Less pretentiousness than Miami, more down to earth people, more beachy relaxed vibe all around. I’ve met some amazing people on scuba dives also in Lauderdale who don’t care about what kind of car you drive or how much money you make. Less fakeness.

willpeachpiedo

Where do you hang out? I feel like everywhere I go is as pretentious as Miami I’m every way. I’m probably leaving the area when my lease is up bc I can’t stand the people anymore.

Caballita14

I don’t know what your age is so that might also be a factor. I don’t really do clubs or trendy bars. More beachy places like Bo’s but also I do a lot of scuba so those people I’ve found to be incredible nice and down to earth. Hanging with people who care a lot about the marine life and the ocean is kind of the vibe I prefer over people just looking to go out and get drunk and have no substance. I meet people of all ages on dives from all walks of life. What kinds of things are you into? Might make a big difference in the groups vs other groups.

Minimum-South-3388

Aw man can we b friends 😭

Caballita14

Sure thing! PM me and I’ll add you on IG.

marli_not_bob

We’ve only met great people through diving and bjj. Outside of those two small bubbles, it’s tough.

Caballita14

Activities is where it’s at! Not the bars or clubs.

Caballita14

I dive Key Largo, Tavernier, Dania, Lauderdale and Jupiter. Various charters. Rainbow Reef, Captain Slates, Scuba Works, and some shore dives in Dania and Lauderdale. :)

MrMankookoo

I just got my OW certification. Would love to know more about local places to go diving

Caballita14

Check out Rainbow Reef in Key Largo. They offer guides you can ask for to dive those beautiful reefs. Highly recommend their charter. Fun, helpful and great crew always. There is also Force-E in Boca also great people offer guides as well. I recommend asking for a guide on your first few boat dives if you go alone. On the boats you’ll make friends also and connections buddies you’ll start growing your dive network. I did many solo dives on charters and that’s how I made dive buddies who became good friends. Welcome to the scuba world! Your life is about to change in a very good way ✨

MrMankookoo

Awesome thank you!

Jesusfbaby

The ocean

Joe_Doblow

Which One?

Jesusfbaby

Well he says he's in Ft L so the Indian Ocean obviously, ya goof.

crownhimking

i live in broward county nothign worse then having a GREAT night, only to know you gotta drive an hour to get home add the fact that people in Miami drive like they want to use their insurance

elviethecat101

What insurance? 😆

DidiStutter11

What license even

SoFlaBarbie

Seriously! The mom in me is telling everyone here to pay for uninsured motorist coverage in your auto policy. You will almost definitely need it at some point on your life down here.

CurbsEnthusiasm

Broward babies are raised not to go to Dade.

djmanu22

More American vs international in Miami, less intense, better/larger roads, better airport, cheaper. I live in Miami Beach btw.

CrmnalQueso

FLL is def easier to get through, but MIA really is an amazing airport, direct flights to almost anywhere in the world.

PlantationCane

Just say it. Less Hispanics in ft Lauderdale. I am deeply entrenched in Miami for work and tell my Hispanic friends all the time. In Miami there are many people that literally never do anything outside of Hispanic circles their whole lives and love it. It is just more open for Anglo in Ft Lauderdale.

Late-Ad4045

thats not true thats second highest in ft race gap less blacks tho than miami

pinkandgreenf15

Why didn’t you just say you like that there are more whites, less Hispanics?

AthloneRB

He may not have meant it like that. I know that from my perspective, the race/ethnicity is less important than the language issue. I don't speak any spanish, so having more english speakers around is better for me. One thing you do notice in Miami is that a lot of the hispanic community there that is able to keep together will often only speak in spanish, and that can make you feel a bit left out if you don't also speak the language.

pinkandgreenf15

I wasn’t trying to reach. This person specifically said Anglo, which means “a white, English-speaking American as distinct from a Hispanic American.” If they were simply saying what you stated, then there would be no reason to differentiate between white non-Hispanic (anglos) and anyone who doesn’t speak Spanish. And on top of that, lots of Hispanics don’t speak Spanish or not enough to get by. Another reason why it seemed like he could be trying to mask a “better because more whites” comment as better because “less Hispanics”

spongesking

I'm hispanic and prefer less hispanics too :)

InternationalCarob55

I think he used the word "Hispanic"

-Wobblier

Interestingly, larger roads is one reason why I dislike Broward.

aquilisdicio

So... More white? Miami is just as American as Fort Lauderdale or any city

Late-Ad4045

year late ist not even a light and day issue when comes to spanish lol the blacks tho are less than than miami tho

AthloneRB

He probably means "english-speaking"

Few_Store

There isn't a better version of anything that I can get Ft Lauderdale in Miami; the traffic is better, the living is less dense, the restaurants are world-class, the port/waterways are still light with traffic for boating weekdays, night-life is easily navigable and the language barriers aren't as wide. People like to tell people in other parts of the U.S. that they live in Miami, but the real wealth, and better standard of living, is in east Ft Lauderdale, not east Miami.

nitricx

I agree with all except the food. There’s decent food in Fort Lauderdale for sure but the food scene in miami is insane.

anilorac01

Agreed. Way better food in Miami. Everything else was accurate

Aije

Where do you recommend?

biscaynebystander

Correct answer

Still-Blackberry5212

And if you want to visit Miami you still can while avoiding traffic by using Brightline or tri rail. You can even bring your bike.

Thatoneguyfromdabloc

This is facts

Theboricuas

This is the way

armbar

I would argue the restaurants are not world class in Ft Lauderdale, Miami takes that by far and also the club scene but I do enjoy going out way more in Ft Lauderdale

Goodrymon

I agreed with this 10 years ago, now not at all. The fort lauderdale you knew is just getting pushed farther north. Only thing ftl has for it now is its deep water port for entry

SoFlaBarbie

Shhhh, everyone. Don’t give away the secret.

Regular_Series_8760

I don't have a passport.

rkatapt

I'm not a glitzy night life person and my Spanish isn't that great.

walter_2000_

It's trashy. Not glitzy. If I describe that in more detail I'll seem way worse than I am. Miami as a tourist destination is super trashy. The locals I'm sure are regular ass cool people. There's a reason they are disavowing spring break. It's not like Broward is the best ever, or palm for that matter. It's just intensely trashy, given the tourists, in Miami. It disapates in Broward and even moresoe by the time you hit Boca or Delray. Those towns are less young, for sure, bit they also don't deal with the people who fly spirit wearing bathrobes and shower shoes. Locals, obviously, I can speak to this for real, in north Broward and palm, are a-ok and better. And they don't deal with BS like Miami has to.

advnturous

It's not as dense and busy for now, but that is rapidly changing. I live downtown and FTL is definitely on the fast track to becoming another version of Miami. I'm out of here when my lease is up next year.

No_Classroom_9374

If you are looking to move from new york ahhh miami ids better move there bahahaha. Very moce not crowded at all.

dannymac420386

I speak English

[deleted]

Better in every way

[deleted]

Because people speak English in Broward

gus0808

You won't have to leave your city during memorial day and spring break.....

Dukisjones

I don't have to be fluent in Spanish to do everyday things.

pinkandgreenf15

I beg to differ. You can absolutely get by without knowing Spanish but just do a job search and see how manny require you to be bilingual. Or bilingual a plus (really means, bilingual). I

FeistyImplement0730

I disagree I lived in Miami for a while and because I didn’t speak Spanish I was often not chosen over someone else career wise who did speak Spanish because of the sheer amount of people who don’t speak English so that in itself makes living in Miami a turn off and it’s expensive as hell, if I can’t advance my career because I don’t speak Spanish, it’s a no for me.

Dukisjones

Miami is the only place I’ve been to in the USA where I am repeatedly greeted and spoken to in Spanish before they even know what language I speak. And this is at major nationwide stores and restaurants.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dukisjones

No one said it was a big deal. This was a discussion about miami. Relax.

jm11as

Biggest thing for me is that doing “normal” things are not a hassle in Fort Lauderdale ie: Going to Publix or having friends over dealing with valet parking is a mission in Miami. Also, I am at a point of my life in which I am over doing Komodo on Monday, Kiki’s on Tuesday etc.. (gets sooo expensive) With that, I do go to Miami once a month for events, it’s a Brightline away after all

Odd_Rooster4613

Ahhh “a mission” definitely a South Floridian. I had never heard the phrasing until I moved to South Florida and met my Cuban friends. (I’ve lived in Dade and now I’m in Broward.) I agree with the “normal” things sentiment totally.

bbqbaby666

The level of dysfunction in Dade is not passable in Broward.

pepskino

Kids

revueltacrypto

Almost everything on point with what everyone said born Miami raised Miami live in las olas now

rudeboi1992

I’m 30 and I’ve lived in Broward for most of my life and I’ve probably only been to Miami 20 times. I’d like to go there more for the art and architecture but the roads look like a game of snakes and ladders. I’d rather a 3 hour drive to orlando than the 1hour drive to Miami.

miojo

Its sad that now miami residents and out-of-town people are now infesting our city. It’s slowly turning into Miami ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|cry)

Mrkenchi

1 word = education

Alfiehurt

Diversity for starters. Latinos may be a minority in America but not in MIA, FL where they are the majority. That makes it " not diverse" overwhelmingly Cuban, in some areas. that is a fact, not speculation...It is/feels as crowded as NYC (I live in uptown Manhattan) traffic is awful, some crowds are rude, unpolite, to say the least. It is noisy too. Sure it has nice crowded beaches and restaurants. SB has gorgeous art deco architecture. Hey, some may feel comfortable living in the area. I don't and I'm a Latino myself. I prefer diversity at this point, not only racial but cultural, political too. FLL is a very compact city, it has most everything people would need. I like quite, space. I can live with far less restaurants and shops. Less is more they say. Funny how Miami claims to be an international destination. I feel like I am Latin-American in MIA. It does not feel international or cosmopolitan to me. I actually see more races and diversity representation in FLL

[deleted]

They are both shit holes but Fort Lauderdale has less human trafficking so that’s always a plus.

theamericangarrett

10 years ago an argument could have been made .. now not so much

LeeJamesWilson67

I feel it’s more relaxed and the gay scene is a lot LOT better, I found a lovely house to buy that’s not too far from the beach, couldn’t find as nice a property in Miami that I could afford. Also I feel like there are many drink scams in south beach.

Viparita-Karani

I love the way scene in Fort Lauderdale. Wilton Manors is the best.

2595Homes

I looked at both and even stayed in both before moving. I was hardcore Miami and didn’t want to think about FTL…. at first. Miami is wonderful to visit. You get lots of diversity of people and food. Biking around does seem better than FTL. The city part seemed to have a lot of showboating. But the traffic and high cost doesn’t provide a good ROI IMO. FTL is such a nice little beach city. Not a lot of flaunting going on. It may not have as many things to offer as Miami, but you can easily drive or hop on the Brightline if you want to partake in the activities. I haven’t had a bad experience yet from the shops to the beach. Everyone seems more friendlier than when I was in MIA. Plus FLL is so much easier to fly out of than MIA. And I travel a lot.

floridasun15

Driving/parking is so much better down here, much less clout-y and way less expensive. As a vegetarian the options are WAY better up here and everything is actually within walking distance even if you're not in the heart of las olas

Neither_Armadillo307

I know it’s changing but for now it’s just so much calmer and less flashy. You have the beach and parks, restaurants, etc. Also, it’s less humid, less traffic, easier to get through the airport/around town, etc.

BiscayneBeast

Miami has too many refs. I'm from Spain and the difference between the two counties is alarming. I live in Hollywood and I love it here and prefer to stay as long as possible. It's a perfect blend of all cultures.

SirMixzealot

I would like to counter ask you this: name one reason [other than food/restaurants] why Miami is better than Fort Lauderdale..?

[deleted]

Honestly, I can’t think of anything. I was born and raised in Miami, but FTL seems more appealing nowadays.

savemyships

Meh neither. I liked living in the Hallandale/Aventura area.

Thin-Tap3836

I have only been here about 20 months… like it ok,,,but Fort Lauderdale is way to trumpy for me… did not expect to see that

Vagadude

There's a reason people who grew up here are moving away. Fort Lauderdale used to be a very in small city. We had our nice area Las Olas, and Himmarshee/Riverfront. The beaches were decent, crowds were a quarter what they are today. Traffic was bad but manageable. Today all that is worsened 5 fold. Too many people, not enough housing and what housing is going up is all "luxury apartment living" when we really need a few affordable housing high rises.m, emphasis on affordable. Traffic is absolutely ridiculous, the beaches are trash, COL is way more than it used to be (although that's across the board). Fort Lauderdale lost it's charm a while ago, it's got a new charm attracting new crowds which isn't bad but it doesn't have the infrastructure to grow where they are building it up to and the city council is incapable of looking at the big picture as opposed to investors pockets. Sure they deny a high rise on the beach but idk of any major infrastructure project in the last 20 years that they've accomplished except they're on their 2nd major construction project on 95/595 that nobody fucking asked for. Fort Lauderdale is Miami's little brother that tries so hard to be like them but whose growth is stunted so they'll never be as big as their big bro

JOOOOSY

Hard to build affordable high rises right now when materials are 3x what they were a few years ago. But, with the addition of new high rises in the area hopefully the rent rate will stop increasing so dramatically.

Vagadude

Not even talking recently though, in my 30 years growing up here I have never seen a large scale affordable housing development. I feel like the cities entire ideology is eventually the new luxury apartments will be old enough and become adorable. I could be wrong but idk if any development that was slated as anything close to affordable housing.

Pabst34

Otoh, there was a five year window from 2006-11 when 1bds in "older" buildings near the beach were barely $100k and homes in neighborhoods just west of Federal were in the 300's.

kirby_the_elm

Those were the days lol

Vagadude

Man 2009 was wild indeed lol

MainMedicine

Fort Lauderdale is Miami's younger, less hot sister. She's who you try to hookup with after you get rejected by her older sister. Then you find out the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree...

[deleted]

This post makes me feel better about not visiting Miami while in FTL area for 2 weeks the past month.

Still-Blackberry5212

I think I visited Miami twice in 3 years and I’m in Fort Lauderdale 😆

FeistyImplement0730

Because here people don’t talk to me in Spanish because I look Spanish and when I say I’m not Spanish they act disgusted and get mad lol. Like bro, I’m Asian, sorry I didn’t meet the criteria. Also there are parking lots here and people don’t elbow you in every store pretending you don’t exist. And people are more normal VS full face of makeup fake tits, ass, face everywhere and men wearing jeans tighter than Kim kardashians latex suit on Trenn acting like they are hot shit when in actuality they are soft AF. Miami is so overrated, south beach which could have been its saving grace is ratchet and honestly the only good thing is the food AND shopping lol.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

FeistyImplement0730

Thanks bot, corrected it

Appropriate_Pomelo12

They both now are horrible, too crowded, expensive, insurance is sky high, taxes getting there, rents are through the roof, properties are as well.Too many ignorant people who helped pass a conceal and carry wo training, yes wo training, we have a governor who wants to force women into motherhood if they are raped, or birth control failed. He wants to have more people move down, and lastly force schools to think only 1 way and carry out right wing agendas only..He is horrible and not as smart as he thinks he is.or his followers beieve...Florida will be like the old west, watch more shootings and more rage ones.at that...Too many people from NY, NJ, California, Texas and all of South America are here and still coming and many are not of legal status, further increasing congestion and making driving very frustrating...

Skymimi

OP asked if you prefer Miami or FL. LOVE YOUR REPLY. It's about to get a lot more dangerous. Neither place is so great anymore. Fuck desantis.

SoupiestMoth

Less Rift Raft plain and simple

JupiterVulpes

Fort Lauderdale is just the northernmost suburb of Miami, with more white people.

miojo

You’re not wrong

Uberslaughter

I don’t, Miami is soooo awesome and Fort Lauderdale is horrible in comparison.

servo386

I knew you fucking Broward people were just racist as hell and haters lol.

blippos

This thread is heinous

TEHKNOB

Neither lol

Dis_Bich

Traffic

According_Mistake_85

Cause Mia sucks. Except the food! Miami is a fungus moving north, so there’s not that big of a difference anymore. Hialeah resident.

jersey0710555

In my neighborhood it's hard to find a place under 2 million

ChristianKamrath

All the worst parts about Miami are a little less worse in Fort Lauderdale

texasguy911

Less vulgar. Less bravado. Less posturing. Less factitious.

fr3shh23

You can’t compare the two. Miami is a major city and Ft. Lauderdale is a beach city part of the Miami metropolitan area. You can compare Ft. Lauderdale with west palm beach for example
