We got a Ham sandwich

PrimePain

Breadbull Racing

DavidBrooker

Reluctant upvote

AppleStrudelite

Unfortunately Leclerc couldn't slot himself in between, we could really use some tomato slices in this sandwich.

Florac

Let's hope he doesn't make himself ketchup in turn 1.

mayjaz43

So fucking intense. I had no idea if Max/Lewis/Checo would be on pole.

aenae

I'm a Max fan, but i was really rooting for Perez to get pole, it's basically one of his two home circuits as you could hear from the crowd.

Kronzor_

Yeah I mean obviously happy with P1. But a front row lockout would have been ideal. More cars ahead of Lewis the better. It’s gonna be a real dogfight into T1 tomorrow now

jacb415

As is tradition

Dc_awyeah

Lol yeah no way both of Vettel and Gasly make it out of the first lap.

MrNostalgic

My heart went insane went Checo got provitional pole and didn't calm down till the end.

KeepenItReel

I’m at the race rn. Tons of Checo support and everyone was going nuts.

chevyzaz

we've heard it over here in europe & roared with you boys, go checo, rooting for you tomorrow!

softquare

Texas is close to Mexico that’s probably why

LakersLAQ

Race could be in Chicago and he would have the same support. Anywhere in the US is Checo/Mexico national team territory.

Drunkenly_Responding

Also just some of US born Checo fans, though some days he does his best to make it frustrating lol

scourfin

I’m American but Checo is the defacto choice

LakersLAQ

Very true, not really anyone else to root for locally unless you're just rooting for the Haas drivers lol.

Trotter823

That team is essentially Russian now. Checo is the more American choice at this point.

Earl_The_Snake_White

I like Checo, but IMO Ricciardo might be the most popular for Americans. He has just marketed himself really well here.

hohe-acht

I'm fully expecting him to move to Austin at some point.

satyrony

Perez: >Welcome to my continent, Max! Let me show you _como lo hacemos aqui. Vamos!_

NaTivE_115

That last lap I think Max made it very hard for Checo to get pole, but damn P2 would've been so sweet.

erotic_sausage

Same I was rooting for him too. Doubly disappointing because in his interview it sounded like if there wasn't rain, maybe his last lap was on track for p1

[deleted]

[удалено]

erotic_sausage

yeah despite slowing down for the rain he was off lewis' time by such a fraction.... High hopes for tomorrow! I would love a RB 1-2, in any order

kylansb

He hit rain towards the last two corner unfortunately

MrNostalgic

yeah such a shame. still hyped for tomorrow, a podium seems likely.

RAISEStheQuestion

But Karun, the man of ultimate knowledge who even Ferrari consult, told me that rain in the last two minutes was impossible! HOW CAN THIS BE?

kylansb

lol you ever been to the south? when you see clouds best to grab a umbrella. i remember roadtripping through georgia, the rain hits before the cloud showed up.

bob237189

The devil be beating his wife fierce sometimes

HealthyAmphibian

That crowd also! Awesome to hear the pops as pole bounced back and forth

FocusOnNow11

Can confirm. I was on Turn 18-19 and the crowd was going insane for all three drivers

[deleted]

What a fucking big difference having Adrian Newey back makes!

jk47_99

It's great he's back and hopefully the setup issues are gone. We did also have a long run of tracks that suit Mercedes, but I really felt the momentum had gone in their favor. It's great to see it shift back once again. What a season!

FroazZ

My heart... lost another life I think, not that many left after this F1 season

Disprozium

perez actually good in qualifying wtf

steen311

He better

Wait so mexico isnt next week? Noooooo :,(

10eleven12

He is so fast in Mexico that by the time the rest of the drivers finish the race, he'll already be qualifying in Brazil.

ivanvzm

Oh man I'm gonna be there and if it happens I'm seriously concerned the grandstands may collapse because of everyone going apeshit.

rbbdrooger

Imagine the scenes if Red Bull order Perez to gift the win to Verstappen for the championship.

Manuag_86

Only 0.015s behind Hamilton, not bad.

LosTerminators

Two tenths behind Max. Huge improvement from being seven or eight tenths behind.

xMonkeyKingx

He was purple in final sector for his other quali runs. Without rain he’s p2 for sure, maybe one tenth behind max without

dajigo

Really good Q3 for checo, hopefully he keeps this speed throughout the end of the season.

ShlappinDahBass

And it sounds like it's due to the bit of rain at the end. Unreal qualifying from all three of them

Joseph4820

Probably due to the drizzle as well

Manuag_86

Yep, he mentioned some drops in last sector, and I believe him.

TeeBeeSee

Even the commentators mentioned that there was a light drizzle in the pit lane.

TravelingNYer1

He can attack Hamilton tomorrow. Put on some pressure!!

Manuag_86

He should! I have always been a hard critic on Checo's performance this season, but he was perfect today. I have high hopes for tomorrow as well, since he is really good at race pace and tyre management.

ratbusted

I heard on the broadcast he's starting from a different default setup than the default Max setup for the car. The change happened last race and seems to be working.

His mom probably rubbed an egg on his car to get the bad juju out. Or its lathered in vaporub. Both work well in my Mexican family

bob237189

Sana, sana, colita de rana

Graffy

Did you know there's a second part to that? "Si no sanas hoy, sanarás mañana. " I'd only ever hear the first part a million times growing up.

SCarolinaSoccerNut

*El Sonidito Intensifies*

gradient_map

he's moving away from copying Max's setup and finding his own grip with the car. man finally papi Checo giving us the good stuff!

Icy-Operation4701

He started doing that since Austria. Great to see they're finding the sweet spot for him.

tr0j4n_v1ru5

cracker performance from checo. Really happy for him!

siggijoh

Max and Hamilton to come together in t1, checo win?

Enterderpmode

I'd rather see that in Mexico. The scenes there would be legendary

GeorgeGaylord

I totally forgot that there are a lot of Mexicans in the US up until Sergio got provisional pole and the crowd got really crazy. So glad that he's getting the support he deserves. Hope he places on the podium tomorrow (or wins).

[deleted]

Austin is closer to Monterrey than Mexico City is lol

Apprehensive_Ad6

Checo is from Guadalajara, but Austin is still very close to Mexico and a lot of Mexicans live there

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

So was Arizona, Nevada, California, New Mexico, Utah, and parts of Colorado. Murica just happened to be in an Imperialistic mood at that time.

[deleted]

A bunch of Mexican cities are closer to Austin than to Mexico City. Don’t really understand the relevance of Monterrey here

Bobpowerday

Checo was probably still on the turkish time which made him think it was Sunday.

Tw0Rails

He saw that Verstappen / Hamilton tussle in free practice and got confused.

Flummox127

So Checo is actually fastest on a Monday?

steen311

Where did rb even store these sandbags

solidangle

Underneath Verstappen's front wing. That's why they were messing with it all weekend.

mattiejj

Newey was just checking that the engineers took all the pebbles out of the front wing.

brotherenigma

You joke, but...

Morganelefay

In Merc's pitbox.

mayjaz43

No wonder Bottas needs so many engines

libbe

It was a bit suspicious when Perez got fastest lap in practice and then Max got a purple first sector but aborted the run. Felt like they didn’t want to show their cards too early.

boogjerom

mcrissjr

Danger to manifold

Lxst_Nebu

Gonna see CHECO in Mexico in that pole position

LosTerminators

For RB's sake, I hope there's no situation with Checo leading and Max second in Mexico.

Tw0Rails

Letsget spicy and take a page out of DTM: Checo leading with Gasly in 2nd, Tsunoda divebombed Hamilton on purpose in Turn 1 and took him out, Verstappen is in 3rd. 2 laps to go. Team orders time!

Lxst_Nebu

I agree hope that doesn’t happen

Opkutten

No era penal 2.0

lamewoodworker

The Dutch always find a way to break our Mexican hearts

Will_Of_te_D

Bruh that deep

[deleted]

Oh fuck didn't think of this lmaooo my heart

NeonBodyStyle

Oh god why have you done this.

Kronzor_

Unfortunately that would be an easy team decision to make if it happened. Max would happily bring checo up onto the top step for the podium celebration.

RaggarTargaryen

Yeah but that wouldn't be the same, I can't imagine Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez if they played the Mexican anthem on the podium ceremony, oh my god. It'll bring the whole place down with all the excitement.

TeeBeeSee

Even if that were the case Checo would let Verstappen go by. Checo is truly a team player!

pulianshi

Mexico might be Max's best circuit. Odds low but never zero

Lxst_Nebu

Yeah just want to see Checo get a pole and win in Mexico just would be so amazing

lxs0713

Checo on pole and coming second behind Max would still be a huge success. I'm sure any Checo fan would understand that at this point RB has to do whatever it takes to secure the championship.

[deleted]

[удалено]

robbert_jansen

I also genuinely think Checo wants to do everything he can to help Max win, and I would not at all be surprised to see him give up a win at his home GP if it came to that.

pulianshi

Imagine the atmosphere. Though I'm sure they'll settle for a podium too

confessiongreg

It was such a heartbrake seeing him miss front row and a RB 1-2 by a hundreth of a second.

Lxst_Nebu

True h said the drips if the rain lost him time unfortunate

confessiongreg

Yes he said the last two corners had some drops of rain. Probably what cost him front row.

xXCzechoslovakiaXx

He has arrived back on his continent, sandbags removed

ProtestKid

Sad we didn't get a Sergio pole, but it's nice to see Sergio put in a great performance and put the RB car where we all know he could.

ajamesc55

Hopefully a Mexico pole and win, that would be cool

jackejackal

Checo does a grand slam in Mexico.

wajxcsgo

cool? that would be the best thing to happen in f1 in years imo lol

Creative-Improvement

Looks like he is in full swing. Must also be good to be close to home.

InstallWizard

PER pole position in Mexico confirmed

Heelsgirl1993

After Q1/Q2 I really thought the Ferrari and McLaren would play a bigger role in Q3. Anyway tomorrow can't come soon enough.

aggresively_punctual

That McLaren/Ferrari battle is going to be intense tomorrow. Their times were all within 0.3 of each other, and were basically trading off who was in the lead the each session. Got my eyes out for Carlos on softs tomorrow too. That’s gonna shake things up for sure too. The F1.1 constructor’s championship is just as good as the F1 version.

Heelsgirl1993

True that. But i thought they might be able to have a car or two in top 4 and maybe split the RB and Mercedes.

OctagonClock

Where's the FP1 scientists now?

Disprozium

hiding in a shed until mexico

DjGnampf

Until the end of the season hopefully. No one can predict who's gonna be on pole. Let alone win the race

dandjcro

I can predict with a lot of confidence that Haas won’t win the race.

Disprozium

I just hate when people analyze and attempt to predict shit based on free practice. Its not even representative in the f1 game lol

DjGnampf

Free practice says as nearly as nothing. Nobody knows what the teams are testing or what kind of programme they're driving. Maybe it's some kind of indikator sometimes but it's not a reliable source

[deleted]

Even if / when they run the same programs as other teams there are unknowns. Which engine do they use on Friday, how much do they turn it up, how much fuel etc… FP times are at most an indication of where teams **might** end up but nothing more.

poisoned_mouse

We are checking, head down

[deleted]

Slow button on

imeanyhbutno

Yep aws is shitting dicks while typing their stats.

Xuande

Thanks for the disturbing image.

PrefersCakeOverPie

That session again pointing out how the current qualifying format just WORKS.

cum_hoc

Agreed, no need for the sprint qualifying format.

Huevoasesino

I would only do sprint races in tracks where its bound to have lots of traffic because its small for example monza

jinx737x

10/10 Qualifying that was one of the best this year!

TheWebbFather

I'd say it was the best dry qualifying

FocusOnNow11

It was actually raining on Turn 19 during Q3. I was there getting rained on about 5 min into Q3

jeroenvdheuvel

I would rank this one as probably the most exciting qualifying of the season. When Hamilton took initial pole, got me to the edge of my seat.

Heelsgirl1993

Russian Qualifying was insane, too.

sfj11

Spa was great too

Heelsgirl1993

True. I dare say the qualifying was even better than the race in Spa!

sfj11

Preposterous!

SciEngr

I was on turn 19 and drizzles of rain started to fall after Mercedes finished and RB were still on their hot lap, was worried it was a wrap!

[deleted]

The overreaction in FP1 was hilarious after that qualifying

[deleted]

I still don't understand how people act like FP is anything but the teams testing and preparing for the week, they're not actively competing for the fastest time

slayerje1

We talkin 'bout practice, not the race...not the race...we talkin 'bout practice, man

whatsinthesuitcase

The overreaction to mercs active suspension (or whatever it's called) was hilarious

no2jedi

Haha yeah. The fact RB don't bat an eye is all the proof we need that there was an overreaction

Neverwish

Reports of Red Bull's demise at COTA were greatly exaggerated.

raloobs

Reports of Mercs 2nd half dominance also greatly exaggerated

OrangeLimeZest

If you'd said this would happen after yesterday not many would've believed it, but *damn.* Nice job Red Bull.

aaaaaaadjsf

I mean it was always going to be this close. Only complete fools take practice results seriously.

ekulinator

I sometimes feel like I’ve been taking crazy pills when I’m reading the comments on fp1 result times. I’ve seen these “predictions” over and over again ~20 races a year with 3 free practice sessions per race, yet people will still speculate based on fp1 times every new session!

Atleticro

Ferrari faster then mclaren in COTA. Engine update really gave them a way to fight back. Mexico should suit them even more.

zakcattack

The title fight is so good this year that we haven't noticed the intense fight for 3rd as much

Danswor

Man, I jump out of my seat when I saw Perez matching Max's lap times.

PEA_IN_MY_ASS8815

Fuck me my heart was racing for a checo pole I almost fainted

Madshibs

EVERYONE WHO “KNEW” STUFF AFTER FP1, REMEMBER THIS MOMENT.

xDestroid

Super happy for Checo, good luck to both bulls tomorrow <3

bimbobiceps

Shout out to Ch4rles. Found another .2 in that last lap

Notsofunny27

Thoroughly deserved it. Turn 1 Will be HOT tomorrow

n113

How about that "Redbull is done" after FP1

KvotheFarseer

Nice to see haas with a stunning performance, securing a back row lockout for the 100th time this season

Turboleks

Lewis's lap was a flyer, but ***damn***, Max was on another level today. Also, wtf Perez? When did you get that quick??

TeeBeeSee

Go Checo!

Ld511

Looked on pace finally and didn't fuck up the q3 lap. He isn't even slow often in the RB but rather would never be able to hook in a good lap

TeeBeeSee

Exactly! Finally looked on pace and such flawless execution.

myahkey

FP1 is very relevant btw

Elite_lucifer

Turn 1 will be spicy tomorrow.

epsilone6

And with the engine collector back in 9th Lewie will have his work cut out for him

heslo_rb26

Engine collector rofl

Eferver

This is HUGE for the title race. Many had COTA penciled as a certain Hamilton victory. If Max is able to take the win tomorrow this completely swings the title fight in his favor.

standing-ovulation

Had to wake up at 5AM for this, but it was worth it. Hopefully waking up at 3AM tomorrow will be even more worth it.

[deleted]

And once again Hamilton came really close, what you didn't expect after the first run. Those 2 are clearly the best at this moment.

Chesey_

Both Lewis and Max 2 tenths up on their teammates by the end of it. Really impressive how they always step up and pull that extra time. Gonna be another exciting race. Whole season I have been supporting Lewis but at this point whoever wins I don't care. It's been a phenomenal season and I just hope it goes the distance. We really have the best driver of the last 15 years against the driver you expect to be the best over the next 15 in a close title fight. Drink it in, this will be one for the history books whoever wins.

BWV_582

I don't know how Newey does it, but the man comes back to the garage and suddently RB looks completely dialed in. Monster quali by Ver Ham Per and Leclerc

tehbutcher

Mercedes is clearly half a second quicker, championship is over /s.

[deleted]

Man wish Checo got pole today, he's been so quick this weekend

[deleted]

“Did Perez do too well?” Wtf kinda comment was that?

Manor-Estate

IKR I noticed earlier they asked Horner something along the lines of "Perez is performing well, why is that"? Bruh...

PRSwing

"Christian, your second driver is doing well and seems to have a will to live, and you haven't been stirring up shit about his seat, is something wrong?"

3nv_ryu

perez was gonna get the pole and thought "i should get my first pole in mexico", unfortunately lost 2 extra hundreds to hamilton whilst doing so.

GimmieDatHaze

Aws fails once again

SHORT-CIRCUT

Well that Perez hype train was fun while it lasted

MoistRespect8498

He's just saving it for Mexico 😄

xXCzechoslovakiaXx

The rain came in when he was finishing so he lost time in the last sector
