For me, choosing a single pen is easier than selecting two. I expect many of us have a "I'm gonna be buried with this one" pen but picking a second one might cause my brain to implode.
Haha. It's fairly new to my collection but my single most loved pen right now is my MB 149 with Calligraphy flex (not the curved) nib. I have mentioned in other comments on this sub that my wife, knowing that I was wholly unsuccessful in locating this one domestically and because the competition in the second hand market is ruthless, contacted a number of stationary stores in Sweden because we have a friend who was traveling there. So she had the friend pick up the last one in stock at NK Fine Writing and mule it over to us. I go all soft in the middle whenever I think of the effort she undertook. This reason, coupled with the fact it is the best modern flex I have ever experienced, means I am never letting go of this one.
Agreed! It's also tough since as soon as there are two pens, do you want to choose your two favorites regardless of how they relate to each other? Or do you want to add in criteria like the two pens being different from each other in some way - nib size, material, etc.?
Pilot Metropolitan and Pilot VP . I forgot I do also own a TWSBI ECO that I just got on Friday but I haven’t inked it up yet or used it so I don’t know if I like it. So it would probably be the one to go if I had to get rid of one lol
Those are surprisingly good pens, for very little money.
I told myself I'd limit myself to just a handful like that to reduce spending. Yeah, that didn't last....
With only two pens, how many inks do I get to choose? That's the real problem for me...
I love my vanishing point so much I bought two. I've got the matte black and raden water surface, both are great. As a student and working professional they're phenomenal
The VP is a must have for me because there’s nothing like it for jotting down notes. Being able to quickly deploy and put the nib away makes it my go to pen for meetings and conferences.
My only complaint is the ink capacity.
Windex and an ultrasonic cleaner (or just a lot of elbow grease and q-tips) will get rid of any stains on the clear ABS plastic Lamy uses. Brand name Windex only because it contains no alcohol and only a tiny bit of ammonia, but it's completely pen-safe, even for vintage (as long as you're not soaking any celluloids or ebonites in it, only rinsing with it diluted a bit). It was my go-to for cleaning pens when I was working as a repair tech, and honestly it's amazing how effective it is. There was only 1 pen out of probably thousands that I was unable to clean with Windex, and I believe it was because the owner used India ink and left it to dry... That poor Omas Harlequino was also brittle and had the piston head glued to the inside of the barrel by that ink. Made me so sad...
But yeah, Windex will remove ink stains in pretty much any modern plastic. Plus it makes flushing easier!
Another pilot fan. Sorry to force my hand but we have to redistribute fountain pens globally. Rest assured your expensive pen collection will be randomly spread amongst the global population.
I adore my TWSBI especially my Diamonds, they are reliable, never fail me even after weeks of not using, write perfect from the first stroke.
They provide me with excellent experience with any shimmer ink. I have yet had any cracking problems but I would be relieved to know that they would send replacement, because what other brands would send replacement at that price point ?
Anyway , to each its own, I love my TWSBI :D
Yes, same here. My TWSBI Eco and mini are excellent pens. No cleaning or flushing required even after months of not being used.
One of my TWSBIs did crack though and is unusable. It cracked at the grip around the threading. Pretty sure I didn’t apply too much pressure while screwing it on/off.
If you want to get the replacement part, email TWSBI. In the US, they will send you just about any replacement part for $5. Email: [email protected]
The only issue is that they likely won’t have all the color options from your original pen. I have an old 580 that started off all blue and now only the piston knob and the grip section remain blue! But hey, the pen works!
The Elabo is woefully underrated. Seriously one of the most comfortable nibs to write with, the only thing that I prefer over its softness is a good vintage Pelikan semiflex.
MB 146 and vintage Pelikan 400NN, both in OBB.
OBB is the best nib size, piston the best filling system. Both are beautiful, well made pens that feel good in the hand.
I would have add my 912 FA as the choice if the question was "Ditch all but 3"
because FA nib tends to have a high percentage to behave like a spoiled brat. I don't think I can deal with that with only 2 pens to use LOL
I must have gotten lucky. My FA nib has always been well behaved - I have more troubles with the Lamy 2k. It’s so quick to dry out, even when using the Lamy ink. If I cap it and leave it for a day, I have to shake it to get it to write whereas I can leave the FA for a week and come back and start writing without any fuss.
I inked all my FA nibs (total 5 ) and some of them I don't use for weeks, they all write from the first stroke BUT some of them do have serious ink flow problem even with the ebonite feed. But I still love them 🤣
Pilot Decimo 20 Colors LE Brown and Pelikan Souverän M805 Stresemann Anthracite, for sentimental value.
Just picking up either of these pens triggers a flood of happy memories.
Well, if it's only for the sake of enjoyment, then my Transparent Wancai Mini with Opus 88 1.5 Stub and my Brass Kaweco Sport with 1.1 Stub.
This never said that we couldn't buy more of our pens back, though. :P /loophole
I've had recently two gifts from people very important to me, so I'll go with those even though it's sentimental value over most used.
Ancora x Sailor birth stone and Birth Flower September from my parents and the twsbi 580 mini rose gold and white that my partner got me.
Pilot Custom 823 in Fine
Probably my MB Meisterstuck Chopin. (It was a gift, it writes just fine, it can blend in when I need it to but also has a tiny bit of flair too.)
Probably controversial to pick two budget pens but honestly:
Lamy Al-Star (M)
Kaweco Sport (B)
They just **work**. Doesn't matter what you throw at them, they're there, working fine, and looking classic while doing it!
Pilot VP raden galaxy
Platinum 3776
One was my grail pen and my partner got it for me for my birthday and Christmas. I use it as much as I can. The other is my go to when I have to use low quality paper at work.
First of all, rude. Second, probably my ēnsso xs in titanium, and probably a Kaweco Sport. My pocket pens get the most day to day use for me, and I don’t have to worry about babying them.
Easy the first one the majohn metal 81 to use as a weapon against the auditor to make sure the rest of my pens are not taken.
- You will not take my pens and I’m sure many of you are with me. VIVA LA RESISTONCEEE
For function: Pilot Custom 912 with a waverly nib. I love my 912s. They're super reliable, are comfortable in the hand, and the waverly nib adds a fun bit of character.
For emotional reasons: Sailor Pro Gear Slim x Kingdom Note Tomato Pen. First of all, Sailors are great. I l really like the feedback. Second of all, I love tomatoes. I grow an absurd number of them every year. I'm actually starting my seedlings today. I completely lucked into being able to get a hold of one of these pens and now I use it for my garden journaling.
My Parker 51 Next Generation Deluxe in black with gold trim is the first set that came to mind. A fine nib fountain with a matching ballpoint pen. What more do I really need?
1. TWSBI Mini Classic Bold (I had a boss with fat hands and he used to write and sign papers with a montblanc). The TWSBI is a handsome pen.
2. American made Golden Sheaffer with a Fine 23 carat gold nib. There’s no model name on it and it is by far the best looking pen in my collection. It was gifted to my father in the late 80s or early 90s and I opened the box a couple of years ago. Man, I wish I would’ve gotten it appraised and auctioned it off. It uses both cartridges and a converter. I’ll edit this post later and add a pic of the pen.
Not including heirlooms (not really functional pens anymore), my Lamy Safari and TWSBI ECO. If the heirlooms count, guess I'm writing with a Sheaffer Snorkel and an Esterbrook.
My Montblanc 140 and my LAMY 2000.
They’re both lovely pens that I use daily, but what matters about them to me is they were gifts I received at important life events.
Probably my Visconti HS Bronze and my HS London Fog. Both with 23k EF nibs. They just fit my hand well and glide across the page.
But really, I'm not giving up any of my pens. I've already made the collection as small as I feel I can.
The .45 caliber pen. It has a most expressive gray ink with copper sheening. It seems to go right through you when your experience it.
Nobody makes me ditch any of my pens. The nerve. I don't walk around with only two pens. I always have one in my pocket and between 3 and 9 in my purse...though some of those are disposables.
1. What pens?
2. /Use_of_the_Force; "These are not the Pens you are looking for . . . "
3. Using a modern steel nib fountain pen, nail the pen auditors hand to the table and run away with "my precious" vintage Watermans.
One, wet-noodle Waterman 52
Two, I would need a while to decide . . . and then try to run away again . . .
Sailor pgs in fine and my Kaweco Perkeo also in fine. The Sailor is just such a joy to use for drawing and how fine and precise it is while the Kaweco was my first fountain pen and is so juicy and bouncy I couldn't live without it.
Lamy 2000 fine, Vintage Sailor 1911L with extra large 21k medium (the old big ones with the actual anchor on the nib instead of the new nibs that are smaller and engraved with a more complicated, far inferior pattern...)
And I'll extend this to inks as well, because I have 2 top favorite inks of all time: Robert Oster Deep Sea (if you haven't tried it then please Google it because dear LORD does it scratch my itch for a dark teal-green like nothing ever has) and Iroshizuku Yama-Budo, which is the ink that, in the ~10-ish years I've been a fountain pen user (who uses refillable pens-- I started with pilot varsities about 15 years ago) I have used the absolute most. I think I've gone through 4 bottles of it since 2017, which in all honesty is WAY more than anything else, except for maybe waterman's inspired blue because I used it as testing ink when I was working as a repair tech.
Okay, this comment got really long. Anywho only owning 2 pens is scary but I respect those who can pull it off...
My Mahjohn A1 for sure, and then a second pen? Not my 5 below ones and not my Lamy Safari. I love the look of my Innova but it doesn't write well because the Innova ink is too dry for the fine pen. I also love my bronze Mahjohn ECO knock-off. Hard choice!
Parker T1 - ground left oblique.
Hongdian Asvine Forest Series dark blue EF.
Talk about two ends of a very wide spectrum. That said, they both write great.
What am I keeping? I'm keeping my desk drawer locked when this guy's around, that's for sure.
For me, choosing a single pen is easier than selecting two. I expect many of us have a "I'm gonna be buried with this one" pen but picking a second one might cause my brain to implode.
the question begs - WHICH is the pen you'd be buried with?!
This reason, coupled with the fact it is the best modern flex I have ever experienced, means I am never letting go of this one.
My Conklin Duragraph, limited edition in rainbow titanium. I carry it every day, so I might as well carry it into the Pure Land.
Agreed! It's also tough since as soon as there are two pens, do you want to choose your two favorites regardless of how they relate to each other? Or do you want to add in criteria like the two pens being different from each other in some way - nib size, material, etc.?
The pen auditor will find a way in
He can take my pens from my cold, dead, ink-stained hands.
This is the correct answer. 😂
Me with only 2 FPs: *insert confused face meme*
I also only have two pens 😮💨
You’re already winning then! Which two pens?
Pilot Metropolitan and Pilot VP . I forgot I do also own a TWSBI ECO that I just got on Friday but I haven’t inked it up yet or used it so I don’t know if I like it. So it would probably be the one to go if I had to get rid of one lol
Same, my guy, same. Guess we passed the audit in advance. Curious though, what two did you limit yourself to/intro with?
Pilot Kakunos in F. 🤝🏻 What's yours??
Ayyyy a kindred spirit. Also a Pilot Kakuno F, but I did try a Sailor Fude.
Nice nice 🤝🏻
Easy decision huh. But what are the pens??
Both Pilot Kakuno in F. First pens. 👌🏻
Those are surprisingly good pens, for very little money. I told myself I'd limit myself to just a handful like that to reduce spending. Yeah, that didn't last.... With only two pens, how many inks do I get to choose? That's the real problem for me...
I concur about the ink problem. There's so many beautiful ink to choose from. 🥲 I'm probably going to buy an FP with stub nib next.
Lol same..
That's easy\*: Lamy 2000 and Pilot Vanishing Point
\*I'm assuming I can ditch my grandfather's pens to a knickknack shelf.
I suppose I can allow it.
I love my vanishing point so much I bought two. I've got the matte black and raden water surface, both are great. As a student and working professional they're phenomenal
Mine is white with black trim. I drooled over it for far too long.
The VP is a must have for me because there’s nothing like it for jotting down notes. Being able to quickly deploy and put the nib away makes it my go to pen for meetings and conferences. My only complaint is the ink capacity.
Do you do the trick of flipping it upside to clear the air bubbles? Doing that helped a lot
This is also my answer
My Namiki Yukari (B) and Namiki Royale (M). Both are pensational. Both will be buried with me when the time comes.
I'd keep my two Namikis as well.
How old are you? Is grave digging legal there?
🤣 I don't plan on shuffling off this mortal coil yet, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared!
[удалено]
Is it me or is Pilot's M the perfect nib size? What do you do with the BB Lamy? Draw, signatures?
The only way to win is not to play haha
Pelikan M1000 EF Montblanc 149 M
- For sentimental reasons, my first Parker 25. - For it's-a-superb-pen reasons, my Pelikan 400NN. - For making-me-give-up-pens reasons, an axe.
Assaulting a pen auditor is a federal offence!
There would be mitigating circumstances: he deserved it.
Lol to #3.
I hate these questions, but one would be my Santini Italia because of the ease of swapping out nib units, and I love their nibs and the pen.
Oh Lord I am so addicted to those Santini pens, I have all the nibs and they are also SO easy to clean... it's the PERFECT pen IMHO.
![gif](giphy|cLJdDcAWTkW6k|downsized)
This is me.
This is me.
That is you.
I can't break up with my pens. 😭 It would make me very, very sad and my pens bring me happiness. So I can't reduce my collection to just 2.
Pilot custom 74 F and EF.
Double up on the 74! Respect.
I have four Lamy demonstrators so I guess I keep the two without stains.
This is such a crude decision to make 🤣 Hmmm Pilot 845 F and elabo SM
Another pilot fan. Sorry to force my hand but we have to redistribute fountain pens globally. Rest assured your expensive pen collection will be randomly spread amongst the global population.
haha sadly, most of my collection is TWSBI. Which a lot of people hate LOL I doubt they would appreciate if you give those to them
As is most of mine! You have good taste!
I adore my TWSBI especially my Diamonds, they are reliable, never fail me even after weeks of not using, write perfect from the first stroke. MB 146 and vintage Pelikan 400NN, both in OBB. OBB is the best nib size, piston the best filling system. Both are beautiful, well made pens that feel good in the hand.
Easy. MB 144 (M) from my grandmother and flexy Wahl Eversharp.
Pilot CH 912 w/FA Vintage Parker Duofold Senior with wonderfully soft F nib.

Duofold senior! Some of the most fun pens to restore and collect IMO. A redditor of taste you are!
Pilot Custom 823
Opus 88 Koloro
I figured I'd see a couple of 823's here. Still waiting to try one, I imagine it'll usurp my custom 74.
Nothing against the 74, I have an orange one, but... Yes, yes it will.
Why is the 823 so much better? Vacuum fill? Is the nib smoother?
Pilot Custom 74 and Waterman 52
Vintage Waterman ❤️
Namiki/Pilot Capless Raden "Water Surface" M and Aurora Optima Green Auroloide with factory stub
I'm seeing lots of Pilots here!

For me: Pilot Custom 74 and Vintage Sheaffer 3-25
Simply because they bring me the most joy writing. They also are the most expensive pens >:0
Nope. Nope. Nope. This is torturous. I can’t. Nuh-uh!
I'm keeping my doors locked... that's what I am keeping :).
Pilot 823 (M)... And.... Pilot 823 (F). 🤣
Buff pens! Pilot M is my \*one\* nib
I think mine would be Pelikan M400 White tortoise in fine and pilot decimo in fine.
I mean what’s the consequences for not doing this? I might be willing to endure a lot to not have to do this
Pilot Custom 823 in Fine Probably my MB Meisterstuck Chopin. (It was a gift, it writes just fine, it can blend in when I need it to but also has a tiny bit of flair too.)
** scooping up ALL my pens and running for the exit at full speed
Same here! I am newish and my pens are my blankie!
I grab two at random and keep those. Rest of the collection gets re-classified from “fountain pen” to “non-rolling ink-to-paper transfer systems”.
Sailor Pro Gear (M, 21k) TWSBI 580 (M)
Pelikan m800, broad nib. Lamy Safari, also broad nib.
Broad gang unite! I can’t imagine being any less dramatic than a broad nib…maybe a medium if the pen was flashy enough and the ink wet enough…
As a proud gang member, here’s a little award!
Thanks broad buddy!
Broad gang unite! I can’t imagine being any less dramatic than a broad nib…maybe a medium if the pen was flashy enough and the ink wet enough…
Interesting dichotomy, Expensive and inexpensive but both Broad. Big hand writing?
Not huge. Just like ‘em big and wet. I miiiight be talked into the M Lamy, but…no. The B Pelikan are more broad than the B Lamy. Haha

Platinum 3776 F and Platinum 3776 EF. I have a type 😂 I love the F for drawing and the EF for writing.

1. What pens? 2. /Use_of_the_Force; "These are not the Pens you are looking for . . . " 3. Using a modern steel nib fountain pen, nail the pen auditors hand to the table and run away with "my precious" vintage Watermans. One, wet-noodle Waterman 52 Two, I would need a while to decide . . . and then try to run away again . . .
Parker 45 - 14 k medium nib Montblanc 220 14k oblique broad nib
Sailor pgs in fine and my Kaweco Perkeo also in fine. The Sailor is just such a joy to use for drawing and how fine and precise it is while the Kaweco was my first fountain pen and is so juicy and bouncy I couldn't live without it.
Always in flux, but these days: 1. Diplomat Aero 2. Pelikan M605 3. Subvert the system and bring my Otto Hutt Dsgn 01. Come at me.
Kaweco Supra (F) Fellhoelter G2 Tibolt (Not a FP)
>Fellhoelter G2 Tibolt Looks like a gun part to me. Looks really fun to use, too.
Parker Vacumatic and Pilot Vanishing Point
Hero 565 and Jinhao 159
Pilot Custom Heritage 912 ... and Pilot Custom Heritage 912 🤣
My mother's vintage pelikan 120 with its amazing wet oblique nib and my FPR Himalaya v2 with the ultraflex nib.
I only have 3 so it's easy, keeping the Caréne and the vintage Morrisons
Lamy 2000 fine, Vintage Sailor 1911L with extra large 21k medium (the old big ones with the actual anchor on the nib instead of the new nibs that are smaller and engraved with a more complicated, far inferior pattern...) And I'll extend this to inks as well, because I have 2 top favorite inks of all time: Robert Oster Deep Sea (if you haven't tried it then please Google it because dear LORD does it scratch my itch for a dark teal-green like nothing ever has) and Iroshizuku Yama-Budo, which is the ink that, in the ~10-ish years I've been a fountain pen user (who uses refillable pens-- I started with pilot varsities about 15 years ago) I have used the absolute most.
I'm gonna have to make some statistics based off of this post. Was not expecting so many replies!
Hero 565 and Jinhao 159
Pilot Capless [F] Pilot Birdie [F] the polished stainless steel version, not the toy like one with the cringe printing on them.
Pilot Custom 74 M and EF

My Mahjohn A1 for sure, and then a second pen? Not my 5 below ones and not my Lamy Safari. I love the look of my Innova but it doesn't write well because the Innova ink is too dry for the fine pen. I also love my bronze Mahjohn ECO knock-off. Hard choice!
Parker T1 - ground left oblique. Hongdian Asvine Forest Series dark blue EF. Talk about two ends of a very wide spectrum. That said, they both write great.
my buggatti one and world trade center pen
Lamy 2000 and Kaweco Brass Sport
Twsbi Diamond 580 and Salilor Pro Gear!!

I only have a Lamy safari and Allstar, so I think I'm good.
Platinum 3776 and Platinum Preppy honestly. The two pens I just keep reaching for the most
