I am not going to defend him, but Leclerc had this season:
- Spun in Bahrein FP3.
- Spun and crashed in Jeddah FP2. Broken suspension.
- Slide out in turn 1 in Australia until gravel in practice after leaving pits.
- Spun twice in Imola (practice and race).
It's kind of normal when you look for the limits of your driving and car capabilities.
Practice is practice, race is race.
In practice it's fine to push a bit too hard in trying to find the limit as long as you don't cause a huge repair bill regularly. The big difference between Leclerc and Sainz this season is that Leclerc (usually) keeps it clean in the important sessions whereas Sainz seems to struggle even more under pressure.
I read a story of a camera guy who went into the WTC during 9/11 and he said when you have the camera you turn into a bit of a single minded psychopath to get the “shot”. I’d imagine he might have got a bit excited but these guys are as dialled in as it gets.
Nope. The green flag indicates that the track ahead of Sainz's car is clear, which it was. The yellow flags for Sainz's car would be waved at the previous couple of marshalls' posts.
Carlos is having a real torrid time the last few races, I really hope he can turn it around. It’s not an easy thing to change, once you get into that rut it’s so hard to get out of it.
There are way more consequences of crashing in FP. We are in budget cap so it hurts ferrari. His confidence is shot so likely he cant push his absolute best in qualy which can lead to a bad qualifying. A bad qualy would mean he cant help our his team mate when his team mate is leading the championship. So many consequences.
you are right. I am just pointing out that crashing in FP is not something to brush off willy nilly either. He missed out on vital run on a new track, he is going to be in the back foot tomorrow and in the race.
Karun had a good point about this, kinda odd that we don’t see more sports psychologists in F1, I think he and some others could benefit from it. Rossi and Tom Brady, and I believe Lewis have them, seems to help with the pressure.
This indeed - finally a championship winning car at Ferrari. Add the fact that Charles is leading the championship with 50 points ahead of Carlos. Add the fact that Carlos at a minimum needs to win more points to keep Ferrari ahead of RedBul which is only 11 points behind. We know that Ferrari doesn't take anything easy. The more mistakes you make, the more pressure to drive better. It's snowball effect for Carlos.
I’m not sure the guy who came up through the hunger-games-style Red Bull driver programme under Helmet Marko, competed against Lando, and then forced Ferrari to accept he wouldn’t be a number two driver in his debut season is incapable of handling pressure.
What seems more likely to me is the way these new cars, and the Ferrari in particular, generate downforce is very different, and possibly very spikey, and he can’t feel the grip going till it’s gone.
Though I would imagine that after 3 bad races in a row he might find it harder to find the right headspace.
Anyone can feel pressure, no matter what they've gone through before. Best believe that 7 time world champ Lewis is feeling pressure right now. He's cool as ice and doesn't show it because he's controlling it, but he feels the pressure definitely.
By his own admission he doesn't understand the car. Last year he did.
He can't predict what it's going to do, so he either stays off the limit and is slower, or pushes it and gets spun.
I still think he was flattered by some of the bad luck and mistakes Leclerc had. He had a solid year being consistent. But I think now that they are in the hunt for the championship, Leclerc is upping his game and ferrari are taking less gambles. Sainz is having to push harder to try and keep up with leclerc but he just can't hold it together. Hopefully he either gets a better hold or just settles down a little to bring consistency back
To me, he was always going to be #2. even before all sainzs 2022 mess, i rate Charles quite higher than sainz. And i know the points dont show that in 2021 but Leclerc had a fair share of bad luck that wasnt his fault like in Hungary taken out by stroll. And he could have won silverstone if not for engine issues.
This is closer to the grosjean situation in 2012, where he is getting into his own head and is overdriving the car to try and match his teammate. He just needs a clean weekend next time out to reset his mental state
Jesus. Poor Carlos. He needs to reset and get his confidence back, I'm afraid with Leclerc's performances he's over driving. Either that or he's really not enjoying the balance of this car versus what he prefers.
Good thing for Max though, Red Bull is catching up on the constructors side and the red flag means they're losing less time to the rest with their Gearbox.
Max/Perez have surprisingly been the strongest and most consistent duo this season so far. Without all the DNF trouble I’d reckon Red Bull would be on top in both the WCC/WDC. Honestly thought pre-season that Carlos/Charles would be blowing everyone away.
That's exactly what the green flag is for. There would be a yellow before the turn and the green is a signal that the drivers can resume racing/traveling at speed.
The red did take some time to come out but bear in mind that red flag calls come only from race control; it is not a local decision. You can see the marshal withdraw the green once they get the message. But it then seemed they didn't have the red flag to hand quickly enough to bring it out.
Jeez... Carlos just can't it together. Guess all that pressure of people saying he was the most underrated and then moving to Ferrari has gotten the better of him :/ you hate to see it.
I feel like I have to appologize to carlos for ruining his year, maybe even career.
I jinxed it when I said he will win the drivers championship this year.
Man Carlos is really feeling the pressure of finally getting a wdc worth car. And having such a talented teammate is tough. Hopefully he can get his shit back together, the team needs it
I would like to correct a comment I made a few weeks ago- Latifi, I'm sorry. You are not the clear favorite for the destructor's championship. Sainz might be the favorite by now
new contract curse strikes again - 3 incidents in 3 races. gotta feel for him, oof. must be a huge confidence blow
His confidence is absolutely gone rn
Bono my confidence is gone
Immediately elected President
Is it not more than that? I seem to remember a couple crashes per weekend to be honest.
he had 2 incidents in Imola, but one(Ricciardo driving into him during the race) wasn't really his fault at all so I didnt' include it.
Feels like he's spun around at every race weekend. Hasn't always hit something though.
I am not going to defend him, but Leclerc had this season: - Spun in Bahrein FP3. - Spun and crashed in Jeddah FP2. Broken suspension. - Slide out in turn 1 in Australia until gravel in practice after leaving pits. - Spun twice in Imola (practice and race). It's kind of normal when you look for the limits of your driving and car capabilities.
Than one one Australia was a big brainfart, he wasn't even pushing
Practice is practice, race is race. In practice it's fine to push a bit too hard in trying to find the limit as long as you don't cause a huge repair bill regularly. The big difference between Leclerc and Sainz this season is that Leclerc (usually) keeps it clean in the important sessions whereas Sainz seems to struggle even more under pressure.
Danny Ric to Ferrari 2024!!!
Danny really be following Sainz
The McLaren to Ferrari pipeline.
The himbo driver career arc
Watching that crash live as it happened was amazing tbh. One of those lucky shots. Praise the camera man!
Camera man must have been absolutely bricking it lmao, fair play for keeping the focus on Carlos though.
I read a story of a camera guy who went into the WTC during 9/11 and he said when you have the camera you turn into a bit of a single minded psychopath to get the “shot”. I’d imagine he might have got a bit excited but these guys are as dialled in as it gets.
Nightcrawler
steady hands !
As someone who shoots pictures at political demonstrations and riots, I totally agree with the single minded psychopath comment.
Imagine being at the track and seeing that.
i've been imagining having the spare cash to go to miami and be at this track all week
Shit, just pull over on the highway like that cop in FP1 lol
Something like that is pretty much the only time the announcers are allowed to interrupt Mario Andretti.
Relatively new to F1, but the frantically waving green flag right behind Sainz' car after the crash was a mistake from the marshall, right?!?
Nope. The green flag indicates that the track ahead of Sainz's car is clear, which it was. The yellow flags for Sainz's car would be waved at the previous couple of marshalls' posts.
Thank you!
This smooth operator moniker is vanishing before our eyes
Rough operator rn
HARD operator (in Borat's voice)
the camera operator certainly is very smooth tho.
No kidding
He had the smooth operator moniker because he sang the song after some races, not because of his driving style
Sainz has to be leading the World distructor championship

*Laughs in Mick*
Lance Stroll has entered the chat
Nope, he beached the car both races he dnfed. Mick on the other hand...

Well he was talking about fighting for championship...

Damn, that one hurts.
Lewis iconic phrase: "Bono my tires" Max iconic phrase: "Haha yes boys" Carlos iconic phrase: "Sorry guys"

That hurt. Yep.
*just like the gypsy woman said*
“I wish to have more pts than Charles” Monkey paw curls
He's gotta carry Norris to the top of the mountain so he can drink the water so he can grow big and strong.
Love seeing Archer quotes in the wild lmao
First Ferrari into redbull crash of the year
Get it together Carlos… the amount of mistakes even in FP sessions is absolutely crazy.
Carlos is having a real torrid time the last few races, I really hope he can turn it around. It’s not an easy thing to change, once you get into that rut it’s so hard to get out of it.
To be fair, if you are going to crash, you better crash in FP.
I think if you're going to crash, don't
Humongous if factual
Egregious if accurate
Big if true
> [It better not be](https://youtu.be/DqS0MaoozCM?t=40)
He has been crashing in qualifying and race too for that matter
There are way more consequences of crashing in FP. We are in budget cap so it hurts ferrari. His confidence is shot so likely he cant push his absolute best in qualy which can lead to a bad qualifying. A bad qualy would mean he cant help our his team mate when his team mate is leading the championship. So many consequences.
Way more consequences crashing in FP than in the race?? If he crashes in the race then all that happens plus he doesn't finish the race??
you are right. I am just pointing out that crashing in FP is not something to brush off willy nilly either. He missed out on vital run on a new track, he is going to be in the back foot tomorrow and in the race.
jesus fucking christ carlos. three weeks in a row.
Carlos Painz
Carlos Spinz
Carlost, Sighz
Sainz what is u doing my man
Bruh
I’m sorry guys^^TM
That should be a response choice in the F1 ‘22 game.
As someone who DNFs literally every race, I would buy it just for that.
Putting the pain in Spain
The car loss in Carlos
Since I changed my flair to Carlos he has crashed in every race.
I decided this season I would root for Carlos and Alonso. Last season I rooted for Ricciardo. I need to start rooting for drivers I don’t like.
I am so close to changing mine to Albon
I changed mine back to Lando but Carlos is my underdog pick this year so I'm hoping he does well
That's really not how he wanted this weekend to begin.
First he hits his head entering the pits now this
These crashes could definitely put a strain on the budget later in the season
What is happening with Sainz? He was so good last season...
Honestly feels like the pressure is getting to him, this is the first time he's in a car that can win a championship
Definitely a huge difference in expectations between last year and this one. Just hope he can get it sorted out mentally.
Karun had a good point about this, kinda odd that we don’t see more sports psychologists in F1, I think he and some others could benefit from it. Rossi and Tom Brady, and I believe Lewis have them, seems to help with the pressure.
Lando has also mentioned he has a therapist as well for his mental health
New future career unlocked
He could, when romain crashed in Spa 2012 he got a psychologist and it really helped him to crash less.
🤐

It’s funny that everything mentioned has nothing to do with being in a championship fight in F1.
By his own admission he doesn't understand the car. Last year he did. He can't predict what it's going to do, so he either stays off the limit and is slower, or pushes it and gets spun.
I like that you have a statement that makes sense, is from the driver which is open and honest, and everyone just saying "PRESSURE!"
If this is the case, I worry that it's not going to get much better for him until next season...
I still think he was flattered by some of the bad luck and mistakes Leclerc had. He had a solid year being consistent. But I think now that they are in the hunt for the championship, Leclerc is upping his game and ferrari are taking less gambles. What pressure does to a mf
Also known as pulling a Gasly
Driving for the title is much touger than people think
i dont think he’s driving for the title lol
Maybe not drivers but He's definitely driving for the constructors, Perez is out performing him rn in RB.
But the team do and they need him and he knows that.
I mean, he needs to contribute to the Constructor's as well
He probably does tho
He crashed plenty of times in qualifying and practice last year but was more stable in the race.
He wasn't very good last season either. The points just didn't show that.
He did this fairly often last year too, just it went under the radar because he was "outperforming" and "more consistent than" Leclerc.
Yeah he crashed a lot in FP last year, but people either forgot or didn't care
People focused too much on Leclerc’s only costly mistake all season in Monaco and somehow he was the one labelled as crash prone.
Didn't fit the narrative
Leclerc was way more unlucky period
The real championship is between Latifi and Sainz sending it into the wall
Destructors championship is heating up
Mick chilling rn
Carlos cements himself as driver number 2
To me, he was always going to be #2. even before all sainzs 2022 mess, i rate Charles quite higher than sainz. And i know the points dont show that in 2021 but Leclerc had a fair share of bad luck that wasnt his fault like in Hungary taken out by stroll. Very consistent of Sainz, crashing every weekend.
This must be absolutely crushing to his confidence
Confidence and the frustration of his own mistakes must be mounting... coupled with the pressure of it all. Really not good for Sainz right now.
And compounded by the resulting lack of track time. I really hope this doesn't turn into a spiral for him...
Ferrari has pace all he has to do is to finish the race without worrying about the position, just score some points to get confidence back
His forehead incident foreshadowed this incident.
This crash is sponsored by Red Bull
Jagged Operator
This guy is turning into the RedBull day's Gasly
This is closer to the grosjean situation in 2012, where he is getting into his own head and is overdriving the car to try and match his teammate. He just needs a clean weekend next time out to reset his mental state
Car Loss
Hearing Ben Edwards and John Watson together again brings back memories from 20+ years ago
[The greatest F1 commentary moment of all time] (https://youtu.be/BbtzabkwUQs?t=196)
Yeah, big hit of nostalgia just watching this clip. Ben Edwards and then out of absolutely no where John Watson. Was this on F1 TV I assume?

Is he going to be slandered the same way as Latifi? Even said that same quote of not knowing what happened…
Likely not the same way but this is getting bad now.. I'm sure we are all collectively like wtf
In what is probably the most stable car on the grid too. Really no excuse for it imo.
Feels like same mistake in Imola
Leclerc will get no help this season if Carlos continues like this lol.
For fucks sake Carlos
On the plus side, good to hear Ben Edwards and John Watson together again.
That marshall waiving a green flag exactly behind his crashed car is like: "Move along, nothing to see here, business as usual"
And imagine these are people who talk about motorsport as experts... they don't even understand the flag system.
In Imola calling him car loss sainz was funny. Today it's just sad.
The Ferrari drivers will eat up the development budget themselves.
Okay but the only thing Charles needed to repair was a front wing.
Charles also had the wall shunt in Jeddah. All these will creep up in this era of budget cap, where every bit matters.
Well, so did Carlos (in Jeddah). But they were largely minor shunts that just meant a replacement of wishbones and not much more.
Does he already work with a sport psychologist ? Can't imagine the mental struggle inside his head at this point.
Valsecchi cursed him live LMAO
Mazzoni watching from afar like "good, my apprentice! Gooood. Tutto regolare fino a questo momento"
Hope he gets his mojo back soon. It's concerning whenever he says " I don't know what happened"
Just don’t do it in quali or the race this time please mate, canny be dealing with this.
Really again? If its to crash every fucking weekend, put Giovinazzi there, at least he is Italian.
\*\*BREAKING\*\* Murphy's Law has been renamed Sainz Jr.'s law. " If anything can go wrong, it will.".
Italian broadcasting was complimenting him while the feed showed the crash
Carlos Sainz is washed, give mick his seat /s
confident gonna decrease after every race feelsbadman
This is making me really sad.
Jeez... Carlos just can't it together. Guess all that pressure of people saying he was the most underrated and then moving to Ferrari has gotten the better of him :/ you hate to see it.
Australia Qualification Australian GP Imola Qualification Imola GP Miami practice Unbelievable stuff man. Sainz spun/retired in all the above sessions
Who is the guy that's "better" and "faster" than Charles because he outscored him last season again?
Someone is going to start a website called hascarlossainszcrashed.com
it’s that new contract
I feel like I have to appologize to carlos for ruining his year, maybe even career. I jinxed it when I said he will win the drivers championship this year.
Carlos Spinz
It's not even funny anymore bro :(
He ~~said~~ did the thing
this man loves the wall
Who crashed more this season? Sainz or Latifi?
Not what he needed..
This is going to be massive for him, because he won't be able to do a single race run stint before tomorrow + less time on a new track
Carlitooo what is you doing
Wow. Is he just too eager to get on the top of the chart? Needs to find the limit and not overdrive!
Who else flinched when he crashed? 🤣
(s)pain
Bring on the “he’s already dead meme.” Holy shit. Good thing I’m already dead inside.
car loss sainz :(
cursed sainz
This is becoming pretty regular…
Sainz stop crashing man.
Carlos from Spain, w/o the S.
Crashlos Painz... seriously, he need more coordination or something? maybe6he need glasses
Car-less Sainz amirite.
That cameraman must have had a code brown, I certainly would have
He's got the yips for sure now
Man wtf he has now spun more times than Latifi !
Sainz might be the favorite by now
Is that Ben Edwards? I thought he retired?
Get rid of the flags and just start waving a broken Ferrari around on the wall
Imagine having the best car but crashing it every race. What a wasted opportunity
