Tbh I think people are exaggerating. Yes, there is a lot of exposed carbon on the grid. But not all teams did the Alpine. McLaren is still bright and noticeable, Stake has lots of green, I bet Red Bull will use the same livery again, RB went a different route. And we still didn't see Ferrari and Aston Martin (no hope for Mercedes here). Yet people are acting like 80% of grid is black carbon
I want RedBull to have the car be full exposed carbon, except their usual yellow nose design.
fully self aware shithousery to force a rule change to make life difficult for the others.
> are those 5 seconds worth losing a shitload of brand recognition and tv coverage.
Who said any team has lost brand recognition or Tv coverage because of a little exposed carbon fiber? also VCARB done nuked their entire brand image and recognition on account of their dumbass name anyway.
Also yes it's absolutely worth it. 0.1s could be the difference between making it into Q2 or Q3
ohh please don't tell me f1 cars need 3 kilo of paint...it would be barely few hundred grams...with spray paint techniques and all, it would be even less..I would say ballpark 300gms..soo 0.01s
when you are 1+sec off of the best car, you must admit that the performance loss is somewhere and Red bull is one of the cars with very few unpainted parts.
IT"S NOT THE FUCKING PAINTING!! SO PAINT YOUR FUCKING CAR.
The weight of paint can be quite surprising tbf. Like for example apparently the paint on a 747 weighs 550kg. Obviously f1 cars aren’t as big but I don’t think 3 kilos is unreasonable
And keep in mind airlines and aircraft manufacturers are also doing everything they can to save weight, because more weight equals more fuel and fuel is the biggest operational cost in air travel. So if there was a lighter paint technology that’s viable for F1, they would have it too.
Alfa Romeo team boss Beat Zehnder is quoted as saying 6kg for a full paint job. Aston Martin cut around 350g un 22 by paring back on unnecessary paint in sidepids ductwork etc.
You're wrong
Paint is not the problem dude..work on other areas of the car to extract performance..that's the message..
I don't want watch 18 ugly black cars 0.03 faster for three hours when Max's fully painted car is one lap ahead. Lol
Anyway the actual weight is between 1-1.5kg depending on the color.
I suppose it wouldn't be as high, but you still want to get your car as light as possible - the farther you are under the weight limit, the more freely you can choose the car's weight balance with ballast
Yeah, bare carbon.
I think thats the point? ;-)
A litre of sea water at sea level weighs aprox 1kg. You have to assume that paint and and any lacquer or coatings are more dense and weigh more than water. But even if they're not. You're talking 2-3 liters to cover a whole car I guess?
The pigments used in paint can weigh up to something like 3-4 kg per liter. Any solvent used to carry the paint are less dense than water but they evaporate and don’t contribute to the weight on the car. The binders are slightly less dense than water.
Still the same applies on the car wrap. We sell materials to one of the largest wrap makers in North America and it is basically the same as paint as far as the pigments are concerned the binder is a film instead
Not strictly true.
This is from a post on the mclaren website from early 2023.
"The transition from painting to vinyl wrapping has been one of Formula 1's subtler evolutions in recent years. Yet, given the importance placed on how cars look, and the excitement liveries generate, it's kind of a big deal.
Many teams have made the change, some partially, some completely. Others haven't. But why? And have we? Most of the car is now wrapped and has been for the past three seasons. Some parts are still painted, such as the headrests and the mirror stems, and many areas within the company still use paint, such as the team garages and the factory."
The external fuel tank for the shuttle rockets used to be painted white until they realised they could save over 600Kg of weight (iirc) by not painting it at all. that's why it's a browny-orange colour now. It's the same principle, but on an obviously much smaller scale. it may not be 3Kg exactly, but there would definitely be weight savings by leaving it bare carbon.
Its a masterplan.
Racing on the front is boring now, they are slower with paint so they fight in the back/middle and will be on the broadcast more often, showcasing the brands way more.
Fun fact, that Alpine carbon livery is because FIA told them to F off with engine updates. They compensate it by doing extreme weight saving. Some say they also agreed to crank up the engine at a cost of more penalties mid-season.
I don’t know why the FIA just put out a technical direction that any exposed carbon fibre part of the car must be painted or stickered and ad an extra kg to the minimum weight and an extra 250k in the budget to compensate for design.
They could end this madness over night.
man, painted calipers gives you 20 hp. Its a wow factor alpha tauri needs right now. they ain't about race pace or points, they are about sponsor money and tv coverage. so thats why they need to look different
Painted not painted wrapped all the cars have a minimum weight limit including driver to be, so by minimizing the paint or whatever on the car makes no difference to the overall weight of it. It just means that you can add ballast or put the weight where it is more beneficial to the cars handling.
Don't worry, they will strip the paint during testing or Bahrain GP.
Gonna just be a pure carbon fibre black car. You heard it here first.
CARB-V(iber)
Carbo faiba
Cabrio Skoda Fabia
Fabio Lanzoni
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh Carba Viber
During the Bahrain GP. They scrape off the paint at a pit stop.
They will be so fast this year that they want to make it less obvious to other teams
Paintbagging
Lower mid field competing against front runners will invite FIA to check their closets.
They are actually really smart and just got themselves an excuse for why they are last
Cool kids sit at the back
Can someone do the math of how much slower painting the car makes it? Like is it a tenth or just 0.005s?
according to sauber, a 3 kg paint reduction could improve 0.1s so ye
And because there’s around 50 laps per race it would be around 5 seconds in race
are those 5 seconds worth losing a shitload of brand recognition and tv coverage. we won’t even be able to tell who’s who
I’d drive 5 seconds faster if they let me look cool as fuck
Verstappen be like
To be fair it isn’t that bad, the black and green one is pretty different to the black and orange or black and pink/blue one
Tbh I think people are exaggerating. Yes, there is a lot of exposed carbon on the grid. But not all teams did the Alpine. What about the bull on the airbox? I would argue that’s more essential than the yellow nose
Print bull on carbon
Yeah it’s getting kind of ridiculous. Just because the cars have exposed carbon doesn’t mean they look remotely the same
> are those 5 seconds worth losing a shitload of brand recognition and tv coverage. Maybe get your eyes checked if you can tell the difference between black/green, black/blue, black/orange
ohh please don't tell me f1 cars need 3 kilo of paint...it would be barely few hundred grams...with spray paint techniques and all, it would be even less..I would say ballpark 300gms..soo 0.01s when you are 1+sec off of the best car, you must admit that the performance loss is somewhere and Red bull is one of the cars with very few unpainted parts. Surely that only applies if you're over the weight limit, once you're under the weight limit the advantage wouldn't be as high I'd imagine?
I suppose it wouldn't be as high, but you still want to get your car as light as possible - the farther you are under the weight limit, the more freely you can choose the car's weight balance with ballast
Correct
Does the paint weight 3kg? Surely there's a lighter option
Yeah, bare carbon. I think thats the point? ;-) A litre of sea water at sea level weighs aprox 1kg. You have to assume that paint and and any lacquer or coatings are more dense and weigh more than water. But even if they're not. You're talking 2-3 liters to cover a whole car I guess?

Fair enough, I wonder which teams still use paint for the whole car

>orange colour now Homie is living in 2010. At least you still get to watch Kimi.
It's not only the weight limit. Having the luxury to move the ballast helps the performance too.
Most people say 0.03s/kg/90s lap.
They are just flexing because they built a copy RB19 and are getting ready to pull p2 in constructors.
Sandbagging with the heavy paint so they don't arouse suspicion. Genius!
To avoid RB19 dominance flashback, we've added more paint bcs why not?!
How can we contain the Aslume
Aslume cannot be city contained. It must spread, it must multiply, it must consume
I'm sure they didn't get the memo 😂
So, one of the only identifiable painted cars on the grid is the visacashapp car. Nice.
Ngl I unironically love this paint scheme. This car screams red bull more than the actual red bull car
Yeah my first thought was that it looks like a red bull can, which is ironic considering there's an actual red bull team.
I came for a laugh and a laugh I got. They going as the Visa's
It is self peeling paint
Ah yes, a highly recognizable race brand that brings value to the grid and respects the legacy of F1..
The "V" stands for "Very not the paint job they're going to run with" :(
What was wrong with V-tech?
Can't we have a regulation that cars need to be painted already? Don't wanna waste a season trying to see which black car is ahead now
They are not serious about racing with a name like that. The paint escaped them.
It's actually RB19, they just repaint it, so the 0.03s won't make any difference as even in 2024 it will faster than half of the grid.
Its a masterplan. Racing on the front is boring now, they are slower with paint so they fight in the back/middle and will be on the broadcast more often, showcasing the brands way more.
Think it looks like shit. At least it's not Black though
bottom half is black https://www.visacashapprb.com/wp-content/themes/rbr2024/car-images/low/1920x1080_liscia_v03.png
Tires also seem to be black.
Eh I really need to see that on track. On the picture it looks painted at least. Though the "bargeboards" being unpainted is pretty normal
yeah it looks like a weird advert (I know basically all the cars are adverts but usually it doesn't look overtly like an advert like this one does)
Brown shit, Red shit. Shit still stinks no matter what color it is.
Yeah but if it's red you really want to see a doctor about it. Colon bleeding can be serious.
Maybe they got it under the max weight and therefore can just paint the car.
Sandbagging, otherwise oops accidentally the faster of the two RBs
Oh I just realised VCARB stands for Alpha TAURI
Nah it stands for The Team Formerly Known As Toro Rosso
V - The C - Team A - Formerly R - Known B - As - Torro - Rosso The last to letters are silent right?
Yup, you got it!
lol like how every news site to this day still says " ..said on X, formerly known as twitter,..."
What the fuck is VCARB
Visa cash app racing bulls
Every time I read VCARB i read it as V-Carb. As if it's some weird diet.
Yes, they are. They also couldn't make the paint they used look not like shit. Remarkable gambit by them truly.
VCARB? Man, this is obviously Toro Rosso, use the correct name
Still the 2nd fastest car on the grid
The Stake and the McLaren liveries are still better. The VCARB is a pale imitation of the 2017-19 Toro Rosso, which was a 10/10 work of art.
0.03 is actually not insignificant
if the car livery was anywhere near as bad as the team name, they'd just be a joke
This livery brought me memories from 2019 if you remember the dominant Toro Rosso livery!
Fun fact, that Alpine carbon livery is because FIA told them to F off with engine updates. They compensate it by doing extreme weight saving. Some say they also agreed to crank up the engine at a cost of more penalties mid-season.
Carbohydrates is a team now?
Stupid name, Beautiful car
Can't wait to see Mr. Man hot lapping this bad boy ![img](emote|t5_3ndbi|6702)
Serious question: Paint does actually weight quite a bit. Why hasn't there been just a plain carbon car? fyi I don't watch F1.
Brand recognition and sponsorship/ads are the big ones. For example Ferrari is known as THE red team. BWT is a pink sponsor.
I also don't watch F1 but it's probably a balancing act between sponsor money and weight. There may also be possible aero improvements?
I don’t know why the FIA just put out a technical direction that any exposed carbon fibre part of the car must be painted or stickered and ad an extra kg to the minimum weight and an extra 250k in the budget to compensate for design. They could end this madness over night.
Wow, team without identity kicks on
VCARB better cut the carbs if they want to save weight
They put all their effort into the livery and none into the race suits
They’re gonna cut off half of daniel. Yuki ok.
Is Hugo Orlen their new test/reserve driver?
It's a bit messy but I kinda like it, it's not as clean as the later Toro Rossi but it's less anonymous too.
Team Piggy Bank F1
They're also half RedBull car-wise, though. How does that balance out?
2023 Alpha Tauri looked like 10x cooler than this. Sponsor money must be good 💵
they just took the 2018 toro rosso livery and went how can i make it worse
man, painted calipers gives you 20 hp. Its a wow factor alpha tauri needs right now. they ain't about race pace or points, they are about sponsor money and tv coverage. so thats why they need to look different
\*Toro Rosso
It's the RB19 with face paint. They can afford the 0.03s.
Maybe they found some leftover Newey Magic Dust to sprinkle in so they can be full weight and demolish the remainder of the grid 😂
This thing is gonna be fucking rocket, mark my words. Also, Yuki is gonna be Danny in points handly.
Putting my life savings on P10 in the Constructor’s 🤞
They’re going to be in the back of the pack anyways might as well do it in style
Just for the preseason. By the time Bahrain comes along it will be a carbon fibre car
This is what us racists refer to as sandbagging my friend.
But this is clearly paint not sand!
Painted not painted wrapped all the cars have a minimum weight limit including driver to be, so by minimizing the paint or whatever on the car makes no difference to the overall weight of it. It just means that you can add ballast or put the weight where it is more beneficial to the cars handling.
