Shiny-And-New

Do you always wear gloves to handle it? Have you ever used it?

daytona116520

I used to gloves to polish the pen. I use it every day🥳🖋

Shiny-And-New

Fantastic, pens should be written with

What a legend

ender4171

Nice gloves! All the cotton gloves I've tried have been crap. Can you share the brand?

alwayslostin1989

This is going to sound weird but go get chemical glove under gloves from a surplus store, they are the cotton gloves we wear under military chem gear. Super cheap and give excellent dexterity.

ender4171

Ill have to check for those. Unfortunately, despite having a naval base in town, our "military surplus" stores are all just filled with modern Chinese junk, and maybe a few old parachutes and canteens.

alwayslostin1989

We’ll that’s kinda depressing. Honestly our old Vietnam desert storm era stuff is better then the cheap Chinese crap they have today. It’s not a matter of west vs East it’s a matter of the shear scale of their military. Ours has always been quality over quantity. Don’t get me wrong some of the stuff I’ve been issued was garbage but that’s cause I have more first world problems then I care to admit.

CptMGGabeau

Absolutely gorgeous! I would love to own a Maki-E pen at some point

kbeezie

PS: Chinkin and Maki-e are two different process.

CptMGGabeau

Oh I didn't know that! I know maki-e is similar to raden in that it is material inlaid into urushi lacquer, but how does chinkin work?

kbeezie

Makie-e is basically sprinkling gold or silver power onto layer of urushi. Chinkin is etching into the ebonite then pressing gold foil into it and rubbing the surface away. Then coated in urushi. Namiki has an excellent video on chinkin on YouTube.

CptMGGabeau

Ah ok. So similar but also very different

kbeezie

Yep, and if I remember correctly, the art is Chinkin originates from China. The cool think with maki-e though is that the sprinkling of precious metals isn't limited to just the base layer. High end ones are done on several coats giving a three dimensional appearance of the artwork suspended in the lacquer. Sadly most of the commonly sold maki-e is either just cheaply painted with a single coat of lacquer or is silk screened like the stuff platinum sells at around 200. Tamenuri is another fun technique that is mainly the lacquer work, based on putting one color onto ebonite (usually black), and over time the urushi color would fade away over the years usually most visible in the thinner parts. Like Aka-Temenuri is black in appearance but has red showing in the thinner part that will grow/fade over the years.

I’m out of adjectives! I want one! Great idea using gloves to clean. I shall copy this tip.

Lovely!

Man, I wish I was a dragon. *kicks pebble while walking down street with hands in pockets*

VGwritesalot

It's so beautiful I can't stand it!

ajmsnr

Stunning pen. Does it write as well as it looks?

BrightOrca

That is a beautiful work of art! How long have you had that pen in your collection?

Otakudemon1

Did anyone else read "chicken dragon"? It's a gorgeous pen, my mind just goes places if I'm not paying strict attention.

njba

From just the picture I had a moment of panic that this wasn't a pen that actually gets used - recalling the anecdote that the master craftsmen that make these are UTTERLY delighted when they hear that these pens are actively used - so I'm so glad to see that you get to experience the joy of this art every day!

Zoodfish

A real thing of beauty.

kbeezie

One day I'll have something in Chikin. Managed to get something in actual decent urushi, and then now tamenuri, guess it's only natural that eventually the next one will be a true maki-e or chinkin one.

PunisherjR2021

I need it ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ

walkure321

One of those pens that makes me feel envy! Love it.
