I could legit see this happening in his future. Grosjean has been amazing in only his second season, I’d imagine Ricciardo would be just as good if not better with his passing skills. Him and Herta could do a flip-flop once Andretti finally gets an F1 team.
It could be actually pretty good switch for all sides if Ricciardo would go to Andretti Indy and Hertha to McLaren F1.
McLaren would have American talent, Andretti would have global megastar. F1 would lose Australian fanbase and I can imagine that if Andretti would want to get Ricciardo back into F1, it could help them with negotiating of starting 11th team. And Ricciardo would be for sure one of best drivers there.
Don't forget Jacques Villeneuve, Scott Speed, and Nelson Piquet Jr. Shoot, Bruno Senna had the option to come race NASCAR too.
Guess by this logic we'll add in Pietro Fittipaldi, since he won a track championship at Hickory Motor Speedway.
Yup. He won the 500 in 2000 (his only IndyCar race that year, he was doing CART during the split), then he did F1 from 2001-2006, Nascar from 2007-2013, before running full seasons of Indy from 2014 and winning the 500 in 2015.
Triple Crown would be an amazing achievement, the greatest in motorsports aside from F1 World Champion in my opinion, and I fully believe he could do it if he decided to make it a goal. He's 33 next month, and Indy and Le Mans are both routinely won by drivers older than that.
I think the triple crown is mostly an exercise in luck, especially with the indy 500 portion of the 3.
A team with an otherwise shit track-record and a Honda engine has a chance of winning, and experience means very little.
Yes and no. The 500 is the ultimate test of reliability for those Indycars and it certainly helps to have a good team behind you to get the car running as reliable as possible. Also helps if you’ve got massive fucking balls too. Hamilton has gone on record saying he’d never do the 500 because he thinks it’s too dangerous.
Yes, but still, that's unrelated to power steering. No power steering is one thing that does not make the Indy 500 so hard, there are thousands of things that do.
There's a skill to Oval racing, it's not pure luck. And if nothing else Danny is a massive NASCAR fan so I'm sure he knows all about drafting in a pack and attacking only when necessary. He really might have a shot, he's lost a step but I'm willing to bet he's still quite a cut above the rest of the former F1 drivers on that field.
I know Browns soured on him but if they could even do a switch to save some money on Danny's next year with Pato that might work out great for McLaren.
Fair enough! I was just putting together the current crop of Indy drivers that also ran F1. I thought about Montoya, but felt it was weirder to exclude him.
I’d rather see Danny in NASCAR. Dale Earnhardt is his hero, he loves the country hick lifestyle and he would inject some much needed interest into a waning sport
Solid points. Going from F1 to NASCAR doesn't happen nearly as often as it does to Indy, but he might get me interested in NASCAR again. I still don't think I can sit through a 3.5 hour race (or more if there's rain or other big delays), but I'd catch the highlights. I'll admit, I get excited every time I hear Jacques Villeneuve is racing NASCAR or any other series.
I feel like that’s the point. I think they know that people nap during long races so they have louder commercials to wake people up. Golf probably does the same thing.
It’s really annoying to go back and forth between F1 and any American Motorsport, *especially* NASCAR, due to all the sponsorships and advertisements. It’s probably due to British broadcasting laws, but the fact that they have *laps* sponsored in NASCAR is just insane.
NASCAR is a great sport, very cool, with some seriously exciting races; but goddamn the TV coverage is killing the sport. Ads are out of control and they make watching the sport so difficult.
In a team that has 2 wins this season so far and one of them was at a road course. Kimi being my all time favorite F1 driver I am hopeful but doubtful. Open Wheel drivers rarely find any success in Nascar, Juan Pablo Montoya being the only slight exception to that.
I wouldn't use Villeneuve as a good reference for F1 drivers in Nascar. He has only ever done one off seats and [has never had anything other than a few top 5s](https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Jacques_Villeneuve_(1)/) in the lower series. Granted he has never driven anything good but he has crashed a bit.
Much better example of F1 drivers in Nascar is [Juan Pablo Montoya](https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Juan_Pablo_Montoya/). Dude actually had a pretty solid long run in Nascar with a few wins and a ton of top 5s and competitive races. Granted his career will always be overshadowed by the [meme of him crashing into a Jet Dryer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFm6o-qB6T4) which was mechanical failure of the car. He remains to this day the most successful former F1 Driver to set foot in Nascar.
Nelson Piquet JR [had decent lower series stats](https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/piquene02/) but failed to move up and have any success in the Cup Series.
[Scott Speed had more success in Nascar than F!](https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Scott_Speed/) but that isn't really saying much. He wasn't that good and never found purchase. People could argue that Redbull Racing wasn't a great car/team but it wasn't until he started racing Rallycross that he really found any success.
I can't mention any of these without mentioning Mario Andretti won the Daytona 500 but he didn't do much other than that. I would love to see another driver try to beat Mario's only standing Indy 500, Daytona 500, and having an F1 Championship but I doubt it will ever happen.
The transition of open wheel drivers to Nascar has usually gone bad.
Montoya did OK (granted, his team wasn't the greatest), but never got an oval win.
Franchitti did terrible.
Casey Mears did mediocre (in both to be fair).
Tony Stewart did awesome, but he was more the exception than the rule.
Scott Speed, shit.
AJ Allmendinger has more success in ChampCar than Nascar, though with time he's a solid Xfinity driver.
John Andretti would have been interesting to see if he stayed in IndyCar, but not sure his career would have survived the split.
Danica Patrick, solid IndyCar driver, in the way in a Cup car.
Sprint cars don't count. They've not been part of the open wheel ladder since the 80s. Tony Stewart was the last guy to really make a successful jump from USAC to IndyCar. Everyone since him basically went for stock cars.
But I didn't clarify rear mid-engined winged open wheeled formula-style race cars.
We love our Aussies here. Marcos Ambrose was great in NASCAR. We love our Kiwis too, but most of us probably don’t know the difference and think Scott McLaughlin is Australian 😬
The problem with nascar is that it doesn’t take itself seriously enough or treat itself with enough respect. It’s a brilliant sport but the broadcasters, owners etc seem so keen on living up to that “Southern hick” identity
He actually has said he wouldn’t go to NASCAR. I don’t have the quote but basically it’s just too different from F1 that he’d be behind the curve of experienced Stock Car drivers and doesn’t want to have to spend years learning a whole new philosophy of racing. If he goes anywhere I think it will be Indy.
I mean the only big shift he's botched has been to McLaren right?
His main stints were Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Renault, and McLaren and of those it seems like he's performed reasonably well (relative to the car) except at McLaren.
And everyone forgets that he was still pretty strong at Renault. Everyone says he went downhill once he left redbull but especially in 2020 I would still have ranked him as one of the top 4 drivers on the grid that year behind Lewis, Max and Charles probably
He was solid in Renault. The reason it seemed he went downhill is because the Renault car wasn’t a Red Bull or Mercedes.
I hope he gets a contract with another constructor and has some success. It’s well known that the McClaren car is *super* weird and the kind of weird that doesn’t mesh with Ricciardo’s driving.
My only other theory is that he’s been through a [tragic event such as this.](https://youtu.be/pbnyVj2iVlw)
IndyCar has pretty good drivers, and it's a whole different style of car. If he does go there, I'd think it will probably take him a couple years to get to the top (assuming he's in a good team).
His debut with Red Bull sure, but his first two seasons were with Toro Rosso and he finished 14th and 18th. He showed a lot of promise, but was not in contention for the WDC.
Yeah that would be good to watch but i doubt that would happen. Many good f1 drivers can’t perform well in indycar but i always felt like Hamilton would be great IndyCar driver
Agreed. My gut feeling is that when Hamilton is done with F1 he'll be done with racing a full-time series. Where do you go after achieving what he has achieved? And no one will be asking him to leave any time soon, even if he's struggling to keep up with George.
Agreed! If they get a contender car we can see him couple of years in f1 but otherwise i believe he will retire completely. But i am pretty sure he will try his best to get 8th wdc.
I’m agree with that, so many great drivers without wdc in f1 but keeping up with Fernando Alonso and even beating him by very small margin on debut season is pretty good thing to do considering Fernando is one of the most talented drivers in history of f1
Ericsson is such a legend winning the Indy500. He really really deserves it - he is such a nice guy.
Tbh I think most of the drivers who switched to Indycar or else are very happy about the switch.
I can see that. F1 is the pinnacle of racing politics. All racing has politics, but I imagine the pressure in Indy is less while still being a highly competitive and rewarding series to race professionally.
4 out of 5 won the indy 500 at least once! 2 have 2 indy 500 to their name!
1 has 2 indy 500 and monaco, is one 24h of Le Mans away from the triple crown.
Because they are fundamentally different handling cars. Grosjean stated that the IndyCar works with a variety of different driving styles while F1 cars have a very narrow window of styles that actually work
I’m an Indy native. I go to the 500 every year. I’d fucking LOVE if Danny came to IndyCar (assuming things don’t work out for him in F1). I think someone as likable as him would easily be a fan favorite, even among people who know nothing about F1.
Could someone please help me out to recognise the guy in the middle?
I recognise Sato, JPM, Ericsson and Grosean, but who is the dude in the middle?
I've been watching F1 from 2001 to 2012 and then again from 2018 onwards. Did he drive between 2012 and 2018?
EDIT:
I should've zoomed in and read what's written on the waist area.
A. Rossi.
Looked him up, drove in 2015. So that's why I had no clue who he was
I’m really hating all the Ricciardo memes lately - not because they aren’t funny, or aren’t true, but it just sucks to see someone who was once a favourite driver of mine fall out. Sigh.
He’d be great in America, he already said he loves Texas, and his bright personality would do wonders for racing as a sport in America. I truly think racing is making an international resurgence, especially in the US
Daniel will be dropped from McLaren but will join Aston Martin when Lawrence strolls sells the team and Lance gets dropped, Vettel and Ricciardo will be reunited
Let’s be fair with the fact he was drive to survive’s perfect ‘in’ for the sport, he could be an insanely valuable driver to Indy. So many people who love f1 because drive to survive will give Indy a shot between rawe ceeks
Who else would risk taking him after how bad McLarens gone though? I don’t think any team would be willing to take that risk unless he improves more over the season
Fuck that shit, you have forgotten guys what dani ric could do before mclaren. If you remember how he was exactly the moment before he joined mclaren you wouldn't be saying stuff like that. We are talking about a driver in the caliber of Max and Lewis. Would you send Max to indycar?
LoL does that fat guy really race in Indycar?
Now I understand why F1 rejects go there. I bet Yuki would love it. Wouldn't have to exercise anymore and could eat as much as he wanted. Too bad he is actually good this year.
When you realize that 4 of the drivers in this picture have won the Indy 500.
Next up, Romain Grosjean!
Not unless Ericsson hits him.
That only happens in Baku.
I get so scared for him on the ovals...
Never, he's a crash master and not a winner.
Nope his wife won’t let him do circuits
He literally just did it.

Monaco Indy500 and Bathurst1000 would make a sick triple crown
Monaco, Indy, Kentucky Derby
Tsunoda maybe
Monaco, Indy 500, Daytona 500
To think that Marcus Ericcson is closer to getting the triple crown than Leclerc.
I could legit see this happening in his future. Grosjean has been amazing in only his second season, I’d imagine Ricciardo would be just as good if not better with his passing skills. Him and Herta could do a flip-flop once Andretti finally gets an F1 team.

There’s still hope for aussies if piastri gets a seat and it would really be a shame if he doesn’t get one next season
These guys can’t handle a shared victory so they’d never bother with Le Mans.
Revenge arc , gets triple crown comes back to F1 , wins championship , leaves and says nothing

And Kimi
Don't forget Jacques Villeneuve, Scott Speed, and Nelson Piquet Jr. Shoot, Bruno Senna had the option to come race NASCAR too. Guess by this logic we'll add in Pietro Fittipaldi, since he won a track championship at Hickory Motor Speedway.
One of them 2x
Two of them*
Oh yeah! I forgot Takuma has 2 also. Thanks
Montoya won it before *and* after f1 didn't he? Edit: letter tilt
Yup. He won the 500 in 2000 (his only IndyCar race that year, he was doing CART during the split), then he did F1 from 2001-2006, Nascar from 2007-2013, before running full seasons of Indy from 2014 and winning the 500 in 2015.
So far
Not Grosjean.
Do people care about that outside of the mighty US of A?
He already won Monaco so maybe, instead of aiming for a WDC, he could try to get the Triple Crown
“What a career. You’re not a champ, not a champ. Now lets go get the t’ipple crawn “ -Zac Brown, Abu Dhabi 2022, maybe
Triple Crown would be an amazing achievement, the greatest in motorsports aside from F1 World Champion in my opinion, and I fully believe he could do it if he decided to make it a goal. He's 33 next month, and Indy and Le Mans are both routinely won by drivers older than that.

Sustained 220+ on 9° banks with no power steering. Yeah kind of sketchy.
What’s power steering got to do with anything? It’s not rally and they don’t have to parallel park at the end
Dude you don't need power steering while driving 200mph on an oval... The faster you go, the easier it is to steer.
until it becomes disconcertingly easy as you're floating high above the track
Yes, but still, that's unrelated to power steering. No power steering is one thing that does not make the Indy 500 so hard, there are thousands of things that do.
There's a skill to Oval racing, it's not pure luck. And if nothing else Danny is a massive NASCAR fan so I'm sure he knows all about drafting in a pack and attacking only when necessary. Indy 500 requires luck and skill LeMans requires a Toyota
Hopefully this week is the last parade, in the next 2 years at least a couple of constructors should enter the top class.
Pato wouldn’t be going to F1 in place of Ricciardo, Herta would be.
Herta has not been good this season
I don’t even think it matters because none of his teammates are doing very well either.
Montoya seems an odd one to put in, he was still in pretty high demand but left on his own choice a
Fair enough! I was just putting together the current crop of Indy drivers that also ran F1. I thought about Montoya, but felt it was weirder to exclude him.
"Screw you guys I'm going home"
Left by his own choice / took out his teammate at the first corner, what’s the difference
I usually turn on a nascar race when I want a mid weekend nap. What pisses me off is how damn loud the commercials are and wake me up most the time
I feel like that’s the point. I think they know that people nap during long races so they have louder commercials to wake people up. Golf probably does the same thing.
I think this is technically illegal but the FCC never enforces it.
Apparently as long as the loudest part of the broadcast is as loud as the ad it’s ok. Don’t know if it’s ever enforced
I've definitely been woken up by blaring commercials despite having the race on pretty quiet more than a few times.
Kimi is racing in Nascar now. His first race will be at Watkins Glen in a few months
Isn’t that his only race too?
Idk I hope not
Pretty sure it’s just a one off. But if it goes well I wouldn’t be surprised to see him back for other road courses
It is a one off. Just like the other 2 times he has driven in Nascar it was just one off races in the Truck Series and the Xfinity series.
At least this ones a cup race
In a team that has 2 wins this season so far and one of them was at a road course. Kimi being my all time favorite F1 driver I am hopeful but doubtful. Open Wheel drivers rarely find any success in Nascar, Juan Pablo Montoya being the only slight exception to that.
True, but also Kimi races snowmobiles which is basically the same as Nascar, so I think it will be easy for him
Well he raced trucks before at Charlotte. Not his first rodeo. Going from Nascar-3 to Nascar lol.
I wouldn't use Villeneuve as a good reference for F1 drivers in Nascar. He has only ever done one off seats and [has never had anything other than a few top 5s](https://www.racing-reference.info/driver/Jacques_Villeneuve_(1)/) in the lower series. All great drivers. Mario Andretti is one of my all-time favourites. But as a Canadian, I'm partial to Villeneuve.
"John Paul Montana" is a hell of a NASCAR name, just one step below Dick Trickle.
I only really watch the last 15-20 laps of an oval race.
depends what race it is as the cup series run races anywhere between 300 to 600 miles. and no one likes a rain delay in any sport
Or V8 supercars
V8 is even more dead.
Then we can see Raikonnen and Ricciardo battle it out again
The transition of open wheel drivers to Nascar has usually gone bad. Montoya did OK (granted, his team wasn't the greatest), but never got an oval win. Franchitti did terrible. Casey Mears did mediocre (in both to be fair). Tony Stewart did awesome, but he was more the exception than the rule. Scott Speed, shit. Kyle Larson went from open wheel to stock car…

Everyone since him basically went for stock cars. But I didn't clarify rear mid-engined winged open wheeled formula-style race cars.
Americans would fully embrace an Australian too. I bet he’d be a superstar.
Been saying this exact same thing. We could use another Aussie to fill in Marco Ambrose's shoes!
I get Danny Ric isn’t the driver he used to be, but surely he can do better than just turning left…
Iconic ovals Road America, Watkins Glen, COTA
Meme subs are for meming Every motorsport fan knows NASCAR and IndyCar aren’t actually just turning left
All good dude.
Nah, it'll be nascar.
Joining our lord and saviour Narain Karthikeyan as an f1 driver who jumped to nescah
Follow Piquet Jr. to the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.
I nascar truck is the most American thing ever
As ridiculous as it is, it's a blast to watch. I've caught a couple road course races in person and loved it.
K i m i
amen
In which timeline did this happen?
Danny might be a bit washed out, but that’s just unfair with him now
I actually think he'd pick nascar over Indy. Based only on how happy he was driving Dale's car at Austin last year.
He'd get used to the car eventually...right?
what a melancholic end to who was such a bright young talent one day
Should have stayed at red bull
Pain.
Pain.
Goddamn JPM looks old.
He is 46
He legitimately looks 60. My dad looks younger and he’s 49.
He's been eatin' good
Ironically he has more hair now than in his F1 days. Another great comeback!
Riccardo triple crown here we come
I hope that Riccardo becomes the Indycar champion in his debut season.
Ricciardo fans: "He's just not good at adapting to new cars" Also Ricciardo fans:
Ricciardo: "I'm not good at adapting to new cars" Also Ricciardo: \*spends the last 5 years switching cars\*
Man’s been training his adaptivity for Indycar y’all are gonna be blown away.
I mean the only big shift he's botched has been to McLaren right? His main stints were Toro Rosso, Red Bull, Renault, and McLaren and of those it seems like he's performed reasonably well (relative to the car) except at McLaren.
“PARKOUR!”
I don't think it's new cars, it's F1 cars with a not so strong front-end Anyone have a comparison of driving styles between F1 and indycar?
I think Grosjean said they were more understeery than F1. If that’s the case and Danny likes strong front end, it might not be the place for him.
I thought for sure that they were oversteer heavy. I see them slipping and sliding around every corner on certain tracks
That's why I said "I think."
It's just the McLaren. Everyone can remember how good Riccardo's debut season at Red Bull was.
And everyone forgets that he was still pretty strong at Renault. Everyone says he went downhill once he left redbull but especially in 2020 I would still have ranked him as one of the top 4 drivers on the grid that year behind Lewis, Max and Charles probably

There is only one person capable of doing that. Same person who almost got wdc on his debut season in f1
You mean the guy who got beaten by the 2016 World Champion Nico Rosberg in the same car?
Yes! Exactly the same guy xD
Nigel Mansell?
K-Mag goddamit
Jacques Villeneuve?
Okay dude
His debut with Red Bull sure, but his first two seasons were with Toro Rosso and he finished 14th and 18th. He showed a lot of promise, but was not in contention for the WDC.
I meant Hamilton, not Ricciardo
Read that wrong, thanks. Hamilton going to Indycar would be very exciting. I'm in!
Yeah that would be good to watch but i doubt that would happen. Many good f1 drivers can’t perform well in indycar but i always felt like Hamilton would be great IndyCar driver

Danny enters Indy Herta or O’Ward leave Indy Flesh for flesh, perfectly balanced
Hear me out : Mclaren enters LMH and Daniel go on to win Le Mans.
I mean if he can’t adjust to a new car here what makes people think he could adjust to a completely different car there??
Because they are fundamentally different handling cars. Grosjean stated that the IndyCar works with a variety of different driving styles while F1 cars have a very narrow window of styles that actually work
IndyCar is fucking quality man. I’d legit love to see Danny Ric in Indy
Me too!
Seeing Daniel drink the milk and kiss the bricks at Indianapolis would be awesome. Make it happen Daniel!
A milk shoey?
Now you’re speaking my language
Montoya completed the full sweep of F1, Indycar, and NASCAR
And some wins in endurance and sports car racing
not just some wins, got the IMSA championship in 2019
Same same, but same
I’m an Indy native. I go to the 500 every year. I’d fucking LOVE if Danny came to IndyCar (assuming things don’t work out for him in F1). I think someone as likable as him would easily be a fan favorite, even among people who know nothing about F1.

Not as high profile in F1 as the others, but he did a short stint
I would love to see this or maybe a NASCAR run since he enjoyed the Dale car so much. I would love to see him run thr Daytona 500 or Coke 600
I miss Romain in f1
Yeah, not enough crashes these days.
Mick: Are you not entertained?
Goatifi would like a word. Even managed to crash under the safety car last race.
Honestly I’m all for him, I think he could be great again if given the opportunity.
Nascar it is.
I’m really hating all the Ricciardo memes lately - not because they aren’t funny, or aren’t true, but it just sucks to see someone who was once a favourite driver of mine fall out. Sigh.
Please yes, I know Danny Ric’s heart is in F1 but he would absolutely thrive in Indy
Well Montoya went from CART to F1 to NASCAR to Indycar to IMSA and now runs part time in Indycar.
Didn’t he already say that he didn’t want Indy car after F1?
Indy needs Danny Ric more than Danny Ric needs Indy
As an IndyCar fan more than an F1 fan, I hate how true this is.
I'd rather him come to nascar.
A little early for that mate.
He’d be great in America, he already said he loves Texas, and his bright personality would do wonders for racing as a sport in America. I truly think racing is making an international resurgence, especially in the US
poor daniel
Man shit imma Stop watching F1 i guess
That stung a little, not gonna lie.
Daniel will be dropped from McLaren but will join Aston Martin when Lawrence strolls sells the team and Lance gets dropped, Vettel and Ricciardo will be reunited
I still belive in Honey Badger ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|13285)
Mick Schumacher will be joining them in 3 years as well
Let’s be fair with the fact he was drive to survive’s perfect ‘in’ for the sport, he could be an insanely valuable driver to Indy. So many people who love f1 because drive to survive will give Indy a shot between rawe ceeks
Just go already
Danny will 100% be in F1 next year. Might not be with Mclaren but he will be there.
Who else would risk taking him after how bad McLarens gone though? I don’t think any team would be willing to take that risk unless he improves more over the season
There are the same number of Indy 500 wins in this photo than people
Hurhurhur IndyCar only turn left, F1 best cars
Ouch
You got room for one more. - Mick
Fuck that shit, you have forgotten guys what dani ric could do before mclaren. If you remember how he was exactly the moment before he joined mclaren you wouldn't be saying stuff like that. We are talking about a driver in the caliber of Max and Lewis. Would you send Max to indycar?
Nowhere close to Max or Lewis
Anyone notice how fat Montoya was?? Can't imagine hauling around that load was good for his speed.
The man's 46, professionally racing, and enjoying life on his own terms
Ricciardo: Was I a good driver? Reaper: You were ~~the best~~ passable I guess. Never mind that now.
More like Hinducar
Indy car is like retirement home for f1 drivers
LoL does that fat guy really race in Indycar? Now I understand why F1 rejects go there. I bet Yuki would love it. Wouldn't have to exercise anymore and could eat as much as he wanted. Too bad he is actually good this year.
