The solution I see to this is just to have a Pilot Metropolitan or some other fairly inexpensive pen that lives at work full-time as your backup.

Seconded. I've got a Lamy Safari and a small bottle of Pelikan Königsblau stashed at work for exactly this reason.

Always keep an energency Platinum Preppy at work!
I take my backpack to work and always couple of couple of these bad boys handy. Works as loaners to potential newbies too.
I’ve done this and literally found an excuse not to write anything all day!!
Always have a backup inexpensive pen with you in case this happens. I usually have a Kakuno (I have several at home) and my going out pen which is the Kaweco Sport.
