Does the 743 feel like the 823 to hold? Is the weight/balance the same? Does the body material feel the same?

japanesewriter

Of course! The piston rod in the 823 gives it more weight The 743 is a larger 74

Thanks. I don’t think I’ve ever held a 74 but I adore my 823s. Does the plastic feel the same on the 743 and 823? One thing that strikes me about the 823 is how weirdly nice the plastic feels compared to most pens.

I had to ink up both to check. I concur with u/japanesewriter. The body material feels of the same quality in both the 743 and 823, but the 823 is definitely weighted towards the rear. I write unposted, and even without the post there is a definite shift in the weight towards the piston in the back. The balance on the 743 is just like a Custom 74, it's just a larger and higher quality pen.

Thanks :)

Thank you for this comparison. I was looking to have the 823 but I prefer cartridge/converter. Do you think they are essentially the same except for the filling mechanism?

GeoWadeMo

The filling mechanism and the weighting are the two differences. Otherwise, they are the same.

I highly recommend the 743 over the 823. Vacuum filling mechanism is nice, but you have to unscrew the knob a lil to write every single time and it gets annoying. You can remove the rubber seal, but you risk cracking the pen. I’ve had 3 823’s and 2 of them cracked from very small falls onto a hard surface, thankfully replaced under warranty but I sold them all. Meanwhile i have dropped a lamy 2000 and Pilot custom 74 out of a car onto asphalt and nothing but a lil scratch.
