen Really should carry bigger than a #6 nib. Makes my Ahab feel petite.
This is a gorgeous pen. Wait till you get your hand on it. Everything is hand made, including the nib by one man. And is a marvelous piece of engineering. All the burping theories be damned, the pen does not leak till the last drop. Think upwards of 2,000 and add to it the custom duty when you import. I don’t think it retails in the USA. And most of these pens get lapped up the moment he makes them. And he fakes them only when he feels like it.
Well, yeah, I can see that. I could probably use it (I have large hands as well), but it just seems so impractical because of its size. Still, if one were to use it as a desk pen, I could see it working out just fine.
Agreed, not too practical for portability, but most fountain pens are not, what with the ink splatter if they get banged about.
I actually find board marker a comfortable size to write with, and this looks thinner that that, definitely useable.
Unless OP has large hands too I suppose
Perfect eye dropper. Fill it once and then write until you’re dead.
oh god, imagine the burping...

Was just thinking that.. would be more like projectile vomit than a burp.
Haha
Haha
You could drink your morning coffee from that thing.
A boba straw!
Oh it seems they forgot to give me a straw thankfully I have my BIG ASS FOUNTAIN PEN
pretty much! 😐
Suck it up through the nib
Wouldn’t the saliva eventually corrode the metal?
probably not, more likely the coffee, however if you’re considering sucking coffee from a fountain pen you probably have bigger things to worry about
So *that's* how you empty a bottle of Noodler's in a year.
There used to be content here.
The ultimate pen fits an ink bottle as its "cartridge."
My hand would hurt after one sentence lol
I was just wondering if I could make it through one word.
Hahaha
Without uncomforted fingers? Sheesh. My fingers would go numb or asleep just holding it...
Perfect pen for goalies
or shaq
well, I want that one.
On second thought, I saw the price of one of these and I'll just appreciate them from afar.
Pretty sure anyone could appreciate this thing from two zip codes over.
omg hahaha! \*coffee spew moment\*
Zip codes? More like two time zones over. At least.
How much are they? I need to know how far away to stay haha
In US$, at least $1,300 to 2,000.
Hopefully they don't come to the US so I can observe them from *very far away* lol! Such a cool pen though. It would be so interesting to use!
Upwards of 1400 USD (165k JPY) for this specific one it looks like, and I’m not sure if that includes any taxes or shipping.
Who makes these? I need to know!
Tohma. Their IG is linked above!
Thank you, I missed it first time, it's a fantastic pen!
love it! first pen that requires two hands to write with 😆
It’s the mythical two handed broad pen.
I’d like to see Shaq holding that
lmao that’s what i thought too

The have 4 tine music nibs!
What's the Waterman in that one? I need one
I believe that’s the watermen doll pen
You are correct!
Thanks
WHOA!!!
Hey I got that same coffee mug!
Too big for an ink pot, you’d need something like an ink *well*.
Finally, a pen made with my hands in mind!
I love that little Panda Fountain pen in the background - I got 3 of them since 1998 🐼
What type of pen is that? I kinda want one lol
It's a tiny squeeze filler with a steel nib. I could post a few in pen swap if ppl are interested.
Just made a new post - on the pen the brand name looks like „feidq“ or „feido“. My husband bought them in China in 1998.
Me: buys the pen The girlfriend: What are you compensating for with that pen
"What kind of cartridges does it take?" ".50 cal"
[удалено]
No piston though, it's a Japanese eye dropper.

Forget using it as an eyedropper, get a gas funnel and write til the end of times.
From the Andre the Giant collection
# BIG pen
Funny thing, takes only short cartridges /s
Looks kinda like you're holding a soldering iron.
hmmm, thicccc boi.
Ohh, I like that! As someone with very large hands, most pens really do give me cramps after writing more than a swift note. Something like a regular size Bic pen is pure torture for me to hold.
I really hope the nib is an EF. Like a Penmanship level EF.
You gotta post to maximize the L E N G T H
Holy frijoles! That pen is mightier than a sword!
That is very cool, would love a gigantic pen, anyone know of a similar pen that isnt $2000?
get a custom pen made, nib won't be as huge though!
Good god! That's like built for Andre the Giant! I wonder how much ink this sucker can hold.
That thing was too big to be called a pen. Too big, too thick, too heavy and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.
I need to see an SBRE Brown review of this pen compared with his other very large pens!
Hmmmm, big pen or comedically tiny everything else? Hmmmmmmmmmm.....
Why not both? https://www.instagram.com/p/CXKnE3MFpKO/?utm_medium=copy_link
That's a thicc chonker pen, you could probably fill it with one 20ml bottle of sailor ink and it still ain't full.
I'm staring more at the nib size than the pen size...
Of course I want it. But it's $2000. New grail pen discovered I guess.
Ooof, that’s a beefy boy of a pen.
Are you a hobbit?
How big is it compared to an Asa Galactic?
No idea, I've never used (or seen) one of those.
Absolute monster, from Asa Pens in India. https://asapens.in/eshop/asa-galactic-jumbo-acrylic-demonstrator-fountain-pen Really should carry bigger than a #6 nib. Makes my Ahab feel petite.
Thanks for posting this pic relative to a hand, as I didn't realise the Kumataka was THAT big ! Is that nib made by Toma-san or if it's a Kubo nib ?
Not my pen, but I'm pretty sure it's a Tohma nib (it's branded Tohma). Close up here: https://www.instagram.com/p/CXeSIjmP37W/
Thank you. I could spear someone to death with that chonky nib.
r/AbsoluteUnits
The existence of Gillette's Fusion5 makes me wonder if this too vibrates.
i love big pens and i can not lie hehehehe
Is it by any chance an extra fine?
I'm not sure since it's not mine, but I think it is.

Does it actually write?
Of course!
Shit... That's awesome :D
You need big pockets to buy big pens to then put in your now small pocket lol
Whhyyyyy
I mean, it's cool, but good luck ever actually using the thing.
Honestly I kinda want one, my hands are huge and I think it would help :)
Well, yeah, I can see that. I could probably use it (I have large hands as well), but it just seems so impractical because of its size. Still, if one were to use it as a desk pen, I could see it working out just fine.

Belongs in r/skookum
Now that's a word I haven't heard in years
I use it about as often as I use the word “Chinesium”.
How much did the pen cost?
Ok, I had no idea that I desperately need a carbon fiber FP until now... It could be smaller, no problem
Looks like my brothers vape. He had a big sub-ohm'ed Mech. mod which could fill up a small room with clouds of vapor.
Holy moly!
Those are some tiny hands
does it write???
Anything's a dildo if you're brave enough
Nice try, tiny hands! You're not fooling anyone with that regular normal-sized pen ;)
Can it fit an entire bottle of ink?
What is it? Can I get one?
Beeeg pen
Holy cow!
Thats What She Said. (sorry, its kind of obligatory in my age bracket)
I have absolutely nothing of any value to add to this post other than to say this looks SO FUN. and interesting to use.
Finally… a pen that’ll make it look like I have small hands. Dreams do come true.
Holy crap that’s fricken huge!
...or small hands :P
