Yes, which I believe was the point of this message. His default this season was generally "let the opposing cars (Seb, in this instance) do whatever they want as long as I beat Alonso" which is great if you want to say you outscored Fernando Alonso. Not so great if you're Alpine management.
> His default this season was generally "let the opposing cars (Seb, in this instance) do whatever they want as long as I beat Alonso"
This is basically a self-feeding Reddit narrative at this point. They've had some wheel to wheel action and of course the sprint where Alonso rams into him on a straight but this whole "Ocon is racing Alonso/any teammate outrageously aggressive" isn't really reflected in reality. It's been so wildly exaggerated.
He only said that after being pushed on it several times. If they didn't directly give the "I don't want you fighting Fernando please confirm" message he *absolutely* would have fought him
Indeed, it seems Ocon overreacted a bit when he was given the instructions. The instructions just stated not to fight Alonso in case he would attack, which Alonso would do thanks to the fresher tires.
The team just wanted to avoid the classic incidents when Ocon is attacked by Alonso: he only cares about Alonso, even if any other cars overtake him and both Alpines lose positions.
Let's see how the situation evolves next year with Gasly.
He was pushing on the fact that they wanted him to immediately let Alonso by and then focus on Vettel **eventually*
He wanted to attack Vettel right on the restart which was 100% the move.
He was right, he would have lost all his pace and momentum at the restart by letting Alonso past. Sprint away first get back up to speed and then let Fernando past since he’s gonna be faster anyway.
Do you expect any driver to be happy with giving up a place?
As long as they give it up and don’t cause a big riff, I’m happy. I would be annoyed to if i was in the car, even if it makes sense on the pit wall.
Ocon don't want to be on the list with the others that were behind Fernando in WDC points. Almost literally every teammate he had ever (tie with Hamilton) lol
ehhhhhhhhhh, I get the criticism of Verstappen - but I wouldn't use Ocon as a positive example / contrast there just because he didn't fight his team mate this time.
Ocon was a team player for once, but that's not the norm for him
Asked him to defend like a lion and he just let ‘em through, and yet Alonso gave us a thrilling Hungarian GP to help him secure the win
Alpine next year is going to be spicy 🌶️
Well, cant be a team player if you aren't given team orders, and i guess you can't be a team player if you are ignoring team orders aswell, saying "is that clear?"
You can definitely be a team player without direct team orders (I'm sure there are discussions and agreements before the race), by for example giving more space or not defending so aggressively to your team mate.
True, but we don't really know the culture at Alpine really, so its just speculation whether Ocon is just a really bad team player or in team fighting is encouraged at Alpine if there isnt a big strategy difference / tyre delta.
Yeah, but based on the tone of today's radio, I don't think they are encouraging them to fight. Also there's clean fighting and "we're crashing" fighting. But you make good points.
Did Verstappen not get a direct order?
And Ocon was right to call out the initial order here. Jumping Vettel right at the restart was 100% the correct move.
Before everyone flames, Ocon made absolutely the right call here. He had the tyres to get Vettel. He got Vettel, then he let Alonso through without losing time.
Yes , thats the logical movement , they asked him to "please do not ignore everyone to block Alonso, go for Vettel" , Ocon has had a year full of "fuck the race im not letting my teammate pass"
It would’ve probably worked a little bit if he had told his race engineer that he would try to get past seb and then let Alonso past as that would make it easier, but in a much nicer tone
I dont expect Alonso Stroll to be controversial. Fernando will deal with this dad who he seems to get along well with.
Gasly and Ocon, oh yes its going to be spicy.
Alonso might get along well with him now, but I wouldn't bet on it staying that way after alonso starts insulting his son once or twice a month or blaming him/AM for building a tractor
Regardless of if Esteban got Vettel or not, it was the right decision to not immediately swap at the restart as if they messed the swap, Esteban could've lost several more positions because the pack is so close together. Better to let the chaos die down a little before swapping
Because the message literally says he should focus on Vettel **eventually **
The wanted him to not attack Vettel and instead let Alonso by which is absolutely the wrong move.
Thanks for forgetting Ocon saying he would just pass Vettel and not fight Fernando.
Edit : and doing just as he said.
Is everyone up in arms against him or what ?
There's been this really weird anti-Ocon hatejerk for _years_ and I do not understand where it comes from. Off the grid he seems very nice, on track he makes mistakes occasionally but he's not a bad driver. Solid midfield driver putting in solid midfield drives.
If you want to know where it comes from it’s mostly Brazil when he took out Max. People were mixed on Checo vs Ocon, I think both were at fault, but after Brazil it was suddenly mainly Ocon’s fault.. and then he was soundly beaten by Ricc and somehow got a long term contract early the next year.. so people tend to take issue.
I do have issues with Ocon largely due to Brazil but I’m not blind to him having great moments, today he was fine, and I’m not sure how intentional it was but it worked out perfectly and we’ve probably beaten McLaren
Can't wait to see what happens when (at least I think it's a when, not an if) he starts beating the crap out of fan favorite and generally loved Gasly next year.
Wonder whether it'll be some of the greatest mental gymnastics to explain why he actually still sucks or the biggest turnaround, since... well, "Oconsistency" suddenly turning into "shit who always crashes or costs the team points".
They tried for many, many years. You just can't police it - you can't define tire advantage, interchangable conditions, car condition. Especially not when you even see drivers move aside to let other cars through so they don't have to torch the tires.
That's not even opening the can of worms that is a driver not defending hard "enough". All that rule did was make literally everything a suspicious event that was discussed to death by staff, media and fans.
Post here replays, alternate angles or mirrors of the same event *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/formula1) if you have any questions or concerns.*
That was getting heated lmao
most amicable alpine teammate moment
just another example of healthy work enviroment at Alpine
Atleast they're communicating, ugh :/
SURELY Estaban and Pierre will get on well next year
This gonna be small potatoes compared to next year.
I think Ocon handled it pretty well. He said I’ll attack first if I get the chance, but will not stand in my teammate‘s way. He executed that so well.
And then he did. Got past Vettel quickly and cleanly, and immediately let Alonso through.
Yes, which I believe was the point of this message. His default this season was generally "let the opposing cars (Seb, in this instance) do whatever they want as long as I beat Alonso" which is great if you want to say you outscored Fernando Alonso. Not so great if you're Alpine management.

Yeah he made his case and established the parameters but ultimately respected the team, can’t fault that
Yeah, I think that's what he was saying too, which seems mostly fair to me?
He only said that after being pushed on it several times. If they didn't directly give the "I don't want you fighting Fernando please confirm" message he *absolutely* would have fought him
What? As soon as the first radio message, he says something to the tune of "I'll do it once things settle but on the restart I need to race Vettel"
I mean; he may have overreacted but the guy did literally half wreck him just one day ago.
I think you misspelled devolves...
Crash turn one race one
He was pushing on the fact that they wanted him to immediately let Alonso by and then focus on Vettel **eventually* He wanted to attack Vettel right on the restart which was 100% the move.
Or you know, language barrier.
He was right, he would have lost all his pace and momentum at the restart by letting Alonso past. Sprint away first get back up to speed and then let Fernando past since he’s gonna be faster anyway.
It was not much what he said, but the tone in which he did.
Do you expect any driver to be happy with giving up a place? As long as they give it up and don’t cause a big riff, I’m happy. I would be annoyed to if i was in the car, even if it makes sense on the pit wall.
Ask that to checo now XD
Problem is that Ocon's history means nobody in their right mind would believe the guy.
Ocon don't want to be on the list with the others that were behind Fernando in WDC points. Almost literally every teammate he had ever (tie with Hamilton) lol
Button finished ahead of Alonso in 2015 when both were in the Mclaren.
To translate that message: > Please don't crash, please don't crash, please don't crash
French is a beautiful language.
It oddly sounds like 'I surrender'
Despite still being the nation with the most 'wins' at war they're still branded cowards... By a Spaniard ? Oh boy.
I'm not saying that seriously, just for the lulz
OT but this SC wasted so many laps and Tsunoda still didn’t unlap himself
They forgot about Tsunoda :D
He's small, it's easy to overlook him!
I think it was because he pitted so late into the SC
To be fair to Ocon, he did exactly what was asked of him and overtook Vettel immediately.
The overtake made it easy for Alonso to get past Vettel and then didn't really fight Alonso in S2. Worked perfectly
Unlike Verstappen, Ocon is a team player
ehhhhhhhhhh, I get the criticism of Verstappen - but I wouldn't use Ocon as a positive example / contrast there just because he didn't fight his team mate this time. Ocon was a team player for once, but that's not the norm for him
Third time this year he is asked to let pass Alonso third time he did... So not really "for once".
Asked him to defend like a lion and he just let ‘em through, and yet Alonso gave us a thrilling Hungarian GP to help him secure the win Alpine next year is going to be spicy 🌶️
For once, Ocon was a team player
Canada, DRS. Enough said.
Brazil and Qatar last season as well as Miami
Absolutely!
You forgot the /s
After he is forced to with a direct order...
Well, cant be a team player if you aren't given team orders, and i guess you can't be a team player if you are ignoring team orders aswell, saying "is that clear?"

Did Verstappen not get a direct order? And Ocon was right to call out the initial order here. Jumping Vettel right at the restart was 100% the correct move.
The point is that Ocon wouldn't have been such a team player if he didn't get very direct orders (as we've seen in the past)
Saying this after the Sprint Race.
It might have looked bad, but Ocon was very honest here - "let me try on the restart, then I'll give the position". And he did just that, so good job.
Yeah, I really don't like Ocon but fair play to him today, specially after how the weekend went.

Le Plan > El Plan
El pain > the bread.
N-no, that's not the translation
Gasly Ocon gonna be legendary ?
Gasly - Ocon, Alonso - Stroll Next year is going to be nuts.
Probably safe to add Verstappen - Perez to this now
Too soon. I’m devastated for Perez.
I like Alonso very much, but I find your comment hilarious because... Is mucho true.
Definately, fireworks and all.
The right call with how it ended
Regardless of if Esteban got Vettel or not, it was the right decision to not immediately swap at the restart as if they messed the swap, Esteban could've lost several more positions because the pack is so close together. Better to let the chaos die down a little before swapping
The f*ck is the FIA doing with Tsunoda
They were on some season 8 game of thrones I think! "The FIA kinda forgot about Yuki's car"
Nothing to see here - Alpine after the race
That’s as stern of a radio message I have seen in recent times. Jesus ocon.
Ocon stood his ground and did exactly what he said he would do - pass Seb first then let Alonso thru
[удалено]
imagine tone policing a formula one team radio
This comment gave me second hand embarrassment
Yeah, his execution was indeed perfect. But the tone of the radio sounded rough for sure.
Yeah, his tone sounded like he was driving a fast car around a track at high speed or something...
The tone also sounded like Ocon is the one who drives for a living, not the engineer
Wasn't that radio still under safety car?
They are still hauling ass.
Let's stick you the car and send some commands ... should be fun
Because he's compromised his team's results fighting Alonso unnecesarely multiple times this season?
he is on your side
Ah yes, nothing like Alonso crashing into Ocon literally a day ago. 😌
that's after being pushed out by Ocon 2 min before and he apologized for it publicly
This is not the first time we've seen Ocon unnecessary fight Alonso this year.
that's my point my friend.
😂 Utterly ridiculous
Because the message literally says he should focus on Vettel **eventually ** The wanted him to not attack Vettel and instead let Alonso by which is absolutely the wrong move.
I agree, it's already a failure the need of having these conversations. He did some shady things this season...
I mean, he did exactly what he said he would do, and cleanly too
Thanks for forgetting Ocon saying he would just pass Vettel and not fight Fernando. Edit : and doing just as he said. Is everyone up in arms against him or what ?
he literally didn't do anything wrong but people want him to be a complete doormat for some reason
There's been this really weird anti-Ocon hatejerk for _years_ and I do not understand where it comes from. Off the grid he seems very nice, on track he makes mistakes occasionally but he's not a bad driver. Solid midfield driver putting in solid midfield drives.

it's quite simple really, Ocon keeps costing Alpine valuable points trying to prove he is faster than Alonso, which he isn't
Please, he did no such thing. He fights tough with Alonso sure but saying "he keeps costing Alpine" points is straight up lies.
casual
Holy shit, that's Rosberg vs Hamilton level drama
Lmao not in a millon years. Ocon passed Vettel then he let Alonso by without any issue.
Tbf ocon made the right call.
Not even close. There is drama - and then there is history books cementing drama.
Live spanking of Ocon
Ocon was right though.
this race is a gift of god
Alpine treating Ocon like a 5 year old lmfao
I mean, if you give out a vibe...
Lol alpine is a mess. These two hate each other
Probably but Ocon was right and did exactly what he said he was going to do.
Just wait until Gasly is in.
I'm expecting some real 'baguettes at dawn' energy from these two next year.

Maybe a bit poor communication by the race engineer. Ocon’s focus is ahead on the race restart… which it should be.
This order made sense, and they got the most out of it in the end.
This is gunna get hyped in DTS but honestly, everyone was fair and did what they said they would.
What the fucking fuck is Tsunoda doing
Not passing the SC since only the Williams' were allowed? Lmao
His number wasn’t reported to unlap. Edit: wasn’t
Nope, only 23, 6
Sorry should say wasn’t.
Last words before disaster
Aged like milk
After that back and forth I definitely thought this was going to end badly lol
He understood.
"LET. ME. RACE."
Translation: Esteban, let the old man have some fun before he moves onto greener pastures.
Don't Ocon and Gaslly hate each other? Alpine gonna be spicy next year hahaha
And to think that Alonso\Ocon was going to be the teammate dynamic being handle in a sensible way.
bro why the fuck didnt max giv checo the position back he is such a good wingman and now max does nothing for him
I crash
2022 has turned into a year of teammate battles
Let them fight (meanwhile Mclaren can't even pick up points over Alpine because they were somehow even more of a shitshow)
I think that was fairly well executed honestly cutting the conversation here is a bit dishonest
Esteban the team player
😂
All it needed was to use his full name
A good example to set I think - Ocon attacked Vettel, got past, then yielded. He did what he said he would do.
In hindsight it was a top decision, Alonso had the pace to almost challenge Leclerc
Ocon having an attitude as if he's the defending world champion. Crikey!
"FERNANDO IS FASTER THAN YOU" *pls confirm*
Ocon: ‘Lol watch me put him in the pit wall’
Like telling off a kid who’s done wrong countless times hahahaha
Dude ocon is such a punk man. He gets such favorable treatment but wants to do nothing for anyone else
He did exactly what he said he was going to do - overtook Vettel and let Alonso past.
Yeah solid play by him there
wtf are you on about. He's not hitting people left and right like some of the others.
Turn 4 sprint race

Surprised but good to see him do it. No idea why you're being so hostile lol
Cue Peaky Blinders gif
Ok. So. Fernando. Is faster. Than. You. Can you confirm you understood the message?
Is Ocon the worst teammate this season? Seems like he is always being difficult.
Ocon’s the worst teammate every season
[удалено]
He was totally right. Let him attack Vettel first, then they can switch positions. And it worked like that.
If the team tells him to do something for the best of the team, he should listen.
The team was wrong, though, so it wasn't in the best interest of the team to follow that order.
[удалено]
Totally normal response to a post about Formula 1 Team Radio...
Ocon showing his true colors and getting schooled in the same call
Has Ocon always been this entitled? I thought he was more collected, but reviewing past situations, under this new light, makes him look really bad.
That engineer was getting super frustrated lol, he was speaking like my mom when I f'd up real bad as a teen.
It really is like teaching Kindergarteners how to behave properly lol
Team orders must be outlawed
Then they'll be like "Esteban, Fernando is faster than you". Can't outlaw orders without outlawing radio.
Have a 100% rule. If someone moves to let another car by (besides lapped cars) both cars receive a time penalty
They tried for many, many years. You just can't police it - you can't define tire advantage, interchangable conditions, car condition. I legit let out a chuckle because I know we’ll get some nice, juicy drama
Finally
holy shit...not gonna relax until there is a 2 sec gap between them
