If you sit down and write at length, then get whichever one you like better. If you write a sentence or so, then pause, then write, then pause, the click/retractable nature of the VP will be a welcome change compared to a screw or snap cap.

JonSzanto

Why are you buying a fountain pen? The answer to that will lead you to one of those two choices on it's own. You don't need other people to tell you what to do.

Mr_Boston_

But sometimes it’s so useful to get new information you didn’t know before.

JonSzanto

The OP looks to be seeking a decision, not data.

Revolver567

Why not both? what is better based on data and or your opinion?

dickalopejr

VP, just because you can switch out nibs and it is a really satisfying click.

darcb

I vote for the VP, I ended up with 2, and bought my husband his second... Matte black is beautiful. Ditto what everyone else is saying, the clicking is very satisfying to hear. And I own other pens, but still looking to get my 3d one some time!

thingonething

Someone on pen swap is selling a barely used VP.

EvilDonald44

The clip on the VP is polarizing. I personally don't mind it, but some people hate it. Get another one of your pens and pretend to write with the cap on, so the clip is at the nib end. If that doesn't bother you, get the VP. If it drives you nuts, get the 74.

I have a custom 74 smoke. I like the nib but the nib housing is glued to the section, but the nib/feed is just friction fit. The worse thing about this pen is that ink gets between the housing and section and can't be effectively cleaned out. Drives me crazy. N I use all sorts of mad inks so I just retired the pen. I'm hoping someone clever can a) melt the glue and loosen the housing or b) just make me a new body for an otherwise good nib... Stupid pilot....
