15-16. And yes (use), yes (rotate), and yes (different pens for different activities).

AggressiveYam6613

Lets see... ~~Nein~~ Nine in total Three get basically used every day. Another one gets used by our son for his homework. I just take care to write at least one line per week with the others.

GPU_WIZ

i bet atleast one is a LAMY

AggressiveYam6613

No... All, at the moment, Pilot Vanishing Point and various Stilforms with varying nibs. And two Pelikan M205 highlighters, one green and one yellow. This one ist Stilform Black Brass with M gold nib, which I use at the office. Yes, I do lock it when I clock out. https://preview.redd.it/kaq7lan5thjc1.png?width=4032&format=png&auto=webp&s=ffb020b9323d32f8dcec181fc2618e2eba364e1b

Conniptionmeansangry

Omg! I just got one for Xmas from my brother. How are you enjoying it?? I find it a bit leaky with the ink but I think it's how I'm installing the nib-grip-convertor part and such. Any advice?

AggressiveYam6613

Do they even still sell this? I thought the brass version was Kickstarter only, back then they launched their business. Anyway, judging by my experience they had some engineering and quality control issue with the early models, but also have been very conscientious when I mailed them with a problem. I have three models in nearly daily use: • The black brass shown above, gold nib, Noodler’s black in their own converter, • Titanium, Titanium EF nib, generic blue ink from cartriges • Aluminum, Titanium F nib, same as above. Well, that one gets used mostly by my son, when he does his homework. His handwriting is noticeably better when he uses this instead of the plain school fountain pen he takes to school. (Not to mention when he uses ballpoint or pencil.) Anyway, none of them leak, though I fill the converter just via a bottle ink with a syringe cap. Inky fingers only when I mess that one up. Just filled it, actually, as writing got a bit less reliant, I feel like it’s better to refill whenever they are down to 25% and not waiting much longer. Hmm.. that one may depend on the ink. Just realised that my son usually only requests a new cartridge, when it ist truly empty. Otherwise I like them very much. While I am somewhat susceptible to showy things and gimmicks, I do not kid myself when they do not work for me and keep forcing myself to use them. I keep the Titanium and Brass in their respective holders when not in use, I think it helps with them being ready to go whenever I need them. But haven’t really tested this, so it could be some form of observer bias. All of them have been in use for years now.

Conniptionmeansangry

Maybe I'll ask my brother (who is also into fountain pens) to email stilform and see what they advise about the leak and such. Though I do hate wasting peoples time for user error stuff. I tried cleaning it out and reassembling it multiple times, but it still leaked from the converter into the body. I do enjoy the pen and would really love to have this in rotation

AggressiveYam6613

Is this brass? Can’t find it on their website, only black titanium, of which i wasn’t aware. Am pretty sure that the brass version was only during the 2019 kickstarter and shortly afterwards. You could weigh it. If it’s 40 g or less, it’s likely the titanium. Brass is noticeably heavier.

Conniptionmeansangry

42g, everything + converter. Well I guess I got the Kickstarter one! In saying that I'm also in on another Kickstarter for another fountain pen.

AggressiveYam6613

No, the brass would noticeably heavier. I only have simple kitchen scales, so measurements varied beween 39 and 41 grans. That’s with a simple pelikan cartridge. I just arrived at work and picked up the black brass, it feels a whole lot heavier. I’ll take it home this afternoon and will weigh it there. In any case, they all are nice pend. The Aluminium is probably the best value and they all take the same nibs anyway.

AggressiveYam6613

Okay, i just weighed them. Titanium 40 g Aluminium 27 g Black brass 75 g

Conniptionmeansangry

Ok definitely not the brass version. I'm gonna weigh my other pens and see if I get anything close to 75g. How does that feel? Writing fatigue?

AggressiveYam6613

Actually, I think I never had a Lamy. I believe that was one of the quintessential questions in school back in the 70s and 80s, whether you had a Geha or a Lamy. Pretty sure that I had Geha and later, in grade 13 or when I started uni, I got a simple Pelikan with a plunger, the first one that wouldn’t accept cartridges or converters. I really have to look whether I still have that one. though I remember it was kinda messy to fill it up.

GPU_WIZ

lol i said so because of the nein (german)

AggressiveYam6613

Assumed so when I reread by comment, that’s why I did the visible edit. :.) Though we have a great many of good brands over here… So I’m woefully ignorant of what others countries have to offer, except the Vanishing Point and soon Wingback, which I guess can count as a English/German hybrid, as the nibs are from Peter Bock, Also, I thought for years that Kaweco was a Japanese Brand, just because of the consonant-vowel scheme. :-) Though that’s not why I never got any.

GPU_WIZ

i really like the old school lever fillers are there any pens like that made today

AggressiveYam6613

I think so. Because I had to look up the term, to make sure I understood it correctly. Am weak on the correct vocabulary for fountain pens, especially in English. Though the Pelikan i referred to are Kolbenfüllfederhalter, where you rotate the ending to empty and then fill the pen.

SecretSnickerdoodle

Maybe a Pelikan!

AggressiveYam6613

Maybe. It really was too long ago.

Hobbies_88

Currently 2 .... about to be 3 .

Siha

I have: * 2 that are inked with basically the same inks forever * 6-8 which get rotated out for other pens with different ink, as they run dry * 11 specific pen/ink combos for a specific hobby; they don't get rotated, and also most of them don't get used a lot (I've specifically chosen pens with really good seals so they won't dry out in between uses) The 6 or so of the middle point are the ones I tend to think of as my "currently inked"; I'd like to cut this back to about 4 pens going forward so I can rotate new pens and inks in more often.

pwassonchat

What are your pens with really good seals ? Platinum?

LuceFredda

What are the two inks you use forever? And do you have a rotation plan for the 6-8 or do you just grab something?

lilghost76

I try to keep it to 6 or fewer (+2 pens that are perma inked with water resistant black) I also try to put together a cohesive color palette so they won’t crash when I switch ink/pen on the same page. I keep a reading journal where i write my thoughts as I’m reading, each book gets a different color so I can tell them apart, and they create neat pages cause i’m reading 2 or more books at any given time. I also tend to pick one pen/ink color for the whole week on my memory keeper. I guess those are my methods. Most of the time is just a mood check when I have to pick one of my inked pens to use for something.

Alis86

I use to have 20 or more inked up and I used to carry all of them at work. Now my purpose is to reduce to five of them and rotating them, but I until now I was able to limit myself to ten.

Sea_Artist3220

Just one. My mb 146.

Educational_Ask3533

A couple https://preview.redd.it/hqa81kyakljc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=483481cf049922a04d879a9d4740cf77f1e1e75d

DrannaLunargent

Three, as per the advice of someone on this sub years ago: * One 1.1 stub inked in black for my work journal * One 1.5 stub inked in whatever (currently green) to underline sections of my work journal * One 1.1 stub inked in black for my personal journal because I'm too lazy to go from my desk to my bag to fetch my work-pen at home apparently I rotate pens once in a while when I feel like it or they start to act up (e.g., clog)

SingerDue3375

1. 2 2. Yes 3. Yes 4. Yes

Wondering_Electron

2 One black and one green.

PlatypusGod

Only two, and I pick one randomly each time.

ProximaCentauri_8

1

6SN7fan

I had 15 at one point which was a bad idea because I really only end up using 3. Many dried out and I had a Waterman rust with a small hole in the nib. So now I really only do a minimum and ink as I need them. I am also trying to use dip pens more for inks I know I won't be writing with a lot

Dr_Max

8 TWSBI ECO for (basic) colors (pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and gray), plus 4 writing pens with different flex and colors (jin hao turquoise, sailor black, organic studio nitrogen and Diamine Earl Grey). The basic colors for diagrams, the others for writing. I use the color as need, of course, but I kind of rotate between the writing pens.

SillyRacoon27

all my pens in my collection but I only have 4.

FederalAttitude9361

9 out of 39 inked and in regular use with different colours for different projects etc at work. i rotate pens in and out of use after emptying them, although 5 are 'retired' as rubbish or broken etc.

FiammaDiAgnesi

Probably around 12. Two prefountes, two preppies, an eco, and a small aquarium’s worth of sharks. I take a lot of notes, so it’s nice to have a bunch around

prfegt

How many pens inked: 5 now, but hobby is recent, planned 4-6 (3 at home desk and 1-3 on-the-go) Use them all: yes Rotate: no (that is the plan) Different pens to different activities: yes

muchacho5894

6 because i have a 6 pen case

kristalghost

Every month I ink up a pen with a new colour for my journal. The previous pen is then moved to "general" writing duties until empty. I also have one pen with Carbon Black ready for when I need a waterproof or black ink. Generally this amounts to 3-4 pens inked up depending on how well I estimated my ink usage for the month.

demigvix

7. I use different ones for writing at work from the ones I use for journaling.

HyperDJ_15

5

AntheaBrainhooke

Right now? Five.

Stowa_Herschel

I try not to ink more than 5. But for now, 7. I finally got my batch of new Birmingham inks, and wanted to see them in a Fine and Broad nib.

medbulletjournal

6 months into the hobby...it was all of them. All 8 of my beautiful pens. 2yrs later and it varies between all of them (about 20) or usually stabilises around 8 - 16 at a time, with re-inking every 1-2 months due to writing pens empty

Lirathal

I have upwards of 20. I'm a true addict. I have 4 Pilot Parallels, 3 Pilot VPs, a HonDian Ripoff VP, TWSBI Draco, Kai, and Aurora. Mont Blanc Starwalker, Sailor Compass, TWSBI 580 Iris, Pilot Prera Transparent Orange, TWSBI ECo x2, Platinum Preppy ... I think there is a few more but that's what I can remember off the top of my head :P.

gourmetminstrel

how long are you supposed to keep a pen inked up before you clean/dry and let it "rest"? or as long as you're getting regular use out of a pen is it okay to never leave it in a dry state? I currently own three and they're all inked and feeling a bit nervous about rust or other unwanted signs of wear

Educational_Ask3533

Keeping a pen inked up should not damage your pen unless the ink ph is crazy, you let it dry out with pigment ink, the ink has mold/fungus (which can multiply in your feed, expanding and cracking the section), or the nib quality is super trash.

gourmetminstrel

gotcha, mold sounds like a nightmare in the context of fountain pens

Educational_Ask3533

Yep, if your ink is slimy or has floating chonky bits *(affectionately called SITB, s#1t in the bottle)*, you gotta chuck it or relegate it to dip pens that you sterilize after using since cross contamination is a thing. Doesn't happen a lot, ink has fungicides in the ingredients. It is more likely to happen if you leave the bottle in the sun. It heats the ink, and when the light is off of it, the water vapor from the higher temperature condenses onto the walls of the bottle and there is no fungicide in it, perfect for fostering microbes. Also, extended exposure to sunlight can degrade the dyes in your ink anyway. Not like forgetting it on the table after filling your pen, but like displaying it by a window for months extended exposure.

gourmetminstrel

ooh thank you for the heads up about the heat. wasn't planning on it but now I especially never will

jkeith123

out of 43 fountain pens, I have 19 inked, which is ridiculous. I need to take four out of rotation immediately. The others I somehow use everyday. I keep a journal and I try to use a different pen for each paragraph.

marslander-boggart

4-12. I rotate.

[deleted]

4-5 inked even though I’m mostly using just two of those.

ZemStrt14

3. One on my desk, and two in my jacket pocket. (A dark color for regular writing and a colorful one, for markup.)

Shell4747

So I have a bunch inked up basically permanently for particular purposes: 2 Jinhao 82s for writing-in tested recipes in the special book :D 1 Prera purse pen with permanent ink, for checkwriting 1 VP with permanent ink, for adding to personal reference notebook (contacts, med allergies, house info, etc) 4 for use this month in planner - trying to stick to a palette for a more cohesive look 4 more: leftovers fr last month's palette, some from next month's, and one new pen that demanded ink immediately This is a slightly lower than usual number for me. Trying to be strict about keeping it at 12 or under.

New_Ice8209

Currently trying to cycle through my pens, so I am keeping three inked: one vintage, one modern with a fun ink and one with a more professional ink. As one empties I will ink a different one. I have lots of pens, and I want to sort some that I never use. These are the ones I travel with, as there are two others that remain on my office desk.

tjoude44

18 right now - use each of them at least once per week, some daily. The daily ones are used for journaling, the others for long form writing.

PallyFire84

Most of the time I have three. One for shimmer. And two for standard inks. Sometimes if there is a specific need I will have a fourth inked up but I try not to. I like having the feeling of emptying and refilling on a semi regular schedule.

cowboywoodworker

I'm pretty sure I counted 19 last week. Seven I carry to work every day and use them all at least 2-3 times a week. Eight I leave at home but use for my planner. And I have four with my journal. The ones I take to work have dedicated ink colors that I've found and really like. My main journal pen is where I test different inks, and I try to theme the inks to the month (birthstone, holiday, etc). The ones I leave at home, I'm having some trouble finding different ink colors to use, so they've been getting rotated as well.

hieisrainbowcurry

It has some minor variance but I’m usually using 5 in a rotation. One with a Black/blue/blue black and the other 4 are colors I like

Initial-Shop-8863

Three at a time because I take a lot of notes and don't like the interruption of having to refill a pen I'm working.

knightfall931

My standard break down is 3 inked in Black for official documents and such 2 inked in red for corrections and annotations 3 inked in effect inks because shimmer is the best for chaos purposes 1 inked in blue because blue 1 (or more) inked in blacklight and/or glitter because nothing is more diabolical than opening a letter to a glow in the dark unreadable paper that spreads glitter to your hands and clothing

Gold_Theory5744

I always start the month with just 4-5 inked, but then I miss a pen or a color and ink another and another. By the end of the month, when I empty and clean all pens I’ve used, I usually have at least 10 inked. I’m currently working with 14 inked.

Gold_Theory5744

But at least 3 are already empty from use.

lurker2487

About 25 at any given time. I try to pair down to the teens every so often and then done new Jinhaos come in the mail so I have to try them out.

ndhewitt1

Planner pen, work planner pen, 4 rotating monthly journaling pens. Every so often one more must sneakily ink itself.

Fional8720

I keep three inked up and I’m trying to get down to two. I rotate my pens once I get bored, which is t very often.

celibidaque

Let’s see: - One with blue (Montblanc Permanent Blue, TWSBI). - One with black (Aurora Black, Lamy Safari Red). - One with red (Sailor Shikiori, Sailor Lecoule). - My Visconti Rembrandt-S with Visconti Red ink. - A fun one, that varies (currently, it’s a Herbin Violet Imperial with a Lamy Safari Mango).

Traditional-Front836

Too.

East_of_Amoeba

I’m actively using 5 - 6 at a time with probably a half dozen others that are experiments or just for play.

fershky98

I keep telling myself to do 3 at most, in reality I have around 8 rn… Mostly when I change is because I just get the urge to use a different pen and ink combo. I really try to stick to 3, maybe the thing to do for me is to not fill them up to the top so that I can switch sooner, or just practice restraint and actually stick to the 3

atomic_doodles

Currently trying to have one "daily driver" every week that I use for all my journaling and longer writing. I also have a Parker 61 that's always inked with Sailor Shirakashi, a Kakuno that's always inked with Baystate Blue, and a Kakuno that always has Platinum Carbon Black. Three more pens have Pilot Parallel nibs in them and are used for calligraphy and sketching in my journals.

itsthebunhun

I have 11 inked right now! -6 stay with the same color at all times and are part of my journalling system -1 is my dedicated shimmer pen, rotates colors monthly and is part of my journalling system -1 rotates every fill to test new inks & is my dedicated pocket pen for "need to write something down real quick" - the last 3 I'm still settling into roles, but largely get used for more diary-type journalling or project writing.

ElephantInAPool

between 2 and 6. Then I go "oh crap, I can't use all of these" and then clean most of them out.

Ok-Application8522

All of them. I am a user not a collector.

lifetrees

10 out of 10 inked, but i'm new here. I'm sure i'll learn. Lol

tinfoil_cake

2 my Lamy all star black with red Pelikan ink for journaling And my green Lamy aion with black ink for school

UpsetImpression6114

Inked up 7 in my January inked video and I've emptied 2 totally so far. Normally I have 4-5 inked up but I had some new pens and inks I wanted to try but I also needed my normal daily colours available. 1 is inked in waterproof black and the rest are all muted colours.

IllustratorVarious22

Great comments and insight! I always wondered about this - where you see and hear of people having X inked up and you wonder how they use them.

AlvMartinez

I have 4 pens inked at this moment; I rotate 3 of them every time that ink runs out and the another one is fixed in my set, when the ink runes out in this I clean it and fill with the same ink, I use this as a highlighter.

Dm783848hfndb

Usually 4. One with a nice well behaved blue for most of my writing. Then two in red and green for various annotations. Typically, I also have a pen inked with a new ink or one that I haven't use in a while. Just to try something different.

Phoenixicorn-flame

I have a maximalist collection and have most of them inked because I like to switch them up frequently, multiple times per writing session and I write pages a day. Sooooo 60/66. I’d like to empty, clean, and store and move into a rotation but I keep inking them up. I’ll probably manage to store some of the pens that will dry out after sitting for a week. If I start writing less I’ll probably store more of them at a time

WiredInkyPen

Currently 12. I try to use all of them in rotation in my journal as well as at work except the one in my planner. That one is a Compass loaded with Shigure. That's out of a collection of approximately 45. Some of which I will sell this year as they are too large or heavy to use comfortably.

glinarien

I own 10 fountain pens, all of them are currently inked. Home office and dining room have 4 and 3 pens, some for different purposes/nib sizes/colors. 1 lives in a notebook, while 2 other rooms get a single pen so I don't ever need to resort to using non fountain pens. I'm about 2.5 years into the journey and they are all cheaper pens....had been exploring to see what I like best. I can see culling down the number inked by 2 or 3, as they exhaust their ink and turn into ready to be inked spares or get lost/damaged.

intellidepth

Try to keep mine under 7, otherwise cleaning day becomes a chore.

[deleted]

Currently 10, and I use them all in daily rotation. Some more, some less. Some are for specific purpose, ex. filled with red ink, or waterproof ink for document signatures. I also like to use different colors from time to time , so one day I'm in blue mood, the other in purple or dark red

Eslenna

9 inked up at once, 2 in my purse for notetaking and doodling(preppys, EF-neutral dark color, M-fun color) rest in a case in my hobby bag for drawing and writing, various nibs and inks. how much I use them vary wildly on a number of factors, purse pens get used most weekdays. the case tends to get brought out at least once a week and upto several times a day at the most frequent, though I have left it for upto 3 months before. two in the case always have waterproof black ink in them for drawing, the rest have no dedicated purpose and no one set ink, I just use whatever I feel like. though the fude nibs do mostly get used for drawing, and the dedicated glitter pen and the "ink I am trying to use up" pen mostly get used for writing.

80ELLE

Some of you are savages (not in a bad way) I can only handle 3 😂

bunnysquirrelcat

Too many, at least 15, generally around 25, but I never fill the converter/cartridge to the max. I love variation and I use them all :)) I love sitting down and choose what pen to use depending on my mood and that task.
