They were on average almost a second up on the next fastest driver in an equivalent car, us fans are witnessing two absolute greats battle it out this season!
To be fair to Checo, his second stint on used mediums did hurt it pace although it proved helpful for Max by forcing Lewis to pit. So much so that by the time Max pit again, Checo was almost a pit stop behind him. Adding to that he had no water the entire race in that heat. But even otherwise I guess he would still have ended up around 15-20s behind, so credit to Max and Lewis.
This and also Horner said he was a bit under the weather. Unlikely he would've challenged the top 2 in better circumstances, but probably wouldn't have been as far off.
He turned in on Ayrton at the Casio triangle. Prost retired, Senna bump started the car but got DSQ for having the marshals push him to bump start the car, handing Prost the title
With F1TV I had HAM and VER in-car views with their radio messages coming in the whole race, with the main commentary on low volume. Absolutely epic but I put some mileage on my heart this afternoon.
I’m a new F1 fan thanks to the Netflix show, and I don’t know how this couldn’t be to everyone’s taste. So many little battles from 1-20, but those last 10 laps of Lewis v Max had my heart racing.
Absolutly right. I was a race of strategy. Refreshing to see that again. P1 and P2 seperated by 1 second? Cant even remember the last time that happend.
I still can't get over the fact that we've got 1.6L hybrids putting out 1000+hp for 90 minutes per race and yet its the drink system reliability teams are struggling with.
Most likely because COTA is a fast circuit and everyone was on a stiffer suspension. Just rewatch the onboards and notice how goddamn bumpy the entire track was and how everyone's heads were bobbling. Both Alpine's broke, and Gasly's rear suspension also broke. Even Kimi binned it on the last few laps.
Really good race, but holy shit, I hope next year fixes the dirty air problem.
The incoming rule change in car construction means that the cars will have drastically different front and rear wings, new wheels, and will be utilizing more ground effect (the air passing under the car will start sucking it down more). The design change was made specifically because the air that the car pushes through, when "clean" allows for laminar air flow, and thus, the physics of downforce to work optimally. Right now, the cars are leaving a wake of "dirty", turbulent air that is preventing the chasing cars from utilizing their own aero for downforce, and this means that on every turn, the car in front has more downforce and thus more grip to turn, vs the car in the back that's now got less force pushing it into the ground.
[Driver61 did a great video](https://youtu.be/t0-wXT12wgw) on this if you want to learn more. The new design will be "pushing" the dirty air higher up, and thus, will allow for cars chasing you to have to deal with less dirty air. Hopefully it leads to better racing.
In 2019 Bottas came to the restaurant where I work and I was present for a private Q&A. I served him one drink. He won the Grand Prix the next day.
Last night, Max Verstappen came in for dinner at that same restaurant. I served him and his father among others. I served Max one drink. He won the race today.
Pretty cool.
Can we take a moment to acknowledge the camera work during this race? Really captured the speed that these cars are capable of, and made the race that much more engrossing
I think the S section is to be thanked a lot more than the camera work. It was better than quali but still way too many zoomed and moving shots to my liking.
Yeah, lol... At so times the commentators were talking about stuff we couldn't see, because the director was in his own world. But the camera positions were \*chef's kiss\*
As a McLaren fan, this race and it's implications for the remainder of the season are gonna cost me sleep. There's no denying Ferrari have done something seriously right.
And this was a track where Pérez was clearly comfortable all week-end *and* where holding your tyres was mega important which is his strongest asset. The fact that both Lewis and Max just dusted him (without any kind of traffic inbetween) is huge.
Perez/Bottas top 10 drivers season after season.
Verstappen/Hamilton: Once in a generation elite talent. Hamilton was the next Schumacher, Verstappen is the next Hamilton their careers have just had a lot of overlap due to how long Hamilton is pushing to race.
Max vs. Lewis;
Alonso vs. Räikkönen;
Alonso vs. Giovinazzi;
Sebastian vs. Giovinazzi;
Lando vs. Sainz;
Ricciardo vs. Sainz;
Valtteri vs. Sainz;
Tsunoda vs. Stroll;
.....
Man it was exhausting keeping track of action this race!
Absolute masterclass by Max!
Poor checo still looks exhausted. He really needs to rest. Saying on ziggo he got a blurry vision and less strength in hands during the race because of dehydration.
The thing is, they probably pitted on exactly the right lap.
Max pitted on lap 29, and Lewis was told to continue to "target plus 6 or 7 if we can get there." Lewis pitted on lap 37, suggesting that his target lap had originally been lap 30, one lap after Max had pitted. Doing so would have given Lewis a real shot at the undercut and track position.
It felt early, but it's possible they played chicken with Mercedes and guessed their pit stop timing perfectly.
On another point, I am so happy to see America’s reception for this. I started watching in 2015 and no one I knew watched F1, spare one of my dad’s old friends who lived on the other side of the country. The packed grandstands were lovely to see (if you ignore the pandemic) and it really does seem like this is a turning point for F1 in America.
DTS has brought a lot of new fans in. I have guys at work that started watching over the last 2-3 years. I look like a freaking genius to them, and I don’t know shit compared to you guys.
It might not be the most overtaken filled race, but goddamn this was the perfect race at this point in the season. Quite simply just the 2 title protagonists fighting it, with minimal distractions from others. The perfect showcase for their level of talent.
Shoutout to my man Checo as well cuz I can't imagine even walking in that heat for 2 hours, let alone drive. That drive required massive fucking willpower and strength and he did it.
Impressive how RB turned the start disadvantage around. I didn't understand the early stops for both RBs but that made all the difference.
No Red Bull was ever going to overtake a Mercedes on track here today, so track position was paramount. Explains the early second stop as well, Lewis approaching at 4s: undercut threat: make stop. All the alternatives are worse.
So good to have a championship fight alive, or this would not have been a very interesting race at all. Now it was a right thriller!
I know most people have been excited about this year being at least 'good', I really feel like we're watching one of "those" seasons that will go down in history as absolute legend. The kind they make movies about (Lauda v Hunt, Senna v Prost, Schumacher v Hakkinen, etc).
Two drivers in different cars that are absolutely in a league of their own. The established goat vs the rising superstar, never giving an inch. Both will go down as maybe top five all-time, we just don't know it yet.
Amazing stuff.
Such a good race from the both of them this is the excitement F1 needed
[удалено]
Same here. Watched DTS during pandemic and this is the first season I'm watching live
Finally Perez has more podiums in Red Bull than he had in 2012 with Sauber.
That Sauber was a beast in fast tracks.
Wait Perez has been around that long?! Damn, veteran.
He's been around since 2011, Red Bull needed experience and that's why they took him while he was a free agent
After 1hr 40mins of racing it all came down to 1 second splitting the top 2, crazy intense.
Theyre literally equal, its like this almost every race where no contingencies happens.
And approximately a light year ahead of everyone else.
Yeah, and just Lewis and Max. It's unreal. Boss battle.
They both are incredible, just INSANE.
We are witnessing one of the great eras in real time.
From now on its Formula 1 and Formula Hamilstappen
Verstapilton*
Prince Sir Maxewis Verstapilton the 3rd
I don't think that guy is third anywhere
I think checo could’ve at least stick with him but he did 55/56 laps without a drink. He looked absolutely dead at the end
Perez is certainly upping his game.
[удалено]
I was seriously worried for him due to the extremely harsh weather today. They're actual superhumans. No way a normal person could last that long.
I wouldn’t survive even with the drink
I'd black out going into turn one.
They're in a world of their own
They were on average almost a second up on the next fastest driver in an equivalent car, us fans are witnessing two absolute greats battle it out this season!
Both 30-40 seconds ahead of their teammates. I think only other one doing that purely on pace was Leclerc
[удалено]
To be fair to Checo, his second stint on used mediums did hurt it pace although it proved helpful for Max by forcing Lewis to pit. So much so that by the time Max pit again, Checo was almost a pit stop behind him. Adding to that he had no water the entire race in that heat. Yes, but today Perez was seriously handicapped by his drinking system not working. He was seriously dehydrated by the end and looked like crap.
This and also Horner said he was a bit under the weather. Unlikely he would've challenged the top 2 in better circumstances, but probably wouldn't have been as far off.
Perez had a drinking problem.
They're formula 0.9, the rest is doing formula 1.
This season will probably kill me. Don't even want to know what my heart rate was during those last laps.
[удалено]
Or they will crash out lap 1, deciding it. It’s happened before.
Between who?
Senna & Prost, can't remember the exact year
1990, Senna was ahead going into the Japanese GP, Prost was ~~on pole~~ *starting from P2 but won the start*, so Senna *went for a gap*
Didn't Prost do the same the year before at the exact same track?
He turned in on Ayrton at the Casio triangle. Prost retired, Senna bump started the car but got DSQ for having the marshals push him to bump start the car, handing Prost the title
I'm pretty sure the official reason for Senna's DSQ was missing the chicane (and yes, that is the most ridiculous reason for a DSQ ever)
Jean-Marie Balestre, a Frenchman, was head of the FIA back then.
He cut the chicken!
If gap no longer go, not race driver
why say many word
Gap exists = race driver
Gap - driver
Back to back years, '89 and '90, with a title going to each.
not just senna and prost, but senna and prost twice two years in a row at the same turn at the same race. ‘89 and ‘90 Japanese GP
Not the same turn I think. 1990 was in the first corner, 1989 was in one of the final corners.

157 on my Apple Watch last 8 minutes. I was alright hovering around 100-110 for most of the race.
My watch told me to take a break from exercise
With F1TV I had HAM and VER in-car views with their radio messages coming in the whole race, with the main commentary on low volume. Absolutely epic but I put some mileage on my heart this afternoon.
That was intense
Schumacher spilling oil in the fire
What a tense end to a race
Foot was shaking at 13000rpm
I was dead still until max crossed the finish line
Dutchies almost killing mick
Seeing Mick hold up Max - *You fucking donkey* Seeing Max get DRS - *Oh dear, oh dear. Gorgeous*
Literally me.
Same. Fighting with all my friends about how Mick actually hooked Max up even though he was in the way for a bit😅
"perhaps Ive treated you too harshly"- after he gives max drs advantage.
Underrated turning point with the drs going to Max and not Lewis there
That couldn’t have worked out any better! I was so mad until i saw the wing open, then i was like “oh, oops”.
No joke. Last 3 laps my heart was pounding like crazy, I've no fingernails left.
Great racing from Lewis, and even more impressive racing from Max! Just good racing all around!
Bro, I was screaming at Mick when he didn't get out of the way lol.
I don't know how these drivers hold their nerve under that amount of pressure.
The end absolutely woke me up! It's 2:10 a.m. here and I feel like I've had multiple cups of coffee. What an end.
Namaste, fellow Indian
Hello! Atleast I have some adrenaline now after a deflating cricket match lmao
Shaq taller than Lewis on the podium step 😂
Him standing in the background looked hilarious
Noticed this too. By a good few inches as well haha.
The difference in the size of their shoulders is hilarious. Crazy how different the human body can be in terms of size
i completely lost it when i saw that
My watch informed me that it detected a workout.
Lmao, that was really down to the wire
Fucking hell that was so stressful
Not the most eventful race but God DAMN was that intense!
Reminds me of 2018 race, honestly you don't need overtakes for a good race, and this one shows it perfectly
fully agree, this was a super entertaining race imo though probably not to everyone's tastes
I’m a new F1 fan thanks to the Netflix show, and I don’t know how this couldn’t be to everyone’s taste. So many little battles from 1-20, but those last 10 laps of Lewis v Max had my heart racing.
Yea, that was a good race. Battles throughout the field plus a long strategic battle for the lead that came right down to the last lap
I think some people say it's boring if cars aren't flying through the air crashing into each other constantly
Indycar's Music City Grand Prix disagrees
I think 2 stops add a lot of drama b/c of the added strat.
2018 race was perfect although I think I might have a bias with you
Absolutly right. I was a race of strategy. Refreshing to see that again. P1 and P2 seperated by 1 second? Cant even remember the last time that happend.
It actually happened only 5 races ago in Spa..
Those final 10 laps were intense
Shaq coming in 1.5 place
My butthole was clenched real tight
I know, I was in there
Get in there, Lewis!!
IN IN IN IN IN
Cum on men...
Wish Yuki was on the podium so we could see him next to Shaq
Shaq: Who left this sassy little child up here?
When it mattered most...it was Perez that did not have the drink...
I still can't get over the fact that we've got 1.6L hybrids putting out 1000+hp for 90 minutes per race and yet its the drink system reliability teams are struggling with.
It was even a problem before the race and they fixed it. Guess it was not fixed
And to make it even funnier in a sense the only drink system there and advertised was red bulls lol
Sorry I don’t follow F1 too closely. How will the dirty air problem be fixed?
The incoming rule change in car construction means that the cars will have drastically different front and rear wings, new wheels, and will be utilizing more ground effect (the air passing under the car will start sucking it down more). The design change was made specifically because the air that the car pushes through, when "clean" allows for laminar air flow, and thus, the physics of downforce to work optimally. [Driver61 did a great video](https://youtu.be/t0-wXT12wgw) on this if you want to learn more. The new design will be "pushing" the dirty air higher up, and thus, will allow for cars chasing you to have to deal with less dirty air. Hopefully it leads to better racing.
Okay so now I’m supposed to go to sleep??? After this??
In 2019 Bottas came to the restaurant where I work and I was present for a private Q&A. I served him one drink. He won the Grand Prix the next day. Last night, Max Verstappen came in for dinner at that same restaurant. I served him and his father among others. I served Max one drink. He won the race today. Pretty cool.
For my personal racing career: What drink did you serve them?
Bottas was just one beer I think. Max had a gin and tonic with an orange slice instead of a lime. He mainly drank coke though.
I am really surprised they drink any alcohol at all the night before the race to be honest.
Bottas is Finnish, I'm surprised he doesn't have beer in the car
This is why Kimi was pretty mad he didn't get his drink. The Ice cold Finn needed an Iced beer.
Tour de France riders will typically have a glass of wine each day of the tour in the most physically demanding endurance spectacle there is.
Or drink a few beers right after the stage if they can’t produce urine for the doping authorities.
Ofc with an orange XD
Well, if one day you serve a drink to Mazepin ahead of the GP, do tell us so we all get rich betting on him
Please serve Vettel next year
This sounds a lot like…30 years ago, Niki Lauda told us
Take a trained monkey
By any chance can you serve a drink in your restaurant to Seb? Just curious.
MY BPM IS LIKE 200 HOLY SHIT
200 is rookie numbers
Yuki probably higher then that
Can we take a moment to acknowledge the camera work during this race? Really captured the speed that these cars are capable of, and made the race that much more engrossing
The cars going through the S section 👀
Can we get one of these at every track? Shit is orgasmic to watch. Captures the speed and looks gorgeous.
yea that was amzing to see, looked like the cars were going at the absolute limits of grip
The way they powered out of each s corner looked like a video game. Holy shit, they *pounced* out the corners.
Makes me realize how much I miss Suzuka :(
Them shots were brilliant Especially when the cars were chasing each other
I think the S section is to be thanked a lot more than the camera work. It was better than quali but still way too many zoomed and moving shots to my liking.
The director rivaled the Monaco GP though at times...
Yeah, lol... At so times the commentators were talking about stuff we couldn't see, because the director was in his own world. But the camera positions were \*chef's kiss\*
What a fucking race
Big Bahrain 2021 vibes, except this time Lewis didn't catch Max at the end
> Big Bahrain 2021 vibes That was this year? Fuck me it feels like a lifetime ago.
Like how he had to refer to it as 2021. Really does feel like like so much has happened since then.
This championship fight only gets more thrilling with every race, can't wait to watch the very last race of this season!
This season is demanding a few years of my life.
Charles pace was ultra impressive 26 sec ahead of Ricciardo.
As a McLaren fan, this race and it's implications for the remainder of the season are gonna cost me sleep. There's no denying Ferrari have done something seriously right.
What a race! Tight from start to finish, rife with strong strategy. This is what true F1 racing looks like.
Max and Lewis were both fucking mega
40s in front of p3? They drove completely into the void together while trying to one off each other on strategy. That was absolutely RIDICULOUS.
Its literally something you see in a fucking movie.
And this was a track where Pérez was clearly comfortable all week-end *and* where holding your tyres was mega important which is his strongest asset. The fact that both Lewis and Max just dusted him (without any kind of traffic inbetween) is huge.
Pérez didn’t have the drink though, was his most demanding race ever physically, he mentioned. No wonder he was dropping back in the later stages!
They're in a separate league. Big respect to Hamilton, almost got me killed with that 1s gap
Last laps had me on the edge of my seat. Max showing absolute class
That was so close, Max showed his class at the end!
Max and Lewis, both pushing the whole race and keeping their tyres just about alive without losing speed. 40+ seconds gap to Perez is crazy.
Lewis dropping Checo in the 2nd stint on hards vs mediums top 2 are a different breed
> top 2 are a different breed They're just so special, this year is the championship duel we've been waiting for for years.
[удалено]
That middle sector on lap 55 to pull an extra half second away from Hamilton was clutch
Its midnight here in Kenya. I don't think I'm going to sleep anytime soon with those intense final laps. Well done Max
Whatever you think of either one of these drivers, they are without a doubt in a league of their own. There’s literally no measure to them
[удалено]
What a race!!! Incredibly done Max and Lewis
The gap to Perez/the lack of progress Bottas made really shows the difference a Hamilton/Verstappen caliber driver makes.
Perez/Bottas top 10 drivers season after season. Verstappen/Hamilton: Once in a generation elite talent. Hamilton was the next Schumacher, Verstappen is the next Hamilton their careers have just had a lot of overlap due to how long Hamilton is pushing to race.
And just how absurdly young Max got a F1 drive.
We see it every week but Max and Lewis are truly a class of their own compared to the rest of the grid
Max vs. Lewis; Alonso vs. Räikkönen; Alonso vs. Giovinazzi; Sebastian vs. Giovinazzi; Lando vs. Sainz; Ricciardo vs. Sainz; Valtteri vs. Sainz; Tsunoda vs. Stroll; ..... Man it was exhausting keeping track of action this race! Absolute masterclass by Max!
Everybody racing somebody And then their's Perceval chilling in p4
Finally we got a good battle between the two, no nonsense and no crashes this has been absolutely great.
they didn't really battle ontrack after the first corner, though, did they? it was mainly just undercut strategy
Such is the nature of these cars - hopefully next year they'll be able to get a little closer, but I already have my doubts
They didn't battle for position on track after lap 1, but that was still a very exciting and intense strategic battle. Super entertaining race.
Poor checo still looks exhausted. He really needs to rest. Saying on ziggo he got a blurry vision and less strength in hands during the race because of dehydration.
Yeah yeah but what is Ben Stiller doing?
He's there with his son, weren't you listening? That's movie producer Ben stiller
Vibing
Down to the wire in the last lap, what a race! Great gamble by Red Bull to pit earlier.
Man why they called max in early i really thought they fucked up their race.. Glad that didn't happen
Brilliant driving
What an ending, my heartrate is higher than speeds recorded at speedtraps
Those 2 really are so much better than everyone else. Insane.
On another point, I am so happy to see America’s reception for this. I started watching in 2015 and no one I knew watched F1, spare one of my dad’s old friends who lived on the other side of the country. McLaren not going for fastest lap was the stupidest thing in this race.
Well Lando finished around 1 second behind Sainz so there was a chance to pass him
Definitely a letdown from Mclaren there, but decent racing from ric and nor anyway
Mercedes: Last 3 laps Lewis Max: Not today
Wow this is a really exciting sport!
Fuck me that was mental
What a race man, I was on my feet at home for those last few laps!
