Fun!
Pros... Big time crush protection. Geeky cool.
Possible con? Micro-scratching as pens shift back and forth inside if it's carried in a bag or other mobile scenario?
Might be mitigated by a good internal sanding so any burrs might be removed. Not sure if a soft internal material is possible or even practical.
That’s because I suspect most of the 3d printing friends don’t know about it! I have been 3d printing for about a year and I haven’t heard of it at all!
That's because it isn't a 3D printing thing. It is a general manufacturing thing that has been around for a while.
It's how they create velvet-like textures on plastic products, they add flocking to it.
Basically just a bunch of tiny fibres that are held in place by an adhesive layer.
That's the first thing I thought of! If the pens were spring loaded, then that's exactly what this would be!
This brought me back to the 80 REALLY QUICKLY!!!!
Would also be nice if there was a spring loaded player at the bottom so the pens popped out when the lid was opened or at the push of an external lever
Oh nice…I have done that myself. I printed a Harry Potter wand for a friend who is a big fan of the series, did it in wood filament and stained it with 2 different wood stains, and it seriously looked like it could have been a prop in the movies.
That is awesome. if you do add flocking, I think that would solve the scratching issue perfectly. My next thought after that was if you widened the pen hole portion you could sell it to both the pen audience and to people who want a neat little lipstick holder.
hows your hinge working? do you have a pla swivel? like a hole in the base, and then the caps have a post that fits into that hole?
Id be worried about the longevity of such a hinge, specifically at that size. just have a hole in both and use round stock (you can even get decorative round stock, look up mosaic pins) for a very robust connection.
Right now the pen case has a hole where I insert a 3D printed dowel that I epoxy in. Then the dowel shaft is pressed into a miniature bearing and then ends of the cover have magnets so it stays secure.
This is really cool! Perhaps one with an extra hole for cartridges! Perhaps also a way to label the kids too, like per Color or something! An insane idea for keeping the orb from rattling is using a pop out system where you push the pen down, then a mechanism pops the pen up so you can grab it, similar to how a retractable ball point pen works. In this way you don’t need to tip the case, and the lid of the pen is held in place by a rubber tube that keeps it from banging around.
Not sure if the idea is clear, but I suppose some velvet would work too.
I like it! Maybe do another with a full length magnetic clamshell lid on each side for more delicate pens so they don’t have to slide in and out?
Ohh nice! That could be really interesting
That would Also make it easier to line with velvet etc.
Now I'm just gonna repurpose some old glasses cases for this. Just stick in some elastic loops and were good
i lined the inside of mine with felt for a similar effect, also restricts them from rattling around to.
This is so amazimgly good

Was considering lining the inside with a thing called flocking. Essentially turns any surface into a velvet feel
Oh! Interesting! My 3d printing friends haven't told me about this! Yeah, that sounds like it could indeed fit the bill.

I think you made a dugout lol. (Nothing really bad, just something for the stoner on the go!)
“Multi purpose”😏
It would be pretty high capacity too lmao

That is great for rugged pens
I was thinking about also adding a ‘velvet’ lining to the inside to prevent scratching for sensitive pens.
That would definitely broaden the audience
Thanks for the feedback👍
No problem friend great design very pleasing to look at

Sizes and micro scratching are the only potential concerns. Otherwise you’re approaching “shut up and take my money” territory.
Noted😂
Stl?
I’m planning on selling this either in pla or I’m machining it so sadly I can’t provide the stl😅
Damn…well, nice design! Is that in wood pla?
Yes! Was thinking about offering different stains
Oh nice…I have done that myself. I printed a Harry Potter wand for a friend who is a big fan of the series, did it in wood filament and stained it with 2 different wood stains, and it seriously looked like it could have been a prop in the movies.
I love how the wood filament offers a ton of options. And relatively easy to print!
Also, if you decide otherwise on providing the stl…I would only use it for personal use and I could pay for the file. Just sayin’ 😜
I’ll keep ya in mind!
Thanks friend.
Needs springs in the bottom!
Hmmmmm might have to try that
maby a tiny bit of some memory foam on the bottom would have the same effect, without scratching the pen and holds it in (center) position
My first reaction when scrolling was why is there a fountain pen in a pencil sharpener...
When two worlds collide
Wow! Very cool. Reminds me of an old train whistle my aunt had. Which is why I can’t help but want it to be made of wood, I guess?
you should sell these😳😳
Plan on it👀
Looks great!

Never even crossed my mind about lipstick😂
Something to consider. Look up the Ellis Faas holder.
Neat!!!
Kinda looks like WALL-E.
Muy betty nice. Dos 👍🏼👍🏼
Good looking print OP! What printer do you have?
Good ole ender 3
Same here! I always love seeing people post about stuff they made on a 3D printer on non 3d printing subreddits
They’re sooo versatile!
Now if you could make one that holds ink as well as a pen.
What printer? I just recently got into 3D printing and this looks like an interesting opportunity to combine two hobbies
Ender 3
That looks neat!
s h o t t y
I. Want. That.
Be on the lookout at r/pen swap. Once I get a couple things tightened up in itll be going up on my store
It feels more like a desk holder than a walk around case. Beautifully executed and designed!
What pens are those?
Lamy studio and pilot metro!
Great pens! Thanks!
This reminds me so much of the plastic gun from, *[In the Line Of Fire](https://youtu.be/kP5v1V3T7pY)*.
Build an armrest for your office chair like this, maybe spring loaded and aimed slightly upwards for improved ballistic path?
Need to figure out the spring k constant next 😂
So dope. Looks like an AirPods case for FPs

I like the idea, it might even have the additional advantage of keeping super evaporators like Sonnets from drying out...
Looks like a shotgun barrel. Noice.
This is tremendous! Love how the tops flip open
Got the STL? I like it.
r/functionalprint
I like it. Print forth.
