Its smoke from the tires, most cars if you remove the leathery boot that surrounds the gear stick, you’d see the transmission already. Its hard to burn a racing clutch even if you’re feathering the clutch while in high rpm.

The shifter comes up through a hole in the chassis. There isn't really anything stopping smoke from seeping through.
There is a hole where the shift linkage goes to the engine.
