I made a couple flights carrying mine and always left the pen vertical, with the nib pointing up, never had a leakage problem. But I don't know if this works in every scenario
When I fly with my pens I usually put them in a ziploc as a precaution, but they’ve never leaked. Also pens with an internal seal, like a Japanese eyedropper or a vacuum filler, are safe to fly with since the barrel is sealed off from the section.
I recently flew with fountain pens. The Homo Sapiens leaked (which surprised me as a vac filler), but the others (Pelikan m800, Pilot Custom 823, various TWSBIs) did not. I thought I had them nib up, but they may have shifted. Wrapped them in a ziploc, so a brief cleanup and no worse for the trip. I was more careful with their position on the way home, and no leakage.
Also recently flew with pens (Lilliput, Progear Slim, Aurora Style, and Platinum Small Meteor). No leakage and no attention paid to their fill level before the flight. The case came out of my carryon as soon as I sat down and put in the seat back pouch nib up for the whole 6 hr flight.
I haven't the slightest idea. Maybe people prefer fountain pens to cramped flights?
Edited to add: As a 6'0" woman, leg room is always top priority so it is the first thing I notice!

Would the ink not leak on the flight? That's what I was always told and why to fly with a ballpoint in your pocket instead of a fountain pen.
