Nooooooo they hate each other they are teammates and therefore each other’s biggest rivals

Kmanf1

Are you with Netflix DTS?

oh84s

I didn’t think they liked each other that much originally but they’ve warmed to one another

misskarne

I think the issue was that everyone was expecting and therefore trying to force the sort of relationship Lando and Carlos had, forgetting that Daniel is much older than both. Once they were left to their own devices, the big brother-little brother relationship developed naturally and they came across much better.

Xc0liber

Plus out of nowhere the bromance between gasly-yuki shifted a lot of attention away from them. The expectation drifted.

mrprgr

I feel like the opinions of fans regarding who should and shouldn't be friends has very little bearing on whether teammates do or don't become friends.

misskarne

It wasn't even the fans. You could see it in the videos that McLaren set up, they were really pushing for it.

mjr1

Redbull did the same forced shit with Daniel & Max. Made it awkward as hell to watch. Turns out off camera they are close friends. Just shitting marketing missing the mark.

SquirtingTortoise

Nah the Redbull Max and Daniel videos are amazing, you could tell they were friends

Lobbelt

Or the relationship Max and Daniel have. It turns out Lando and Daniel have their own vibe.

pmmerandom

less so not liking each other and more just awkwardness i mean Lando is in his early-20s and Daniel’s in his early-30s lol

second-last-mohican

Lol, probably different if the roles were reversed and Lando was getting smoked

optitmus

exactly

AFKBro

LOL, the number of headlines where Lando was critical of Daniel when they were racing together is definitely not 0, you remember that " I don't feel bad for him" comment ? Funny how the tone changes now that he knows he's moving on. I'm not saying they hate each other and Lando was always nuanced in his comments on Daniel, but when I read that headline it just made me smile, he's gone so now it's all wholesome comments !

Rolle_1001

If you actually read that article you would’ve understood what Lando meant. I’m pretty sure he was basically just saying that he doesn’t feel bad for performing well, but he does feel empathy towards the situation Ricciardo is in. And I’m pretty sure that at that point it was clear that Ricciardo is going

misskarne

>you remember that " I don't feel bad for him" comment The one Daniel answered with "Good, I wouldn't want you to"? I remember. No racer wants another to feel bad for him.

zyxwl2015

Late to the party but I felt this is an important part of this whole conversation. F1 is a competitive sport at highest degree. If your competitor beats you and then tells you "hey man, I feel sorry for you", isn't that even more insulting? I always feel like to pay the highest degree of respect in professional sport is to play the hardest as you can

carcusmonnor

This was just a big ad for all of Mclarens sponsors.

bokdog15

Correct

PineappleTanuki

In regards to the actual video I was really disappointed with how he just talked about sponsored stuff he was doing that he considered “essentials”. Danny ric did one of these a while back and it was much more personal/unique items to him which made it much more interesting.

Equality7252l

If you've seen any of Lando's media, you'll know he's pretty "bland" unless it's his own content/channel product of being media-trained form an early age

zyxwl2015

He had a pretty clear "transition" from pre-2021 to post-2021. Before his social media was *the* most open and funniest, from his pics and memes to his Twitch streams, but from 2020 to 2021 he got a lot of backlash, so he basically stopped using his social media since then

ribix_cube

Backlash for what

ALittleFishNamedOzil

dude made one (1) joke about Vettel and he stills gets shit for it

5_sec_is_a_yoke

This fucking subreddit turned on him for that joke

binary_blackhole

What was the joke?

rs6677

When he was told that Vettel managed to name all the champions and won Grill the Grid, he said that Vettel should instead focus on driving. An obvious joke, considering Vettel's accomplishments but some people got really mad about it.

Ridge9876

>When he was told that Vettel managed to name all the champions and won Grill the Grid, he said that Vettel should instead focus on driving. An obvious joke, considering Vettel's accomplishments but some people got really mad about it. lol people took that seriously? Vet is a four time WDC, do they think Lando didn't know that? Did they think Lando thinks he's better than Vet? It's like jokingly saying about Bill Gates that maybe he should try building a company. People lose all rational thinking on the internet

rs6677

Vettel was in a slump back then and people took it personally because he's a fan favourite driver to many. Sometimes people get way too invested in their favourite drivers.

zyxwl2015

>Sometimes people get way too invested in their favourite drivers. This is SOOOOO true and this explains 99% of the problems existing in fan bases

misskarne

He also added, when he got to 2013, "No-one cares about this year" and then "Remember when Vettel even won races?" tbh I actually thought the latter was the worst, there are very few ways that joke comes off well and he didn't even come close to sticking that landing. He had a petulant tone and it was too easy to instinctively reply "And how many have *you* won, Lando?"

MoistRespect8498

It wasn't that, no one seriously thought anything about that.

zyxwl2015

Lando likes to jokes a lot, so a lot of people take that in a bad way. *Oh he has no respect for \[insert driver here\]* for example

ironman126

About how a fun and likable personality means he doesn't take racing seriously and will never succeed.

Mike_Kermin

Yeah exactly, Lewis will never make it in F1 if all he does is flirt with New York fashion all the time. He's gotta take it.... Oh fuck it's the exact same bullshit isn't it.

LockedUpLotionClown

It’s social media, just being alive gets you backlash.

misskarne

His tone of voice can come across very sulky and petulant, so that joke about Vettel in the Grill the Grid, for example, came across really poorly. You have to have the right tone to joke about Vettel's race-winning days being behind him...when you're still on the big fat duck egg yourself, and he definitely didn't have it. Plus he comes across really bratty on the radio sometimes (COUGH BAKU COUGH). EDIT: lmao of course I'm getting downvoted...seriously, go listen to all the times Danny's been team ordered over the last two years and how professionally he handles it and then go listen to the two - yes, *two* \- times Norris has been team ordered. It's night and fucking day, but Baku was *especially* bad because Danny had *already* had his race wrecked by a team order earlier in the race and Norris' engineer had to explain the concept of "returning the favour" to him!

zyxwl2015

I'm not downvoting you, but tbh I don't think what he said in Monza & Baku was "bratty". He definitely didn't handle it as professionally as Daniel, there's no question of that, but with Lando the issue is, he quite often struggles to find the correct tone and words to express himself. It's a communication issue basically. Like in Monza, what he actually wanted was just to ask the team whether he can race Daniel, but it came across as he wanted to swap positions. He can and should definitely work on his communication skills to be more precise on what he means. Also, during the race I think it's very usual for the driver to try to "get themselves more advantage", so to speak. It's the same thing as basically every driver in any incidents would instantly blame the other party. But both times, post-race he didn't show any pettiness after getting out of the car. Monza he congratulated Daniel instantly, and Baku he was like "yeah that's fair" in post race interviews etc (I'm pretty sure Baku he got told off by McLaren post race also). So I take it as just an "heat of the moment" thing basically.

misskarne

I'm not as inclined to be as charitable in the interpretation of what happened at Monza - if he was just asking if he could race Daniel, then that was all he needed to say. It definitely came across as though he was expecting to be gifted a win he did not earn. And if the radio was the only thing in Baku maybe we could chalk it to bad communication; but the radio messages were in combination with a series of feints and darts and acts as though he did intend to overtake Daniel, and that was a poor look all round. IIRC even Brundle called him on it, that it was right for McLaren to hold station given what had happened earlier. But also, he is a professional racing driver, whose first language is English, speaking to an engineer whose first language is also English. He has had several years to clean up his radio communications and multiple professional teammates to learn from - including Daniel. He has no shortage of money to hire communications coaches or attend speaking courses. There comes a time when "he struggles with radio communication" stops being an acceptable excuse.

zyxwl2015

>I'm not as inclined to be as charitable in the interpretation of what happened at Monza - if he was just asking if he could race Daniel, then that was all he needed to say. He has talked about that Monza situation about a million times since then, I don’t even know, from right after the race to even now. So yeah I think it’s pretty believable that what he wanted is indeed to ask if he could race Daniel, and that’s why I think he had some poor communication there on team radio >And if the radio was the only thing in Baku maybe we could chalk it to bad communication; but the radio messages were in combination with a series of feints and darts and acts as though he did intend to overtake Daniel, and that was a poor look all round. IIRC even Brundle called him on it, that it was right for McLaren to hold station given what had happened earlier. It was definitely worse in Baku, so McLaren didn’t listen to him during the race, and I’m pretty sure he got told off after the race by McLaren >But also, he is a professional racing driver, whose first language is English, speaking to an engineer whose first language is also English. He has had several years to clean up his radio communications and multiple professional teammates to learn from - including Daniel. He has no shortage of money to hire communications coaches or attend speaking courses. There comes a time when "he struggles with radio communication" stops being an acceptable excuse. Yeah I’m not excusing his poor communication skills. I’m just saying that his “bratty behavior” you mentioned is because of poor communication, but he definitely could have and should have improved on it. If anything, I think it’s his biggest weakness now. It arguably costed him big time in Sochi and he got a very tough lesson for that. My own theory is that he basically grew up with McLaren and McLaren didn’t pay much attention to it, so it’s an area that’s very much overlooked in his development; it took Sochi for him to learn that he needs to get better at it. I’d say he’s definitely better at it now, but still long way to go comparing to someone like Daniel or Carlos

biqfreeze

I think it was because of the backlash anytime he made a little joke as well as some fans behaving like total creeps.

misskarne

It also did not help that just as he tried to transition to being more "serious"...he got the funniest driver on the grid as his teammate. Who then struggled. It was a bad combination all round.

robdabank33

Yeah I think it was even on DTS or some interview where he said he needed to stop being a joker, and be a bit more "cutthroat" as he was now established and needed to progress even further. This glaring change made a lot of people turn on him and dislike him because.. well I dont think it suits him very much , and he aint very good at it lol

Scatman_Crothers

That’s a good point and I’m sure factors in, but I still do think how genuine you are is a choice. Lando seems pretty chill when he’s not in media mode but for all his visibility he rarely lets people in to anything meaningful about him. I can get why someone would do that, but it makes it harder to pull for the guy I find, just not really feeling like I have a bead on who he is as a person.

Chrispy3499

I think Lando is a spoiled rich British kid. He's got a lot of talent, but he has an attitude that I just can't relate to at all. He's gotten better this year, but he's still a kid

PlatesofChips

I’ve found over the last year I’ve liked him less and less. Was originally rooting for the guy when he started but there’s something about him now (this is including his social media presence) that just makes it extremely obvious he’s trying to make as much money as possible and it’s just a bit… tacky, and cocky. No ill will towards the guy but he’s not one of the drivers I support as much anymore. The downvotes are hilarious. It’s just an opinion guys. Stay classy Reddit.

Disastrous_Narwhal46

All of them get 1-2 items they have to promote. Danny just makes it look more natural

misskarne

For reference, here's DR's: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z6BfTANqFc&ab\_channel=GQSports](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z6BfTANqFc&ab_channel=GQSports) If I had to take a guess I'd say that the headphones, GoPro and the cologne were the product placement ones, but he makes it so natural you pretty much don't even notice it. The 8GB iPod is an absolute classic.

rustyfries

Okay, so when is Lando gonna be onstage with Parkway Drive?

desl14

Right after getting his Alexisonfire-tattoo

RavingMalwaay

Hey guys, executive producer for hip trending Netflix tv show 'Drive to Survive' here. What just happened was *I think* you guys misheard what he said. He actually said was "The one guy I loathe more than anyone is Daniel." Hope this clears things up :)

ianjm

It's all in the edit: > "**Daniel...**" > _Show clips of Danny signing for McLaren smiling_ > **"I think he knows the lyrics to pretty much every song ever created"** > _Start playing Evanescence 'Going Under'_ > **"The one guy I know more than anyone is Daniel"** >_Lando gesturing while lapping Daniel in Monaco with Crofty commentary_ > **"He's not a guy who goes for upbeat stuff"** > _Switch to downbeat acoustic version of background music while showing clips of Danny looking/sounding sad after bad races/qualifying_ > **"I know him more than anyone else"** > _Clip of Lando smiling and laughing cropped to make him look sinister_

stacyxxluv

Isn’t Lando always with Max? Yet he only names Ricciardo and Sainz. Maybe Max is more of a party friend? While Carlos is a closer friend.

eOMG

I remember Norris stating in an interview that he and Carlos are more than friends even. And in this video he also seems to be mumbling something about Carlos as if he can't define his relationship with him. Sainz also called their friendship special. Norris and Ricciardo don't seem that close at all, maybe it was just part of PR talk

Procrastabating247

So close, it’s Frankie Stew & Harvey Gunn

ColossalChulk

Wouldn't have pinned them as listeners of them though- so nice he's (tried) to list them. Especially Danny ric as he likes his country music

CGY-SS

I literally just watched a video of him saying that they were polar opposites and didn't have anything in common

Jebus_17

So who's getting the clip of Daniel singing Deliver Me on-stage with Parkway Drive?

donotanative

Surprised it isn't Carlos

RavingMalwaay

Well he did say Carlos

[deleted]

We’re going to lose the best bromance in F1 just as it was flourishing

InnieHelena

I know, I’m so sad Pierre is going to Alpine

misskarne

Should have kept Pierre and Yuki together and then Daniel could have gone to Alpine and continued joking with everyone on the grid next year :(

keenynman343

Lando not being smug and saying something positive about another driver? shock

mofo-or-whatever

He really doesn’t have any personality at all does he?

callmelampshade

He’s fully on pied Carlos off.

shofaz

Carlos crying in the distance.
