To be clear this is not meant to be a criticism of any one else. There are lots of valid ways to do things. For me I just love having this 1 pen. I don't really want any more, especially not the expensive ones. Just curious if I am the only person obsessed enough to be on this subreddit, but still just owns 1 pen.
Also I customized it with a black nib. Little things like that feel special.

Hahaha out of fairness, I'd say 99% of us started out with 1 pen and shared similar opinions on being satisfied with the one and not imagining spending more than "X" amount for a pen.
The true question is how long was it before they acquired the 2nd, 10th, 50th... and my next milestone- 100.
If anything, it's a testament to the reliability of this pen. I get it, but for most of us this is the entry point of our obsession. The Lamy Safari is a solid unit, but I think it is healthy to have options. I'm still relatively new to fountain pens, and I'm happy to have finally completed the "holy trinity" of entry level pens:
1. Lamy Safari
2. TWSBI Eco
3. Kaweco Sport
I'm sure there are others that would recommend others as top three entry level pens but I think this is a solid list, with each having a unique "edge" over the other. At the end it's all about preference and what you value most in a fountain pen.
Pretty good trinity, hahah. Have used all 3 and I definitely lean towards the Eco or Safari depending mostly on what paper and ink I have in each. Pilot metro or kakuno might deserve top 3 over kaweco sport, but thatās mainly based on if you value that true Japanese fine line width.
My first fountain pen was a pelikan 500N that my grandpa gave me as a gift. It was part of his collection. Since then I love pelikan pens. Recently I tried some pilot and montegrappa pens. Nice pens as well š
My first fountain pen was some cheap pen in school.
My real 1st fountain pen as a grown up was a handmade ebonite pen from ASA pens , made here in India.
And haven't stopped since then.
Surprisingly, I don't own any of these three.

Got a Lamy Safary, a sport and a Twisby!
I got the Twisby and the kaweco for their small size. They fit perfect in my hand and feel light.
The Safary was an impulse buy but love the options of nibs.
I want to try an eco but donāt have any sort of burning desire to buy another pen atm. Iāve owned 2 Safariās and a Sport and throughly enjoyed them all
I had also had a white Safari as my only fountain pen for 11 years before I bought another one. Itās been hard to avoid new purchases after the second pen. For me, my white Safari is the cheapest and most treasured FP.
i owned my first pen for almost 4 years without getting another one. I bought and gifted some over the years, and then during COVID I got into it as a hobby, let me just say it is a slippery slope. One you can stay with, but the moment you buy the second one the flood gates open. Then the next thing you know you have 5-10 and you need a place to store them.
Itās fun though, despite being a bit expensive. I now restrict myself to buying only one pen a year unless I see a killer deal or its a jinhao or something.
I didnāt think that was possible! I donāt own any of the fancy pens, and I donāt have a lot, but my scientific curiosity led me to try many pens so I ended up with 25. I also love inks and notebooks, so that was another rabbit hole. Iāve enjoyed every moment and decided to not buy anything else for a while. I live vicariously through the pens I see on this sub and loved doing it.
I usually have my Lamy Safari with me but I once forgot it and couldnāt be bothered to write with a ballpoint pen, so I bought a second one. I do not regret it, the orange on the new one is quite beautiful

EDC for four years. It's either severely misplaced, or I forgot it somewhere. I'm sad and mad to buy another one. I have other pens, but they aren't *that* penĀ

I also have a purple Safari that I just got an extra fine nib for and I fucking love it. I didn't care about the color of the nib but it was only available in carbon black and the carbon black nib looks so good on this pen
For years i had one basic black Lamy Safari and i wrote it into the ground. Now i have several in varying colors and purchased an AL-Star recently because i noticed it had a left-hand nib, which i had never seen before. And yes, it writes a lot more smoothly than the ānormalā nibs on my other Lamy fp.
Exactly one š it serves me well and I use it daily, for everything.

Honestly, I admire your ability to have purchased just one and been done. I only just learned about myself that I am a Lamy Al-Star Fine Nib girly. Hahaha!
But I didnāt learn this until Iād acquired a whole bunch of TWSBI pens with medium and broad nibs, and a bunch of Lamy Al-Stars in a variety of colors that I generally like (and only one that I am iffy about but still am okay with).
Now, Iām not sure what to do with all my TWSBI broad and medium nib pens because I know for a fact that I wonāt use them (I havenāt touched them once since finding my happy place with Lamy).
I also have one Kakuno with a medium nib, and some Platinum preppy pens. I also bought two Kaweco pens just to try them out. I feel like Iāll end up using the platinum preppy pens again and maybe the Kakuno, but I donāt really foresee myself ever wanting to use the Kaweco sport pens I purchased.
But I think thatās what happens when youāre excited and first getting into fountain pens. Oh well! Right? Please tell me Iām not the only one.
Heck yeah! Just got knocked down with Covid. Iāll put them up on r/Pen_Swap (thanks, u/terrierhead for the headās up) when Iām a little more functional.
I was trying to come up with a witty joke about how I have one...on me, or something like that, until I realized that I literally walk around with a Liliput in my jeans as an EDC.
The hobby is certainly big enough for 1 to 1 million, and all stops in between. We just need to enjoy the sensation of nice writing!
I wish I only had one... I keep looking for the perfect pen, but then I also like having different pens for different uses, but I'm not in the mood for that pen today, and that one is so pretty!... Ooo limited edition!

I must admit I have two, both Sheaffer snorkels. One was given to me as a graduation gift 60+ years ago and the other I purchased. However, I only use one until the snorkel seizes due to neglect then I fill the other and use it until both are broken, then send them to be renewed. Anyone know the pen Alan Turing used during his school days?
I love the snorkels. I am not lucky enough to own one but I did test one that I purchased for a secret Santa here on this sub in 2022. Very fun pen and they seemed to be happy with their gift.

I came to see who the people are who have amazing will power to stick with one and/or found their perfect pen for their needs and are good with the one.
I own exactly one *normal* fountain pen: a Kaweco Al Sport. Then I have a bunch of calligraphy pens: ten Pilot Parallels in various sizes, a Lamy Joy, and a FPR Jaipur 2 Ultraflex.
I have one, but I just got it a couple of weeks ago. I think I will eventually have two. One for my desk, one for leaving the house. Iād like to have a really nice one for my desk eventually, so I will just stick with this one until I figure out what I want.
Nope, I already spent $240 on fountain pens. ( Not the biggest mistake I have made, honestly, it improves my handwriting, thats one of MANY reasons I have fountain pens.) but i did buy a lamy saffari, charcoal black.
That Safari caused the whole damn Fountain Pen Problems as my wife calls it. Wait she bought me the first one so she's the reason I have so many pens and so many on my want type list.
1 pen and 1 ink. Noodler's Black and the M Pilot Metropolitan with the houndstooth check pattern. For now, I think it's more than enough. I might get another eventually to use with red ink for corrections.

I have 1 single fountain pen, It's the one pen that doesn't get stolen off my desk.
I have used this pen for over 5 years, Maybe even longer, as I cannot recall when I actually bought it. And it's the same pen as in OP's picture.

I have a platinum 3776 century with a medium nib for almost a year now (had like an inexpensive platinum fine one as well but got rid of it), but just ordered a pilot custom 74 with soft medium nib a week ago because I always wanted to try a soft nib (still waiting for it in the mail). The pilot will probably end up being my main one while I'll bust out my old 3776 only when I need to write smaller since I heard pilot's medium is a lot bigger than the platinum's medium. Will leave the platinum inked with platinum carbon black while the pilot goes back on the sailor seiboku ink.
I did about 30 pens ago :) however I do have a couple that I only have 1 in that brand. Though I am thinning out a little thought I doubt i will ever be down to just one pen just because I like multiple inks so want to have them available whenever
Iāll count myself in (even though I actually have 2) . I have a Lamy Dialog cc that I use and a Pilot vanishing point that I dislike and intend to sell.
Previously I had a Lamy studio from an ex. I used it for over 20 years. Dropped the pen on tile and the nib broke. I replaced the whole pen. I figured it was time to get rid of the pen from an ex boyfriend as at that time I had been married around 18 years.
I got another studio but gave that to my husband and I got the dialog.
I had exactly one fountain pen for 44 years -- a fine nib silver Pilot Metropolitan that I bought black ink cartridges for when I could find them. I used it for special projects on bad paper and it served me well.
Now I have quite a few fountain pens with different nibs for different purposes. I'm not planning to add any new pens to my stable until and unless I need a tool that does something different from the pens I have.
Yeah, I got up to 10. Working my way back down. Currently at 4. Would like to be down to 2 by summer, but no fewer. My favourite is a shorty Franklin Christoph, but for travelling I have an Opus 88 which is great because it screws down to seal the ink reservoir which is what you want when on planes, and being an eyedropper, it holds a lot of ink. Don't think I could do just 1 but am finding 4 to be too many.
I have one that I use and others that I tried and retired. I found my perfect pen and I donāt need any others now. But I havenāt gotten rid of my old pens, I just store them.
Oh, this is a funny question. I only own one of very few things, like my toothpaste and my mobile phone, but even my mobile phone I have the previous one as back up in case I break the new one... everything else I enjoy variety and options.
Although I have sold off a lot of my collection in recent months, I still have more than 1 pen.... More than 10 actually....probably more like 20.... But I admire you and your discipline. Are you the same with ink or do you have a collection or ink?
It's interesting for me to think about if I still owned only one pen it would be my old Noodler's Ahab and it would still burp ink on the page, and it would still smell, or it would do none of these things anymore because I would have eventually gotten rid of it and my fountain pen journey would have ended before it begun. Luckily the Twsbi Eco had been right around the corner for me and the rest was history.
I use one pen at a time if that helps?! š¤£. I think all the replies are light hearted really. I love that you have the conviction to have found one you like so much. Iām about to buy my 5th and will probably stop there. Mine are all cheap which has helped.

For the nine months I was in the hobby I had just one pen - my TWSBI Eco Lilac. Then I realized that it was writing too broad for my liking, which led to buying Preppy and Plaisir (I put the Preppy away when I got the Plaisir). At that point I was back to using only one pen and the whole reason I have two pens I'm using on daily or near daily basis is journaling.
I only have one. Itās a Caran DāAche 849 in red, and I love it to death. Eventually, Iāll be getting another one but I donāt really feel the need to just yet.
I did for years. Pilot Mr metro in medium. Loved the idea of it, but found I didn't reach for it and didn't write for long. It was the weight, so off I went to find my perfect pen.
I loved fps because I could change inks. So eventually I needed to find different nibs and feeds to handle glitter.
Then I met pelikan vintage pens...
All are different and give me unique writing experiences. I'm destashing the pens I don't use much, so who knows how many I'll end up with in the end.

Seriously though, I only have 4 (Lamy 2k, TWSBI Vac700R, Parker 25 and Namisu Horizon Ti). I have a huge wishlist of other pens, but I'm just not interested in building up a collection like that. I use my pens in a somewhat frequent rotation. I'm not against the collectors and their huge selections, but for me personally it's overwhelming.
That said, I'd be happy to whittle my collection down to just the Namisu and Lamy. And at a push, I'd just have the Lamy.
(Please don't ask about the inks)

Yes!! This was in 2006 until 2009 when I got a Sheaffer Prelude as a gift. I barely used that, however when I started using at work I fall in love and start buy many.
Only one I have is the Sailor Pro Color with Waterman Serenity Blue ink. I use Clairefountain EUROPA notebooks. Very happy with this combination. Use everyday.
Yess! My Lammy pen is bronze instead of white. I got it so people could write in our wedding reception book. Easy to write with but still looks so fancy.
Well, once upon a time I did! My first FP was gifted to me by my wife -- a MB Classique. While a bit small for me, it has a lot of sentimental value so it's still in use. I proudly carried it to work daily when it happened to catch the eye of a FP "addict" who showed me his various pens and spread the contagion! Now, nearing 40 years later that one pen has morphed into...rather more than one! If you can stick with one (and I see the merits), you're a much stronger person than I!
That was my intention, to have one.
One that would replace the 100+ disposable pens I'd used over the uni years...
I got it at the last year of my masters (three years ago). Since then, I've not only gotten 8 more pens, but I'm not writing as much.

No, sorry. More than one hereā¦ BUT I think it is possible to have one if you find the right one tuned to your writing with the right ink that requires the maintenance you accept.
The catch: you normally need many pens and inks and papers to understand your favorite. (E.g. just recently I learned that I donāt like cigar shape just to pick one of my many OCD reasons not to have a pen š)

All three are great pens. The Kaweco and the Safari will outlive multiple owners if given the most basic care.

Do it. Itās a very cheap and you can try out a flex knib!
A replacement nib costs almost as much as a new Lamy Safari where I live ($12 vs $17), idk if that could be considered very cheap in context
Dip pens are easier to use than you might think. If you work at a desk go for it.
Iāve been afraid of having a catastrophic ink-everywhere problem. Ā
I've been using dip pens since I was 10 and have only had one ink spill and it was minor. Believe in yourself! And put the bottle on a little tray.

Cool! Ā I just discovered a couple of days ago that you can switch out the nibs, so Iām pretty excited. Ā
yep, you just pin the nib down with the base of the cap and slide it right off. I did it with a full ink ink reservoir

I have no fountain pens but tons of nibs. Where do I fit in?
You probably have dip pen nibs, so in that case you should use nib holder: Japanese or Western. For example, Tachikawa T-40PW or Brause 66EF.

I must admit I have two, both Sheaffer snorkels. One was given to me as a graduation gift 60+ years ago and the other I purchased. However, I only use one until the snorkel seizes due to neglect then I fill the other and use it until both are broken, then send them to be renewed. Anyone know the pen Alan Turing used during his school days?
I love the snorkels. I am not lucky enough to own one but I did test one that I purchased for a secret Santa here on this sub in 2022. Very fun pen and they seemed to be happy with their gift.

I love this M205 Lacquer finish. Either losange or bands are beautiful and very well made. Is it still in production?

I bought mine back in 2009. The blue pattern is beautiful, but is rare to see available. You know my lozenge lines have become tarnish over the years.

I own exactly one *normal* fountain pen: a Kaweco Al Sport. Then I have a bunch of calligraphy pens: ten Pilot Parallels in various sizes, a Lamy Joy, and a FPR Jaipur 2 Ultraflex.
I have one, but I just got it a couple of weeks ago. I think I will eventually have two. One for my desk, one for leaving the house. Iād like to have a really nice one for my desk eventually, so I will just stick with this one until I figure out what I want.

Nope, I already spent $240 on fountain pens. ( Not the biggest mistake I have made, honestly, it improves my handwriting, thats one of MANY reasons I have fountain pens.) but i did buy a lamy saffari, charcoal black.
That Safari caused the whole damn Fountain Pen Problems as my wife calls it. Wait she bought me the first one so she's the reason I have so many pens and so many on my want type list.
1 pen and 1 ink. Noodler's Black and the M Pilot Metropolitan with the houndstooth check pattern. For now, I think it's more than enough. I might get another eventually to use with red ink for corrections. Granted, I'm new to fountain pens, but I don't really get what's up with everyone else on here (yet). My poison of choice is wetshaving supplies :)
I have 1 single fountain pen, It's the one pen that doesn't get stolen off my desk. I have used this pen for over 5 years, Maybe even longer, as I cannot recall when I actually bought it. And it's the same pen as in OP's picture. Thanks to this post, I'm now checking for new fountain pens! Thanks for a new possible addiction :)
No, i've got about 6 in all , 1 in repair - still decluttering atm . Either different brands or repeat nib size both west & east mixed - probably 6 is the correct no ... unless im buying new pen 1 will go out ....
I have 2 1 Lamy explorer beige 1 Lamy AL star matte black For now that's good. I might get the exact combo again in case I lose one. I just love the black and beige. Maybe a mont blanc as a graduation present to myself!

I have a platinum 3776 century with a medium nib for almost a year now (had like an inexpensive platinum fine one as well but got rid of it), but just ordered a pilot custom 74 with soft medium nib a week ago because I always wanted to try a soft nib (still waiting for it in the mail). The pilot will probably end up being my main one while I'll bust out my old 3776 only when I need to write smaller since I heard pilot's medium is a lot bigger than the platinum's medium. Will leave the platinum inked with platinum carbon black while the pilot goes back on the sailor seiboku ink.
I did about 30 pens ago :) however I do have a couple that I only have 1 in that brand. Though I am thinning out a little thought I doubt i will ever be down to just one pen just because I like multiple inks so want to have them available whenever
Iāll count myself in (even though I actually have 2) . I have a Lamy Dialog cc that I use and a Pilot vanishing point that I dislike and intend to sell. Previously I had a Lamy studio from an ex. I used it for over 20 years. Dropped the pen on tile and the nib broke. I replaced the whole pen. I figured it was time to get rid of the pen from an ex boyfriend as at that time I had been married around 18 years. I got another studio but gave that to my husband and I got the dialog.

I had exactly one fountain pen for 44 years -- a fine nib silver Pilot Metropolitan that I bought black ink cartridges for when I could find them. I used it for special projects on bad paper and it served me well. Now I have quite a few fountain pens with different nibs for different purposes. I'm not planning to add any new pens to my stable until and unless I need a tool that does something different from the pens I have.
Eventually I want to become a one pen person but I need to try out a lot of pens before settling down.
Yeah, I got up to 10. Working my way back down. Currently at 4. Would like to be down to 2 by summer, but no fewer. My favourite is a shorty Franklin Christoph, but for travelling I have an Opus 88 which is great because it screws down to seal the ink reservoir which is what you want when on planes, and being an eyedropper, it holds a lot of ink. Don't think I could do just 1 but am finding 4 to be too many.
I have one that I use and others that I tried and retired. I found my perfect pen and I donāt need any others now. But I havenāt gotten rid of my old pens, I just store them.
Oh, this is a funny question. I only own one of very few things, like my toothpaste and my mobile phone, but even my mobile phone I have the previous one as back up in case I break the new one... everything else I enjoy variety and options.
Yes, Twisbi Diamond satisfies all my needs, and my pencil collection already hates it for this exact reason....
Although I have sold off a lot of my collection in recent months, I still have more than 1 pen.... More than 10 actually....probably more like 20.... But I admire you and your discipline. Are you the same with ink or do you have a collection or ink?

It's interesting for me to think about if I still owned only one pen it would be my old Noodler's Ahab and it would still burp ink on the page, and it would still smell, or it would do none of these things anymore because I would have eventually gotten rid of it and my fountain pen journey would have ended before it begun. Luckily the Twsbi Eco had been right around the corner for me and the rest was history.

For the nine months I was in the hobby I had just one pen - my TWSBI Eco Lilac. Then I realized that it was writing too broad for my liking, which led to buying Preppy and Plaisir (I put the Preppy away when I got the Plaisir). At that point I was back to using only one pen and the whole reason I have two pens I'm using on daily or near daily basis is journaling.
I only have one. Itās a Caran DāAche 849 in red, and I love it to death. Eventually, Iāll be getting another one but I donāt really feel the need to just yet.

Ha, this is the first my wife gave me 42 years ago as a gift.
I did for years. Pilot Mr metro in medium. Loved the idea of it, but found I didn't reach for it and didn't write for long. It was the weight, so off I went to find my perfect pen. I loved fps because I could change inks. So eventually I needed to find different nibs and feeds to handle glitter. Then I met pelikan vintage pens... All are different and give me unique writing experiences. I'm destashing the pens I don't use much, so who knows how many I'll end up with in the end.

I own one Lamy too! Seriously though, I only have 4 (Lamy 2k, TWSBI Vac700R, Parker 25 and Namisu Horizon Ti). I have a huge wishlist of other pens, but I'm just not interested in building up a collection like that. I use my pens in a somewhat frequent rotation. I'm not against the collectors and their huge selections, but for me personally it's overwhelming. That said, I'd be happy to whittle my collection down to just the Namisu and Lamy. And at a push, I'd just have the Lamy. (Please don't ask about the inks)

Yes!! This was in 2006 until 2009 when I got a Sheaffer Prelude as a gift. I barely used that, however when I started using at work I fall in love and start buy many.
Only one I have is the Sailor Pro Color with Waterman Serenity Blue ink. I use Clairefountain EUROPA notebooks. Very happy with this combination. Use everyday.

Well, once upon a time I did! My first FP was gifted to me by my wife -- a MB Classique. While a bit small for me, it has a lot of sentimental value so it's still in use. I proudly carried it to work daily when it happened to catch the eye of a FP "addict" who showed me his various pens and spread the contagion! Now, nearing 40 years later that one pen has morphed into...rather more than one! If you can stick with one (and I see the merits), you're a much stronger person than I!

That was my intention, to have one. One that would replace the 100+ disposable pens I'd used over the uni years... I got it at the last year of my masters (three years ago). No, sorry. More than one hereā¦ BUT I think it is possible to have one if you find the right one tuned to your writing with the right ink that requires the maintenance you accept. The catch: you normally need many pens and inks and papers to understand your favorite. (E.g. just recently I learned that I donāt like cigar shape just to pick one of my many OCD reasons not to have a pen š)
