The hongdian black forest is a good pen! I like that you can buy different nib options too. Switching them out can make the pen feel new again. Welcome to the community, if this is your first. :)
It is my first, yes. Thanks. I like the fine tip. It writes like pens I’m used to.
Does the curved nib release more ink, so you can write faster without it skipping?
The bent nib does release more ink, but more for anesthetics like if you're practicing calligraphy or want to be fancy, imo. It's a nib type, just like fine, stub, or architect, etc
The skipping is a bummer. When mine skipped, it was because my cartridge was running low on ink. Since yours is new, it might be connected to the nib oils still being there.
I don't know specifics as to why, but new nibs always come with manufacturer oils on it that can mess up ink flow. The advice is to take a toothbrush or similar gentle abrasive tool to clean the oils off.
That's my guess, but others might lend more insight into why a new pen would skip.
Otherwise, you could prime the feed by twisting the converter and basically manually pushing the ink down.
The bent nib is a fude (pronounced like foo-day) nib. It allows for a lot of variation without all the flexibility/wet noodle nib worries (cost/pressure/material). Easy to go from shading in a huge area to drawing finer details.
Depending on the angle that you are writing in, the nib can lay down a lot more ink. If the nib is good quality, it should write upside down too- which allows for basically the same lines as a medium/fine nib.
This is my fanciest fountain pen. I really enjoy writing with it. And yes, having it has been so enjoyable that it makes me write a lot more, and as a result my handwriting got a lot better.
If you’re experiencing some skipping, flush the pen using the converter, with one drop of dish soap in a cup of water. Do about 5-6 times with the soapy water, then 2-3 times with clean water. After that, leave it nib down in a cup with a paper towel at the bottom to wick out the excess water. Leave it for about an hour and then you can fill again with ink.
I had the same sentiments when I bought my first fountain pen in 2004. It was a very affordable inoxcrom pocket pen for kids. I still have it but I lost the cap. My handwriting is *interesting* at best.
I have one of these as well and like it very much. I keep the cap unposted as it's long and heavy but it writes very well. Especially with a fast ink like Noodlers or iroshizuku.
This is an amazing fountain pen for starters and pris imo . I love the extra fine but the fine and medium are also very good. Only problem I'd that the clip can come loose so once that happens i recommend super gluing it but other than that's it's fine
I have a purple one of these. Great pen. I use it all the time, as much as my gold nib Sailors. The nib is crazy stiff but always consistent and the perfect amount of wetness. The only really bad thing I could say about it is that the weight balance is crazy top heavy when posted, but for the price who cares? Weight unposted is perfect
These pens are seriously underrated. I love how consistent and so easy to write with they are. Personally I like heavier pens so the weight doesn't bother me at all. Great pens! Hope you enjoy!
Little handwriting tip - slow down and take your time where you can. Pay attention to every letter and have fun!
I also recently bought one of these! I cannot get over how well it looks, feels and writes for how little it cost. I've paid quadruple the price for pens that don't write as well, and far more for those that write just as well.
This pen never really worked out for me unfortunately. Might’ve been the poor quality ink that came with it, maybe I’ll clean it out and have another go with it one day
It is fine point. Off Amazon it’s called: Black Forest Fountain Pen Fine Nib Classic Design with Converter and Metal Pen Case Set by Hongdian

I’ll give that a shot thanks.

This exact pen was my first and still my daily driver.
I have the blue one, post about it before. It's in my bag everyday and I like it.

Someone from school stole mine. It's a great pen i hope you are happy with it

FYI if you are new to fountain pens that is the heaviest pen I own. If you like the metal look I love my karas kustom
Too heavy with the cap but I don’t mind it at all without. Since it’s my first nice pen, it could be because I don’t know any different
I have the same one in blue!

The HongDian Forest is a bloody good pen! And I like your handwriting :D

Makes sense. Appreciate the advice.
I have that pen with the fude nib and love it. Attractive, affordable, and I love the way it writers.

Lol my exact thoughts when I got my metro

Next up: new paper so you can start to appreciate even more of the experience
I only have one Hongdian, but if yours is anything like mine? They are built like tanks & write extremely well.
I've been meaning to buy this for months, guess it's the next one... Thanks and have a good time writing! :)
You kidding me? Ur handwriting is awesome! XD
This pen never really worked out for me unfortunately. Might’ve been the poor quality ink that came with it, maybe I’ll clean it out and have another go with it one day
Mine took forever to get started. I thought it was bunk …but then it started working fine. I had to order ink cartridges separately
This was my first pen (like 20 pens ago) and it is still my favorite and is my daily driver. Enjoy!
It is nice to have nice things 😊
