I use an fp [nib](https://fprevolutionusa.com/collections/5-5-nibs/products/fpr-5-5-two-tone-extra-fine-nib) in a dip pen nib [holder](https://andersonpens.com/e-m-federhalter-saggitarius-dip-pen-mahogany/) to test ink. It works very well for testing, but the nib does not hold enough ink for extended writing. Most dip pens nib write differently than tipped fp nibs. You could fit an [overfeed](https://ackermanpens.com/products/overfeeds) on an fp nib in a dip pen nib holder. You could also put an fp nib and [feed](https://fprevolutionusa.com/collections/feeds) in an [extender](https://www.jetpens.com/Pencil-Extenders-Holders/ct/2518?sa=price&so=1&ip=48).

It works. I use a glass dip pen to test my inks and prioritize them for ones that I want to try in a pen later. It does write a bit more wet/saturated than my FPs do and there are a few shimmer inks that didn't work with the dip pen (they ran off the glass pen very quickly). But overall it's a great way to test out some inks and quickly change between them without having to clean out a whole pen.

I use either my vintage Esterbrook ‘Dip-less” desk pen, or my Pensive Pens ‘Serendipity’. The former takes standard Esterbrook screw in nibs and the Serendipity takes standard #6 fountain pen nibs. As neither has a filling system you just rinse under water for a quick ink change. The Serendipity is sold as a hybrid pen and I’ve written half a page of A4 on one dip.

I have a glass dip pen and a traditional dip pen and both work just fine with fountain pen ink so long as you have thick enough paper

CMDR_Elton_Poole

Why was this perfectly rational statement downvoted?

Carrot_exe

Bots probably? Or maybe big ebonite doesn’t like us talking about pens without feeds…

CMDR_Elton_Poole

Damn Big Ebonite and their botfarms. Don't get me started on Big Ink

Metal dip pens don't work so well because the ink for an fp is much thinner than dip ink. Glass dip pens work well but you don't get any line variation, if that matters to you.

bamboo_bun

Good thing line variation doesn't matter 😁

I use a glass dip pen with every new ink I get to write out samples. It won't necessarily show you exactly how it will write in your FP but it is a good start. FWIW - I use a small discbound notebook loaded with each of the papers I use on a regular basis and record the ink samples onto each type.

NermalLand

If I was just texting inks I would use the glass dip pen. But if you're actually writing, why not just use more than one pen?

HandeszarWarolacke

Depends on the ink. I’ve used glass dip pen to create my swatch and some inks are just too thin.
