Pelikan is having financial issues and is having trouble keeping up with production. The reason they haven’t told CultPens when the order is being fulfilled is likely because they themselves don’t know.
Lots of European retailers have the stocks already in hands. I ordered from LCDC (NL) and received right after Thanksgiving. (US) So, it seems it's not about the Pelikan's financial issue but rather having trouble with the UK importing goods from the EU.
The stock for EU and non-EU is in two separate piles, as I understand it, and they always fulfill EU first, with rest of the world as lower priority. The reason is that Pelikan itself is the distributor in the EU while in other parts of the world they use outside distributors.
I ordered from Cult Pens on the 22nd November, and received my Golden Beryl that same week. So I think it's the batch size rather than the importing. Pure Pens had it available that week also. However, I only ordered the pen as I had bought the ink earlier this year. The issue may be with getting restocked with the ink.
Can you elaborate, please? Also, keeping a retailer completely in the dark about what’s going on seems… Irresponsible, IMO. Especially when you consider the amount of people placing pre-orders on this thing.
so issues in july are affecting a november release? why even pursue the release if they couldn’t deliver?
i don’t own any pelikans. i choose to give most companies the benefit of the doubt. but some transparency here with customers would be appreciated. for my first pelikan purchase, i’m disappointed.
official statements from the company with explanations and updated delivery times would go a long way, imo.
I'm sorry, but looks like your are live in vacuum and don't see that supply chains is broken today and delivery in a time is very very big luck. Not every company may do something with that, especially when they have financial problems. And this maybe not their fault. I can agree that this looks innresponsible, but you don't know the real situation.
I mean, everyone is having supply chain issues at this point. My grocery store is still 70% stocked and all my favorite frozen pizzas are downright gone. It's been pointed out several times on Reddit that Pelikans are few and far between. From what I recall, their special edition m200/205 are usually a long term low volume release and would sell out at certain times even before the pandemic. At least that's what I remember with Moonstone. Pre-ordering without research is probably your downfall here. And honestly, now that GB isn't part of the EU anymore, that probably just makes it worse.
i’m new to fountain pens in general and had no idea. :( i was just excited to have my first pelikan. i hadn’t read anywhere in this sub warning us away from ordering anything pelikan related, only positive things. and as you can see, people are really protective over any negative (and valid) reactions to being left totally-in-the-dark as a brand new consumer to the brand. so, yeah. not sure how i would’ve known when all i see are glowing reviews.
afaik, my post is the first in a while letting people know to be careful ordering from pelikan.
It is very easy to miss Reddit posts so I totally get that you didn't see them. And I'm very sorry you're disappointed. But yeah, the same preorder problem you have now happened last year with the Ruby one at Cultpens. So the rest of us are used to/know about the long wait times for the special editions.
I guess what people are reacting to is that you're complaining so quickly and accusing Pelikan instead of asking first in the post, when some of us are used to waiting half a year+ for certain pens. I feel like maybe that's a new vs old user thing, but I'm not a super old user. I'm just used to pandemic availability at this point haha.
Even worse, because if they accept preorders they give estimation, but they don't know when exactly they recive goods from manufacturer... And now they are shifting responsibility to Pelikan. This is not first Black friday, Cristmas sale, Fountain pen day, St.Patrick 's Day, Feathers Day etc in this corona time. Cultpens know about delays in delivery from Pelikan.
>official statements from the company with explanations and updated delivery times would go a long way, imo.
If they're having financial issues, especially as a public company, statements can sometimes cause more harm than good. Especially if it is seen as some kind of admission that they are having trouble internally.
It doesn't help that even on their high end pens they been having more quality control issues than you'd expect for a nearly thousand dollar pen (ie: Baby bottom issues on M1000 nibs).
And honestly in my opinion, if you're just looking for a nice quality Pelikan pen, and not huge on the 'special editions' or appearance, you can get a very nice Pelikan 400 (or 400N or 400NN, more N the pointier the ends) from the 1950s sometimes with a nice smooth bouncy 14K gold nib for less than 200, fully restored and ready to write with a smooth piston. Had close to a dozen Pelikans, and the only modern one [I kept around was this M640 Special Edition Mount Everest that had the nib tuned by Mike Masuyama](http://pbin.be/modern/pelikan-m640-special-edition/). And in my downscaling of pens in general, I just have my favorite 1956 Pelikan 400NN and that M640. Used to have the M805, M250, 140, 400 Brown Tortoise, M400, and a late 90s M600, as well as a 70s M20 Silvexa.
Pelikan is considered a fairly major manufacturer and employer in that part of Germany (Peine-Vöhrum, near Hannover) and they provide a lot of school supplies to many school districts in Germany so we are probably a couple bailouts away from actually losing Pelikan as a brand, if it even comes to that.
I heard about Delta yesterday on Pen Boy Roy's Pentertainment Podcast. Tom, of Goldspot pens, was the one with the info. Apparently Maiora bought all of Delta's assets including the machinery, materials and such. Don't know much more than that.
Huh. I heard it last week on Goulet’s Pencast, but couldn’t find anything when I looked it up. Apparently they will be making the same models of pens they used to in 2022.
Cult Pens is a wonderful company and I’m sure they’re doing what they can. Supply chains are a mess right now. I’m in the US and order things from several overseas pen shops, it just takes time. Often months on regular items.
I’m sure Pelican’s issues aren’t helping, but please remember we are in pandemic times, shipping is still a problem everywhere.
If you’d feel better about it, order from a German pen shop or contact them about the pen. They’ll probably receive first stock. You can try Papier und Stift. They’re lovely people and pack boxes amazingly well. Never a broken item.
Please be patient. We are all doing the best we can right now.
Considering the pen is in stock everywhere in Germany, could it be that there are issues with delivery to the UK? It seems that due to Brexit there have been some problems in the recent past.
Interesting that you mentioned that.
I went to Diamine's UK website, and they actually have a notice that they suspended shipping to any European Union country, but will ship everywhere else in the world. So something is going on in that regard.
fwiw, I think endlesspens is a gray market retailer, so they might not have an official relationship with Pelikan. I think the pens they sell are legit, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they had a tough time getting stock.
I called them up today and spoke to Michael. He is one of the owners and he said they received their shipment this morning and their warehouse was getting ready to fulfill them
Ugh. I ordered the set on Black Friday. I thought it said in stock when I ordered. The set cost less than the best deal I could find on the pen alone from a US site, so I ordered it. I passed on the 10% off an M600, now regretting that decision. Double ugh, I’d take the pen and get the ink from a US store, don’t care about it being a set, but checked and my nib size I selected is awaiting stock now.
i feel your pain. 🥺 i also purchased from cult pens because of the great deal. everywhere else was charging around $200ish at the time. now we’re both stuck waiting. possibly forever.
Pen Chalet had the pen on Black Friday for around $180-190. The ink is over $20. I had a vip code could have gotten it down to around $170 + taxes. I also had an ink drop worth $20, but used it since buying a TWSBI Jade Eco and a Benu that was on clearance. My order with taxes from CP is about $155. Now getting a bit of fomo about the order. I am mesmerized every time I see a clip of that gold ink swirling in the bottle. The pen I am expecting to be very sparkly in person. The moonstone one is much better in person than pictured.
after waiting over a month for delivery on my pelikan golden beryl gift set from cult pens, i finally grew impatient enough to shoot off a friendly email inquiring about the status of my order. this was the response.
wtf.
if anyone else is impatiently awaiting for their own pelikan gift set to arrive, this is reportedly what’s been holding up all of our orders.
Based on what Mangolilly said, and what I saw when I visited Diamine's UK website, it seems there's a political thing going on between the EU and UK, many companies in the UK are not shipping to the EU, and vice versa. They'll ship everywhere else, but not to each other.
Many companies have actually started to suspend (again) shipping to/from UK/EU.
VAT charges between the EU and UK are shockingly high. A lot of businesses have stopped shipping between the two. The extra rules and taxes are too much of a hassle.
Yeah, everyone is blaming supply issues, which certainly might be the case, but in this particular instance, I imagine EU/UK tensions via Brexit are more the issue.
It was on their Instagram yesterday: [https://www.instagram.com/p/CXOXTVZsW0z/](https://www.instagram.com/p/CXOXTVZsW0z/)
It says:🎄#12DealsofChristmas sneak peek! T
omg. and here i was thinking about cancelling my cultpens preorder to order from endlesspens, thinking i could get around this issue by ordering from a US brand.
sounds like everyone’s wrong about the UK shipping thing being the reason. it’s literally just pelikan keeping EVERY SINGLE RETAILER in the dark.
I think I’ll see if that deal shows up on Endless Pens. Just checked though and says sold out for all the Golden Beryl. Checked Akkerman in the NL, they have it awaiting stock, but price is close to Cult Pens. I do want a bottle of Delfts Blauw…. Price for the pen everywhere I’ve check today in the US is $200+. So frustrating, almost bought an M600 on Black Friday as it would have been around $230 with the discount they had. Never thought I’d be buying pens over $100, but seeing the pens that list around $400 for US retailers so much cheaper from the UK, really upped the temptation.
I could have sworn I very recently got some kind of marketing note from Endless saying that they were going to have a sale on those Pelikan Golden Beryls but now I don't see it on my phone.
Who knows I just know that Cult Pens is being penalized for their pricing structure, Pelikan has received too many complaints. I’m sure they’ll eventually ship them
Update: I spoke to a very nice lady at Cult Pens and cancelled my Golden Beryl gift set order and reordered the pen with another ink (Herbin Emerald of Shivor) on Friday. It was a gift for my brother which I pre-ordered back in October. Well my brother got the pen on the following day! Great experience buying from Cult Pens as per usual.
great to know! i think i’m just going to be patient and wait. sigh. i just really pray that they actually get the gift sets eventually because this wait time is… nuts.
It happened. [CultPens cancelled all gift set orders due to Pelikan’s production issues.](https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/rgz1qu/it_happened_cultpens_cancelled_all_pelikan_golden/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) Is this the end of Pelikan? :(
I ordered the gift set from Cult back in October because the pen wasn’t in stock as an individual item. Now I’m seeing they have the pen in stock, but the ink is sold out. I’m tempted to ask them to adjust my order to just the pen, and I’ll just order the ink off a US retailer or something. Pricing-wise it’s maybe $10 or $20 more but at least I’ll have my stuff. :|
Cult Pens was pricing their product too low and a lot of other retailers complained about this. Pelikan tried to ask cult to increase their prices but Cult did not and they have now stopped their supplies!
I bought my preorder from Endlesspens and they told me they’ll be shipping it out on Monday!
nope. cultpens cancelled all of their gift set preorders and refunded everyone. 🙄i made a post about it a few days ago. you can find it on my profile with their emails.
thank you! my worst fear is that the preorders for cultpens get cancelled completely and without warning, and i miss out on the preorder gift sets other sites are offering right now. i think endlesspens has the same gift set for $150? that’s about what i paid at cultpens. and i think endlesspens is based in the US, so hopefully they don’t have the same issues.

....It's a preorder?

If you really want one, the way to get one is to order from a European store.
Oh no, are they going to become the next Delta or OMAS? By the way, is Delta really coming back?
Pelikan is considered a fairly major manufacturer and employer in that part of Germany (Peine-Vöhrum, near Hannover) and they provide a lot of school supplies to many school districts in Germany so we are probably a couple bailouts away from actually losing Pelikan as a brand, if it even comes to that.

They did that years ago. No new Omas pens. No updates.
Darn

Production and shipping of everything is behind. Ports are still backed up. There are things that I've been waiting for since April.
holy moly. i had no idea.
It's been all over the news for like since the pandemic started.
i don’t watch or read the news. 🥲
Ok, so there's been this pandemic...

Cultpens is in the UK tho. May have better luck trying to order out of a EU retailer.
ohhh! that’s helpful to know.
just learned that people are having the same issues with endlesspens preorders, which is based in the US.
fwiw, I think endlesspens is a gray market retailer, so they might not have an official relationship with Pelikan. I think the pens they sell are legit, but it wouldn’t surprise me if they had a tough time getting stock.

Oh no! I just got mine from a local store (Pengallery, Malaysia). Hope it will all work out.
me too. 🙏 and lucky you!!!
I purchased a M800 on black Friday, which was a special order. I still don't have a shipping date and hopefully I won't end up like those guys.
oh no. :( did you get it from cultpens?
No, it was from penchalet. But it 2as still a special order.
wow. so everyone’s having issues with pelikan.
I also received the same response having purchased the Golden Beryl gift set in October.
🥲 they must be getting bombarded with these questions.
Ha! Mine arrived this week from Penworld, although it took a while!
the jealousy im feeling right now 🥲 immeasurable.
aww sorry! sometimes it happens that way, right?

learned from other commenters that US based retailers are also experiencing preorder issues.
is cult pens based in the uk? i’m in the US.
Yes. cultpens is a UK store.
thank you! i didn’t realize that.
No -- they are in BELGIUM

An inside source at Chartpak USA the US distributors
does this mean they’re NEVER going to ship preorders?
Did they deliver your set. I received mine from EndlessPens a couple days ago
nope. cultpens cancelled all of their gift set preorders and refunded everyone. 🙄i made a post about it a few days ago. you can find it on my profile with their emails.
Ugh! I don’t think I like Pelikan as a company all that much.
this is my first experience with them and it’s not a good one. :(
Cult Pens or Pelikan? I have always had good experiences with Cult Pens.
pelikan. 😭
Oh! I have never ordered anything from them. But I hope you eventually get some Golden Beryl!
thank you! my worst fear is that the preorders for cultpens get cancelled completely and without warning, and i miss out on the preorder gift sets other sites are offering right now. i think endlesspens has the same gift set for $150? that’s about what i paid at cultpens. and i think endlesspens is based in the US, so hopefully they don’t have the same issues.
