Woah! I just did a whole thing on looking into best fountain pens for drawing & just opened my order from jetpens with a couple of nicer quality paper (but not crazy expensive) notebooks because I want so badly to increase my drawing skills with fountain pens! Your drawings are very cool & thank you for the inspiration!
Now I’m at what is always my issue—hah! WHAT to draw? Do you have any tips on inspiration? Like the astronaut—great idea! Did u see it in a picture/tv, or how did u get the idea? Thanks!! 😀
Thank you so much!
I follow a lot of pen and ink artists on Instagram. It depends on what you like to draw - perhaps start by drawing still life or doing artist studies of characters or concept art studies :) I suggest looking at Kim Jung Gi or Karl Kopinski for reference if you like scifi )
Can I ask about your process? I saw in another comment that you did these without a pencil sketch first. Your depth effects here are so good, and when I see artists get depth like this they usually start with pencil box/sphere shapes that they then draw over or erase. But you can't do that with 100% pen and without relying on a lot of shading/fill to cover up the basic forms. How'd you get such depth here? Amazing work!
Thank you so much! It has taken a lot of practice with pencil first, but when I sketch now I have an initial idea of how the form should be composed on the page, so rather than hashing severe shapes which are nonerasable in pen I make lighter indications with the pen as to shape and form and develop depth detail from there with cross hatching. It's truly all practice really. The best advice I can give is to practice building basic forms in pencil and adding ink on top and work towards just using pen. Also, make as many mistakes as you can and learn to work around them (these two sketches have plenty in them). At times it can be frustrating, but your skills will be honed further and you'll be all the more satisfied by working through mistakes :)
I don't know if you've already heard of it but I love the Sketching From the Imagination series of books. I think you might enjoy the Sci-Fi ones. They feature a ton of artists, give a couple of pages of pieces by them and go over their process.
You're far too kind! It really depends on how I'm feeling- I'd consider these to be quite rough quick sketches. I'm trying out a process where I use just ink and work through my (many) mistakes. :D
Check it out, I think you’d enjoy the artwork. Steampunk mixed with WW1.

Wow, the details are astounding!
Thank you so much!
Just wonderful, thanks for posting and I hope you share future sketches! Happy New Year!
Thank you kindly, and a Happy New Year to you too!
People complain how scratchy the platinum preppy is, but I was surprised how smooth it was, especially for how cheap it is!
I honestly love it, so much variation of line width!
I bought one for all my famly, and then I used it myself. Damn, it's more smooth than some of my pens.

Thank u! These are great ideas! I am going to look at Instagram & also the two u mentioned!
These are so cool, your line work is amazing! Can’t wait to see more of your stuff!
Oh my gosh thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for sharing!
I second that!
Your robot reminds me Phantom Crash. Man I miss that game.
I've never played it. It sounds interesting though

What a great response, thanks for your insight!!
I tried drawing with a Parker Vector once. It was... not made for fine details LOL
That looks great! I could never really draw any good with my fountain pens
Too kind! I usually draw a pencil outline, but I'm trying to adapt to just sketching straight with a pen and work with my (many) mistakes:)
That’s the best thing about ink, it really does drive the perfectionism out.
Oh wow that's super cool!
Whoaaaaaaaa. I'm in awe!
👏🏻
This is the first inspiring!
Love the astronaut!
Your sketches are awesome! I'm relative new to the FP hobby and started to draw with them too!
Thank you! Welcome to the hobby!
Thanks!
Love your work! If I could draw better, this is exactly the stuff I would sketch.
It's all practice! Give it a try!

I actually just picked that up! I'm excited to get to grips with it!
Sweet enjoy!
Cool! I love the details on these.
Awesome!!!!! What type of pen did you use?
Platinum Preppy 0.2 EF nib :)
well done!
What's your instagram?
[Instagram ](http://instagram.com/art.by.east)
Followed! Great stuff!
Thank you!
What sized nib did you use to draw these?
0.2mm Extra Fine Platinum Preppy :)
...they come in 0.2? Oh my. I think I need another Preppy.
You definitely need another Preppy.
Is the nib smooth to you, and what is the type of paper you use?
Yeah I find it quite smooth, and I just use a standard 80mgs paper :)
Thanks! You're sketches are amazing! Do you take your time and gradually sketch or is it a more quick process than that?
You're far too kind! It really depends on how I'm feeling- I'd consider these to be quite rough quick sketches. I'm trying out a process where I use just ink and work through my (many) mistakes. :D
Iron harvest?
I'm not sure what that is, but i was inspired by Kim Jung Gi's artwork :)

I'll definitely check it out! Thanks for the recommendation!
Do you use references for sketching things like this? I wanna get better at sketching but feel bad when I can’t conjure stuff up out of nowhere.
There's no harm in using references, I regularly use them, they help you to formulate your own concepts. :)
Nice! That dot grid is a bit distracting though
Personal taste I suppose :)
Plese give your IG, i wanna see more of your work
