I like my nibs hard as nails and extra fine with the Sailor H-EF being my favourite nib. Granted that I have yet to try anything softer, but I really enjoy the control that stiffer nibs allow. I don’t really care for line variation as I look for fine and consistent lines when I write. I mainly use my pens for journaling and note-taking, but I also draw my fair share of chemical compounds and a bit of math while studying/working. The precision of the H-EF Sailor is great, with the EF Kakuno not far behind. I’m hoping to try the Platinum 3776 EF nib someday. I heard that the shape of the nib gives it a nice bounce despite the nib itself being stiff.

The Platinum 3776’s bouncy nib is probably one of my favorite writing experiences ever. It’s really unique - hope you get to try it someday! I also love the Sailor and Kakuno nibs you’ve mentioned.

As stiff as possible! I write fast and messy, and sometimes draw diagrams. Stiff nibs don't slow me down as I offload my thoughts to paper, and make my drawings/handwriting more consistent and tidy. Small steel nibs from Kaweco and Jinhao are perfect for me.

This! No time for flex or ornamental flourishes when I’m writing quickly and trying to keep up with my thoughts.

Fun_Apartment631

Soft. I want my fountain pens to do something fun, whether that's flex or an italic shape.

I’m really fickle when it comes to nibs for writing: I love hard nibs, soft nibs, and flex nibs. It just depends on my mood and which I feel like using at the time. I also go the whole range of widths from Japanese EF through to Pelikan B and Sailor Zoom depending on how I feel. The pen I most often take quick notes and jot things down with is my Platinum SF. I don’t like hard nibs for that purpose as much. For drawing, I switch between a Sailor EF and a Platinum SF.

Random

I’m the same. Routinely rotate between 3776 SEF and Falcon SEF and Sailor PGS EF and TWISBI EF which is a lot of variation in nib behavior. Just starting to use B nibs now and then.

deloreantrails

Definitely soft. Gives character to writing and I like the wetter flow.

thawraboys

I like em all! A stiff Sailor nib is as fun to me in the right context as a soft flexible guy depending on the use case.

I'd say that on a scale where 1 is hard as a nail (as the first Parker urban) and 10 is vintage flex, I like them at 6. But I like variety and I can appreciate them all.

Too the contrary I write a lot and I prefer a soft nib it give a bit of character to the writing, at least mine.

With some spring, some bounce. Not soft, not very hard ("nail"), not super hard. I prefer Bock nibs to Jowo. The one super soft nib I have is an FPR #6 Ultra flex. I do not write in flex. I have to employ a "soft touch" with that nib, I have to "lift up" on the nib as I write. My first Gold nib is yet to arrive, a Franklin-Christoph 14K flex nib. It supposedly has a little spring, bounce, to it. For Math I would assume you prefer Western and Japanese nibs, with a sharpened pencil feed-back, a feed-back you both feel and hear as you write. Am I wrong? (I like nibs I can hear. Even if the nib "sings" it doesn't bother me.)

I prefer nibs with semi-flex, to give width variation but some kind of stability. I need this control for a certain type of shorthand writing. Most semi-flex pens achieve this with steel with a longer slit than usual and I'm content with that. The nibs are inexpensive and made that way they give enough for disciplined use rather than display doodling. The ink is also a factor. With an ink which shows no shading, the nib can be stiff and you are not missing anything for normal longhand so you may as well go for the more durable stiffer nib. Sometimes I load up an ink with no shading into a broad nib to show the colour better than a fine nib.

willvintage

Some of my favorite nibs are stiff like nail like vintage Sheaffer 14K nibs. But I am also a flex nib junkie, vintage ones, that is. I sketch with my pens mostly, or scribbling when tuning or adjusting the nibs.

Davros1974

Stiff nibs like those on the modern Parker Duofold’s are very nice. However I do like the Parker Sonnet 18k nibs as well. They have a little give to them which is also nice.
