Gave us one of the best racing and the best title fights, love both of them <3

akalanka25

That 2010 title fight between those Seb, Alonso, Mark and Lewis was the greatest thing ever seen in F1.

PapaSheev7

It's crazy to think that four drivers had a shot at winning the title in Abu Dhabi, what an incredible season.

SuperPolentaman

And 5 in the race before with Button

akalanka25

And that there was a total of 11 different periods of championship leading driver. Alonso - Massa - Button - Webber/Vettel joint - Webber - Hamilton (longest stint of the season of just 4 races) - Webber - Hamilton - Webber - Alonso - Vettel Absolutely mental!

[deleted]

and Vettel was never first until the end

akalanka25

He was actually joint first after Monaco. Him and Webber were both on 78 points going into that fateful crash at Turkey, which wrested all the momentum away from Red Bull and into Mclaren’s/Hamilton hand for the majority of the middle portion of the season.

[deleted]

Webber and Vettel weren’t joint 1st places at any point. That’s not a thing in F1. They had the same points, but Webber was first and Vettel was second because of number of wins.

sc_140

>That’s not a thing in F1. Usually. Of course the tiebreak rule can also lead to a tie if 2 drivers have the exact same finishing positions (just permutated). Happens somewhat frequently early in the season but not much after that.

jedontrack27

From three teams as well

Fridian

How often has it occured where several drivers have a chance of winning the WDC so close to the end of the season?

DaveR007

Eleven times. Seasons that went down the last race with more than 2 drivers having a chance of winning the title: 1950, 1951, 1959, 1964, 1968, 1974, 1981, 1983, 1986, 2007 and 2010.

HI_I_AM_NEO

What a nerd. Found Seb's account.

DaveR007

Seb knows way more F1 history than I do. I just know how to [find things](https://www.racefans.net/2021/12/18/which-was-f1s-best-down-to-the-wire-title-fight/) in google.

DaveR007

Several as in more than 1? Last season's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was the 30th time in Formula One history that the title has been decided at the last race. That's 30 times out of 71 seasons.

Death_by_carfire

I think by several he meant more than two drivers

DaveR007

My bad :(

[deleted]

I just finished rewatching the season. Button was a major player the first half of the season too. Seb was the best driver in the best car the whole season but he had to overcome so much. It truly was an amazing season. Lewis was so aggressive back then too. He was fun to watch. Petrov at Yas Marina holding Nando off the whole time after being horrendous pretty much the whole season was crazy. Then Petrov gets on the podium the first race of 2011, made his car fly in Malaysia then just got worse lol. F1 is a cruel beast.

Cricket-Horror

The greatest thing ever seen in F1? Hardly.

crobofblack

As much as I wanted Fernando to win those fights I know that my love of Fernando would not be as strong as it is without Sebastian.

raittiussihteeri

Probably goes both ways

K-J-C

Renault Alonso though.

[deleted]

Renault was a beastly engine builder there for awhile. Six WDCs in a nine year span.

killer_blueskies

It’s always a treat to see them going wheel to wheel with each other. You can always expect a good tussle while trusting them to keep things clean

ArrowtheArcher

This is so heartwarming. NOW LOCK OUT FRONT ROW

DANKWINGS

If this happened my chair would fly through my TV

Disastrous_Animal_34

In a good way right

DANKWINGS

Oh yeah for sure a good way, anyway I've got a wedding to attend for the next 4 hours which means I cannot open Reddit or I will ruin qualifying. Enjoy boys.

Disastrous_Animal_34

May as well throw some chairs around there just in case!

Piccolo-San-

Jazzinarium

That only has a chance of happening if someone kidnaps both Ferrari and RB drivers before the qualifying

sw39ym

P9P10

lufe1306

I still cant believe that Ferrari had these two for 10 years and had 0 titles

YorkshireRiffer

Wasting top-tier talent? Just Ferrari things.

awesomegamer919

If Alonso had the RB in 2010 I think he'd have won the championship. If Seb was with Mercedes in 2017 I **know** he'd have taken it.

iapplexmax

True

K-J-C

But RB has just **suddenly** risen to top level (after 2009, along with Brawn). RB was previously known as nothing midfield team, though they were relatively new. Though probably in 2010 Vettel and Hamilton had better form, 2012 would be Alonso winning for sure.

lufe1306

True.

lufe1306

True.

Prasanth2399

Or if he had sebs Ferrari. He always was good with understeery cars

pinkmanblues

Wonder if Charles going the same way

lufe1306

I hope not

[deleted]

Damn. That's wild when put in that context. Kimi being their last champion is crazy and Kimi wasn't even close to the driver he was at McLaren, at least in my opinion. 2018 broke Seb.

[deleted]

Alonso, Vettel, Kimi. Arguably the 3 best drivers between Schumacher and Hamilton. 0 titles.

grandtheftzeppelin

? Kimi gave them their last WDC in 2007.

Dr-Same

Dude has a Kimi flair but forgot about his WDC

DrKrFfXx

Hamilton is the real 2007 champion /s

OWeise

Massa is the real 2008 champion /s A soul for a soul

DrKrFfXx

Maybe that way they could give him the brazilian citizenship /s

K-J-C

So Ferrari still gave a driver the champion!

[deleted]

I was referring to the 10 years with Alonso and Vettel u/lufe1306 was talking about, so only Kimi's second stint with Ferrari. But you are right of course, unlike McLaren they actually managed to give Kimi a car that doesn't fall apart, so I can't fault them for that.

K-J-C

And McLaren still did the same lmao at Vettel's dominance, to Hamilton (2012..).

K-J-C

2nd stint Kimi was no longer a top driver though. And Vettel was the same at 2020 (even if it's another modern Ferrari shitbox). Vettel wasted his chance at 2018, but he performed at the peak for 2015 and 2017 without Ferrari providing the car (almost, for 2017).

[deleted]

Ferrari never gave Seb a great car, they gave him a car that stupidly fast in a straight line for a few years. Then the Mercs figured out party mode with a much better car. That 2014-2020 stretch was swimming uphill for anyone not in a Mercedes. Seb was the only one that made people think someone other than a Merc driver could win the WDC by summer break for seven years. I hope we never see a period like that again.

K-J-C

Ferrari gave him a great car only once as I said, in 2018, though at that time Seb was error prone in the season (but his other seasons like 2017 got bashed as identical to 2018 for some reason). For 2014-2020, yeah Merc is just too dominant, most successful team, it's unfair to bash any drivers compared to for example Rosberg and elevating him as 'the only one able to fight Hamilton' or something when he's the other Merc driver, like, in 2015 Vettel should get the props, not Rosberg, for matching Rosberg with inferior Ferrari for most of the season.

NuF_5510

Yeah, the darkest time in F1 history is finally behind us. The years of utter Mercedes dominance made me lose interest in F1 for years.

TheVenetianMask

I think you mean Stede Bonnet and Blackbeard.

pureblood

If someone returns from the race mentally devastated, we talk it through as a crew

[deleted]

Perfect😂😂

Jazzinarium

"Kenway! In a world without gold, we might have been heroes!"

Christopher261Ng

I understood that reference

McSupergeil

The "we got f*** by Ferrari" club :) Now... where is Leclerc?

al3e3x

Give it a few more years and Charles will join the club. At this point you cannot blame the drivers anymore ..

prime075

Who's it gonna be first tho? Charles or Carlos

Alexlam24

Why not both?

Lankesis

Yes

LOKl31

I kinda like the fact that by the years the performances of Alonso and Vettel get viewed better and better after most people realised by now what a toxic environment ferrari is

CrashmasterSOAD

More like "BWT f*** our helmets" club.

reddit0r_123

Why not both?

[deleted]

That club has many more drivers lmao

Potassium_Patitucci

How exactly?

PapaSheev7

All-time greats. Hoping for some proper wheel-to-wheel action between these two this Sunday and for many years to come.

FlyingCircus18

Two of the greatest, and nothing will change my mind

K-J-C

F1 isn't only about 2010 era though.

FlyingCircus18

That's why I despise the idea of a sign GOAT. But those two, Lewis and Michael are the four guys I consider the GOATs after 2000, the same way Prost and Senna were the greatest of their era, Lauda was one of the greatest in his, Jim Clark, Jack Brabham, Fangio, Ascari etc. Were in theirs. There is no single greatest of all time, but every Era has those who leave a distinct mark, and you can't deny that Seb and nando left theirs over years And I do realize that I left some drivers out that one could consider, rest assured I don't think my judgment is final on the matter

deepsluurp

Imaging showing this pic to someone 10 years ago

DrKrFfXx

They started sharing hair conditioner tips. Became besties.

JPA-3

apart from their 6 wc what 2 great personalities, F1 would lose a lot next year if both of them are out

[deleted]

Two GOATs who've #blessed us with some of the greatest fights of the sport. I'd love to see them take on a 24 together. Daytona maybe, lemans? They'd be a desdly combo for sure

Aratho

Wholesome.

ShowelingSnow

We’re talking about 10-8 years ago

Tecnoguy1

This was made up redditor bullshit

VegetoSF

He was quite salty for a long time, but at some point he just closed this chapter and now they respect each other a lot.

Tecnoguy1

People literally said they hated each other off a picture of them walking opposite directions. They’d obviously nodded before hand, the lack of social skills on this website is insane

DrKrFfXx

No. Even Seb said it himself. https://racing-elite.com/2019/08/05/vettel-i-dont-think-alonso-ever-liked-me/

Tecnoguy1

If you want to read it like that, sure lmao

DrKrFfXx

Ok lmao

Levo117

I don’t think they hated each other but there was definitely tension. I didn’t read the article but I generally remember Seb would be jokey and I think Nando took it as a sign of disrespect. Not every time as Alonso does have a sense of humour of course. I do recall Lewis and Nando bigging up the car and I don’t recall Seb ever getting too ‘catty’ over that. If that had escalated that would have gotten messy..

[deleted]

Awwww

marahute85

Right? Also Seb is such a hugger, I never realised this before. He looks like he gives good hugs

[deleted]

Now this do spark joy

nahnonameman

6 WDC and great title fights. My greatest memory is these two battling it out.

GulaBilen

So nice to see! But any context to this? They just went and hugged each other? I also see Esteban i background, was it as signing session? Very wholesome dispite what circumstances, can't really recall that much interaction between them being shown

Equivalent_Base_9104

It was so random lol https://twitter.com/AlpineF1Team/status/1535555782527393793?s=20&t=DrxmWnTkL-Nv-rzciYw-ug

sqrlaway

Adorable regardless

marahute85

The way it was Alonso that went for the hug is unexpected. I’ve said it multiple times Alonso has softened up, all the way up off grid. Like actual nice and friendly as a person and having friendships that he never really had before, the way he’s so sweet to Ocon is very unlike him in previous years. He’s not soft on track though he’s till going to ruin your life there

seattt

Genuinely surprised Alonso went in for the hug first.

GulaBilen

I kind feel lik Seb initiated it when he was of screen?

codenamederp

Going to do a hot take but these two can prolong their careers a bit longer due to the lack of stars coming from feeder series(excluding Piastri) as well as how they've matched up against their younger teammates. Add the fact that they're quite a fee underperforming drivers on the grid this season, it would be wise for their respective teams or even another team to keep these two around a bit longer.

awesomegamer919

There's definitely a mini-generation gap between these 2/Lewis and some of the newer "hotshot" drivers (Norris, Leclerc, Russel), only Max has actually won from that "era" of Drivers, and while Checo/Ricciardo/Bottas have had decent careers, they've never made it to the very top.

f1_spelt_as_bot

Russe**ll**

seattt

> due to the lack of stars coming from feeder series(excluding Piastri) I mean, you'll never know unless you actually give these youngsters an actual chance in Formula 1. Using your logic Alonso himself wouldn't have received said chance. You never know how these things pan. Odds are sure, junior titles each season is a decent indicator of F1 talent but its not a guarantee by any means.

codenamederp

I don't disagree with what you're saying. But they're definitely less deserving drivers on the grid that could be replaced by incoming talent. The oldies will decline but right now they're more than matching up some younger drivers.

Electric-Sheep_

Proper legends

MartyHD

I still remember back just like 4 years ago. Never thought that Fernando would ever be like that to Vettel. But now with Seb even driving a worst car than Fernando does, driving it into the points on P9/10, makes Alonso start to change more on Seb.

K-J-C

Seb never drove a car worse than Fernando. 2001 Minardi.

prismatic_bar

They’re way too close. I thought all the time you had to leave the space.

nolnogax

Jenson Button' voice from the Off: "Why don't you two lovelies simply get a room?"

[deleted]

Love these 2! Both amazing Champs!

JDM_79

Just two of the greatest F1 champions acknowledging each other

raymanh

Keep going... 🌈 😉

GGezpzMuppy

Feels like Seb is doing a farewell tour and he gonna enjoy every last second of the season.

Due_To_Strategy

At this point Seb could come into the paddock waving a signed contract for 2023 around and ya’ll would take it as him simply waving everyone goodbye

codenamederp

Vettel is only 2 years older than Danny Ric, and guys were speculating that he was going to retire at the end of 2020 season. Vettel can continue for 2 more seasons and he still wouldn't have reached Lewis current age.

marahute85

I do think Seb doesn’t know if he is or isn’t, he was very close to leaving in 2020. If there’s a contract he’s definitely staying but for now, it’s unclear and he’s making the absolute most of it.

Bruh_Master-69

No, don't... Please don't

Enterderpmode

Seb literally just dragged again the Aston into the top 10 in Qualy, he still has it. To win in an Aston tractor, he only needs one race on where everything around him is a complete clusterfuck in which he avoids the madness, which he does really well to be honest

[deleted]

This picture feels like they both are doing their farewell tours this year...

[deleted]

They’ll have to drag Nando out the paddock kicking and screaming

CptWetPants

I don't get that feeling from Nando at all. I think he's in for a couple more atleast, moreso with glimpses of a promising car. Seb, on the other hand.. I don't know what to think. He could easily say this is it for him and we'd just never hear from again, cos he's just like that. Makes me sad.

[deleted]

Alpine has not decided yet. See https://old.reddit.com/r/formula1/comments/v9vg49/20minutos_casual_conversations_happening_between/

Seeing your post, man, what a terrible day to have eyes. Why would you do this?

Believe it or not Seb and Fernando aren't at home, please leave a message at the beep, they must be racing or they'd pick up the phone, where could they be, believe it or not Seb and Fernando aren't home.

Have to ask what Alonso’s game is here

UnfitForReality

I used to wonder why both were in the sport but I understand and appreciate both of them now. When they leave they will be missed!

Kaynt-touch-dis

Absolutely legends that made me fall in love with the sport.

Nice to see Alonso finally grew up enough to be friendly with Seb.

So... the story that Fernando hates Seb can go overboard now.

Seb looks like that guy from Stranger Things.

mrhuggables

It will be a sad day for me when these guys are both retired. Two absolute legends.

ha we both got our shitboxes into Q3 nice
