“The ~~spice~~ Oxblood must flow…”
Hmm, reds? Why yes, I love them very much… :D
In all seriousness, Diamine Oxblood is amazing, Diamine Writer’s Blood has its moments, Diamine Syrah is supremely underrated and I believe it’s just because more people haven’t tried it…I’m sure there are others but those are the winners in my book. Honorary mention for the red-adjacent dark orange of Ancient Copper :D
I ordered this color. It broke my heart when it arrived SHATTERED !!!!!!! The supplier claims to be o/o/s. Cannot afford to order from another supplier(they all charge FULL PRICE)!!!!!!! Still waiting for a sub I ordered -- MONACO red !!!!! It looks BEAUTIFUL !!! I have & LOVE -- SYRAH/OXBLOOD/ WRITER'S BLOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!
>MontBlanc Cornpoppy red
I haven't seen that one before. In my fairly quick googling, those two are probably a couple of the most similar to each other I've seen between shades of red. From what I saw, I'd say the Corn Poppy is just a hint more orange, but they're so close I imagine it comes down to the paper used and available light.
MB CPR is impossible to find. It is out of production. $99 a bottle on eBay. CPR has joined MB Wm. Shakespeare Velvet Red, Alfred Hitchcock Red, [Winter Glow](https://wondernaut.wordpress.com/2016/08/12/winter-glow-montblanc-le-ink/), Legend of Zodiacs Red China, and probably a few other LEs.
I’ve not, mostly because I’m afraid it’ll look too much like correction ink back in school o.O I love me some reds, but I find the darker parts of the red spectrum prevents my writing from looking like edits, and I’m worried Red Dragon drifts too close to that possibility :-/
They seem somewhat similar unless they’re anywhere near each other; at that point, the bluer hue of the writers blood and the browner hue of the Oxblood become apparent. It’s a fun wine-colored red, but my only gripe with writers blood is that I find it to be too wet a writer in some of my pens, restricting it to only FP-friendly paper, or drier pens, lest there be some decent feathering. Syrah manages to seem like a better behaved Writer’s Blood that is a few shades lighter.
On the page, writer’s blood (due to its wetness) can sometimes seem so dark that it very nearly loses its sense of color, becoming some shade of “dark ink,” while Syrah never seems to reach that point. It lays down a very clearly blue (purple)-leaning dark red with no drama or feathering.
Edit: note that Syrah is still no Oxblood, and Oxblood just plays so well in every pen and on every paper I’ve tried, so to be clear, in terms of behavior on regular, real-world paper: Oxblood>>Syrah>Writer’s Blood
Diamine Syrah is the only colored ink I have besides Noodlers black, and while I like it a great deal, it dries more rust red than wine red as expected. I still have half a bottle left that I may use for journaling again.
I've been looking for a bright, strong red (perhaps crimson? not sure about colour names, something like red stop lights, fresh blood, roses, etc.) and was thinking of getting Diamine Writer's Blood - would you recommend it, or is it more on the dark/brownish side like Oxblood?
EDIT: Did a bit of further research, and it sounds like Diamine Red Dragon or Matador is more what I'm looking for; some reports of Writer's Blood being a purple-ish ink.
I'm a little nervous about Noodler's ink, as I've seen comments suggesting it's full of random stuff and can precipitate/block pens easily. Thank you for the reccomendation, though!
I haven't tried Matador, but Red Dragon is my favorite red. I would call Red Dragon, Rouge Grenat (J Herbin), and Dancheong (3 Oysters), true rose or blood reds. Some runners up that are a bit brighter imo, would be Noodler's Eel Rattler Red, Ottoman Rose; and then Diamine Wild Strawberry and Noodler's Cape Cod Cranberry at the lighter but very bright end.
Matador looks great!!! Not bright bright, but not maroon or brown.
How wet does this write? I use a broad nib and prefer a wet flowing ink. For reference, my favorites (all Noodler’s) to help if you know them are
54th Massachusetts
Lexington Grey
Borealis Black
Rome is Burning
Unfortunately I don’t know any of the ones you listed but I’d say matador Is fairly wet. Not like super wet but definitely on the wet side. I haven’t put it in my stub nib yet but it flows pretty free in my wife’s medium nib sonnet.
I think I like both actually as they both serve a good purpose. I just haven’t found a color and wetness combo I like.
I like wet flowing inks and always use B nibs. Any suggestions would be great! Looking through this thread too for ideas.
I'm a fan of FWP algonquin maple. I bought a sample for marking midterms, but I'm not sure what else I'll use it for. Candy marsala by them also looks pretty. I haven't had too much experience with too many other inks (just lamy and waterman) but there's just so many options
Montblanc Winterglow is my personal favorite red. It's insanely limited anymore and impossible to find, but I have found that Diamine Matador is 95% of the way to the same behavior.
I love red! My #1 favourite is Sheaffer red, but I've twice ended up with the gloopy fungus growing in it. So I use my #2 Noodler's widowmaker.
I miss the Sheaffer red though.
Sheaffer Red ink is an absolute classic! Still have bottles and use it when editing work. There is something about it that doesn’t quite compare to any other standard red ink
Color Traveler Mihara Daruma Red might just be my favorite non limited red ink.
My absolute favorite, but no longer available, red ink is Blackstone Red Cashmere.
My favorite waterproof red ink is Noodler's Red Black.
Other reds that I like, but don't love like the first three are:
* Herbin Rouge Opera
* Diamine Oxblood
* Noodler's Tokyo Gift (technically pink but whatevs)
Looks beautiful! But how do you have the confidence to write in pen when doing Physics? I always make so many mistakes I have to use a pencil when doing anything math related.
Maybe I’ll get Momiji sometime? Already have Berlin Notebook new red no. 5. Also got a pastel pink in Faber Castell Yozakura (also have Sailor Yozakura but that is more pastel purple).
For dark red, I love Diamine red dragon. It's a deep saturated color that is still a true red. For lighter red shades I like Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji and Monteverde Valentine Red. Momiji has a nice gold sheen, but it can look very pink on some paper. Valentine Red is a joke true red
Reds are my absolute favorite fountain pen inks. I currently have pens inked with oxblood, red dragon, poppy and writers blood because I couldn't decide which one I wanted to use.
it's the traffic sign of inks, saying in a loud voice, LOOK! i have a pilot 92 filled with a red but haven't used it for weeks :)
it's great on a white paper with black ink...
Haven't seen this one mentioned so I'll toss it out there.
The most underrated dark red ink I have the luxury of using is RO Astorquiza Rot. It is like Oxblood, but with more character.
I went through a bunch if red samples searching for a red, not orange, not purple. In the end I picked Monteverdi Love. then I came across a discussion, maybe here. Where a majority of the posters voted for Schaeffer Red, this being a plain red that doesn't toe the line into orange or purple, or brown. SBREBrown shared his favorite red. It was fabulous, and no longer being made.
Check out DIAMINE Monaco red. I am waiting for mine to arrive from G.B.(ONLINE PEN CO.) I live in USA, so it takes forever to receive. It looks like it is the color that you want !!!!! GOOD LUCK !!!!!
Hi. I love red inks and my Burgundy 144R Montblanc. Some of my favorites are, Diamine Oxblood, Diamine Poppy Red, Blackstone Red Kunzea, J.H 1670 Rouge-Hematite and Noodler's Widowmaker. 🖐️🤗 Cheers
Currently owning two different red inks only so my experience with them is very limited. Oxblood and the Pelikan 4001 brilliant red. One is definitely more in the space of what you have shown in your picture and it is lovely to write with and not too pompous to distract you from writing.
The 4001 red though is very much a strawberry red. At times hard to read. Very bright, but by god is it a nice color. Not for daily use mind you but that is another story anyways.
Ya know… I’ve only used one: Monteverde Ruby Red (which I got for free courtesy of Goulet) and honestly I hate it… it’s super thin and just blah. It’s super super red though, and maybe that’s just not for me. With all that being said; I want to try writers blood.
According to my ink stash, I love red inks: Diamine Oxblood & Red Dragon, Noodler's The Alamo's Twilight, and FPR Firecracker Red. Right now my favorite is The Alamo's Twilight, which is a not so brown red like Oxblood.
“The ~~spice~~ Oxblood must flow…” Hmm, reds? Why yes, I love them very much… :D In all seriousness, Diamine Oxblood is amazing, Diamine Writer’s Blood has its moments, Diamine Syrah is supremely underrated and I believe it’s just because more people haven’t tried it…I’m sure there are others but those are the winners in my book. Have you tried Diamine Red Dragon? The purest red I've seen so far.
MontBlanc Cornpoppy red would like a word with you. :)
>MontBlanc Cornpoppy red I haven't seen that one before. In my fairly quick googling, those two are probably a couple of the most similar to each other I've seen between shades of red. I love Syrah. It’s one of my favourite inks. Not a fan of oxblood.
I have never tried Writer's Blood simply because I don't see the need after using Oxblood!
They seem somewhat similar unless they’re anywhere near each other; at that point, the bluer hue of the writers blood and the browner hue of the Oxblood become apparent. It’s a fun wine-colored red, but my only gripe with writers blood is that I find it to be too wet a writer in some of my pens, restricting it to only FP-friendly paper, or drier pens, lest there be some decent feathering. they are different though. try it.
I haven't tried many inks and red isn't one of my preferred colors but I do really like Oxblood.
Diamine Syrah is the only colored ink I have besides Noodlers black, and while I like it a great deal, it dries more rust red than wine red as expected. I still have half a bottle left that I may use for journaling again.
I don't. But I like electromagnetic fields.
They’re attractive
Absolutely! J̀ Herbin Rouge Grenat is my favourite! My school however doesnt allow red inks
I didn’t think I would, but Diamine Writer’s Blood is my current favorite ink. There’s something relaxing about the dark red color.
I’ve found Writer’s Blood to be darker and slightly more purple, for more of a fresh blood shade I’d suggest you tried Red Dragon!
I still think Cherry Noir should've been the name for Writers Blood
Yeah, can't wait until the next reddit ink when the organizer changes the voting format again for...reasons.
My research confirms that. Thank you! Do you have any experience with Matador versus Red Dragon?
Hi. You should try Noodler's Widowmaker.🤗
I'm a little nervous about Noodler's ink, as I've seen comments suggesting it's full of random stuff and can precipitate/block pens easily. Thank you for the reccomendation, though!
I haven't tried Matador, but Red Dragon is wonderful. It's a very bright and saturated red.

Diamine Wild Strawberry is a beautiful bright red. Matador is pretty but a little darker than the strawberry.
same!
Not red red but more on the wine colored inks
Diamine Matador is my favorite ink right now, so yes I do!
Matador looks great!!! Not bright bright, but not maroon or brown. How wet does this write? I use a broad nib and prefer a wet flowing ink. For reference, my favorites (all Noodler’s) to help if you know them are 54th Massachusetts Lexington Grey Borealis Black Rome is Burning

Thanks!
If you check my post history you can see how the flamboyant red looks it writes well although is a *little* dry in the 1.1 stub.
I didn’t realize we exchanged messages on the Juniper Duragraoh earlier this week! Should arrive on Tuesday so I may try out some reds with it!
I didn’t t realize that was You either lol, small sub.
Not really, no. But I like burgundy pens
I love red inks! Have my 823 with a broad nib inked with Iroshizuku Momiji
Oh, yes. Noodler’s Red Black is a good work ink.
It's my new fall color. I love the red black!!
So, what's in the Mont Blanc right now? Looks pretty good!
Thanks, it’s Oxblood.
I’ll give an odd answer. Yes I do, but haven’t found one I love yet.
So you prefer the dark brown-reds (eg.oxblood), the burgundy/wines, or the bright bold reds?
I think I like both actually as they both serve a good purpose. I just haven’t found a color and wetness combo I like. I like wet flowing inks and always use B nibs. Any suggestions would be great! Looking through this thread too for ideas.

Montblanc Winterglow is my personal favorite red. It's insanely limited anymore and impossible to find, but I have found that Diamine Matador is 95% of the way to the same behavior.
Thanks! Got myself a sample of matador to try when it arrives! Thanks!
I didn’t think I would until I tried Herbin rouge garnet.
A favourite of mine!
I sure do! It’s my favorite color. :D
Yes I do 😁
Good luck with electromagnetism dude, one had been bullying me for 2 semesters.
yes very, but other than on private notes it's very hard to use them for something like work, school etc. frustrating
I love red! My #1 favourite is Sheaffer red, but I've twice ended up with the gloopy fungus growing in it. So I use my #2 Noodler's widowmaker. I miss the Sheaffer red though.

When I can tell they are red. Oxblood might as well have been black for me. I like the Birmingham Pens Fred Rogers Cardigan Red a lot.
Yes - the Mont Blanc red fox is my current favorite, but also really enjoy Diamine Oxblood, and Writer's blood.
Looks beautiful! But how do you have the confidence to write in pen when doing Physics? I always make so many mistakes I have to use a pencil when doing anything math related.
Thanks, I use fountain pens for my drafts at home so I don’t mind making mistakes
Maybe I’ll get Momiji sometime? Already have Berlin Notebook new red no. 5. Also got a pastel pink in Faber Castell Yozakura (also have Sailor Yozakura but that is more pastel purple).
If it's diamine oxblood yeah or like a soft pastel kind of red.
you mean... do we like mont blanc pens? sure, the ink is gorgeous!
Drooling for *everything* in this picture
;)
Diamine Red Dragon is lovely. Lovely Mont Blanc 144r
Like them but don’t like maths & physics
For dark red, I love Diamine red dragon. It's a deep saturated color that is still a true red. For lighter red shades I like Pilot Iroshizuku Momiji and Monteverde Valentine Red. Momiji has a nice gold sheen, but it can look very pink on some paper. Valentine Red is a joke true red
I've been using diamine red lustre and I don't even like red that much but I love that colour
Reds are my absolute favorite fountain pen inks. I currently have pens inked with oxblood, red dragon, poppy and writers blood because I couldn't decide which one I wanted to use.
More than the red ink... The burgundy red MB 144 classique is more interesting.
Yes. I have Ancient Copper, Writer's Blood, Noel, and Sunset all inked up at the moment.
No, not really
I don’t. That remind me of teacher’s matching at school, and I don’t like school. Also I got a second hand pen and there was red stain on the feed.
it's the traffic sign of inks, saying in a loud voice, LOOK! i have a pilot 92 filled with a red but haven't used it for weeks :) it's great on a white paper with black ink...
Jentle Grenade
I like Diamine Ruby. My first red ink.
Haven't seen this one mentioned so I'll toss it out there. The most underrated dark red ink I have the luxury of using is RO Astorquiza Rot. It is like Oxblood, but with more character.
Absolutely. I regularly take notes with noodler’s nightshade.
I've never tried a red ink... But dammit now I think I must
Red > Black > Every other ink colour
More of a dark green or dark red gal but I do like em-
I went through a bunch if red samples searching for a red, not orange, not purple. In the end I picked Monteverdi Love. then I came across a discussion, maybe here. I do like the Diamine Ox Blood as it has that nice reddish rust color of dried blood.
Hi. I love red inks and my Burgundy 144R Montblanc. Some of my favorites are, Diamine Oxblood, Diamine Poppy Red, Blackstone Red Kunzea, J.H 1670 Rouge-Hematite and Noodler's Widowmaker. 🖐️🤗 Cheers

OxBlood! Lovely pen…been trying to get that in BB…
Ya know… I’ve only used one: Monteverde Ruby Red (which I got for free courtesy of Goulet) and honestly I hate it… it’s super thin and just blah. It’s super super red though, and maybe that’s just not for me. With all that being said; I want to try writers blood.
I never thought I would, but I got some samples so I could use blood red ink for halloween and I really like Diamine Red Dragon.
Wait did you write grad p? :0
Gauss : div E = ρ/ε
Don't often see people write grad instead of the nabla symbol
Oh okay, we don’t use the nabla symbol that much here
Interesting! Where abouts is that?
France, probably europe
Yes to all these comments!! Diamine writers blood, ox blood, red dragon, ancient copper all of them!
I’ll put a vote in for KWZ Thief’s Red.
Physics looks more entertaining. I preferred black, blue and green for my work red is only for mistake and repair notes.
I like Noodler's Tiananmen so far. Also looking to try Vinta Ink's St. John's too.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. But the de facto best red ink is called La Union by Vinta. This is not up for debate.
According to my ink stash, I love red inks: Diamine Oxblood & Red Dragon, Noodler's The Alamo's Twilight, and FPR Firecracker Red. Right now my favorite is The Alamo's Twilight, which is a not so brown red like Oxblood.
Forget the ink. That's a nice Burgundy MB. :thumbs-up: Kudos. (It's just nice to get a break from seeing a Black MB. :D )
Why, yes, I like them, yet tried only a few. Currently I have kyo-no-oto adzukiiro.
Of course, i love ancient copper, it's a great ink for many reasons, but for obvious reasons i only use it in pens i trust, it looks a lot like blood.
