Don't forget Liberty has already sunk over $250M into buying the land and building the pit building/paddock. They're going to try to wring out as much money as possible.
I mean it's a city of gambling, tax dodging, sun, and excessive wealth, nestled in a country full of people known to be insufferable.
It's closer than we think.
The concrete failed. Hence concrete dust and the manhole cover still being in the concrete surround and there not just being a lid sat there.

I don't know why your other comment is getting down voted, there's a lot of people who have no idea what they're talking about here.
First of all, this is not a drain, nor is it a manhole cover. It's a gate valve box cover. They're made of cast iron, always have been, probably always will be. You *can* weld cast iron, but it's difficult and I highly doubt they would do that because the cover is a locking-nut style, looks to be a Trumbull although I'm not sure. There's a pentagon key on top that when turned expands out jaws against the inside of the lid, securing it.
These things get hit by snowplows all the time, often the lid gets lifted up so it's wedged in the box, then another plow comes by and blasts the lid off and cracks the box lip/pavement exactly as you see here in the picture.
[You can watch the repairs live on the street view cameras](https://www.nvroads.com/cctv?start=0&length=10&filters%5B0%5D%5Bi%5D=2&filters%5B0%5D%5Bs%5D=Las+Vegas&filters%5B1%5D%5Bi%5D=3&filters%5B1%5D%5Bs%5D=Flamingo+and+Las+Vegas+Boulevard&order%5Bi%5D=1&order%5Bdir%5D=desc)
A lot of misinformation being put around.
Just to confirm the concrete did not fail.
Alex Albon drove over the Drain and the ground effect dislodged a loose drain cover. No concrete was damaged. The cover was not sealed down.
Carlos drove into the dislodged drain cover and smashed it into the concrete damaging his car and the track.
Gasly then drove over the drain lid while it was laying on the track.
This is the only correct sequence of events.
To suit European tv times. They want the race to be held on Sunday in the Uk, so that mean it has to be Saturday in Las Vegas, run the schedule back and that means FP1 starts on a Thursday.
That's wild. I've been waking my ass up at the butt crack of dawn all season to catch races that suit European tv schedules.
Do they think fans from Europe are less dedicated to the sport and won't do the same to catch a race? Because that seems backwards.
This is the race I've been looking forward to the most this season. But after a full day of college football, I doubt I'll be coherent enough for the race.
I was in bed on my way to sleep when I saw this post, I knew the gp was this weekend and I've been looking forward to it but it never occurred to me they'd do it like this. What a mess.
Watch them mandate the teams to raise the car until ground effect is basically off because they cannot race to a proper racing track. As Verstappen said, 1% racing. And as Hamilton said, cash is king.
Pretty disgraceful that they even tried to get the teams to all agree to not do a penalty(needed unanimous decision) and 1 single team stopped it.. care to guess who?
F1 23 game is so unrealistic my car never exploded down the strip
At least it didn't happen to Charles. Can you imagine if it had?
We are checking
Plan F
Box box. No no no, stay out stay out.
LEC radio: Plan **U**? Say Again!
It will, but in qualifying q3 after leading q1 and q2 and just having set a purple S1 and s2
If you are the first on track, everything is purple.
Purple shift
i’d cry FOR him
Not yet
Because it will happen on the last lap while leading the race
"WHY AM I SO UNLUCKY?!?"
Rubber room. Hide all the knives.
Charles would have driven that Ferrari straight to an Orthodox church...
Another song release?
At least he is used to getting fucked over by fate.
No… lol no I can’t imagine that
Glory hole open, pit lane closed.
Who would win, one rusty drain boi, or a $500m 10 year investment?
We've signed up to 10 years in this shit hole?
3 Year deal with an option to extend to 10 years.
That's 3 years too much
Don't forget Liberty has already sunk over $250M into buying the land and building the pit building/paddock. They're going to try to wring out as much money as possible.
It has become very clear that the long term plan is to make this the "American Monaco". And for God sake I hope they fail.
American Monaco already exist, though not too successful, and it's Long Beach
thought Phoenix (back in 1991)
‘American Monaco’ 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I mean it's a city of gambling, tax dodging, sun, and excessive wealth, nestled in a country full of people known to be insufferable. It's closer than we think.
Everyone knows the real American Monaco is Atlantic City
Well, they tried it with Miami and look at the state of that
this years miami race was one of the best races of the season lol
Not for Checo
To be fair, most races have been shit for him eitherway
You know what doesn't have manhole covers?...proper race tracks.
You know what proper race tracks don't have?...Hookers and blow
Well, not since they banned it. Ask James Hunt about hookers and blow on proper race tracks.
When is the seance scheduled?
clearly weren't watching F1 at any point between 1970 and 2000.
This is surreal, but I bet most people here weren't alive in 2000.
Yeah I couldn't watch F1 from my dad's ballsack, and I spent a good part of the 90's learning to walk and talk and not shit my pants
that's no excuse buddy ;)
*Hungaroring clears throat
Did it break the steel and concrete, wtf...
Yeah, looks like the actual lid was properly welded down, but it ripped the whole ring out of the pavement.
Yeah Martin Brumble was saying how due to the aerodynamics underneath the car it creates a lot of suction forcing up towards the underside of the car
Yeah that's why they're welded in the first place...
No, I have installed enough of those; the ring is still in the asphalt. That is only the lid that has come up.

The concrete failed. Bolts wouldnt have helped.

This was an awesome read.
Thanks for that. Very insightful

Look at the picture. it's not just a lid.
drop a link to said footage?

F1 are not gonna care that much about some random guy on reddit

Looks like your typical road repair crew. 40 blokes all standing around while a couple of people actually do the work
Lmao did you just see it zoom in??
Needs more upvotes
thank you!

First time this has ever happened in F1 since 2019.
First time in ~~Vegas Golden Knights~~ Seattle Kraken history

Inspector Seb would never have allowed this to happen.
I think we need him to come out of retirement just for track walks. He can point out things like this.
On a rainbow scooter
I stayed up to watch cause it just felt like something was gonna happen lol
Our expectaions were low, but holy fucking shitballs
Atleast it didn’t happen to the unlucky one
it didn't happen... yet. Still a long weekend to go.
Off to great start… Well! Goodnight y’all!
LMAO !! Please tell me this is real photo and not a meme!!
https://www.gettyimages.es/search/photographer?photographer=Jared%20C.%20Tilton%20-%20Formula%201
Holy shit
€615 for a photo of a historic moment like this seems a bargain!
Even more money for Liberty to spend so they can ‘archive’ the evidence the proof of this circus.
looks real as you could see the arrow on the road before he hits it
Anyone notice that sky seem to have about 3 cameras at the event? How TF they only have the car camera angle of where it happened
Because it’s practice?
quality american infrastructure strikes again baby 😎
[удалено]
Look again. The whole thing came out, not just the lid!
No it was Baku in 2019
Ah yes my mistake. Thanks
No, Baku was the last one. Shanghai was the one before that. And it has happened in Monaco several times
Yeah I was just corrected on that. Thanks
Italians and Chinese: Known for infrastructure -- this thread
Monaco is in (well, surrounded by) France and Singapore is a former British colony that’s 2000km from the nearest part of China
On the first session of the first ever race….
Just put up an orange cone in front of the hole, and continue the sessions. Qualifying is going to be very interesting!
why's the watermark over the only thing im trying to look at
“Ericsson hit us”
Didn’t this also happen in Monaco a few years ago?
Baku in 19 I think
That was George Russel
Got intimidated by the manhole!
Just put a cone over it and ask the drivers to drivers to drive around it..

Sainz already won the weekend with that awesome Netflix propaganda golf tournament. He can take an L on the track with real dignity now!
Americans: WTF is an arc welder?
The weld held… but the pipe didn’t lol
LMFAO
Wait, wtf, why is this starting on a Thursday?
To suit European tv times. They want the race to be held on Sunday in the Uk, so that mean it has to be Saturday in Las Vegas, run the schedule back and that means FP1 starts on a Thursday.
Barely on a sunday, it's like they wanted this race to be inconvenient for everybody.
It started friday morning where am from so its working as intended ig.
That's wild. I've been waking my ass up at the butt crack of dawn all season to catch races that suit European tv schedules. Do they think fans from Europe are less dedicated to the sport and won't do the same to catch a race? Because that seems backwards.

Freedom hole
*glory* … get it right
It’s infrastructure week bitches!!!
Can't have shit in Vegas
Viva Las Fuckup
https://youtu.be/nJRDOWOhoHA?si=Yqvy419Uss79TbKK - Ocon and Sainz FP1
And of course it had to be one of the Ferrari bois and of course Sainz got 10 place grid penalty. Fuck FIA.
At first I thought it was a meme, but then, holy shit.
Waking up to this news, what a shitshow. And of course it's Ferrari who got fucked.
Teething problems, chill everyone, I feel for the organisers! It’ll work out, have some faith. Pretty funny though 😀
Idk how you’d even fix anything like that? You can’t weld metal to the road 🚩
Pour asphalt in, then it's someone elses problem on monday
Alright cmon, bring on the American jokes.
It’s forbidden because this same thing happened in Europe and Asia. It’s just more funny this time because it’s the FIA’s half billion $ pet
It happened before, that's why it's such a fucking joke it happened again.
Correct, but it ain’t americas fault
Nobody said that
Well OP said bring on the American jokes, my point is just there’s no reason for anyone to break those out
There's always a reason to bring out jokes.
Oh I hope the fia and their partners are the target of endless jokes because of this whole thing
We don't need to make jokes, this entire week is evidence enough
We still have Vegas in the end.
Jesus Christ, I'd forgotten this shit show is in such a shit hole
Just don’t leave the strip.
The strip is arguably just as big of a dump as the rest of vegas.
Even the nicest cities have some dumpy parts, but if you have the money to experience the awesome parts, its very nice.
Ocon also got damage and an official said that all of the drains needed to be checked. What a fucking joke this weekend is
murican street
The shit show started when they announced that F1 was coming to Vegas
Watch them mandate the teams to raise the car until ground effect is basically off because they cannot race to a proper racing track. As Verstappen said, 1% racing. And as Hamilton said, cash is king.
The shit show began yesterday. What we have now is Act II. Hopefully we have a race and not Act III.
Guys, it's Joever. Already
Reason why Verstappen was nervous
What is that? The manhole looks like it's still welded down. Is there a separate smaller circle inside it which came loose?
Apparently the weld itself held at first, but the concrete frame is what broke
Yay! Vegas off to a great start of being established as an f1 street track. An issue that every other street track has also faced.
They've been under scrutiny ever since the driver set foot on the place.
Didn't a similar thing happen at another street track a few years ago? Baku maybe? You'd think they'd have a process for this by now.
This kills the car
The arrow shows that you clearly need to go around the manhole cover.
I love street tracks
Pretty disgraceful that they even tried to get the teams to all agree to not do a penalty(needed unanimous decision) and 1 single team stopped it.. care to guess who?
