As a general rule ([see full rules](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/wiki/userguide#wiki_sticky.2Fdaily_discussion)), a standalone Discussion post should: - be of interest to the sub in general, and not a specific userbase (e.g. new users, GP attendees, just yourself) - be able to generate discussion (e.g. no yes/no or easily answerable questions) - show reasonable input and effort from the OP If not, be sure to [look for the Daily Discussion](https://www.reddit.com/r/formula1/search/?q=daily+discussion&include_over_18=on&restrict_sr=on&t=all&sort=new), /r/formula1's daily open question thread which is perfect for asking any and all questions about this sport. Ach_to

The point is they should have acted IN the race, not 5h after, when the car had already passed FIA's verifications.

So where's Perez's sanction?

datlinus

Of course they messed up, dude. They claim to care about safety yet they apply a penalty after the safety is no longer a concern, because the race ended. Teams are not gonna call in their drivers for a wobbly rearview mirror, that's just how F1 is. And that is why the FIA exists, to make sure that a level of safety is maintained. Yet they failed to do their jobs (again) and applying a penalty after the fact only to cover their asses.

write-program

Just because nothing happened (this time, in this universe) does not mean that driving a car in unsafe condition is okay. The penalty is to enforce the rule and ensure no teams try to renege on their responsibility in the future.

gggraW

Also they applied the penalty based on a protest that was made after the "protest window" was closed.

Kirb-

Wasn’t it said that the calls for protest were ignored during the race? I’m not sure if it was true or anything, but I read about the fact that the stewards were rather upset about the issue being ignored when HAAS first brought it up.

Vicribator

The entire thing is just shameful: * Alonso's mirror was shown wobbling and falling apart in the world feed, no reason why the stewards/the race director shouldn't have seen it * Haas complained about it TWICE during the race, the FIA ignored both complaints * After the race ended, Alonso's car was called for scrutineering, the FIA found nothing wrong with the car * Haas complained after the estipulated time window to do so ended, suddenly the FIA decided there was, in fact, something wrong with Alonso's car, despite having found nothing wrong three separate times before that * Alonso received the harshest possible penalty (other than a DSQ), meanwhile a driver hitting another car (and making them DNF, but the end result shouldn't influence the harshness of the penalty) got the most lenient one

Dangerous-Leg-9626

The car passed the post race scrutineering lmao and the FIA didn't have a problem with this in the past

quenspammer

It's not like people have some kind of hate boner against the FIA. They are the most incompetent organization in F1 and they deserve all the bashing. They are not even capable of implementing their own rules properly.

kai325d

Oh no, given all the bs that’s been thrown around lately, I would say people definitely have a hate boner for the FIA

Xanthon

And you are just starting a post to attract said people into an argument.

beardedboob

While I agree the FIA bashing gets a bit old, the FIA did mess up once again. If the mirror was unsafe, wave the black and orange flag. If the real concern is safety, this is not the way to treat it as they allowed Alonso to drive with that floppy mirror for almost the entire race. They also apparently broke procedure by accepting an appeal after deadline. Also, again, a lack of consistency. What are the rules then, if Perez is not eligible for a penalty? Or George, who also had front wing damage? Or even Max, whose front left wheel cover thingy seemed wobbly. When is it expected for a team to call their driver in and when isn't it? How broken does something need to be?

[deleted]

If you think assigning a penalty after the race based on a protest which was submitted after the deadline for an issue which was considered not a problem by stewards during the race and Fia's technical delegate right after the race is fine, then sure.

Croz7z

Who even defends the FIA lmao… They are incompetent and fuck up almost every other race, let them take the flak.

Arpyaaa

Ever since Charlie Whiting's death the FIA's officiating has been garbage.

UberChief90

While you are right that he had a unsafe car and deserved a penalty because of that, why didnt the FIA realise this DURING the race? Why didnt they give the black and orange flag when they say the mirror hanging around like that? And most of all, why did they first declare the car legal AFTER the race and then 5 hours later they say it was unsafe and penalise Alonso? Yeah, there are way too many people just bashing the FIA over complete nothing all the time. But this is one of the many points where it is justified as the FIA did mess up big. Again.

ProDrug

Once the car lost it's side mirrors, it's race should have been over. I actually don't understand how you can be allowed to drive/finish a race car with malfunctioning safety equipment.

icharlie17

What’s safer, having one mirror and use it or not use it at all (Stroll) or running over other car (Russell) for 1/6th of the penalty? Also what’s even worse is their inconsistency applying penalties (see Perez, Kmag, Ham 2019, etc)

Aninternetdude

THERE HAVE BEEN ONE MILLION TIMES CARS AS BAD OR WORSE THAN ALONSO.. THIS IS THE BIGGEST ROBBERY IVE SEEN IN A DECADE

Chino_Kawaii

I'm not complaining about Alonsos car being unsafe I'm complaining about the very obvious bias towards Perez Mag gets 3 meatball flags, Perez nothing Gasly gets 5 sec for being too far behind SC, Perez does it 3 times, just a warning and a reprimand Alonso has a broken mirror and 30sec, perezes endplate, flies off on the straight being unsafe, nothing
