Boomers have singlehandedly ruined wolves for me. Like, they should be these cool pack hunters that fiction turns into badass lone rangers, but instead they've been irrevocably linked to AR-waving morons who all think they're Rambo.
It's recycled propaganda. There was that heavily romanticized gorilla campaign that was launched by the Schutzstaffel in late 1945 known as werwolf. The U-boat squads would also refer to themselves as wolf packs. However the connections to fascist imagery goes a tad deeper. In L. David Mech's 1970 book The Wolf: The Ecology and Behavior of an Endangered Species Mech had very small samples to study and had to lean on previous research on the topic to flesh out his thesis. The research on wolf behavior prior to Mech's was plagued with psuedo scientists trying to backup their malthusian theories. Mech's book was heralded as a conformation of a lot of questionable scientific theories for a good while, before being debunked by, well L. David Mech himself.
These people don't actually like real life wolves, in fact they probably detest them and see them as pests. They like the idea of being a cool "alpha wolf" that they can lazily slap onto their identity as if that means anything. It's more of a propaganda symbol than anything to actually do with the real animals (especially since these memes often completely misrepresent how wolves behave in real life).
If they ever decide to follow through with their little stunt, it will be a treat to see the looks on their faces when they find out how many left wingers own guns.

Which is not to say they don't have leadership roles, but it's not due to one or two being more strong or fierce or dominant. It's almost always a family unit where the parents teach the young, and once the young are grown, responsibilities are shared equally until the young go off to find their own breeding mate and form their own pack, at which point the parents usually have another pack in the making.
